Smith called this short-tempered scion). Both wanted to see Sir Arthur recognized for the genius of his creation. (No doubt they also wanted to see some of that sweet royalty money for the estate, but that's a story for another time.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But doesn't our assignment of Watson as the author acknowledge the true genius of Conan Doyle? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">His ability as a storyteller was so skilled that in some cases, contemporary readers couldn't discern fact from fiction. But Holmes's actions—and later his words—tell us differently.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">One of the universal similarities in many religions and in philosophy is the cyclical structure of things:  nature and human nature are repetitive and predictable.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Ice ages follow eons of warmth, only to be followed by warming once again. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Volcanoes rise from the ocean depths, creating islands that later teem with life. But reactivated lava can snuff out that life and build more land mass.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">On Ash Wednesday, the Christian religion reminds us that "you are from dust and unto dust you shall return." The Hindu religion has a belief in the cyclical and self-renewing nature of all things. It’s called <i>saṃsāra</i>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In the Victorian era in which Holmes and Watson lived, a sense of order and predictability was prized above all else. This is why clients sought the help of Sherlock Holmes: he used his logic and knowledge of past crimes to help make sense of the uneasy present.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In fact, he recommended to Inspector MacDonald to study the history of crime, indicating that he would find trends to help guide him in future crimes: </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Mr. Mac, the most practical thing that you ever did in your life would be to shut yourself up for three months and read twelve hours a day at the annals of crime. Everything comes in circles—even Professor Moriarty. Jonathan Wild was the hidden force of the London criminals, to whom he sold his brains and his organization on a fifteen per cent commission. <b>The old wheel turns, and the same spoke comes up. It’s all been done before, and will be again</b>. I’ll tell you one or two things about Moriarty which may interest you.” (<i>The Valley of Fear</i>)</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Was Holmes ignorant of philosophy? Perhaps in the traditional sense of studying particular philosophers. She questioned him about the locked room and he responded:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“ ‘Photography is one of my hobbies,’ said he. ‘I have made my dark room up there.’ ”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This seems to be a strange claim to make, and it makes us wonder whether Mr. Rucastle had thought this through. Perhaps he was just as startled to find Miss Hunter snooping around as she was when he confronted her, and in such a circumstance he simply blurted out what seemed to be a logical explanation for an isolated and locked room.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">However, there was a flaw in his hastily-told lie: hobbyists — particularly those who dabble in a pastime that produces some kind of art — typically like to share the fruits of their labor.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Looking around the walls of the Copper Beeches, Miss Hunter would have been able to immediately discern that Rucastle's supposed hobby was a ruse. He was, as he said, "the only one in the world," [STUD] and because of those special powers, he had every reason to believe he would remain unique.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And yet, we find him again and again, demonstrating his willingness to share his secrets in an effort to advance the profession. He was more than willing to make it clear how he knew the things he knew.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Consider the times he recommended to Watson his monographs. In <i>The Sign of Four,</i> he mentioned his monograph <i>Upon the Distinction between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccoes</i>, following it up with others: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Here is my monograph upon the tracing of footsteps, with some remarks upon the uses of plaster of Paris as a preserver of impresses. Here, too, is a curious little work upon the influence of a trade upon the form of the hand, with lithotypes of the hands of slaters, sailors, corkcutters, compositors, weavers, and diamond-polishers. In "The Abbey Grange," Watson was hurt by Sherlock Holmes's criticism over his dramatization of certain cases. He asked Holmes with some bitterness, "Why do you not write them yourself?" At present I am, as you know, fairly busy, but I propose to devote my declining years to the composition of a text-book which shall focus the whole art of detection into one volume.
