Insects don't get a lot of attention in the Sherlock Holmes stories, although they do crawl in from time to time.<br />
<br />
In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Watson first encountered Stapleton when the moor resident was chasing down butterflies.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A tin box for botanical specimens hung over his shoulder and he carried a green butterfly-net in one of his hands."</blockquote>
<br />
Stapleton's study in Merripit House contained his remarkable collection of <i>Lepidoptera</i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The room had been fashioned into a small museum, and the walls were lined by a number of glass-topped cases full of that collection of butterflies and moths the formation of which had been the relaxation of this complex and dangerous man."</blockquote>

And when Holmes and Watson visited the home of Nathan Garrideb in "The Three Garridebs," this consummate collector's surroundings were described by Watson:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The room was as curious as its occupant. It looked like a small museum. It was both broad and deep, with cupboards and cabinets all round, crowded with specimens, geological and anatomical."</blockquote>

Even two individuals in the Canon had attributes that were positively insect-like. Can you identify each and the stories in which they appeared?<br />

<li>"The man drew out paper and tobacco and twirled the one up in the other with surprising dexterity. He had long, quivering fingers as agile and restless as the antennae of an insect."</li>
<li>"The Baron has little waxed tips of hair under his nose, like the short antennae of an insect. These quivered with amusement as he listened, and he finally broke into a gentle chuckle."</li>

Finally, the most notorious individual connected with insects must be little Edward Rucastle, whose interactions with bugs were described by his proud father Jephro:<br />

"One child—one dear little romper just six years old. Oh, if you could see him killing cockroaches with a slipper! Smack! smack! smack! Three gone before you could wink!"</blockquote>
But more than a father's twisted sense of pride, the following description of little Edward should have been an early indicator of the cruelty that pervaded the Copper Beeches:<br />

"His whole life appears to be spent in an alternation between savage fits of passion and gloomy intervals of sulking. Giving pain to any creature weaker than himself seems to be his one idea of amusement, and he shows quite remarkable talent in planning the capture of mice, little birds, and insects."</blockquote>

It's an approach that we hope brings more people into our fold who are new to Sherlock Holmes and are fascinated with the details within the story, or who may have some questions about what they read.<br />

The world knows Sherlock Holmes as a master detective – a professional who assists Scotland Yard in tracking down criminals. But in reality, in his role as a private consulting detective, there were instances when he was approached simply for advice, not because a crime was taking place.<br />
<br />
In fact, there was an instance when Sherlock Holmes became so annoyed with being consulted for minor occurrences that he complained,<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"As to my own little practice, it seems to be degenerating into an agency for recovering lost lead pencils and giving advice to young ladies from boarding-schools."</blockquote>
Some of the most memorable cases in which clients sought advice included:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>"A Case of Identity" in which Mary Sutherland questioned what happened to her suitor (who turned out to be someone else entirely);</li>
<li>"The Noble Bachelor," where Lord Robert St. Simon lost his betrothed following their wedding ceremony;</li>
<li>"The Copper Beeches" (the story from which the quote above was taken), when Violet Hunter consults Sherlock Holmes about taking a governess job that paid twice as much as market rates;</li>
<li>"The Yellow Face" turned out to be nothing more than a cry for marriage counseling;</li>
<li>"The Missing Three-Quarter" was a matter of the whereabouts of a wayward athlete;</li>
<li>"The Sussex Vampire" concerned the verification of a mythical monster.</li>
</ul>

So, not all run-of-the-mill murder, blackmail, or robbery for Sherlock Holmes. We even begin to discern some of the unusual consulting he gave at Baker Street Elementary...</div>

"You do occasionally find a carrion crow among the eagles," Holmes tells Watson in "Shoscombe Old Place," using an avian metaphor to describe the possibility that Sir Robert Norberton is a bad 'un. It's not a kind way to speak of crows, who by all informed accounts are highly intelligent and social creatures, but he said it and we have to deal with it.<br /><br />Norberton is the only crow mentioned in the canonical stories, unless we count "the Crow Hill mine" referred to in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>. Or unless we are using a carefully selected edition of the stories, such as a version of the Doubleday <i><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=Doyle&bi=0&bx=off&cm_sp=SearchF-_-Advtab1-_-Results&ds=30&recentlyadded=all&sortby=17&sts=t&tn=Complete%20Sherlock%20Holmes&yrh=1960&yrl=1930">Complete Sherlock Holmes</a></i> published between 1930 and 1960. For there, behold what we find in chapter 3 of <i>The Sign of Four</i>, in the episode where Holmes and Watson accompany Mary Morstan to meet her mysterious benefactor:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">
"At the Lyceum Theatre the crows were already <a href="https://twitter.com/HarrytownSchool/status/887375553334054918" target="_blank">thick at the side-entrances</a>."</blockquote>
<br />The word should, of course, be "crowds," as it was in earlier editions and later ones as well. Newt and Lilian Williams, prominent figures now greatly missed by their friends in the Occupants of the Empty House in central Illinois, discovered this amusing typographical error in the 1970s. It launched them on a massive project to identify all the errors in the Doubleday text (and there are many of them) which they came to call <b>The Great Crow Hunt.</b> <br /><br />My father, <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/11/remembering-donald-redmond-bsi-2s.html#.XJZjwChKjb0">Donald A. Redmond</a>, BSI, 2s ("Good Old Index"), dedicated his 1990 book about the printing of the Canon, <i><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&an=Redmond&tn=Sherlock+Holmes+among+the+Pirates&kn=&isbn=">Sherlock Holmes among the Pirates</a></i>, to Newt and Lilian. And Les Klinger, compiling his <a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/signoffour.html"><i>Sherlock Holmes Reference Library</i> volume for <i>The Sign of Four</i></a>, was able to consult the Williamses' much-marked-up copy of the Baring-Gould <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&an=Baring+Gould&tn=Annotated+Sherlock+Holmes&kn=&isbn="><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, now treasured in the Occupants' library under the name of <i>The Annotated Annotated</i>. It records: <blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Peter Blau and Cameron Hollyer determined that the 'crows' appeared first in the Crowborough edition." </blockquote>

Crowborough was the village near the country home where Arthur Conan Doyle spent his final years; its name regrettably comes not from crows but from an old English word for yellow. The "Crowborough edition" of ACD's writings, in 24 volumes, was produced at the end of the author's life, in 1930, by Doubleday, who subsequently used some of the typesetting in the Complete SH — including the Crowborough crows.<div>
<br />Perhaps it was the memory of all these theatre-going crows that stimulated Canadian novelist Shane Peacock to make the birds play a significant role in his first "Boy Sherlock Holmes" novel, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Eye-Crow-Sherlock-Holmes-Case/dp/0887769195/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Eye+of+the+Crow&qid=1553360504&s=gateway&sr=8-1"><i>Eye of the Crow</i></a>, which appeared in 2007. <br /><br />So much for the crows who are birds. For the record, there is also Erasmus Crow, one of the victims in "The Adventure of the Reluctant Corpse" by Matthew J. Elliott, which appears in Volume III of the never-ending <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/interview-with-david-marcum-editor-of-the-mx-book-of-new-sherlock-holmes-stories/"><i>MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories</i></a>. <br /><br />And many of us are acquainted with <a href="https://twitter.com/221Bcrow" target="_blank">@221BCrow</a>, who is an actual person, a writer and enthusiast of Victorian gay history well known in the Sherlockian twittersphere and the Pacific Northwest.<br /><br />In a different category are the crows who are sounds rather than winged creatures. "Finally," Watson writes, again in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, "he [Holmes] broke out into a loud crow of delight." That's not the hoarse caw of the crow, but a totally unrelated sound that has been called by the same word at least since the first English translation of the Bible a thousand years ago, which contains the phrase "Se cocc crawe," the cock crew.</div>

<br />It is, in fact, the same noise referred to in "The Norwood Builder" as "Lestrade's little cock-a-doodle of victory". And that's a peculiarly interesting phrase because, if you look up "cock-a-doodle" in the <i>Oxford English Dictionary</i>, one of the quotations documenting the word's use comes from the 1853 novel Peg Woffington by Charles Reade. "It seemed not unlike a small cock-a-doodle-doo of general defiance," Reade wrote, in a book Conan Doyle must certainly have read (he was a great admirer of Reade's later and greater book <i>The Cloister and the Hearth</i>) and, it seems pretty clear, borrowed — and improved — for "The Norwood Builder".<br /><br />Apart from crows, there are other corvids, notably ravens, which figure in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> as a pair of them "croaked loudly from a tor." Faced with Selden's body, Holmes observes that "We cannot leave it here to the foxes and the ravens." The Canon also twice refers to "raven" hair; in both instances the black tresses are borne by villains.</div>

<br />As far as I can tell, the tales make no mention of rooks, jackdaws, or magpies, and there is just one jay: Abe Slaney, captured at the end of "The Dancing Men," laments that Holmes tricked him with "a note which made me walk in here, like a jay, and give myself into your hands." I have no idea what that idiom is supposed to mean.</div>

Titled "an annual capsule of a timeless past & future," the <i><a href="http://greenbag.org/BSA/bsa.html?fbclid=IwAR00bbB0H3ymytRrxJnsvPL1w9oUxTGJxV3bkRrMm1CI7_0j_j6-h2WO79g">Baker Street Almanac</a></i> is the brainchild of Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple"). Followers of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere may recall when Ross appeared on our show to discuss <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose137">Boxes from Royalty</a>.<br />
<br />
Now in its second year, the <i>Baker Street Almanac</i> is a publication of both print and electrons, and Ross indicated what this volume might be <a href="http://www.rossdavies.org/misc/Baker%20Street%20Almanac%20-%20readable%20(2018).pdf">in the inaugural edition last year</a>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"If all goes well, next year’s <i>Baker Street Almanac</i> will not be like the scrap of paper you are holding now. It will be a plump book of Sherlockian data — substantial, elaborate, fact-and-fun-filled.  There will be records of — and refletions on — 2018: lists and timelines and tables and directories and maps and so on. And there will be sprinklings of miscellaneous morsels — all Sherlockian, or nearly so. It will be our first big “annual capsule of a timeless past and future.” And it will be available in two formats: electronic (for free online to all) and ink-on-paper (for a pittance to all who pay)." </blockquote>
Last year's edition also included an article from <i>Ford Times</i>, a magazine similar to <i>Reader's Digest</i> or <i>Yankee Magazine</i> published by Ford Motor Company (your editor's former employer — as you'll see below) from 1916:<br />

"In 1916, Henry Ford and Arthur Conan Doyle spoke out on opposite sides of the question of American neutrality in World War I, as the editorials reproduced on page 2 of this edition of the <i>Baker Street Almanac</i> show. But disagreement did not deter Ford and Doyle from capitalizing on each other’s iconic creations. Ford went first, using Doyle’s icon — Sherlock Holmes — to appeal to Britons to buy Ford cars. In August 1916, the Sherlockian parody, “ The Disappearance of Alice Nosegay” — featuring detective Sheerluck Jones — appeared in the U.K. edition of <i>Ford Times</i>, Ford Motor Company’s consumer-oriented magazine. (This was about a century before the brass at Ford got smart and hired "Corporal Henry Wood" to sharpen the cutting edge of their marketing communications.) In the story, a Ford car is an important prop in Sheerluck Jones’s successful romancing of Alice Nosegay.  The unspoken but obvious message: Find a Ford, find true love.  The original version of “ The Disappearance of Alice Nosegay” is reproduced on page 3 of this edition of the <i>Baker Street Almanac</i>."</blockquote>

I'd posted about the 2019 Baker Street Almanac the other day, and ‪the print edition arrived yesterday. Card cover wrapped in a map, bound with ribbon and a postcard stuck on front. It’s a thing of beauty. I was almost loath to open it, it’s so lovely, but there was more within! The wrapper unfolds to a double sided 18 x 25.5 inch double sided map and poster, on one side a reprinting of ‘The Adventure of the Clothes-Line’ (1915) with great FDS illustrations reproduced and on the other side a cartographical presentation of ‘How Watson Learned the Trick’. The interior was not without surprises as well, a bookmark cryptically hand numbered numbered 3001, a reproduction Turf cigarette card and a Hound of the Baskervilles library punch card repro.<br />

As always, I am in awe of the creative talent and effort expressed by BSI classmate, Ross Davies, in putting things like this together. This is a wonderful package. While you can read the contents free online, there's plenty to commend about the print edition.</blockquote>

You'll recall that <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2019/02/baker-street-elementary-alls-well-that.html#.XIR81yhKjb0">in last our last Baker Street Elementary strip</a>, we discussed the connection between H.G. Wells and Sherlock Holmes, made through Manly Wade Wellman's work <i>Sherlock Holmes's the War of the Worlds</i>.<br />
<br />
The original <i>The War of the Worlds</i> was developed into <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_(radio_drama)">a radio drama in 1938</a> by <i>The Mercury Theater on the Air</i> (more on that shortly) famously directed and narrated by Orson Welles (no relation to H.G.) on October 30, 1938. The production was so convincingly done that some listeners mistook it for a program of real news bulletins and some broadcasters called for better regulation of the new-ish audio medium.<br />
<br />
The Mercury Theater on the Air was created by Orson Welles and first aired on July 11, 1938 on CBS Radio. Welles' idea was to adapt classic literary works to an hour-long radio drama and use his Mercury Theater repertory company (established in 1937). The first episode was <i>Dracula</i>, followed by <i>Treasure Island</i>. Interestingly, both Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson were contemporaries and associates of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
But just one month prior to the now-infamous <i>The War of the Worlds</i> episode – on September 25, 1938 – the Mercury Theater performed an adaptation of William Gillette's play <i>Sherlock Holmes</i>. Welles took the title role, with Ray Collins as Dr. Watson (Collins later went on to portray Lt. Tragg in <i>Perry Mason</i> on television. One other connection of interest: Orson Welles later went on to play Professor Moriarty in the <a href="https://archive.org/details/1CharlesAugustusMilverton">John Gielgud / Ralph Richardson radio adaptations</a> <i>The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> from 1955.<br />

One look at the library of Otto Penzler's country home, and you'd think you're in a Barnes and Noble.<br />

Otto's name is well-known in the world of detective and mystery fiction. He established <a href="http://mysteriouspress.com/">Mysterious Press</a> in the 1970s and opened <a href="https://www.mysteriousbookshop.com/">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> soon thereafter. Each January during the BSI Weekend, Otto hosts an open house at his store for Sherlockians.<br />

We've chatted with Otto twice before on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: once in <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose17">Episode 17</a> to talk about his collection and again in <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose87">Episode 87</a> on the release of <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Sherlock-Holmes-Stories/dp/1101870893/">The Big Book of Sherlock Holmes Stories</a></i>.<br />

We were chatting with Otto during the BSI Weekend this year, and were surprised to learn that Otto's collection is up for sale (auction, really) over the next few years, <a href="https://historical.ha.com/c/search-results.zx?N=49+793+794+792+2088+4294946493+4294967055&type=friend-consignorpreview-notice">beginning next week</a>. Otto updates his Facebook page:<br />

"The first sale has only about 300 books (of the 5,300 that Heritage Auctions will be selling over the next couple of years) but they are pretty terrific. "The books will be exhibited at the Heritage New York office from noon Sunday [March 3] and on Monday and Tuesday, then the auction will be held at noon on Wednesday [March 6]. I'm deeply depressed about parting with my much-loved books but also looking forward to seeing what happens and what homes they will find. I was asked to write an introduction to the catalogue and a small piece for <i>National Review</i>, and have been extensively interviewed by a radio syndicate and the <i>New York Post</i>. The sale is a big deal in book collecting circles!"</blockquote>

Otto isn't kidding. In browsing through the Heritage Auctions site of his collection, it's absolutely breathtaking. It certainly shows the discerning eye of an expert collector, with the attention to detail, multiple inscribed and signed first editions, and dust jackets galore.<br />
