Throughout the course of his adult life, Sherlock Holmes must have had dental problems.<br />
<br />
We're aware of the complaints he mentioned, such as getting his canine knocked out by Matthews, in the waiting room of Charing Cross Station [EMPT]. And how he would have been well-advised to take protective precautions for his teeth when he boxed against McMurdo [SIGN].<br />
<br />
Any serious dental work on Sherlock Holmes must have been easily hidden. After all, it was Arthur Pinner's gold-stuffed tooth that gave him away [STOC]. Surely Holmes's many disguises would have required inconspicuous dental work so as to keep his identity a secret.<br />
<br />
More observations like this are available in a letter from from Charles S. Wilson, D.D.S. to Charles Goodman, D.D.S. under the title "The Dental Holmes" from <i>Profile By Gaslight</i>.<br />

The name Wah Wah Watson may be familiar to music fans around the world, but to Sherlockians, his name may be a bit more obscure. But his music style was ubiquitous.<br />
<br />
Born Melvin Ragin, he became known as Wah Wah Watson after his extensive use of the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html" target="_blank">wah-wah pedal</a> that he used for his guitar which he played with dozens of bands and lead singers such as The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and more.<br />

<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fobituaries&action=click&contentCollection=obituaries&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=6&pgtype=sectionfront" target="_blank">Mr. Ragin passed away</a> last week at the age of 67.<br />
<br />
The wah-wah effect originated in the 1920s when musicians moved mutes in and out of their trumpet and trombone bells. We're sure you've <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msh45Mruxbo" target="_blank">seen this in action</a>.<br />
<br />
Ragin used the effect on his guitar and it created a signature tune throughout the late 60s and 70s.<br />

<b>The Sherlock Holmes Connection</b></h2>
The reason we're mentioning Wah Wah Watson here isn't only because of his name. In 1976, he released his own album titled <i>Elementary</i>, featuring Watson on the cover wearing a deerstalker and with a meerschaum pipe.<br />
<br />
This would have been at the height of Sherlock Holmes fervor that was spurred on by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85" target="_blank">Nicholas Meyer, BSI</a> ("A Fine Morocco Case") and his book and film <i>The Seven Per-Cent Solution</i>. Without a doubt, one of the greatest Sherlock Holmes scholars of our time is Les Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"). Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, he updated and expanded the landmark <i>Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i> by William S. Baring-Gould, BSI ("The <i>Gloria Scott</i>"). His work took on two forms: The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, published by W.W. Norton, and The Sherlock Holmes Reference Library, published by Wessex Press.</div>

The first appearance of Sherlock Holmes was in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, which appeared in <i>Beeton's Christmas Annual </i>of 1887, which the <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/beetons-christmas-annual.htm#Antique"><i>Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide</i></a> called "the most expensive magazine in the world."<br />

There were 33 known copies in existence, which Randall Stock, BSI ("South African Securities") lists on his Best of Sherlock website under <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/beetons-christmas-annual.htm">Beeton's Christmas Annual 1887: An Annotated Checklist and Census</a>.<br />
<br />
However, an entry on Peter L. Stern's page on AbeBooks.com recently turned up a <b>34th</b> copy of the Beeton's, <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=22894373890&searchurl=bi%3D0%26ds%3D30%26sortby%3D17%26tn%3Dbeeton%2527s%26vci%3D38038&cm_sp=snippet-_-srp1-_-title1">listed for $75,000</a>. The description is as follows:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
First Edition; with the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. Bound without wrappers or advertisements in contemporary paper-covered boards (very lightly rubbed) with a cloth spine titled 'A Study in Scarlet.' The text is unusually fresh. In a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. With four illustrations by D.H. Friston, two of which feature the earliest depiction of Holmes, not yet characterized by the indelible image by Paget the public has held since 1891. Most copies known lack all or part of the wrappers and ads, as the present copy does. We are aware of only two complete copies sold in the last thrity-five years or more. By now, the story of Doyle's misfortune in publishing this story is well-known; he sold the entire copyright for £25. The Annual sold out quickly, as did the 1888 book edition. The following decades saw hundreds of editions, most of them piracies. While Doyle reaped little benefit from this novel, he didn't make the same mistake twice. So far as its historical importance goes, it's all been said before. Suffice it for us to add that in the field of detective fiction (or, perhaps, for popular fiction in general), A Study in Scarlet was the equivalent of the invention of the electric light bulb. The last copy that sold as bound without wrappers or advertisements was sold at Bonhams Oxford for $36,500. There's no indication that the copy above is that same copy.<br />

So, scrape together the funds, take out a second mortgage, drain the retirement savings. It's very rare that a Beeton's comes on the market.<br />

A Familiar Brand — Inspired by Sherlock Holmes?

We've previously written about <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/03/the-downside-to-having-sherlock-holmes.html#.W8AkX2hKjb0" target="_blank">the curse of being a Sherlockian</a>. You do indeed hear of Sherlock everywhere when you've become intimately familiar with the Canon.<br />
<br />
When we travel (and that's more often than we care to admit), we're very appreciative of high quality hotel bathroom amenities — that is: soaps, shampoos, and the like. And one of our favorite brands is <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/" target="_blank">Gilchrist & Soames</a>. Its very name and branding make it occupy the same space in our mind as <a href="http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/" target="_blank">Crabtree and Evelyn</a>.<br />
<br />
Both have an air of English heritage about them: the name, the packaging, the stores, and the steeped-in-tradition Victorian/Edwardian inferences; they're "<a href="https://www.cosmeticsbusiness.com/technical/article_page/Crabtree__Evelyn__British_Royalty/49110" target="_blank">quintessentially British</a>." [This is despite the fact that Crabtree and Evelyn began as The Soapbox in the 1970s in another Cambridge: Cambridge, Massachusetts.]<br />
<br />
But Gilchrist & Soames is a little more authentic, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilchrist_%26_Soames#History_and_corporate_ownership" target="_blank">tracing its roots</a> to London (also in the mid-1970s). The name, the logo that bears a passing resemblance to a <a href="https://www.royalwarrant.org/" target="_blank">Royal Warrant</a>, and various lines of amenities (<a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/english-spa.html" target="_blank">English Spa</a>, <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/english-garden.html" target="_blank">English Garden</a>, <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/london-collection.html" target="_blank">London Collection</a>) all point to this place of origin, even though the company is headquartered in Plainfield, Indiana.<br />
<br />
But is there more to the story? We think we've found the answer.<br />

<b>"the nervous tutor, the careless servant, and the three enterprising students" [3STU]</b></h3>
"<a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/The_Adventure_of_the_Three_Students" target="_blank">The Adventure of the Three Students</a>" is a story that is particularly dear to us. First published in June of 1904, it took place "In the year '95," making it one of those iconic stories that cemented the time and place of Sherlock Holmes as "always 1895."<br />
<br />
The manuscript of this story is owned by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose77" target="_blank">The Speckled Band of Boston</a>, a group which we've been a member of since 1992, and we've had the opportunity to see it in person at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. It doesn't hurt that we spent countless hours listening to the <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/08/remembering-robert-hardy.html#.W8ArmGhKjb0" target="_blank">Robert Hardy</a>-narrated version and the BBC Radio version written by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose69" target="_blank">Bert Coules</a>.<br />

With such familiarity, it's no surprise that we should recognize names and places in our travels. As a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you're way ahead of us on this one, but we'll be explicit. Holmes and Watson were visiting "one of our great University towns" (we can debate the merits of Oxford versus Cambridge another time), residing "in furnished lodgings close to the library," when Watson tells us:<br />

"Here it was that one evening we received a visit from an acquaintance, <b>Mr. Hilton Soames</b>, tutor and lecturer at the College of St. Luke’s."</blockquote>
Hmm. "Soames," you say? A rather unusual name. But not so unusual; Conan Doyle used it in the in "The Adventure of the Priory School" in January 1904:<br />

"The Priory is, without exception, the best and most select preparatory school in England. Lord Leverstoke, the Earl of Blackwater, <b>Sir Cathcart Soames</b>—they all have entrusted their sons to me."</blockquote>
So far, so good.<br />
<br />
But then we come across the three students for which the story is named: Miles McLaren, Doulat Ras, and <b>Gilchrist</b>.<br />

That's right. The student is <b>Gilchrist</b> and the tutor is <b>Soames</b>. Based in England, where our eponymous amenities supplier was founded.<br />

Is it possible that Anthony and Michael Karger, the original founders of Gilchrist & Soames, were closet Sherlockians? Or perhaps they were influenced by the stories at some point in their lives, and this was a nod — subtle or otherwise — to a classic English tale and classic English names?<br />
<br />
It's certainly possible. Is it probable? Well, Holmes himself said,<br />

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."</blockquote>
We think it's quite probable that the brand Gilchrist & Soames was inspired by the Sherlock Holmes stories. We're delighted to think that two of our favorites are intertwined.<br />

To the external world, Sherlockians must seem like a strange bunch. We get together, often multiple times a year, in venues to eat, drink and listen to talks about a figure who dates from the 1880s.<br />
<br />
Some take part in Victorian cosplay, others argue that Sherlock Holmes was fictional (can you <i>imagine</i>?), and many debate over who was the best impersonator of Holmes on stage or screen.<br />
<br />
This weekend marked the highly anticipated <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose145" target="_blank">From Gillette to Brett V</a> conference in Bloomington, Indiana, where 140 Sherlockians gathered to celebrate multiple iterations of Sherlock Holmes over the years. Peter Cushing, Basil Rathbone, Arthur Wontner, Jeremy Brett, Jonny Lee Miller, and even Michael Caine were part of the program.<br />
<br />
In one recorded interview with Jeremy Brett, he showed his appreciation for the admiration he received, but was very quick to point out that he would be supplanted by someone else as the next generation found its ideal Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
This is of course nothing new to those who have followed great works of literature whose main characters have been reinvented, recreated, and resurrected for generation after generation. In fact, the boys at Baker Street Elementary may be learning about one of those authors...</div>

It's always fun to take a Sherlockian field trip. The British are fortunate in that they can hop on a train or in a car and find themselves at some of the original locations that inspired places in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Or certainly to Ground Zero: the rooms at 221B Baker Street in London.<br />

In the U.S., it's not always quite so easy (even though <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/other-bsi-events/" target="_blank">the Baker Street Irregulars have hosted excursions</a> in Salt Lake City, the Vermissa Valley, and elsewhere). Which is why it's a pleasure to be able to step back in time and through the doors of 221B Baker Street in the home of Denny Dobry, BSI ("A Single Large Airy Sitting-Room") in Reading, Pennsylvania.<br />

We recently welcomed <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose152" target="_blank">Lee Eric Shackleford</a> to the show to discuss his play <i>Holmes and Watson</i>. It was a deep discussion, rooted in the psychology behind a decades-long friendship and supposing what the main characters' reactions would have been behind the scenes, so to speak.<br />

Like <i>Without a Clue</i> before it, Holmes and Watson is a farcical approach to the time-honored friends and colleagues. But rather than a simple switched identity, this time it's slapstick, potty humor, and frat boy antics.<br />

And as you can imagine, Traditional Sherlockians are outraged.<br />

How dare Sony Pictures tarnish the name an honor of the greatest detective who (n)ever lived, and his stalwart companion?<br />
<br />
They have a right to be upset. Just like some Sherlockians object to Benedict Cumberbatch or Jonny Lee Miller. Or Jeremy Brett before them. Or Basil Rathbone before many others. <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose106" target="_blank">Every generation has its Sherlock Holmes</a>. And every generation disagrees with how Sherlock Holmes is portrayed.<br />
<br />
But who said that we have to take Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson seriously all the time?<br />
<br />
Indeed, there are a number of instances of humorous takes on Sherlock Holmes from throughout the history of the Sherlockian world.<br />
<br />
In <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Pictorial-History-Sherlock-Holmes/dp/B000KFWY5Y" target="_blank">The Pictorial History of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, Michael Pointer wrote:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The massive testimony to the widespread knowledge and popularity of Sherlock Holmes is found not only in the repeated publications of the stories and all of the dramatizations and discussions of the same, but also, and especially, in the countless occasions when he has been used for comic purposes."</blockquote>
It starts as far back as 1893 with a comic strip called <i>The Adventures of Chubb-Lock Homes</i> and a stage parody called <i>Under the Clock</i>.<br />

The succession of comedic movies about Sherlock Holmes is quick in the early days of film (we won't bore you with all of the titles, but suffice it to say Mack Sennett of 'Keystone Kops' fame was involved).<br />
<br />
Into the 1940s, we had regular comic relief in the form of Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, who did so much damage to the reputation of the good doctor's intellect that to this day there are still people who view Watson as the <i>Boobus Britannicus</i>.<br />
<br />
George C. Scott played a rich lawyer who has a breakdown and believes that he is Sherlock Holmes in the 1971 film <i>They Might Be Giants</i>. <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/08/remembering-gene-wilder.html" target="_blank">Gene Wilder</a> tried his hand at <i>The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes's Younger Brother</i>, with <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/03/remembering-douglas-wilmer-bsi.html#.W67se2hKjb1" target="_blank">Douglas Wilmer</a> reprising his role as Sherlock Holmes, with Thorley Walters as his Watson.<br />

Neil Simon's 1976 film <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074937/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1" target="_blank">Murder By Death</a></i> was a spoof of many characters in detective fiction, and in an early version, Holmes and Watson made an appearance. On television that same year, we saw Richard B. Schull, BSI ("A Fine Actor") and John Schuck as <i>Holmes and Yo-Yo</i>, an ABC network comedy about a traditional police detective and his partner who happened to be an android. And not to be outdone, NBC had <i>The Return of the World's Greatest Detective</i>, with Larry Hagman as motorcycle cop Sherman Holmes, whose bike falls on him and causes him to believe he's Sherlock Holmes (aka <i>They Might Be Giants</i> for television).<br />
<br />
John Cleese came along in 1977 with <i>The Strange Case of the End of Civilisation as We Know It</i>, followed by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>. The less said about each, the better.<br />
<br />
We've survived the casting of Sherlock Holmes as <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/07/thirty-years-of-great-mouse-detective.html#.W67_72hKjb0" target="_blank">a mouse</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/04/the-first-appearance-of-sherlock-holmes.html" target="_blank">a muppet</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/03/the-earliest-sherlock-holmes-star-trek.html" target="_blank">a futuristic space traveler</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/09/sherlock-holmes-in-23rd-century.html#.W67_lGhKjb0" target="_blank">a time traveler</a>, <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose25" target="_blank">a singing detective</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/02/the-great-detective-pikachu-evolution.html" target="_blank">Pikachu</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/11/sherlock-gnomes-first-look.html" target="_blank">a garden gnome</a>, and a <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/12/arrived-upon-christmas-morning-blue_25.html#at_pco=smlwn-1.0&at_si=5baefee088c36ae8&at_ab=per-2&at_pos=0&at_tot=1" target="_blank">GIF</a>.<br />
<br />
And we're supposed to have the vapors simply because Will Ferrell is involved now?<br />
<br />
Puh-lease.<br />
<br />
No, this certainly won't be a version of Sherlock Holmes that appeals to everyone. But to throw so much cold water on it as if to say it's a version that won't appeal to <b><i>anyone</i></b> is, to us at least, the antithesis of the Sherlockian world, as we've come to know and appreciate.<br />
<br />
The more Sherlocks, the merrier, we say.<br />
<br />
Some seem to think that the more merrier the Sherlocks, the more miserable Sherlockians will be.<br />
<br />

Who among us hasn't been tempted to short-cut assigned classroom reading with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CliffsNotes" target="_blank">CliffsNotes</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_Notes" target="_blank">York Notes</a>, in those pre-Internet days when Wikipedia wasn't readily available?<br />
<br />
Well, the more literary-inclined have not – a group to which Sherlockians generally tend to gravitate – but for the masses, let's agree they may have.<br />
<br />
We're reminded of Watson's recounting of his doings in Hereford with Sherlock Holmes in "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," whiling away his time while Holmes ran down a few clues:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I walked down to the station with them, and then wandered through the streets of the little town, finally returning to the hotel, where I lay upon the sofa and tried to interest myself in a yellow-backed novel."</blockquote>
A yellow-backed novel? Was Watson perusing an early version of CliffsNotes? Hardly.<br />
<br />
Yellow-backed novels were cheap (sixpenny or shilling) editions of a book with illustrated covers of glazed and vividly illustrated yellow boards, intended for railway travellers. According to a note in The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes by Leslie S. Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"),<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Also known as 'sensation novels,' books of this genre revelled in stories of adultery, bigamy, murder, and illegitimacy. For example, in Mary Elizabeth (M.E.) Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret (1862), the heroine abandons her child, murders her husband, and considers poisoning her second husband...Sensation novels were in many ways precursors to thriller and even detective fiction."</blockquote>
In <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> (<i>The Oxford Sherlock Holmes</i> edition), edited by Richard Lancelyn Green, BSI ("The Three Gables"), the note explains:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The first 'yellowbacks' were published in 1847 by Simms and McIntyre, and other publishers quickly followed suit, such as Routeledge, Chapman & Hall, Frederick Warne, Maxwell, Chatto & Windus, and Ward, Lock, & Co. ACD's work twice appeared in this format: the reissue of the anthology <i>Strange Secrets</i>, issued by Chatto & Windus in 1890, and <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> issued by Lever Brothers in 1894. The yellowback was superseded by the sixpenny paperback novel at the end of the century."</blockquote>
So it stands to reason that Watson, a railway traveller to Hereford, would have a yellow-back novel in his possession. Interesting too that the plot of "The Boscombe Valley Mystery" involved what seemed to be patricide.<br />
<br />
Watson himself acknowledges that the publication held no interest for him:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The puny plot of the story was so thin, however, when compared to the deep mystery through which we were groping, and I found my attention wander so continually from the fiction to the fact, that I at last flung it across the room and gave myself up entirely to a consideration of events of the day."</blockquote>
<br />
Sounds much like a quote often <a href="https://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/03/26/great-force/" target="_blank">erroneously attributed to Dorothy Parker</a>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."</blockquote>
Which sounds suspiciously like the force of the teacher's head at Baker Street Elementary...<br />
