You’ll hear about his early experiences joining and leading scion societies, and how his cartoons became an eagerly anticipated feature of <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> and other Sherlockian publications.</div><div><br />We dive into his artistic roots, from his childhood copying of TV cartoons to art school, and his career as a successful graphic artist. We talk about the great animators and illustrators who shaped his style, from Chuck Jones and Tex Avery to the great Walt Kelly. And we wrap up with a look back at his first Baker Street Irregulars dinner, and the unusual story behind his investiture as “Dr. Grimesby Roylott.”</div><div><div><br /></div><div><div>Our “<b>Learned Societies</b>” segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities rounding out the second half of November. Then, it’s the latest edition of “<b>Examining the Pictures</b>,” with the film critic, journalist, and author Christian Monggaard, BSI, with his review of the fourth and final season of the BBC’s <i>Sherlock </i>series. Finally, the <b>Canonical Couplet</b> quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of <i>"Is This a Joke, Mr. Holmes?"</i> for the winner. Responses range from mild laughter to eye rolls.</div><div><br /></div><div>That got us to thinking while there are plenty of <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2021/06/sherlock-holmes-and-fathers-day.html#:~:text=The%20heroic%20John%20Ferrier%20and%20magnanimous%20Grant%20Munro,just%20how%20abusive%20and%20criminal%20some%20can%20be." target="_blank">fathers and father figures</a> in the Sherlock Holmes stories, what is the state of dad jokes — or more broadly, jokes overall? We find a mixed bag.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes as an Excuse</h3><div>Let's begin with father figures. Who can you think of that, when brought to justice, claimed they were only joking?</div><div><br /></div><div>The first is a stepfather, who, in collusion with Mary Sutherland's mother, duped her into believing Hosmer Angel was a real suitor in "A Case of Identity": </div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“It was only a joke at first,” groaned our visitor.</div><div>“We never thought that she would have been so carried away.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>In "The Norwood Builder," Jonas Oldacre was smoked out of his hiding place after John Hector McFarlane was accused of his murder:</div><div></div><blockquote><div>The wretched creature began to whimper.</div><div>“I am sure, sir, it was only my practical joke.”</div></blockquote></div><div>And later, has he was being taken away by Inspector Lestrade: </div><div><blockquote><div>“It was a joke, my good sir, a practical joke, nothing more,” he whined incessantly. “I assure you, sir, that I simply concealed myself in order to see the effect of my disappearance, and I am sure that you would not be so unjust as to imagine that I would have allowed any harm to befall poor young Mr. McFarlane.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>In order to dismiss any fear her husband might have or keep him from harm, Elsie Cubitt claimed that the dancing men cipher was a joke: </div><blockquote><div>“She answered that it was some senseless practical joke, and that I should not take any notice of it.” </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes Eliminated as Motives</h3><div>There are also instances of jokes being eliminated as a motive in certain dire circumstances.</div><div><br /></div><div>When he awoke to find the house abandoned in "Wisteria Lodge," John Scott Eccles told Holmes:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I was furious. My first idea was that I had been the victim of some absurd practical joke.” </div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes and Lestrade, discussing the motive of the severed ears arriving in "The Cardboard Box": </div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“You have observed, of course,” said he at last, “that the ears are not a pair.”</div><div>“Yes, I have noticed that. But if this were the practical joke of some students from the dissecting-rooms, it would be as easy for them to send two odd ears as a pair.”</div><div>“Precisely. But this is not a practical joke.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes played things up for Culverton Smith in "The Dying Detective," getting the criminal to admit that he sent Holmes a poisoned booby-trap:</div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“Yes, yes, I opened it. There was a sharp spring inside it. Some joke—”</div><div>“It was no joke, as you will find to your cost.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Mistaken for a Joke</h3><div>And there are cases where something considered a joke when Sherlock Holmes knew something much more serious was at stake:</div><div><br /></div><div><div>After Jabez Wilson discovered he had been duped to be away from his shop, he viewed it as an inconvenience and a monetary loss:</div><div></div><blockquote><div>“But I want to find out about them, and who they are, and what their object was in playing</div><div><div>this prank—if it was a prank—upon me. It was a pretty expensive joke for them, for it cost them two and thirty pounds.”</div></div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>In "The Five Orange Pips," John Openshaw's father was left with the effects of his own brother, Colonel Openshaw. When an envelope arrived and told him to "put the papers on the sundial," the elder Openshaw dismissed the threat and remarked:</div><div><blockquote><div>“ ‘Some preposterous practical joke,’ said he. ‘What have I to do with sundials and papers? I shall take no notice of such nonsense.’</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>When the race was over and Colonel Ross wondered where the murderer of John Straker was, Sherlock Holmes claimed that he was "In my company at this moment." Ross didn't take kindly to it:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I quite recognize that I am under obligations to you, Mr. Holmes,” said he, “but I must regard what you have just said as either a very bad joke or an insult.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>The jokes that fly at Baker Street Elementary are nowhere near as mistakable...</div><div><br /></div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Related:</h4><div><i>Trifles</i> <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2021/12/episode-259-did-sherlock-holmes-have.html" target="_blank">Episode 259 - Did Sherlock Holmes Have a Sense of Humor?</a></div><div><br /></div><div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEl5LDRzbmo1Ezq09PsSEwUpSLCqkse-0Glm-cVrG_LRKxUWRftnmb8ng-H0I_jWd9ebDCxz-7bVcwgkrhfTaAQ_1dQB_mGafVNy2CZdK_zfdzQLxceb14Q-F21u-TwQYVK0KFVFAjZXJDThH6f_EnJnMB6IavFjjREaDL7amw6ev-JDks5WDyMD32SEQ/s1365/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1365" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEl5LDRzbmo1Ezq09PsSEwUpSLCqkse-0Glm-cVrG_LRKxUWRftnmb8ng-H0I_jWd9ebDCxz-7bVcwgkrhfTaAQ_1dQB_mGafVNy2CZdK_zfdzQLxceb14Q-F21u-TwQYVK0KFVFAjZXJDThH6f_EnJnMB6IavFjjREaDL7amw6ev-JDks5WDyMD32SEQ/w640-h360/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZqqgqICINw1enJN5TQEJ3USHbbyzZHEfYcFettY8BnxYNO2DBT-leRcLwj8sjFPsu4v1Um9I7oinfrpdyB9hT4hx4jrWBGtB3bxghml94RQGzrbpM_vpXiFsKQkQNh_Bwom-mGsWCgVOm-UOResxr8nrWVHcfWHspzTn3NkkHV0n04TkJLmp6-eu12yA/s1365/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1365" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZqqgqICINw1enJN5TQEJ3USHbbyzZHEfYcFettY8BnxYNO2DBT-leRcLwj8sjFPsu4v1Um9I7oinfrpdyB9hT4hx4jrWBGtB3bxghml94RQGzrbpM_vpXiFsKQkQNh_Bwom-mGsWCgVOm-UOResxr8nrWVHcfWHspzTn3NkkHV0n04TkJLmp6-eu12yA/w640-h360/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE_7NocIW5ZOmYrUDZ0OAflKfxXgwIvNi4cmZbZWkHE2k8fnCYhmrd0lbvxMhD9M9QBLfq3W5XZI6mVMNeSNai8ybNpXSFOLcwJbJ44czpXFVrdLrhMiL2PvQko5nT-UKgWaGPlptjW1AUdFp-CARhecq9iA_q9IgDkotCWHENFJ5cqgjSGMmXg1FEmxA/s1365/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1365" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE_7NocIW5ZOmYrUDZ0OAflKfxXgwIvNi4cmZbZWkHE2k8fnCYhmrd0lbvxMhD9M9QBLfq3W5XZI6mVMNeSNai8ybNpXSFOLcwJbJ44czpXFVrdLrhMiL2PvQko5nT-UKgWaGPlptjW1AUdFp-CARhecq9iA_q9IgDkotCWHENFJ5cqgjSGMmXg1FEmxA/w640-h360/Baker%20Street%20Elementary%20204.4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div></div></div><div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"><i>Baker Street Elementary</i></b><span face="" style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;"> follows the original adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, as they and their friends work through the issues of elementary school in Victorian London. Some consider puns to be the lowest form of humor. We disagree; we can find many other forms of humor that are low. (Many happen daily in our household that includes two teenage boys.)</div><div><br /></div><div>When you consider it, a pun – also known as paronomasia, a form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term, or of similar-sounding words – is a high form of humor, as it requires not only an understanding of the English language, but also a quick wit when sparring with other punsters in real-time.</div><div><br /></div><div>We've run across a number of Sherlockians who enjoy <strike>torturing</strike> entertaining others with their puns. The sport seems to have two elements: self-satisfaction in being so deft with words, and the pain inflicted on unsuspecting and unwilling participants.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is even a level of competition, as punsters try to one-up each others. He (and it's typically a boy) has an oversized sense of humor, and knows how to employ it to the amusement of his classmates and the annoyance of his teacher.<br /> <br /> Humor is a tough thing for anyone in front of a group. It's hit or miss. In many ways, it's like being an acrobat. When you see an opportunity, you go for it, hoping you don't slip and fall. Especially when there's no net.<br /> <br /> Sherlock Holmes did make a few attempts at humor – in some cases with more snark and insult ("The Three Gables," anyone?) – but knew enough to stay away for the most part. But he did know a thing or two about <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYP1OBZfFK0" target="_blank">Niagara Falls</a>.<br /> <br /> In <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Watson read from "The Book of Life":<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “From a drop of water,” said the writer, “a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other. So all life is a great chain, the nature of which is known whenever we are shown a single link of it."</blockquote> </div> <div style="text-align: left;"> He quickly discovered that it was Sherlock Holmes himself who had written that article. While it may have seemed fanciful, it was quite obvious that a drop of water had an origin somewhere else, and likely had friends with which it congregated. And to Holmes, foreseeing a Niagara Falls was a simple logical inference.</div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> And if you've got such a natural wonder as Niagara Falls, why not make use of it? So thought Jean François Gravelet, otherwise known as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Blondin" target="_blank">Charles Blondin</a>. Blondin first crossed the Niagara on tightrope on June 30, 1859, and made a name for himself. You can read about his life and other exploits in that link above, including an instance in which a tightrope crossing gone wrong cost two men their lives.</div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> But Holmes fancied himself a Blondin (which by that time had become a generic name for anyone in the tightrope-walking profession) in <i>The Sign of Four</i>: "Now run down-stairs, loose the dog, and look out for Blondin."</div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> You see, at that moment, Sherlock Holmes was planning to walk the roofline of Pondicherry Lodge.</div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /> But back at Baker Street Elementary, young Master Sherlock finds himself walking a very different tightrope altogether...<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNn14j2XaHwJRgge_QWcUroqlbmPrEawEQ5EDzzLFjytRu9OvIhIH-dwsy6YCU9m43iQ6YTTdYgDnY_KpbuJRt1bym4oH6bc_mw660_NWlJlI0JSa7GBu2lGeZ5B2ocUkSq5gykEbEVTPS/s1600/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="768" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNn14j2XaHwJRgge_QWcUroqlbmPrEawEQ5EDzzLFjytRu9OvIhIH-dwsy6YCU9m43iQ6YTTdYgDnY_KpbuJRt1bym4oH6bc_mw660_NWlJlI0JSa7GBu2lGeZ5B2ocUkSq5gykEbEVTPS/s640/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicxlEzgRCok9MzEJiSoZyBCg8nsKjk5EB8kYxG2qL-5a7W-wx0NGQTaId_SZbpGPpiKCuFwjw0pWu27NI61sgBoF8y5TLKemPjcW32hElkI8C5GmzG96bLNnFCk61Rd4wkGOC_aF6CydDn/s1600/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="768" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicxlEzgRCok9MzEJiSoZyBCg8nsKjk5EB8kYxG2qL-5a7W-wx0NGQTaId_SZbpGPpiKCuFwjw0pWu27NI61sgBoF8y5TLKemPjcW32hElkI8C5GmzG96bLNnFCk61Rd4wkGOC_aF6CydDn/s640/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjluFklI3jyqKP5EL1hDbaLYQiHm0OzmYg2eKLQ6xYijRRtjXHwNkOxtXgs_c5iaPLKoO0eb5a5BEAKrYRyYR7Q268e6A6kRgFP1bjmvekmNbubs2sq9Eobw59ymxYHY9wzMRyrOKWMOJcw/s1600/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="768" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjluFklI3jyqKP5EL1hDbaLYQiHm0OzmYg2eKLQ6xYijRRtjXHwNkOxtXgs_c5iaPLKoO0eb5a5BEAKrYRyYR7Q268e6A6kRgFP1bjmvekmNbubs2sq9Eobw59ymxYHY9wzMRyrOKWMOJcw/s640/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg3PjpbjgYQa3iznw2w1YhlLtxJQ_d55UABO2_0CsY6uYUdwPpnpo_Gn66FwwhF8pgSAJIYLeo0qlghu0DWZw9DexoWkY0SSTXlBbrP68JGFlK6o2mJF_jJxCUhGR27MV37wZVeqMXOdVQ/s1600/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="768" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg3PjpbjgYQa3iznw2w1YhlLtxJQ_d55UABO2_0CsY6uYUdwPpnpo_Gn66FwwhF8pgSAJIYLeo0qlghu0DWZw9DexoWkY0SSTXlBbrP68JGFlK6o2mJF_jJxCUhGR27MV37wZVeqMXOdVQ/s640/Baker+Street+Elementary+38.4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> </div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <b style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><i>Baker Street Elementary</i></b><span style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> follows the original adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, as they and their friends work through the issues of elementary school in Victorian London. Fortunately, we're more of the formal types.<br /> <br /> And so are our guests!<br /> <br /> Three – count 'em, three – guests join us this time around. They are Curtis Armstrong, Elliot Milstein, and Ashley Polasek, and they are the two authors and editor of <b><i>A Plum Assignment: Discourses on P.G. Wodehouse and His World</i></b>. They are Wodehouse experts who also happen to (mostly) have more than a passing familiarity with Sherlock Holmes.<br /> <br /> We spend some time with them looking at the intersection of Plum and Conan Doyle's works, and also look at why Wodehouse was so universally enjoyable and why we keep returning to his stories again and again. And how Sherlockians and Wodehousians are remarkably similar in their interactions. The book itself has a survey of opening lines from Wodehouse works, where you'll find such gems as:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> I reached out a hand from under the blankets and rang the bell for Jeeves.<br /> "Good evening, Jeeves."<br /> "Good morning, sir."</blockquote> <br /> <br /> And don't forget to try your hand at the latest <b>Canonical Couplet</b> and win a prize – now you don't need to be a<b><i> </i></b><a href="http://ihose.co/ihosepatron" style="font-weight: bold;">Patron of the Arts</a> <i>– </i><b style="font-style: italic;">every </b>listener is eligible to participate!<br /> <br /> <div> <div> Information on sponsors, links, and notes available below.</div> <br /> <div style="orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-indent: 0px; widows: 2;"> <div style="text-align: center;"> <div style="margin: 0px;"> <br /></div> </div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <div style="margin: 0px;">  <a href="http://ihose.co/ihosepatron" target="_blank"><img height="40" src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/widget-images/become-patron-widget-medium%402x.png" style="color: #0000ee; cursor: move;" width="204" /></a></div> </div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <div style="margin: 0px;"> <br /></div> </div> <br /> <br /> Please do consider becoming a <a href="http://ihose.co/ihosepatron">Patron of the Arts</a>.
