Home schooling is not for the faint of heart, as many of us are discovering in the age of Covid-19 (either by direct experience or through <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/israeli-mom-s-coronavirus-homeschooling-video-goes-viral-t176522">harrowing tales shared over social media</a>).<br />
<br />
This might be why the governesses we run across in the Sherlock Holmes stories are all strong women. They have to deal with the children (and let's face it, they're usually children from well-to-do families, which may contribute to their 'sparkling' personalities), all while cooped up in a home environment.<br />
<br />
Take Grace Dunbar, for instance. She looked after the Gibson children in "The Problem of Thor Bridge." When Watson first saw her, he described the how he felt:<br />

"I can never forget the effect which Miss Dunbar produced upon me. It was no wonder that even the masterful millionaire had found in her something more powerful than himself."</blockquote>
We can only imagine how she must have commanded a classroom at home, and how that may have translated to Neil Gibson, the U.S. senator and so-called "gold king." As Holmes says in the closing paragraph, "the financial world may find that Mr. Neil Gibson has learned something in that schoolroom of sorrow where our earthly lessons are taught.”<br />
<br />
These days, the "schoolroom of sorrow" might be any home around the country where parents are taking on the role of teacher. Even Baker Street Elementary is not immune...<br />

The BSI Press continues its Professions Series in 2020, this time with <i>Education Never Ends: Education, Educators, and the Sherlockian Canon</i>. And we sat down with Marino C. Alvarez, Ed.D., BSI ("Hilton Soames") and Timothy S. Greer, BSI ("Ragged Shaw"), editors of the volume.<br />
<br />
They schooled us on all of the ways that education plays a role in the Sherlock Holmes stories, from evil-natured teachers to those who would literally give up their life for a student. We journeyed through the city and country, and from elementary (ha!) through university life.<br />
<br />
We followed up on the <b>Canonical Couplet</b> that we did live in the last episode, and in this episode our prize is an edition of <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> with an introduction by <a href="https://amzn.to/2RDBUN3">Eric Ambler</a> from 1974. In an effort to cheer the spirits of the home-bound and continue reveling in Sherlock Holmes, we decided a show with just Burt and Scott discussing current affairs was, in addition to brandy, just what the good doctor ordered.<br />
<br />
Given that all Sherlockian gatherings this spring have been cancelled or postponed, we used this as a jumping-off point for imagining what kind of virtual gatherings we might be able to instigate. We had a few ideas, but our live audience added to the mix as well.<br />

Influenza and Doyle

It came from the East. Within four months it had dispersed over the entire Northern Hemisphere. It was the 1889–1893 flu pandemic, known as “the Russian influenza” because it was first widely noted in St. Petersburg in late October 1889, although its origins might have been in Central Asia.<br />

It hit in waves. First from October 1889 to December 1890, then March to June 1891, November 1891 to June 1892, and winter 1893-4. It has been called the first global pandemic.<br />
<br />
Thanks to modern rail and naval transportation the flu spread fast, hitting capitals and ports first, then diffusing out locally from there. <br />
<br />
Quicker still was spread via modern media. While initial reports from St. Petersburg downplayed the virus’ impact, but once the numbers of sufferers grew and included members of the Imperial family and the British ambassador to the city The Times and other European newspapers started to refer to an ‘epidemic of influenza.’ <br />
<br />
Papers provided accounts of the features of the flu as it radiated across Europe. As authors Bogumiła Kempińska-Mirosławska and Agnieszka WoŸniak-Kosek in their paper <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3867475/">“The influenza epidemic of 1889–90 in selected European cities – a picture based on the reports of two Poznań daily newspapers from the second half of the nineteenth century”</a> put it:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Newspapers published in many European cities (e.g., Paris – Le Temps and Le Matin, Berlin – Vossische Zeitung, and London – The Times) reported the spread of the disease in an up-to-date way and in an engaging manner. They gave detailed accounts of the symptoms and consequences of the disease, creating an image of the epidemic in the mind of the reader. Thanks to the press, the information on the spread of the disease tended to reach a given city faster than the epidemic itself. The fact that the epidemic was commented on in the daily press gave rise to a new reality, the so-called ‘media reality’. Although the aim of the commentaries was primarily informative, they influenced, whether intentionally or not, the moods and attitudes of the readers, as well as their behavior in the face of the threat. Depending on the character of the report, the newspapers could, for instance, evoke fear of the unknown."</blockquote>

The flu hit the Iberian Peninsula by mid-December.<br />

"At the beginning of January 1890, King Alfonso XIII of Spain fell ill, who was at the time five years old. After a temporary improvement his health deteriorated on around 10 January. Around 12 January, the condition of the king was already bad. It was reported that ‘the condition of the young Spanish king [caused] serious concern… The doctors [said] we should be prepared for a disaster soon, especially because the whole nervous system [was] attacked and the king [was] in the state of total indolence. Nevertheless, the doctors [did] not lose hope that he [would] survive’. The king’s illness caused a certain ‘ministry’ to remain in service for the duration of the king’s recovery, despite the ministry’s resignation ‘in order to alleviate the difficulties of the queen regent, so concerned about the fate of her only son’. Eventually, the king recovered."</blockquote>

Not so for Arthur Conan Doyle’s elder sister. Anne Mary Frances Conan Doyle (“Annette”), eldest child of Mary Foley and Charles Altamont Doyle, became a governess early in life to help support the family. <br />
<br />
“[A]t the very moment when my success would have enabled me to recall her from her long servitude,” wrote Doyle in his autobiography, she succumbed to the virus in Lisbon and died on January 13, 1890. As Doyle wrote to Amy Hoare, wife of Dr. Reginald Hoare to whom Doyle was a medical assistant in the late 1870s, Doyle offered to attend his sister but his mother Mary went alone.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I went to London & saw my mother off. She reached Lisbon 3 days before the end, but it is doubtful whether A[nnette] ever recognized her. We can hardly realise it yet—she was the prop of the family—the pick and flower of our little flock. She died just as Innes passed his preliminary. It was as if some higher power saw that she had some her work—her mission was fulfilled—and so called her away to the rest which she had earned. What nobler or more unselfish life could be imagined."  — <a href="https://amzn.to/2JfACDo"><i>Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters</i></a> (Foley, Lellenberg and Stashower, 2007)</blockquote>

The flu reached its deadly height in London in mid-January 1890 then rapidly declined. <br />
<br />
However, the second wave of May – June 1891 was more gradual and more fatal. In March of that year Doyle opened his ophthalmology practice in London at 2 Upper Wimpole Street. While he would later claim his practice was devoid of patients, an 1892 article in the December 27 Sydney Morning Herald stated: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“As a matter of course, he began to write, and very soon found out the evident incompatibility between the desk and the consulting-room. He was compelled to attend to his <span style="font-family: "Arno Pro",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">patients </span> in the morning, and spend most of the afternoon at the hospital, so that no time remained for his writing but a portion of the night." </blockquote>

This schedule with hospital duties could explain what happened next.<br />
<br />
“I was starting off for my usual trudge one morning from our lodgings,” he wrote in <a href="https://amzn.to/2xoXf5A"><i>Memories and Adventures</i></a>, <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"when icy shivers passed over me, and I only got back in time to avoid a total collapse. It was a virulent attack of influenza, at a time when influenza was in its deadly prime. Only three years before my dear sister Annette, after spending her whole life on the family needs, had died of it at Lisbon at the very moment when my success would have enabled me to recall her from her long servitude. Now it was my turn, and I very nearly followed her. I can remember no pain or extreme discomfort, and no psychic experiences, but for a week I was in great danger, and then found myself as weak as a child and as emotional, but with a mind as clear as crystal. It was then, as I surveyed my own life, that I saw how foolish I was to waste my literary earnings in keeping up an oculist's room in Wimpole Street, and I determined with a wild rush of joy to cut the painter and to trust for ever to my power of writing. I remember in my delight taking the handkerchief which lay upon the coverlet in my enfeebled hand, and tossing it up to the ceiling in my exultation. I should at last be my own master. No longer would I have to conform to professional dress or try to please any one else. I would be free to live how I liked and where I liked. It was one of the great moments of exultation of my life."</blockquote>

The date when the flu first struck was <b><i>May 4, 1891</i></b> — the date he gave to that confrontation between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty on the path on the Reichenbach Falls — and for ten years, the date of Holmes’s presumed death.<br />
<br />
If Doyle had been one of the 16,686 who succumbed to the flu in England and Wales of that year, it is doubtful that Sherlock Holmes or of Doyle’s then published body of work would be known to us today. Only STUD and SIGN had been published, SCAN, IDEN and REDH sent to <i>The Strand</i> but not yet published; <i>Micah Clarke</i> was well-received and sold well but has not stood the test of time.<br />
<br />
The social effects of the 1889–1893 flu pandemic in England were widespread. It hit regardless of social rank. Male wage earners were particularly hard hit; post office staff and railway workers and businessmen and clerks, those that kept the economic wheels turning.  <br />
<br />
The Archbishop of York died suddenly of the flu on May 5, 1891 and it struck Liberal leader William Gladstone later in the month as well as over seventy Members of Parliament and House of Lords. The fear of the disease lead to social anxieties. People even committed suicide because of the flu.<br />
<br />
In "<a href="https://academic.oup.com/shm/article/23/2/299/1646518">The Great Dread: Cultural and Psychological Impacts and Responses to the ‘Russian’ Influenza in the United Kingdom, 1889–1893</a>," Mark Honigsbaum “sees influenza and its so-called psychoses as inseparable from <i>fin de siècle</i> Victorian culture and then notions of neurology and mind-body.”<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The psychoses of influenza, I argue, both drew on existing cultural materials and helped mould them. As such, they are best viewed as part of a continuum of cultural and psychological responses to the Russian influenza which ranged from levity at one end of the spectrum to a dread of the life-threatening respiratory complications and the depression and psychosis that could follow such attacks at the other. As we have seen, this dread of influenza was exacerbated by social and economic pressures—in particular the pressure on male breadwinners to compete in the Victorian marketplace. However, in the case of certain susceptible individuals it could also itself become a ‘nervous’ symptom of the disease, part of the peculiar psychopathology of influenza and its debilitating mental sequelae. Hence, the dread of influenza could be exacerbated by the lethargy and feelings of malaise that frequently followed a primary attack and, in some cases, might also become confused with common ‘nervous’ responses to the disease, including depression and psychosis. A further reason for fearing the psychoses was their association with insanity at a time when madness was thought to be traceable to hereditary traits and thus carried the stigma of a degenerative ‘taint’."</blockquote>

One wonders if “brain fever,” common in the Canon, bears some relationship to those Victorian notions of neurology.<br />
<br />
Sadly, influenza was not done with Doyle. Both his brother Innes and, four months later, son Kingsley would die fro the flu during the 1918 pandemic. By this time Doyle's deep faith in Spiritualism was able to sustain him during these hardships.<br />

On Monday, we tried something we've never done before:<br />

We hosted and recorded an episode of our podcast <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/" target="_blank">Trifles</a> live on <a href="http://youtube.com/ihearofsherlock" target="_blank">YouTube</a> and <a href="http://facebook.com/ihearofsherlock" target="_blank">Facebook</a>. (<i>You do subscribe to us and like us there, right?</i>)<br />
<br />
After a few technical glitches, things got moving, and we were into our natural rhythm. During the first half of the show, we threw out a few of our ideas as to who were some of the characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories who faced <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles169" target="_blank">Loneliness and Isolation</a>.<br />
<br />
In the second half, we opened up the discussion to commenters and viewers, who were very kind, patient and encouraging. And they had some of the best suggestions!<br />
<br />
Little did we know that the streaming interface we were using to broadcast to both channels also allowed us to see the aggregated comments in one place (we were desperately going back and forth to Facebook and YouTube from our interface).<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, the effect of hosts and viewers coming together was a most rewarding one.<br />
<br />

With any luck, you'll be able to follow along; even if you can't watch live, it will be recorded for watching on demand, and the audio will be used as the basis of our show this week.<br />

Over the years, we've been fortunate to hear from listeners who've shared the various ways they listen to us: on roadtrips in the car, while gardening, during a commute, while walking, during work, etc.<br />
<br />
One refrain that has always amused your editor is when listeners tell us they listen to the show while going to sleep. Now, we're not sure if that means we bore people so effectively that they nod off, or that they're lulled into slumber by our mellifluous voices.<br />
<br />
With any luck, our conversation on Monday will be stimulating and will be peppered with your own ideas.<br />

Without a doubt, one of the most influential and memorable portayals of Sherlock Holmes in recent years is Jeremy Brett in the Granada / ITV production.<br />
<br />
And it was exactly 35 years ago today — on March 14, 1985 — that <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2U7qRvY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</a></i> made its premiere on American television via PBS.<br />
<br />
Michael Cox was the brainchild behind the production, and with the assistance of John Hawkesworth and a number of other writers, brought the series to life in an authentic Victorian era setting. It was lavishly produced and is remembered (at least in the first two or three series) as being very faithful to the original Canon.<br />
<br />
Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and David Burke as a level-headed, intelligent and ready-for-action Watson, the series burned an image of Sherlock Holmes into the minds of an entire generation. The series brought us guest stars that included such notables as Eric Porter, Roger Hammond, Jeremy Kemp, Joss Ackland, Gayle Hunnicut and many more.<br />
<br />
And when it played on PBS in the States, it was broadcast on Mystery! (later Masterpiece Mystery), with the inimitable Vincent Price as the host. <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/05/one-of-best-features-of-jeremy-brett.html#.XmxnGKhKjb0">His introductions were a highlight of the airings</a>.<br />

Dr. Watson is famous for the number of tantalizing unpublished cases he mentions throughout the Sherlock Holmes tales. In the opening of "The Problem of Thor Bridge," we come across a three particularly tantalizing stories:<br />

"Among these unfinished tales is that of Mr. James Phillimore, who, stepping back into his own house to get his umbrella, was never more seen in this world. No less remarkable is that of the cutter <i>Alicia</i>, which sailed one spring morning into a small patch of mist from where she never again emerged, nor was anything further ever heard of herself and her crew. A third case worthy of note is that of Isadora Persano, the well-known journalist and duellist, who was found stark staring mad with a match box in front of him which contained a remarkable worm said to be unknown to science."</blockquote>
The final case is one of the most extraordinary allusions Watson has ever made. It has been the subject of numerous pastiches, the earliest of which, "The Adventure of the Remarkable Worm" by Stuart Palmer, was part of <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3aI7gtj" target="_blank">The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes</a>,</i> edited by Ellery Queen. It is a brilliant and ingenious take on the mystery.<br />

VeggieTales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler

There have been so many famous partnerships through film and TV history who have played Sherlock Homes and Dr. Watson: Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Jeremy Brett and David Burke (and Edward Hardwicke), Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. And of course Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato.<br />
<br />
Okay, that last duo may not be as familiar to Sherlockians as some of the others. However, back in 2006, the popular Christian entertainment franchise VeggieTales released their 28th video, a Sherlock Holmes parody titled <a href="https://amzn.to/39h8hZ1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler</i></a>.<br />
<br />
The company had already tackled a couple other film/literature classics, such as the Phantom of the Opera (Sumo of the Opera), Indiana Jones (Minnesota Cuke), and the Lord of the Rings (Lord of the Beans). My children received the DVD as a gift several years ago, and I only recently watched it myself.  As Sherlock Holmes parodies go, this VeggieTales version is a fairly entertaining story, with a nice lesson on the value of treating people as you would like to be treated (the "Golden Rule," of course).<br />

As you can see from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVLTqMJEnGM" target="_blank">the trailer above</a> (click here if you can't see it), Bob and Larry (the regular hosts of all VeggieTales videos) portray a stereotypical representation of the Great Detective and his companion, complete with deerstalker cap, Inverness cape, pipe, magnifying glass, and even mutton chop whiskers for the good doctor. (This being children's media, however, Sheerluck's pipe only blows bubbles.)<br />
<br />
The story borrows an idea from the 1988 film Without a Clue, wherein Watson is the real brains of the duo, while Holmes is the one who gets all the attention. Indeed, every time the pair walks into their favorite pub, everyone shouts, "Sheerluck!" Watson ends up feeling a bit like a second-class citizen. I should also mention, the pub Holmes and Watson frequent is named "Doylie's," appropriately enough, and in an effort to be family friendly, only seems to serve milk.<br />
<br />
Sheerluck and his underappreciated friend are summoned to Buckingham Palace, to solve the mystery of a missing key, which unlocks the room where the valuable "Golden Ruler" is kept.<br />
<br />
While Watson does all of the actual detective work, looking for clues, Holmes is fairly clueless, especially when it comes to understanding the amazingly non-Scottish brogue of a policeman (portrayed by series regular Scooter Carrot). They are hampered in their investigation by a pair of bumbling policemen, and not Lestrade and Gregson, as a Sherlockian viewer may expect.<br />

Of course, the Golden Ruler eventually is stolen, and Watson is so frustrated by Sheerluck's hogging of the limelight, that he eventually leaves Holmes to investigate the case without him. Sheerluck encounters nothing but frustration as he tries to figure things out on his own, and finally realizes how badly he mistreated his friend, thereby learning the valuable lesson that one should treat others as one wishes to be treated.<br />

The case is solved by the friends working together, but you won't find any spoilers about the actual solution here.<br />

As far as children's media goes, this parody of Sherlock Holmes is pretty enjoyable, with entertaining antics and a nice moral for the kids, as well as several nods to Sherlockian canonical details that will make adults smile. (There are at least three repetitions of "the game's afoot" throughout the story, often accompanied by a clinking of milk glasses.)<br />
<br />
The animation, voice work, and writing are high quality, as any regular viewers of VeggieTales will have come to expect. I don't know if Bob and Larry will ever find a place in the pantheon of great Watson/Holmes duos, but they certainly aren't the worst "actors" to have filled the roles.<br />

If you acquire a <a href="https://amzn.to/2Iar8sv" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">DVD</a> of the video (or watch it <a href="https://amzn.to/3anhnna" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">streaming</a>, more likely) you may want to be aware that the Sheerluck Holmes story is preceded by a mildly amusing parody of Don Quixote ("The Asparagus of La Mancha") and a "Silly Songs with Larry" segment ("Gated Community," not really one of the better Silly Songs). The Sheerluck Holmes segment begins about halfway through.<br />

We're guessing you're familiar with the phrase, "Physician, heal thyself."<br />
<br />
Early references to this saying include the Luke 4:23 in the New Testament, in which Jesus is heard saying, "Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, 'Physician, heal thyself.'"<br />
<br />
But it goes back even further than that. There's a similar proverb in Genesis Rabbah 23:4: "Physician, Heal thine own limp!"<br />
<br />
Such proverbs also appear in literary Classical texts from at least the 6th century BC. The Greek dramatist Aeschylus refers to one in his <i>Prometheus Bound</i>, where the chorus comments to the suffering Prometheus, "Like an unskilled doctor, fallen ill, you lose heart and cannot discover by which remedies to cure your own disease."<br />
<br />
If these strains sound familiar to Sherlock Holmes fans, you may recall that in the opening of "The Stock-Broker's Clerk," Watson wrote about his practice in the Paddington district:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
"Old Mr. Farquhar, from whom I purchased it, had at one time an excellent general practice; but his age, and an affliction of the nature of St. Vitus’s dance from which he suffered, had very much thinned it. The public not unnaturally goes on the principle that he who would heal others must himself be whole, and looks askance at the curative powers of the man whose own case is beyond the reach of his drugs."</blockquote>
In the case of old Mr. Farquhar, it's likely that his case wouldn't have been treatable with drugs, as St. Vitus's dance (or more commonly, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydenham%27s_chorea">Sydenham's chorea</a>) was a neurological disorder brought on by streptococcus. Adult onset was rare and responds to modern steroid-based drugs, with about 50 percent of cases resolving themselves without intervention.<br />
<br />
But the point is clear: we have a bias toward harshly judging those who try to instruct or solve for things with which they themselves have no experience. Which takes us to Baker Street Elementary...<br />
