He was almost single-handedly responsible for the revival of interest of Sherlock Holmes in the 1970s with <i><a href="https://amzn.to/32iYkGT">The Seven Percent Solution</a></i>. Now, 45 years after his first novel about Sherlock Holmes, <b>Nicholas Meyer</b>, BSI ("A Fine Morocco Case") returns with <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2VLmfMH"><b>The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols</b></a></i>.<br />

The case takes us to January of 1905, when Holmes and Watson are summoned by Mycroft to undertake a clandestine investigation. A British Secret Service agent was found floating in the Thames with a manuscript smuggled into England that cost her life. The pages are supposedly the minutes of the meeting of a secret group intent on taking over the world: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Holmes and Watson are sent to determine whether it's a hoax, what the perpetrators are trying to accomplish, and why they want to keep their work out of the hands of the Secret Service.<br />

What's different this time around, some 19 years after his previous Holmes novel? Where did he get his inspiration? We talk to Nick about these things, plus his view of storytelling. As scholars of the Holmes canon, many Sherlockians often find themselves exploring the other literary work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Despite the canon being his “highlight,” there are many intriguing novels and stories that highlight Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing style.<br />

Two such examples are found in Elizabeth Crowen’s novels in the <b>Time Traveler Professor</b> series: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/35tFf6O" target="_blank">Silent Meridian</a></i> and the recently published follow up <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2qbTrRN" target="_blank">A Pocketful of Lodestones</a></i>.<br />
<br />
Both books center around John Patrick Scott, a man who partners with Conan Doyle around issues of spiritualism...and time travel. <i><b>Silent Meridian</b></i> consists of a series of adventures in time travel with a healthy dose of intrigue (including a shift in Scott’s relationship to Conan Doyle, the activities around a mysterious red book, and shifting encounters with a variety of Victorian-era historical figures).<br />
<br />
As the initial entry into the series, <i><b>Silent Meridian</b></i> reads more like several vignettes rather than a single novel, but that plays to Crowen’s strength as a writer. Ideas, plot strands, and characters are woven into the narrative in prose that reads like an approximation of Conan Doyle’s style yet maintaining a unique tone and voice.<br />

But <i><b>A Pocketful of Lodestones</b></i>, the second book, is where Elizabeth Crowens solidifies her voice and vision. Building on the events of <i>Silent Meridian</i>, Crowens crafts a more cohesive story by documenting Scott’s activities during World War I. Both books have a unique charm due to their wide panoply of clever and imaginative ideas that never feel forced or self-conscious. Elizabeth Crowens tells a very unique story across both volumes that serves as a delightful, enjoyable read.<br />
<br />
One of the delights of the book is how Crowens uses Arthur Conan Doyle as one of the lead characters. Although many Sherlockian pastiches integrate historical characters into their tales, Crowens’ inclusion of Conan Doyle never feels forced — in fact, Conan Doyle becomes a very intriguing character throughout both books.<br />
<br />
Although difficult to explain without spoiling, some of the events surrounding Scott’s and Conan Doyle’s relationship will be especially intriguing to Sherlockians. (And yes, Sherlock Holmes plays a key role throughout both books, but not in the way you might imagine). And there’s a passage in <i>A Pocketful of Lodestones</i> that will have you rethinking—and possibly revisiting—Conan Doyle’s work on <i>The Lost World</i>.<br />

Elizabeth Crowens deserves kudos for crafting a unique story through both <i>Silent Meridian</i> and <i>A Pocketful of Lodestones</i>, and will make you eager to catch a potential volume three. <br />

Early on in the Sherlock Holmes stories, we learn about Sherlock Holmes's aptitude with regard to philosophy. In his famous list titled "<i>Sherlock Holmes</i>—his limits," Watson lays out Holmes's strengths and weaknesses.<br />
<br />
Holmes's philosophical bent was the second item on Watson's list, and Holmes didn't fare well:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
2. [Knowledge of] Philosophy.—Nil.</blockquote>
<br />
And yet, he didn't have difficulty in defeating Professor Moriarty, who, as a professor of mathematics, Holmes also called "a genius, a philosophy, an abstract thinker." [FINA]<br />
<br />
Perhaps because Holmes himself was also an abstract thinker.<br />
<br />
Yes, he relied on data to form his opinions (“Data! data! data!” he cried impatiently. “I can’t make bricks without clay.” [COPP]), but he also was imaginative enough to consider different perspectives or possibilities that didn't occur to the traditional police.<br />
<br />
Take "Silver Blaze" for example. Holmes knew to look for the wax vesta that was buried in the mud, he observed animals (the dog, the sheep, etc.), and had this to say about the inspector who was in charge of the case:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Inspector Gregory, to whom the case has been committed, is an extremely competent officer. Were he but gifted with <i>imagination </i>he might rise to great heights in his profession.” [Emphasis ours.]</blockquote>
We're reminded of a quote from <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A great detective relies on perception, intelligence, and imagination."</blockquote>
<br />
And in that triumvirate of traits is much of what makes up a philosopher's approach.<br />
<br />
It's difficult to imagine Sherlock Holmes applying reason and perspective without using philosophy. Perhaps he picked up what he knew at Baker Street Elementary...</div>

Nearly a year and a half ago, we shared <b><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/07/remembering-joel-senter.html#.XZf4TkZKjb0" target="_blank">a remembrance of Joel Senter</a></b>, founder of the online Sherlockian shopping site Classic Specialties. His widow Carolyn wanted to do something to remember him to the Sherlockian world as well and approached the <a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/" target="_blank">Beacon Society</a> to express her desire.<br />
<br />
If you know the Beacon Society as we do (as co-founder and first Head-Light, I qualify), you'll know that its leadership is made up of the most selfless, creative and generous people of our corner of the world.<br />
<br />
They decided, thanks to generous contributions to people from around the world who knew Joel, to endow the <b><a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/joel-senter-essay-contest.html">R. Joel Senter, Sr. Essay Contest</a></b>. The essay contest brings together two worlds that meant so much to Joel: education and the great detective.<br />
<br />
Designed for students <b>between 4th and 12th grades</b> who have an interest in Sherlock Holmes, the award will be granted in three categories (based on grade level) for an essay concerning one of the selected stories authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
<br />
The primary rules for entering the contest:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Eligible entrants must be students in 4th to 12th grade in the United States and Canada.</li>
<li>Each Entrant must have an adult sponsor, 21 years of age or older (parent, teacher or family friend).</li>
<li>Sponsors may not write or edit the essay for Entrants. The essays must be entirely the work of the students.</li>
<li>The entrant must complete and submit the cover sheet/entry form and include it with the essay.</li>
<li>Sponsors and Entrants should read the section of the booklet for their grade, entitled Essay Questions carefully before starting the essay.</li>

One of the pleasures of collecting Sherlockian books is walking into old bookstores and—<i>sniff</i>—smelling that wonderful odor of old books. It brings with it a sense of contentment and anticipation, that soon you'll be enjoying something between the covers of an old book.<br />
<br />
One of the things we don't pause to reflect on though, is the odor of the streets in Victorian London. Stepping out for a walk as Holmes and Watson did in "The Resident Patient," they must have been overwhelmed with the vapors emanating from the thoroughfare.<br />
<br />
In the Winter 2016 <i><a href="http://ihose.co/BSJ" target="_blank">Baker Street Journal</a></i> (Vol. 66, No. 4) the late Peter Calamai, BSI ("<i>The Leeds Mercury</i>") referenced the "pervasive daily filth" that had "been largely scrubbed clean in the Canon." And Steve Mason, one of the trio that provides us with Baker Street Elementary every fortnight—and an administrator at the EPA—gave a talk at the Norwegian Explorers conference three years ago on sanitation and smells in Victorian London.<br />
<br />
As Calamai observed, the absence of mentioning the filth in the Sherlock Holmes stories could have been because it was such a commonly-experienced occurrence that it didn't warrant additional ink.<br />
<br />
Certainly, Watson's (and Holmes's) olfactory senses were attuned to other scents:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>In "<b>The Dancing Men</b>," Hilton Cubitt "seemed to bring a whiff of his strong, fresh, bracing, east-coast air with him as he entered."</li>
<li>In "<b>The Devil's Foot</b>," Watson inhaled the substance and found that "the very first whiff of it my brain and my imagination were beyond all control."</li>
<li>Holmes detected "the distinct odour of lime-cream" in Henry Baker's hat in "<b>The Blue Carbuncle</b>."</li>
<li>Watson noted the "subtle and aromatic aroma" of Thaddeus Sholto's hookah, and later that the air in Bartholomew's chamber "was heavy with a peculiarly pungent, tar-like odor" in <b><i>The Sign of Four</i></b>. Fortunately, Toby was able to track "the pungent smell of the creasote [that] rose high above all other contending scents."</li>
<li>Holmes mentioned a "faint but incisive scent" from gloves "that the curious tarry odour was oozing" in "<b>The Blanched Soldier</b>."</li>
<li>There was "a pleasant almondy odour" that arose from the jar of Prussic acid in "<b>The Veiled Lodger</b>."</li>
<li>Josiah Amberley chose to fill "his house with strong odors" to cover up some other smell in "<b>The Retired Colourman</b>."</li>
</ul>

There are certainly other instances; these are but <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/" target="_blank">trifles</a>. Meanwhile, let's sniff out what's going on over at Baker Street Elementary...</div>

In July 2013, the late <a href="https://multichannelmerchant.com/news/remembering-don-libey/" target="_blank">Don Libey</a> posed this question on an online forum: “Dr Watson uses the word ‘honeydew.’ Full particulars please; not just the Google gloss.”<br />

I was intrigued and had some questions that I wanted to answer; how did honeydew tobacco get its name, what was it origins, what brand could the cardboard box received by Sarah Cushing have been? One does start by googling but the paucity of information does force the researcher to delve deeper.<br />
<br />
The first thing that turns up in a Google search of “honeydew tobacco” is the sweet secretions left like drops of dew by aphids or naturally secreted by the plants themselves.  In <i><a href="http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/157227/2/tb1175.pdf" target="_blank">History and Status of the Green Peach Aphid as a Pest of Tobacco in the United States</a></i> by Frank Shirley Chamberlin (USDA, 1958) there is this quote:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Heavy infestations of aphids can severely stunt the growth of young tobacco plants in the field. As the initial distribution of aphids in a field is likely to be irregular, an uneven crop can result from early attacks. Stunting of older plants and withering of leaves may be caused by large populations of aphids. Their feeding on the foliage produces tobacco leaves of an inferior or worthless quality, this condition being accentuated in the relatively thin cigar-wrapper types. On such types of tobacco, which are harvested by cutting the whole plant, the yield and quality may be reduced by premature ripening of the lower leaves. Feinstein and Hannon have shown that aphid-damaged tobacco contains less nicotine than comparable undamaged tobacco. Injury is believed to be due mainly to the removal of plant juices, but may be caused in part by injected salivary secretions absorbed and translocated by the plant. The deposition of prevents normal curing and causes disfiguration due to the presents of adhering cast skins and sooty molds.”</blockquote>

Does this have anything to do with honeydew being a “kind of tobacco moistened with molasses?” There is no evidence that growers took the damaged tobacco and sweetened it to hide a substandard product. There is, in fact, evidence that growers took pride in producing a superior product. Early use of quotation marks around the term “honey-dew” would indicate it was perhaps named by analogy.<br />

<b> Origins</b></h2>
According to <b><i><a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=EtQrAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA527&dq=History+Of+American+Manufacturers+From+1608+To+1860,+honey+dew+tobacco&hl=en&sa=X&ei=DY8nUobMG-r94AOtkoDgBw&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=History%20Of%20American%20Manufacturers%20From%201608%20To%201860%2C%20honey%20dew%20tobacco&f=false" target="_blank">History of American Manufactures From 1608 To 1860, Volume 3</a></i></b>, James Thomas, Jr., a manufacturer of plug tobacco, specialized in lighter, “bright” tobaccos that made him well-known in the US and Europe.<br />

Plug or cut tobacco are cured leaves pressed together into a cake or “plug” and wrapped in a tobacco leaf, twisted and/or pressed, usually for chewing but can also be smoked in a pipe. It was sweetened with molasses, licorice, or rarely, honey.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“The art of sweetening tobacco with mass licorice was discovered about this time [“[s]ixty years ago”] by Mr. Jesse Hare, also of Richmond, and this discovery may be said to be the first step taken towards elevating the business to one of national importance. 'Honey Dew' tobacco, as several of the varieties containing this ingredient were afterwards called, yielded its supremacy at length to the bright-assortments subsequently introduced, and of which James Thomas, Jr., may be considered the pioneer and founder." (p. 527)</blockquote>

Another well-known name associated with honeydew tobacco is that of the Gravely family of Henry county, Virginia.  According to Steve Rucker in “<a href="http://www.mhchistoricalsociety.org/2018/05/15/the-tobacco-industry-in-the-city-of-martinsville-and-henry-county/" target="_blank">The Tobacco Industry in the City of Martinsville and Henry County</a>,” in 1792 “B. F. Gravely and Sons built a factory in Leatherwood.  Benjamin is credited with adding the essence of licorice to improve the flavor of plug tobacco. Around 1800, Gravely became world famous as a processor of plug tobacco.”<br />

Their flue-cured bright tobacco was sold as the popular brands “Payton Gravely,” “J.G. Gravely Fine pounds,” “Honey Dew,” “Kate Gravely Fine 9 inch.” </div>

John Redd Smith’s article “<a href="https://amzn.to/32HKcH5" target="_blank">Early Settlers of the Territory Now Occupied by Patrick and Henry Counties in Virginia</a>” notes:<br />

"When I (the writer) was an undergraduate medical student in New York City, something over a half century ago, I walked into a fashionable tobacco store on Broadway and requested the proprietor to show me a plug of the very finest chewing tobacco. Without the slightest hesitation he reached up to a shelf and took down a plug of B. F. Gravely’s 'Superior,' and laid it on the counter with an air of finality, as if there could be no room for discussion….Many years ago, when the great explorer, Henry M. Stanley, forced an expedition through six hundred miles of seemingly impenetrable forests to the rescue of Emin Bey [Mehmed Emin Pasha  b. March 28, 1840  d. October 23, 1892], and when he and Emin met formally on the shore of the lake [Lake Albert, 1888], it seemed the proper thing for them to exchange diplomatic presents. Emil [sic] Bey’s gift to Stanley included a pound of Peyton Gravely’s 'Honey Dew' tobacco."</blockquote>

Honeydew was a popular chewing tobacco enjoyed as “chaw” or in a pipe by both men and women in the U.S. Chaw was also very popular with sailors, from many nations, especially because of the fire hazard of smoking on wooden ships. <br />
<br />
Honeydew spread throughout Europe and the world. Honey-dew tobacco was advertised for sale in <i>The New Zealander</i> in Auckland at 4 shillings a pound in 1852 and described as "The best in town."<br />

<b>Tobacco in "The Cardboard Box"</b></h2>
How did Jim Browner use tobacco? There is actually no evidence within the story to form an opinion. No pipe or sealskin tobacco pouch in evidence; no quid in his mouth. No cigarettes or cigars. </div>

In fact, the cardboard box might even have been someone else’s discard picked up from the trash. While English sailors were more likely than the average Briton to chew tobacco, any conclusion one could make would be mere guesswork.<br />
<br />
While one can find many vintage honeydew tobacco tins, especially W.D. & H.O. Wills Gold Flake Honey-Dew cigarettes, cardboard would appear far more ephemeral. A clue, though, can be gleaned from W.R. Loftus’ <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=aAAAAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA1&lpg=PA1&dq=The+Tobacconist%E2%80%9D+A+Practical+Guide+to+the+Retail+Tobacco+Trade+in+all+its+Branches&source=bl&ots=jybcR6E5JP&sig=ACfU3U3C9L7L0ozFLZKVx3S_r2RexT1fsQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiV14vX-cvkAhUYs54KHQS5BQ8Q6AEwAHoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">The Tobacconist: A Practical Guide to the Retail Tobacco Trade in all its Branches</a> (1881).<br />

"<b>Cut Honeydew</b>. --- Honeydew is a general name given at the present day to leaf-tobacco of a light colour that has been pressed after a slight damping into frames of moulds, and then sold either in a cut or an uncut state. Not having undergone fermentation to any extent like shag or birdseye, honeydew is of necessity strong-smoking. It is, in fact, cavendish without the dark colour which the great bulk of cavendish possesses, unless sold in stamped custom wrappers, without the molasses or liquorice used in the preparation of sweet cavendish. As very little water is added to the leaves employed in the making of honeydew, it is requisite to charge a higher price for it that for shag or birdseye, in order to compensate for the loss of the profit realized by selling these tobaccos in a damp condition. Hence honeydew is consumed chiefly by the well-to-do classes, and by those only amongst them who can tolerate or enjoy a strong smoke. It is rarely sold loose. The different makers send it out almost entirely done up<b><i> in fancy packets of various sizes</i></b>." [Emphasis added.]</blockquote>

Loftus expands on this in the section <b>Packet Tobacco</b>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The increasing sale of almost every kind of tobacco in packets of definite weight, ready made up and labelled, has greatly changed the character of the retail trade throughout the country. All difficulty as to loss of weight by drying up in stock is thus removed; for, apart from the cases in which the tobacco is enclosed by the manufacturer in leadfoil, which practically prevents evaporation of the moisture, each package is sold to the customer as of the weight invoiced by the manufacturer, no allowance being made or expected for any difference of weight caused by keeping, so long as the tobacco remains enclosed in the original package, and has evidently not been tampered with since it came into the hands of the retailer."</blockquote>

Under the subhead <b>Cake and Roll Tobacco</b>, Loftus says both cavendish and honeydew come in two types, sweetened and unsweetened and “sweetened tobacco must, by law, be enclosed in stamped Government wrappers before it can go into home-consumption. A heavy fine is imposed for any violation of this rule.”<br />
<br />
Apparently, honeydew and other tobaccos were sold to local tobacconists directly imported from the tobacco manufacturers in preweighed packets, with the sweetened type of cake tobacco further enclosed in official wrappers.</div>

<b>"A Yellow, Half-Pound Honeydew Box"</b></h2>
In my online search I came across a photo of a yellow(ing) cardboard box of honeydew tobacco. In 2012, renovations of the Inverness Steeple, in Inverness, Scotland, uncovered papers wrapped in wax paper tied in sisal string. Those papers along with other modern day items, including a Nokia cell phone were placed in a time capsule that November, to be opened in 100 years’ time, in 2112. </div>

Then in May 2013, <a href="https://www.highland.gov.uk/news/article/7051/inverness_town_steeple_reveals_more_secrets_from_the_past" target="_blank">there was another find</a>: </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Joiners working at Inverness town steeple on the corner of Bridge Street and Church Street have uncovered another time capsule during the historic building’s renovation works. This earlier find is believed to date from 1878 and is the second discovery within the past 8 months. It predates, by 45 years, another package dating from 1923 which was discovered during October 2012 in the steeple. Tony Russell and Jordan Fraser of D.Y. Fraser Joiners, Inverness were carrying out works on the interior of the steeple building for The Highland Council when Tony revealed the find on Thursday 9 May 2013.”</blockquote>

In a recess that was later covered over by a staircase Russell and Fraser found a Havana cigar box which contained:<br />
<ul>
<li>A booklet published by the American Sabbath Tract society itemising “The brief grounds serving to prove that the Ten Commandments are in full force and shall remain so…” </li>
<li>A Savings’ Book of Inverness Bank dated 1878; </li>
<li>A notebook with the signature of Angus McNeill; </li>
<li>A small envelope with a Penny Brown Stamp posted in Manchester on Jan 1878 and addressed to – Mr D.C.Taylor, Tobacconist, 1 Church Street, Inverness; </li>
<li>Inside the envelope were receipts dated 1877 from Sutton Company Parcel Express and their agents Robert Paton of Glasgow; and a Happy New Year message on a memo from Alexander Taylor, Pawnbroker, Manchester to Mr Taylor in Inverness. </li>
<li>Headed notepaper of the Prudential Assurance Company, 62 Ludgate Hill, London; </li>
<li>3 Promotional cards itemising “Free Fishing Days on the River Ness” published by the Inverness Advertiser in February 1878, and </li>
<li>A small ‘Honey Dew’ tobacco box containing coins including old pennies and shillings with dates ranging between 1851 and 1877. </li>

Based on the coins inside the box, <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose128" target="_blank">Greg Ruby</a>, in a private conversation, surmised the box was about three inches square (the average human ear is about 2.6 inches square).  The cover has a printed red ribbon reading “Bright Flaked Honey Dew” but no other markings as to size or brand. </div>

Holmes says of the box sent to Miss Cushing, “The box is a yellow, half-pound honeydew box, with nothing distinctive save two thumb marks at the left bottom corner.” [CARD]</div>

This description would fit the box shown; nothing distinctive, just the type of tobacco, not even the weight of the contents, although Holmes and most other tobacco users would probably be able to tell the amount. </div>

Now we have an example of a honeydew tobacco cardboard box and can see for ourselves the basis for a Sherlockian tale and a Canonical title. <br />

On September 12, 1995 Jeremy Brett passed away. It has now been 24 years since his death.<br />
<br />
Many have hailed Brett as the definitive Sherlock Holmes, although it can be argued that each generation has its own definitive Holmes. In our estimation, the value of Brett's performance as Sherlock Holmes is twofold: 1) the careful crafting of the Victorian setting and (in the earlier episodes mostly) the faithful adaptation of the Canon; and 2) Brett's own interest and expertise in the Canon and Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
In <b><i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/studyincelluloid.html" target="_blank">A Study in Celluloid</a></i></b> (Wessex Press), Michael Cox, the producer of the Granada series noted that often times in script readings, Jeremy would make suggestions the steer the writing toward the Canon, with entire paragraphs of dialog being lifted directly from the original writings. Indeed, the team even had their own reference guide that kept the production crew and cast well informed as to Holmes's appearance and habits called <a href="https://amzn.to/2NW5FrG" target="_blank"><b><i>The Baker Street File</i></b></a> (occasionally available from Amazon).<br />
<br />
We personally remember the outpouring of grief and memories that were shared online in 1995—the early days of the Internet—through discussion forums and listservs, and wonder just how the web would have exploded had his death occurred in the present day.<br />
<br />
<br />
Brett's career was long and spanned television, film and the stage. And while we won't detail all of it here—sites like <a href="http://brettish.com/" target="_blank">The Brettish Empire</a> pay him tribute—we will share a couple of tidbits that bring us enjoyment as we remember Jeremy.<br />
<br />
The first is the opening Baker Street scene in Granada's "The Resident Patient," <a href="https://youtu.be/vT5_Gx217wY?t=226" target="_blank">beginning at 3:44</a> in the video below. The subtle eye movements, the smile and the general sentiment toward Watson are a wonderful encapsulation of so much of the interaction we see between Holmes and Watson in the Canon.<br />

The second is a rather funny story from David Stuart Davies' biography of Brett, <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/2NWJ4Lo" target="_blank">Bending the Willow</a></i></b>. As you may know, Jeremy Brett suffered from manic depression and occasionally had bouts throughout the Granada filming.<br />
<br />
His Watsons, David Burke and Edward Hardwicke, were not only both aware of his condition, but were also very supportive. If anything, Jeremy's own sense of humor and frankness came through, as this anecdote reveals:<br />

One incident that David Burke recounted brought the house down at The Northern Musgraves' Jeremy Brett Memorial Lunch. It is a tale that reveals not only Brett‘s humour and eccentricity, but also his endearing, self-effacing qualities:<br />

'Jeremy said to me on one occasion, "I was feeling so low the other day that I sent myself a fan letter."<br />

' "I‘m absolutely serious."<br />

' "Dear Jeremy, I would just like to say what a wonderful actor you are. Your Sherlock Holmes puts every other attempt at the part in the shade. Basil Rathbone is not fit to clean your boots; and Douglas Wilmer and Robert Stephens should beg you to give them lessons. You're much prettier than all of them, for a start. There is only one word for your performance - magic. Please send me a signed photograph. Yours, Joe Bloggs. P.S. I've heard that you're really nice person, too."<br />

Using the ground as a hiding place for one's crime is nothing new. According to the tradition in the Bible, the first child of Adam and Eve was Cain, who was a tiller of soil. He killed his brother Abel and buried him in the field.<br />
<br />
But you can't hide that kind of thing from God, who at that time only had four people to monitor on the Earth. God said:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"What have you done? Listen! your brother's blood cries out to me from the soil."</blockquote>
How many of the Sherlock Holmes stories involve burial as a method of keeping a crime from being discovered?<br />
<br />
In <i><b>The Sign of Four</b></i>, the ultimate in buried treasure stories, we come across two instances of buried treasure. Major Sholto's two sons assumed that the Agra treasure would be buried on the grounds of Pondicherry Lodge, and over the course of six years dug for it.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“It looks as though all the moles in England had been let loose in it. I have seen something of the sort on the side of a hill near Ballarat, where the prospectors had been at work.”</blockquote>
But the Four got their hands on the treasure by first murdering the merchant Achmet, who was carrying the iron box that contained the treasure. They buried him and the treasure in the same area of the fort.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"We carried the box, therefore, into the same hall where we had buried the body, and there, under certain bricks in the best-preserved wall, we made a hollow and put our treasure."</blockquote>
In "<b>Silver Blaze</b>," Holmes found the wax vesta that was "invisible, buried in the mud."<br />
<br />
"<b>The Musgrave Ritual</b>" was another buried treasure story, originating in the 17th century when the royal party fled and "left many of their most precious possessions buried behind them, with the intention of returning for them in more peaceful times."<br />
<br />
In "<b>The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax</b>," a specially constructed coffin concealed the unconscious lady, in an attempt to bury her with the corpse of a deceased elderly woman.<br />
<br />
There are other instances of burying valuables, but not in the earth:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The "small sliding shutter" that hid the photograph [SCAN] </li>
<li>The "small black cavity" beneath the hinged square of wood in the floor [SECO]</li>
<li>The "square piece of board" under the carpet that covered the T joint of the gas-pipe [NAVA]</li>
<li>A square that "had opened in the planks" in the rooms of Nathan Garrideb [3GAR[</li>
</ul>

We've often remarked on Christopher Morley's bon mot that the totality of Sherlock Holmes stories is "<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/11/a-textbook-of-friendship.html#.XW0gFihKjb0">a textbook of friendship</a>." But the Canon is so rich in details that could be considered true to life that there are other elements of Victorian life that we're exposed to on a regular basis.<br />
<br />
Conan Doyle's skill as a storyteller is evident: he didn't need to spend a great deal of time or space writing about certain elements; he knew when to "cut out the poetry" [RETI] and when to evoke emotion from his descriptions.<br />
<br />
Since today is Labor Day in the United States, consider the various jobs and professions in the stories. We're generally not treated to a detailed description of them, because it was assumed that readers knew what these individuals did simply by virtue of the name of the job.<br />
<br />
But to go through the list of occupations in the Canon is to have a snapshot of daily life. From plumbers (CHAS) to bank presidents (REDH, BERY), doctors (too many to list) to lawyers (NORW, SUSS), cab drivers (multiple) to carpenters (REDH), and grooms (so many) to governesses (COPP, THOR, WIST), we're treated to a roll call of jobs we know and understand.<br />
<br />
But there are other occupations that we might not come across on a daily basis. A bodymaster in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, a garroter in "The Empty House," a yeggman in "The Musgrave Ritual." An engineer even got his own story and we had ample opportunity to understand the type of work he did ("The Engineer's Thumb").<br />
