When <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose99">Chris Redmond</a> decided to give up <a href="http://sherlockian.net/">Sherlockian.net</a> after 22 years, there was great uncertainty about its future. Would it be abandoned, archived, deleted or sustained? And who would handle any of the monumental work of modernizing the site that had its humble beginnings in 1994?<br />
<br />
Enter Liza Potts, an associate professor at Michigan State University. Potts runs the <a href="http://wide.cal.msu.edu/research/">WIDE Research Center</a> (Writing, Information and Design Experience) there and just so happened to like Sherlock Holmes. But she had no idea what was in store for her.<br />
<br />
With a handful of students and a select advisory board of Sherlockians, Prof. Potts set out to wrangle some 3,000 links and hundreds of pages, giving them the modern treatment. But as with all technical projects, there are human elements and stories galore that make this a fascinating adventure.<br />

Over the years I've proudly said that I was a full-fledged canine member of one of the noblest and oldest Sherlockian societies — not through any merits of my own, I hasten to add, but because of the leadership's hospitality and courtesy. But I now have reason to think that I've been inflating my credentials all these years.<br />
<br />
The story starts in 1981, when I was was already a long-time Sherlockian but not a particularly well-known one. I'd been part of the youth movement in the 1960s, a <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregular</a> since 1966, a <a href="http://torontobootmakers.com/">Bootmaker of Toronto</a> since the society was founded in 1972, and since 1979 the co-editor of the Bootmakers' magazine <i>Canadian Holmes</i>. But I didn't do much Sherlockian travelling, and of course I didn't have the continent-wide network of Sherlockian friends that the internet has now made possible.<br />
<br />
So it was kind of a big deal when I was planning a business trip to Chicago (those were the days, when my employer could afford to send me places), got in touch with somebody or other about maybe having lunch with a couple of local Sherlockians while I was there, and was pleased and intimidated to find that my visit coincided with the annual dinner of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/">The Hounds of the Baskerville [sic]</a>. Would I like to attend the event as a guest? Duh; yes I would.<br />
<br />
And I did, on October 5, 1981, at a place on North Wells Street called <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">That Steak Joynt</a> (which itself has a rather <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">mysterious history</a>). Under the leadership of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Mangler"><b>Bob Mangler</b></a>, Master of the Hounds for some forty years, the program included such things as the Hounds customarily do, and a showing of the half-hour "Silver Blaze" starring Canadian actor <b>Christopher Plummer</b>. I remember very little about the evening, to tell the truth, apart from a conversation with a young woman at my table who wanted to tell me about the limitations on women's involvement in Sherlockian matters in Chicago, a topic that I understand has not yet been exhausted 36 years later. (The Hounds didn't admit women members until a couple of decades after my visit, but women guests were welcome at its one meeting of the year. [<i>More on this in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose130">Episode 130</a> of <b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</b> - ed.</i>]) <br />

Much of what I know about the traditions of the Hounds, and indeed about the details of that 1981 dinner, is based on an admirable volume that has just been published, a "<b>75th Anniversary Edition</b>" history of the society, written half by <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Nieminski">John Nieminski</a></b> (taking the story up to 1983) and half by the present Master, <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Terras">Donald Terras</a></b>. Launched at the 2017 dinner a few weeks ago, a gala <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/10/episode-130-hounds-of-baskerville-sic.html">celebration of the society's dodranscentenary</a>, it tells the story in some detail from the society's 1943 founding by the great <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Vincent Starrett</a> up to the present day. I'm delighted to have acquired a copy of the book, and to find my name on page 59, which confirms my presence at the 1981 dinner and alleges, all too plausibly, that I made myself conspicuous by distributing copies of my little journal, <i>Canadian Holmes</i>, "left and right."<br />

Now here's the thing. I came home from Chicago with a pewter Hounds pin (which I still wear occasionally at Sherlockian events) and the distinct impression that the Master of the Hounds had awarded me an "honorary membership" in the society. I reported briefly on my Houndship at the next meeting of the Bootmakers of Toronto, and was rewarded by a call from long-time Bootmaker (and Baker Street Irregular) David Skene-Melvin: "Now you are officially a son of a bitch!" <br />
<br />
But the aforesaid page 59 lists four people who were inducted into Hounds membership at the 1981 dinner, and none of them is me. The historian also refers to "certificates", and if my loot from that evening included a certificate of any kind, I certainly don't know where it is. From which I conclude that my "honorary" status didn't really make me a Hound, and that's a <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">trifle</a> embarrassing, since I have been claiming ever since that I was one.<br />
<br />
But who knows? Maybe some year soon, I'll get back to Chicago on the auspicious October night, and betake myself to the annual dinner of the Hounds, and we'll see if they let me in.<br />

In 1922, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself wrote a Sherlock Holmes parody. Until that time, he had suffered (gladly or not is open for debate) at the hands of parodists who created their own versions of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in stories, comics, plays and more.<br />
<br />
But Conan Doyle's short story "<a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/ref/watson-trick-manuscript.htm">How Watson Learned the Trick</a>" was a unique addition to the oeuvre in that it was created specifically for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Mary%27s_Dolls%27_House">Queen Mary's Dolls House</a> — a project that called for top artists and craftsmen to contribute to the building of and possessions within a doll house for Queen Mary, wife of George V. Conan Doyle wrote the 503-word story, taking up 34 pages, which was bound into a tiny volume for the bookshelf of the doll house, measuring 1.5 inches high by 1.25 inches wide.<br />
<br />
The "trick" Watson supposedly learned was Holmes's methods of observation and inference, which he put to work, only to have Holmes bat down his every assumption. The 75th anniversary of a Sherlockian organization is a fine time to reflect on its history. So we did just that with Don Terras, BSI ("The Politician, the Lighthouse, and the Trained Cormorant") from his unique perch near an actual lighthouse.<br />

The Hounds of the Baskerville (sic) has its roots in Chicago, thanks to one of the "Holy Three" of early Sherlockian giants, Vincent Starrett. There are about a score of other groups in and around Chicagoland, and Don takes us on a brief tour of them, as well as the storied history of the Hounds.<br />
<br />

Sherlockians have been writing a torrent of words for a century or more — "<a href="http://www.worlds-best-detective-crime-and-murder-mystery-books.com/1887.html">Never has so much been written by so many for so few</a>," said Christopher Morley — and many of their ideas, phrases and coinages are burned into my brain. Sometimes, however, they're burned just a little wrong. Here are two examples.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>"The whole bed of the ocean" [DYIN]</b></h3>
There's an unsurprising tendency for Sherlockians to write about the things they themselves are interested in, no matter how unrelated to Sherlock Holmes. For years I've been telling people that there was an article somewhere, decades past, making fun of that tendency and citing the likelihood that somebody who loves deep-sea diving will ransack the Canon for proof that Mr. Holmes, too, would don diving gear and descend into the depths of the ocean.<br />
<br />
But I could never get back to that reference. Even the editor of the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/"><i>Baker Street Journal</i></a>, where I was pretty sure I had seen the passage, couldn't find it, and he is more adept than I am at searching the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/ebooks/ebsj.html">electronic edition of the BSJ</a>. (I begin to think that everybody is more adept than I am at searching the eBSJ, actually.)<br />
<br />
Well, I stumbled onto the original recently, and it turns out that nobody could find it because I was misremembering it. The key word isn't "diving," it's "fishing". The source is a letter to the editor of the BSJ from <b>Howard Brody</b>, published in 1981, who describes what he calls "the Egotistical methodology" of Sherlockian scholarship:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I (the author of this hypothetical piece) am very interested in deep-sea fishing. I am very fond of myself and think of myself as a very sagacious and perceptive individual. I am very fond of Sherlock Holmes and think of him as a very sagacious and perceptive individual. Therefore, Sherlock Holmes must have been very interested in deep-sea fishing. Furthermore, by various mental gymnastics, I can locate a passage in the Canon to support this idea." </blockquote>
He cites "A Scandal in Bohemia," where we learn that Holmes had in his index the biography of "a staff-commander who had written a monograph upon the deep sea fishes." Conclusion: "it is established as clear truth that Holmes spent every spare minute in deep-sea fishing."<br />
<h3>
<b>"What perverted love can bring about" [THOR]</b></h3>
My other memorable, but mis-remembered, passage was a letter to the editor complaining about references to sex. I couldn't find it in the <i>Baker Street Journal</i>, and the editor of the BSJ couldn't find it even with his electronic aids, for what turned out to be a simple reason: it didn't appear in the BSJ, but rather in the <i><a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/category/journal/">Sherlock Holmes Journal</a></i>, in 1979.<br />
<br />
Again, the source was a letter to the editor, this one complaining about an article on the subject of "Thor Bridge" that had appeared in the previous issue. J.B. Tatum wrote in part:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Should I wish to read about sexual perversion and penises there are many other readily available magazines to which I might subscribe. One reason that I enjoy Sherlock Holmes so much is that… the Canon is so utterly free of such modern filth."</blockquote>
<br />
It was 1979, remember, before explicit fanfic, before "consulting husbands," before <i>In Bed with Sherlock Holmes</i> — though not before Sam Rosenberg's <i>Naked Is the Best Disguise</i> or Larry Townsend's <i>The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, so Tatum was being a trifle selective.<br />
<br />
Still, his (her?) indignant protest is highly quotable, and next time I have occasion to refer to it, I'll try to get it right.<br />

Nobel Prize Winner Kazuo Ishiguro: Inspired by Sherlock Holmes

The English author <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazuo_Ishiguro">Kazuo Ishiguro</a> (<i>The Remains of the Day</i>, etc.) has been awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in literature. And there is, of course, a Sherlockian connection.<br />
<br />
<div>
Ishiguro was born 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan. Six years later, his family moved to Guildford in Surrey, England, when his father began research at the National Institute of Oceanography.<br />
<br />
<div>
It was in Surrey young Ishiguro first discovered Sherlock Holmes. Before he found the Holmes books in the local library he had, like so many other young boys, hardly been reading books at all.<br />
<br />
In a 2015 interview, Kazuo Ishiguro told a reporter from the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/08/books/review/kazuo-ishiguro-by-the-book.html"><i>New York Times</i></a>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I was around 9 or 10, and I not only read obsessively about Holmes and Watson, I started to behave like them. I’d go to school and say things like: 'Pray, be seated' or 'That is most singular.' People at the time just put this down to my being Japanese."</blockquote>
<br />
Soon after, he began writing his own stories. He had previously created a James Bond type of spy called Mr. Senior, but when he got into Sherlock Holmes in a big way, he started writing a pastiche of a Victorian detective story, beginning with a client arriving and telling a long story. He went to a primary school where they were experimenting with modern teaching methods and there were no defined lessons.<br />
<br />
In "<a href="https://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/5829/kazuo-ishiguro-the-art-of-fiction-no-196-kazuo-ishiguro">The Art of Fiction No. 196</a>" in the <i>Paris Review</i>, Ishiguro said:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"You wrote a bit, then you read each other's things, and you read out loud. […] But a lot of the energy went into decorating our books to look exactly like the paperbacks we saw in the shops, drawing bullet holes on the front and putting quotations from newspapers on the back."</blockquote>

This Sherlock Holmes-inspired primary school writing affected him as a writer later in life as well:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"It was good fun, and it made me think of stories as effortless things. I think that stayed with me. I've never been intimidated by the idea of having to make up a story. It's always been a relatively easy thing that people did in a relaxed environment."</blockquote>
<br />
Kazuo Ishiguro's favorite Sherlock Holmes story was – and still is – <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>. "It was scary and gave me sleepless nights, but I suspect I was drawn to Conan Doyle’s world because, paradoxically, it was so very cozy", he said in the <i>New York Times</i> interview.<br />
<br />
After his childhood Sherlock Holmes obsession, Kazuo Ishiguro stopped reading – he got interested in pop music instead – until his early twenties. His Holmes interest still exists, however, which he showed in a 2015 conversation with Neil Gaiman, published in the <a href="https://www.newstatesman.com/2015/05/neil-gaiman-kazuo-ishiguro-interview-literature-genre-machines-can-toil-they-can-t-imagine"><i>The New Statesman</i></a>. After some comments made by Gaiman regarding Sherlock Holmes and copyright, Ishiguro said:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Since Sherlock Holmes went out of copyright, certainly, he has started to mutate and evolve in a very energetic way. I don’t know if it would have been possible, for instance, to have the Cumberbatch modernised series, had it been under copyright. And Holmes is a very interesting example, I think, of a figure who’s mutated over the years and evolved."</blockquote>
<br />
Kazuo Ishiguro's interest in literary detectives can also be seen in his novel <i>When We Were Orphans </i>(2000), which introduces a famous detective called Christopher Banks, solving a mystery in Shanghai in the 1930s.<br />

Media and cultural pioneer Hugh Hefner <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/27/obituaries/hugh-hefner-dead.html?_r=0">has passed away</a> at the age of 91.<br />
<br />
Now, one might logically ask why I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is covering the passing of the founder of the <i>Playboy</i> media empire. As all things here, it leads back to Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
In the very first issue of Playboy magazine (December 1953), Hefner included "Introducing Mr. Sherlock Holmes," from <i>The Sign of Four, </i>with original illustrations from William J. Marsh. It was followed by "A Scandal in Bohemia" in Vol. 1 No. 2 (January 1954) and "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches" in Vol. 1 No. 3 (February 1954). In those early days Hefner could afford to publish only public-domain fiction.<br />
<br />
Over the years, <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose06">Peter Blau</a>, BSI ("Black Peter") has chronicled the various appearances of and connections to Sherlock Holmes in <i>Playboy</i>, making note of it in his monthly newsletter <a href="http://www.sherlocktron.com/scuttle.htm">Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press</a>.<br />
<br />
In the March 1999 Scuttlebutt, Peter tells us about another early staffer at the magazine who recently passed away:<br />

Horror and fantasy writer <b>Ray Russell</b> joined <i>Playboy </i>magazine as an associate editor in 1954, served as executive editor from 1955 to 1960, and continued as a contributing editor into the 1970s. His satirical pastiche "The Murder of Conan Doyle" (with Foames, Squatson, and Goryarty) appeared in <i>Playboy </i>in Apr. 1955.</blockquote>

And from the November 1995 Scuttlebutt, we learn of Kingsley Amis' contribution:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
In an essay on "My Favorite Sleuths" (<i>Playboy</i>, Dec. 1966) Kingsley Amis wrote that "Holmes is the memorable figure he is because Conan Doyle grasped the essential truth that the deductive solving of crimes cannot in itself throw much light on the character doing the solving, and therefore that character must be loaded up with quirks, hobbies, eccentricities. It is always these irrelevant qualities that define the figure of the great detective, not his mere powers of reasoning." </blockquote>

As we crept up to the 1970s, the Sherlock Holmes craze that had captured the public's attention with <i>The Seven Per-cent Solution</i> by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85">Nicholas Meyer</a>, BSI ("A Fine Morocco Case") was also evident. <i>Playboy </i>published an excerpt from Meyer's next novel <i>The West End Horro</i>r in the April 1976 issue.<br />

But one of the most noted Sherlockian connections in the magazine occurred just two months prior: the Canonically named <b>Laura Lyons</b> was <i>Playboy</i>'s "Miss February 1976." Laura Lyons was of course the typist who was acquainted with Sir Charles Baskerville in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>. But Hugh Hefner didn't have to do any sleight of hand with a pseudonymn; that was the model's real name.<br />
<br />
In Vol. 55 No. 2 of the <i><b>Baker Street Journal</b></i>, <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose31">Leslie Klinger</a>, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") wrote the article "<b>What Kind of Person Reads Playboy? Sherlock Holmes?</b>" in which he provided some background on the Holmes/<i>Playboy </i>connection before interviewing Hugh Hefner. His research unearthed an earlier <i>BSJ</i> article:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A closer tie between the Holmes brothers and <i>Playboy </i>was the subject of <b>John C. Hogan</b>’s June 1966 <i>Baker Street Journal</i> article “Sherlock Holmes—Was He a  Playboy’?” (Vol. 16, No. 2). The article was subsequently reprinted in <i>VIP: The Playboy Club Magazine </i>(Winter 1966, No. 12)."</blockquote>
And Klinger summed up other nods to Sherlock Holmes in <i>Playboy</i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Pastiches and parodies have debuted in <i>Playboy</i>. In 1975 the magazine revealed the hitherto-unknown <b>Sherlock Jones</b> and his companion <b>Dr. Datson</b>, in “The Adventures of Sherlock Jones” by Sol Weinstein and Howard Albrecht. In 1976, <b>Nicholas Meyer</b>’s <i>West End Horror</i> appeared (in slightly abridged form) in the April and May issues. <b>Kingsley Amis</b>’s affinity for Holmes was further demonstrated in May 1978, with publication of  “The Darkwater Hall Mystery,” a fine pastiche.</blockquote>

"Perhaps most noteworthy is the multitude of cartoons by such renowned cartoonists as <b>Roy Raymonde</b>, <b>Francis Smith</b> (“Smilby”), <b>Mike Williams</b>, and of course <b>Gahan Wilson</b>."</blockquote>
But the real treat in the article is the conversation that Les had with Hugh Hefner. We learn about his earliest contact with Sherlock Holmes (at his public library) and the indelible mark that Basil Rathbone left on him. So much so that Hefner <a href="https://falconmovies.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/hugh-hefner-restores-sherlock-holmes-film-to-glory/">provided funding for the the restoration</a> of the <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose122">Rathbone and Bruce series</a> by the <b><a href="https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/">UCLA Film and Television Archive</a></b>.<br />

Canonical Connections in Conan Doyle's "Our Midnight Visitor"

“The Adventure of the Five Orange Pips” gives some of those tantalizing untold tales with which Watson loved to tease his readers:<br />

“the adventure of the Paradol Chamber, of the Amateur Mendicant Society, who held a luxurious club in the lower vault of a furniture warehouse, of the facts connected with the loss of the British barque Sophy Anderson, of the singular adventures of the Grice Patersons in the island of Uffa, and finally of the Camberwell poisoning case.” </blockquote>

The latitude and longitude of the island of Uffa has long puzzled Sherlockian scholars because it exists in no atlas. Robert A. Moss, in his article "In the Island of Uffa" (<i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, Vol 63, No 4, Winter 2013), lists some of the candidates to its possible location. Jay Finley Christ suggested—and Moss concurs—it was a portmanteau disguise by Watson of the islands of Ulva and Staffa in the Hebrides archipelago off the Scottish west coast. Julian Wolff, in his <i>The Sherlockian Atlas</i>, located it as Ufa in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Islands">Solomon Islands</a>.  <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Rolfe Boswell suggested that Uffa was a large mound constructed by King Uffa of East Anglia, circa 580 C.E. Darrell Schweitzer located it in the fen country of eastern England, where lakes and isles abounded before the fens were drained in the 1600s, leaving behind a great mound that was once the island of Uffa."</blockquote>

August Derleth had Solar Pons and Dr. Parker solving the curse of the Grice Patersons east of the Isles of Scilly, off Cornwall. John Linsenmeyer in the Spring 2017 <a href="http://www.torontobootmakers.com/canadian-holmes/"><i>Canadian Holmes</i></a> (Vol 40, No 2) posits that Uffa is really the city of Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. </div>

They were all looking in the wrong place. They needed to check the <i>Temple Bar</i>. </div>

<h3>
<b>"Near the right temple?" [THOR]</b></h3>
<i>Temple Bar</i> was one of the leading literary magazines of the day and in the February 1891 issue appeared “Our Midnight Visitor,” the third and final story of Arthur Conan Doyle's that the magazine published. It is a very long short story, about 9,300 words, set on the fictional island of Uffa, two and a half miles off the western coast of Arran, although from the geography mentioned in the story, Doyle clearly meant the southern coast, about where the red x is on the map.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Arran">Arran</a> is an island roughly twenty miles long by ten miles wide in the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland. In August or September 1877, Doyle and his sisters Lottie and Connie took a walking tour of the island. According to Andrew Lycett in <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Created-Sherlock-Holmes/dp/074327525X">The Man Who Created Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, </div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Bounding over the craggy landscape that had inspired Walter Scott’s epic poem <i>The Lord of the Isles</i>, his [Doyle’s] imagination was fired by the Gothic potential of the misty west coast which he would later summon up in stories such as ‘The Mystery of Cloomber.’ His taste for travel and adventure was also sparked by the sight of colossal ocean liners making their stately progress through the waves between Arran and the Scottish mainland, en route to and from Glasgow. The young medical student was beginning to store up meaningful memories of his own.”</blockquote>

“Our Midnight Visitor’ is a reminiscence of Archie McDonald:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"My father had been enabled to send me to begin the study of medicine at the University of Glasgow, and I had attended lectures there for two Winter sessions, but, whether from caprice or from some lessening in his funds, he had recalled me, and in the year 1865 I found myself cribbed up in this little island with just education enough to wish for more, and with no associate at home but the grim, stern old man, for my mother had been dead some years, and I had neither brother nor sister."</blockquote>
<br />
Thus, "just before the equinoctial gales in the Spring," the sudden appearance of a mysterious stranger sets events into motion. Doyle gave an appreciable amount of space in the story to the history and geography of Uffa; the three families of the island, the McDonalds of Carracuil, the Gibbs of Arden and the Fullartons of Corriemains; the Roost of Uffa, the channel between Uffa and Arran with at-times dangerous currents; Carravoe where the McDonalds anchor their fishing boat; the Combera cliffs, the trysting place of Archie and Minnie Fullarton; Beg-na-sacher and Beg-na-phail, two rugged knolls in the center of the island. </div>

It is not surprising when in May 1891 as Doyle came to write “The Five Orange Pips”, the island of Uffa was still fresh in his mind as a perfect setting for a “singular adventure” of Holmes and Watson he never intended to write.<br />
<h3>
<b><br /></b><b>"quite familiar to me" [FINA]</b></h3>
As there is a Doylean echo in “The Five Orange Pips” to a recently written Doyle story, there is a Canonical echo in “Our Midnight Visitor.” The visitor, Charles Digby, is a world traveler with scars on his body as souvenirs:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"This was a bullet," he said, pointing to a deep bluish pucker underneath his collar bone. "I got it behind the barricades in Berlin in eighteen hundred and forty-eight. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernhard_von_Langenbeck">Langenback</a> said it just missed the <b>subclavian artery</b>. And this," he went on, indicating a pair of curious elliptical scars upon his throat, "was a bite from a Sioux chief, when I was under <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Armstrong_Custer">Custer</a> on the plains —I've got an arrow wound on <b>my leg</b> from the same party. This is from a mutinous Lascar aboard ship, and the others are mere scratches—Californian vaccination marks. You can excuse my being a little ready with my own irons, though, when I've been dropped so often." [<i>Ed. note: emphasis ours</i>]</blockquote>

Subclavian artery wounds maybe more common than thought, although Digby could not have been “under Custer on the plains” as Custer went straight to the Civil War from West Point and he didn’t fight in the Indian Wars until 1866. As with "The <i>Gloria Scott</i>", Doyle seems to forget the story's internal chronology. It is a reminiscence of  Holmes's <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles37">college days</a> told to Watson at an unspecified later date, but presumably during 1881 to 1888, when Watson was a bachelor living with Holmes. Holmes' college days would have been in the 1870s. Yet when Judge Trevor's written confession to his son turns up, the events leading to the disappearance of the <i>Gloria Scott</i> are dated both as October 1855 and "thirty years ago". While the mid-1880s would be a fine date for Holmes to be relating the story to the doctor, it would not be for Holmes' university years. In the white heat of writing, such niceties as internal consistency were of less import to Doyle's popular works than dramatic impact.<br />
<br />
I also don't think Doyle was doing something meta by connecting the world of "Our Midnight Visitor" to the world of Sherlock Holmes any more than I think he was connecting Professor Challenger in 1912's <i>The Lost World</i> ("The only other evidence which I can adduce is from the log of the <i><b>SS Friesland</b></i>, a Dutch-American liner, which asserts that at nine next morning, <i>Start Poin</i>t being at the time ten miles upon their starboard quarter, they were passed by something between a flying goat and a monstrous bat, which was heading at a prodigious pace south and west.")  to 1903's "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" ("Our months of partnership had not been so uneventful as he had stated, for I find, on looking over my notes, that this period includes the case of the papers of ex-President Murillo, and also the shocking affair of the Dutch steamship <i><b>Friesland</b></i>, which so nearly cost us both our lives."). Doyle reused names often in his fiction and aside from the equinoctial gales with which "The Five Orange Pips" and "Our Midnight Visitor," stories Doyle wrote just months apart, open, the Uffa connection seems like an inside joke that he and only a few family members would get.<br />
<br />
I was not the first to uncover this link and I didn't think I would be. In my research for this post, I came across this from <i>The Sherlock Holmes Journal</i>, Vol 14 No 2 (Issue 53) Winter 1979, Editorial Notes:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b>Uffa Riddle Answered ?</b><br />
HERE is a truly scholarly discovery, one not previously made to our knowledge, for which congratulations are due to J. M. Gibson of Chi-Chester. Mr Gibson it was who came up with the Doyle-Ripper link in the last issue’s Notes: now it’s Uffa’s turn. I need hardly remind readers of the reference made by Watson in The Five Orange Pips -. . . the singular adventures of the Grice Patersons in the island of Uffa.” Where is that elusive island, though? The name has always sounded vaguely Gaelic to me, and many years ago Jay Finley Christ decided that a combination of the names Ulva and Staffa, off the west coast of Scotland, provided the key. I think we can now be certain, for there is corroboration in an almost unknown short story by Conan Doyle. Mr. Gibson has sent in a copy of a journal called <i>Temple Bar</i>: in its February 1891 issue there is a story by Doyle entitled “Our Midnight Visitor”, and the first sentence runs as follows: “On the western side of the island of Arran, seldom visited, and almost unknown to tourists, the little island named Uffa”. . . . There it is, settled! The story that follows is not especially distinguished, but when it appeared, Conan Doyle was only months away from seeing in print the first of his short stories where characterisation, atmosphere and creativity combined together to assure him immortality. A real find, Mr. Gibson, and we salute you!</blockquote>
<br />
Since that citation, the "Midnight Visitor" connection still seems to be as "almost unknown" as the story itself.<br />
<br />
The island of Uffa is sitting in <i>The Unknown Conan Doyle: Uncollected Stories</i> waiting to be explored. Pasticheurs will find a topography ready for them to use, others find a well-crafted and evocative story ("not especially distinguished" notwithstanding) by Doyle.<br />

Dr. Watson was once on the receiving end of a rebuke by Baron Adelbert Gruner in "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client," Gruner upbraided Watson (who was incognito as Dr. Hill Barton, avid collector of Chinese pottery). When he admitted that he had not read Gruner's definitive book on the subject, he hid behind his profession:</div>

Well, Greg Ruby has certainly found time for his passion. At some point, we've all experienced the humorless, information-rich decorations of a classroom. From the instructive white and green cursive alphabet to the classic "<a href="https://yalealumnimagazine.com/uploads/images/2800028/1337795174/dinos_fullpeabody.jpg" target="_blank">Age of Reptiles</a>" mural from the Yale University Peabody Museum of Natural History.<br />
<br />
But the grand-daddy of them all has to be the <a href="https://www.ptable.com/" target="_blank">Periodic Table of Elements</a>. That multi-column, multi-row chart with all of the known elements, grouped by metals / non-metals, then further by subcategories such as alkalais, noble gases, etc. For those of us who are not predisposed to appreciate the logical arrangement of the elements on the chart (or even the logic of their abbreviations), there's always Tom Lehrer's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFIvXVMbII0" target="_blank">The Element Song</a>" which sets the periodic table to the tune of "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General."<br />

With the ubiquity of laptops and various thin and portable black mirrors (aka phones and tablets), there's no longer a need to have a single place from which to write.<br />

But when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was writing Sherlock Holmes stories, he needed a place to place his paper as he ran the pen over it. There are many photographs of him at home in his study, where he authored so many of his works, from <i>The White Company</i> to "Lot 249," from "A Night Among the Nihilists" to <i>The Land of Mist</i>, and about recurring characters like Sherlock Holmes, Brigadier Gerard, and Professor Challenger.<br />
<br />
There are tales of Conan Doyle writing on the train, at sporting events, and in other unlikely places, as the muse struck him. And as his fame and fortune grew, he was able to afford a luxury from a specialty retailer that could support his need to write during his travels.<br />
<br />
It wasn't until 1925 that <a href="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/arthur-conan-doyle-desk-goyard-salon-art-design">Sir Arthur Conan Doyle commissioned a travel writing desk</a> from the legendary trunkmaker <a href="http://www.goyard.com/">Goyard</a>. The luxury brand has <a href="https://www.purseblog.com/goyard/goyard-handbags-history/">a fascinating history</a>, including their willingness to accept special orders. <br />

As the Industrial Age continued into the 20th century, international travel became more popular—particularly as immigration laws changed and the travel industry realized that tourism could be very profitable. And the luggage industry changed to support it.<br />
<br />
Until then, trunks were the mainstay of transporting belongings — some of them capable of containing seemingly an entire wardrobe. But with the expansion of cruise and then airline travel, trunks gave way to a variety of baggage that could be crafted to coordinate. By 1925, Conan Doyle had made several transcontinental trips. To supplement his already significant writing income, he went on the lecture circuit, speaking about his friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes and of his growing fascination with spiritualism. And such long journeys would afford him the time and the ability to relax, read, and write.<br />
<br />
But in order to be comfortable and efficient, and to avoid any interruption of his schedule when alighting in places that had no writing desk, Conan Doyle assured that he would always have a place to write through his commissioning of a writing desk trunk. According to <i><a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/arthur-conan-doyle-desk-goyard-salon-art-design">Architectural Digest</a></i>,<br />

"He requested a custom-made trunk that would enable him to comfortably pursue his writing on his continuous worldwide forays. While such luxury may not be within most travelers' budgets today, there are other ways to pay an homage to times gone by. In fact, we noticed that the Spanish furniture brand JMM has a similar setup. Its <a href="https://www.fastcodesign.com/90133447/this-office-in-a-box-is-a-cubicle-you-might-actually-want-to-use">HO is a home office in a box</a>, at once a piece of furniture and a cubicle: a console that transforms into a workstation, complete with a file cabinet, shelves, LED task lamp, stool, and integrated power.<br />

The closest high school to where I lived in Waterloo, Ontario, for many years is Kitchener Collegiate Institute, the alma mater of Margaret Sturm and Kenneth Millar. If those mentions don't ring a very loud bell, it may be that you know the two KCI grads under other names: <b><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Millar">Margaret Millar</a></b> and <b><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Macdonald">Ross Macdonald</a></b>, two of the significant figures of mid-20th-century American crime fiction. <br />
<br />
I wish I could say "Canadian" crime fiction, but the duo, who married in 1938, spent most of their adult lives in California, and set the majority of their work there. (Millar did use Canadian settings on a few occasions, notably <i>The Iron Gates</i>, published in 1946.) Canada does its best to take pride in them, and I know I was not the only researcher to visit the KCI library to find a copy of the student literary magazine in which Millar's first short story appeared in 1931.<br />
<br />
I said little about those two sort-of-Canadians in an essay about Canadian crime fiction that I wrote as a graduate student in 1973. The essay itself is lost somewhere in my archives, but I have many of my notes, as well as a practically illegible handwritten memo from the professor, who I suspect knew nothing about the subject, calling my work "scholarly."</div>

I analyzed and classified about a dozen novels, and there's some evidence that I thought at the time those were all the Canadian mysteries there were. If I did, I was wildly wrong; even then, Derrick Murdoch, the first president of <a href="http://www.torontobootmakers.com/">The Bootmakers of Toronto</a>, was writing extensively about such fiction in the Globe and Mail, and later David Skene Melvin, BSI, would add to the literature with several anthologies, notably <i>Crime in a Cold Climate</i>, that offered samples of CanLit dating back to the 1880s. <br />
<br />
A few of the Canadian novels I examined were actually set in Canada, such as Hugh Garner's 1970 <i>The Sin Snipe</i>. But more of the books were like those of Millar and Macdonald, essentially American even if the authors were nominally Canadian. For example, <i>The Long Way Down</i> is set in Virginia Beach, of all places, though it's the work of a Canadian, Douglas Hall, who's still at it four decades and two dozen mysteries later.<br />
<br />
These observations are a prelude to what I want to say about <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Elementary-She-Read-Sherlock-Bookshop/dp/1683310969">Elementary, She Read</a></i>, the new novel by <b><a href="http://vickidelany.com/">Vicki Delany</a></b>, who lives not far from me in Prince Edward County, Ontario. I have not read any of Delany's previous books, and I am so clueless that I didn't actually know her name even though she has served as president of <a href="http://www.crimewriterscanada.com/">Crime Writers of Canada</a> and produced more than a dozen successful books. But I could no longer overlook her, of course, when she started writing about Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
<i>Elementary, She Read</i> is billed as "A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery," signalling that there are going to be more books with the same setting and central character. The character is Gemma Doyle, no known relation to Arthur Conan of that ilk, who has (and cleverly demonstrates in almost every chapter) a remarkable Holmes-like ability to observe and make deductions. The setting is a smallish town on Cape Cod in Massachusetts — not, obviously, part of Canada. Delany is, in fact, following in the footsteps of Millar, Macdonald, and the rest; and who can blame her for paying attention to where her potential market is to be found, something even ACD did in his later stories?<br />
<br />
This book, published in spring 2017 by Crooked Lane Books, is squarely in the "cozy" mystery tradition. Its young woman narrator/sleuth who enjoys an on-again, off-again relationship with a hunky police detective will be familiar to readers of Joan Hess and, for that matter, Janet Evanovich. The author Delany's book most reminds me of, however, is Charlotte MacLeod (Alisa Craig) — who is, what do you know, another Canadian setting her action in (frequently) Massachusetts.<br />
<br />
The most distinctive feature of <i>Elementary, She Read</i>, at least for you and me, is its setting in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, associated with Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room. I won't belabour the details, so let's just say that while most would-be-Sherlockian novels are a bit heavy-handed and tone-deaf (yes, even Graham Moore's <i><a href="http://ihose.co/ihose30">The Sherlockian</a></i>), Delany seems to get the Irene, <i>Beeton's</i>, <i>Strand</i>, and Speckled Band allusions exactly right. She also refers in a natural way to Cumberbatch collectibles… and to <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20418852-jewel-of-the-thames">Jewel of the Thames</a></i>, the first young adult novel by yet another Canadian author, Angela Misri. Oh, and there's a dog called Violet.<br />
