There is no indication that the students would have had knowledge beforehand of exactly which work from the classics would be the subject of their translation.</div><div><br /></div><div>The proofs of "half a chapter of Thucydides" arrived at Soames' rooms, and were left out when Gilchrist happened to stop by. Now, he wouldn't have had to copy the entirety of the paper (nor would he have had time to do so) while Soames was out. But all he had to do was to verify which chapter the excerpt was from.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then, Gilchrist could retire to his room and study the chapter in question.</div><div><br /></div><div>But here's our question: if Soames had to review the proofs for accuracy, then perhaps he could have used them to his advantage. That is, if they were taken from a different text than the students had in their possession, variations or inaccuracies might have been helpful.</div><div><br /></div><div>That is, had Soames left any errors in the text in place, they would have acted as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictitious_entry" target="_blank">mountweazel</a> of sorts and indicated who was translating the proofs in hand versus who was copying from his text.<div><br /></div><div>Meanwhile, a weasel of a different sort is lurking at Baker Street Elementary...</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; His legacy lives on in legions of books, collections, societies, and discussions across the world. And of course, in his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>It also lives on in a new lecture series from the Portsmouth City Council as part of <a href="http://cd.visitportsmouth.co.uk/conandoyle" target="_blank">The Arthur Conan Doyle Collection Lancelyn Green Bequest</a>. </p><p>Professor Neil McCaw was an individual who promoted his memory in his work and volunteering. Professor McCaw was a professor of Victorian Literature and Culture at Winchester University and became involved in the Collection in 2005, where he spent his time advising on the initial cataloging and identifying it as a unique and diverse collection. Neil McCaw passed away last year.</p><p>Neil went on to give wider academic talks globally about the Collection, which broadened our audiences, producing texts for exhibitions that have toured around the world to diverse audiences, writing and producing a facsimile for "The Adventure of the Creeping Man" and then later on curating the <a href="http://cd.visitportsmouth.co.uk/conandoyle/you-dont-know-sherlock-holmes-yet" target="_blank">You Don't Know Sherlock Holmes, Yet exhibition</a>. </p><p>Professor Neil McCaw was a true advocate for the collection, and his expert knowledge and advice have given a legacy to this world-class Collection, maintaining Richard Lancelyn Green's original bequest to make it accessible to the public.</p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Lecture Series for Professor Neil McCaw </h2><p>To commemorate Professor Neil McCaw's commitment and dedication to the Conan Doyle Collection, and to showcase the legacy of his work, by sharing learning and broadening the knowledge of the collection, the Portsmouth Conan Doyle Collection will be hosting a series of virtual talks with people — authors, fans, academics — who are also passionate about Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes, and who have a connection to the Conan Doyle Collection.</p><p>This is the schedule of upcoming talks, all of which are free to the public and will be held on Zoom; registration is required.</p><p><br /></p><h4 style="text-align: left;">Arthur Conan Doyle and the Case of the Parsee Lawyer, presented by author Shrabani Basu</h4><p>When George Edalji, a young Indian lawyer, is convicted of mutilating horses in a Staffordshire mining village in 1903, he appeals to Arthur Conan Doyle to clear his name. The creator of Sherlock Holmes, accepts the request and proceeds to investigate the case. Based on letters, police records and home office files, Shrabani Basu, author of <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3oMMa51" target="_blank">The Mystery of the Parsee Lawyer</a></i>, goes on the trail of Arthur Conan Doyle as he wears the hat of Sherlock Holmes and uncovers the dark secrets lying in the English countryside. What is revealed is a story of racism and police corruption at the turn of the century. (<i><a href="https://amzn.to/2SPXZvn" target="_blank">Deerstalker! Holmes and Watson on Screen</a></i> by Ron Haydock, The Scarecrow Press, 1978)</div><div><br /></div><div>Thus was born <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3w6pf7l" target="_blank">The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother</a></i>. The film brought Wilder, Feldman, and Kahn back together, as Sigerson Holmes, Orville Sacker, and Jenny Hill, respectively. Sigerson was Sherlock's younger and insecure brother, and Sacker (whose name was inspired by Conan Doyle's first choice of name for Dr. Watson: Ormond Sacker), who had a phonographic memory – a perfect recollection of the spoken word. </div><div><br /></div><div>Interestingly, Wilder's first choice to play Sherlock Holmes in that film was Keith McConnell (who had played Holmes in Schlitz Malt Liquor commercials!). McConnell had also played Holmes in the famously-deleted scene in Neil Simon's <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3hC9O2u" target="_blank">Murder By Death</a></i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Because of the change in venue from Hollywood to London and because of a shift in scheduling, McConnell was unable to play the role in Smarter Brother — a role that had been much more prominent before a rewrite.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sherlock Holmes, of course, would go to none other than <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/03/remembering-douglas-wilmer-bsi.html" target="_blank">Douglas Wilmer</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Meanwhile, Baker Street Elementary has some ab(by)normal activity in its theatre department...</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Jon Lellenberg, invested in the Baker Street Irregulars as "Rodger Prescott of Evil Memory" in 1974, passed away on April 24, 2021 after a short illness.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Jon's contribution to our hobby was almost too immense for words. He was a confidant and representative of the Conan Doyle Estate for many years, extending back to a close relationship with Dame Jean Conan Doyle. As an author and editor, he contributed to a number of books on Conan Doyle's life, including A Life in Letters and Dangerous Work, both co-edited with Dan Stashower, BSI ("Thurston"). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Jon's knowledge of early Irregularity and the times in which those Irregulars lived and worked was unrivaled, which made him the perfect person to tackle the BSI Archival History Series. But what about other appearances of corrective lenses in the works?</div><div><br /></div><div>Here's a quick accounting of some of those who required glasses:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Mr. Sherman</b>, the animal proprietor, had "stooping shoulders, a stringy neck, and blue-tinted glasses." [SIGN]</li><li><b>Mary Sutherland</b> wore pince-nez and her stepfather, James Windibank "wore tinted glasses against the glare." [IDEN]</li><li><b>John Openshaw</b> entered 221B Baker Street, saying ""I owe you an apology," he said, raising his golden pince-nez to his eyes." [FIVE]</li><li>A more grandiose entrance came from <b>Lord Robert St. Simon</b>, who "advanced slowly into the room, turning his head from left to right, and swinging in his right hand the cord which held his golden eyeglasses." [NOBL]</li><li><b>Jephro Rucastle</b> "sat at [Miss Stoper's] elbow with a pair of glasses on his nose, looking very earnestly at the ladies who entered." [COPP]</li><li><b>Wilson Kemp</b> "was a little gentleman, with glasses, thin in the face, but very pleasant in his ways, for he was laughing all the time that he was talking." [GREE]</li><li>One of the other famous pairs of glasses in the Canon was worn by <b>Charles Augustus Milverton</b>, whose "grey eyes, which gleamed brightly from behind broad, golden-rimmed glasses." [CHAS]</li><li><b>Dr. Mortimer</b> had "a long nose like a beak, which jutted out between two keen, gray eyes, set closely together and sparkling brightly from behind a pair of gold-rimmed glasses." [HOUN]</li><li><b>John McMurdo</b>'s "gray eyes gleamed with sudden and dangerous anger from behind his glasses." [VALL]</li><li>"Our client [<b>Nathan Garrideb</b>] shone with pleasure and his eyes gleamed from behind his big glasses." [3GAR]</li><li><b>Professor Presbury</b> "appeared at the front window, and we were aware of a pair of keen eyes from under shaggy brows which surveyed us through large horn glasses." [CREE]</li></ul>We're grateful that Conan Doyle wasn't so completely turned off by the study of the ocular that he gave up thinking about such things entirely. One of the reasons the Canon worked well at the time and remains popular today is its reality. Knowledge of astronomy — nil. Admirers of Sherlock Holmes all know that Watson erred badly in his assessment of his roommate, rendered as "Sherlock Holmes — his limits" in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. We are talking, remember, about the same Sherlock Holmes who quoted Goethe, Hafiz and Flaubert, and who chatted over dinner about the causes of the change in the obliquity of the ecliptic. <br /><br /> But performance appraisals are never easy, and anybody who has been a parent knows about reading a school report card, basking in every positive comment, and tensing up over any hint that the great hope of the next generation needs to work harder on spelling. <div><br /></div><div>Mastery of one class is noted with an A as "profound", of another as "feeble" with an F; and what can a parent make of a notation that the student's work in a third field of study is "accurate, but unsystematic"? What was the teacher thinking? <br /><br /> In this case, what was Watson thinking? </div><div><br /></div><div>Was he really qualified to judge Holmes's violin playing, or his proficiency with the singlestick? A physician himself, he might reasonably pass judgement on Holmes's knowledge of anatomy and even chemistry, but did he have the qualifications in philosophy to conclude that Holmes's expertise there too was "nil"? <br /><br /> Such objections have been raised many times. But perhaps the most damning criticism of Watson's report card on Holmes is the number of subjects that it entirely omits. </div><div><br /></div><div>Mathematics, for example: had Watson not yet noticed the mathematical finesse that allowed Holmes to work out the calculations of the Musgrave oak and elm, or to boast when determining a train's speed that "the calculation is a simple one"? <br /><br /> The railway calculation may be simple in theory, by the way, but it's awkward in practice. Several Sherlockians have tied themselves in knots over a formula for working out the speed in one's head, including Julian Wolff in <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> in 1963 (The Editor's Gas-Lamp: "The Dynamics of the Binomial Theorem," <i>BSJ</i>, Vol. 13, No. 4, 1963. pp. 199-200).</div><div><br /></div><div>He advised that to come up with his conclusion of 53.5 miles per hour, Holmes merely had to "divide 1227.27 by the number of seconds required to travel 1800 feet". "Since the distance is being kept fixed," he writes, "that just gives an inverse relationship between rate and time, as illustrated in Wolff's graph. The curve itself is a hyperbola."</div><div><br /><br /> But Watson's report card for Holmes has no line for mathematics! Nor is there one for foreign languages, though it appears that Holmes had some acquaintance at least with French, German, Italian, Persian, Arabic and Tibetan. <br /><br /> What about zoology: was it as "variable" as Holmes's botany? Maybe it was, at that, considering his willingness to believe that snakes drink milk, and his insistence that a worm found in an ordinary match-box was "unknown to science". It is notable that his response to the charlatanism of "The Creeping Man" is cast as philosophy (nil) rather than physiology (feeble). <br /><br /> There is an interesting lacuna somewhere between Holmes's alleged knowledge of botany (variable… knows nothing of practical gardening) and his expertise in the varied soils of London, which Watson places under Geology. It is interesting to imagine that Holmes, who grew up as the heir to a line of "country squires", got his knowledge of dirt from listening to conversations between his father and a steward or foreman on the family land, but did not stick around long enough for the repetitive labor of planting. And yet he knew, in the case of "Wisteria Lodge", what one is supposed to do with a spud, a tin box, and an elementary book on botany — it's never too late to learn.</div><div><br /></div><div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Don't Know Much About History?  </h2>And as I recently prepared an essay on canonical references to English kings, queens, battles, and constitutions, now in print as <i><a href="http://credmond.ca/ashoe.html" target="_blank">A Sherlockian History of England</a></i>, I found myself wondering why Watson does not even attempt to rate his new acquaintance's "Knowledge of History" along with Literature and Astronomy. </div><div><br /></div><div>That knowledge cannot have been quite "nil", since an English schoolboy can hardly escape without learning a little about William of Orange and the Battle of Waterloo. In fact, as I point out in my essay, Holmes studies early English charters (land deeds), investigates an ancient British barrow (burial site), examines Saxon and Norman graves with professional care at Shoscombe Old Place, recognizes allusions to Charles I and Charles II in the Musgrave ritual, buys a 1642 book and chats with Watson about its origins, knows one Napoleonic battle from another, has an opinion about the causes of the American Revolution, ostentatiously identifies the date of a century-old house — in short, shows every evidence of being familiar with British history, especially (but not only) its relevance to his own work. <br /><br /> Knowledge of History, then: profound, although one might admit to its being "unsystematic" in view of the theory he apparently espouses connecting the Cornish language to ancient Chaldean, brought to Cornwall by Phoenician tin traders from Lebanon. The mildest thing one might say about this suggestion is that <a href="http://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/ads-l/2002-May/022206.html" target="_blank">modern archaeologists do not agree with it</a>, but Holmes the historian gets points for being aware that tin mining has been the backbone of Cornish civilization for many centuries. <br /><br /><br /> It would appear that he knew something of American history too, incidentally, at least enough to be aware of the Ku Klux Klan (in "The Five Orange Pips") and to make sense of Effie Munro's story in "The Yellow Face". What his marks might be in genetics, in view of how he accepted that narrative, is a question for another day. <br /><br /> History, mathematics, biology, even geography (though Holmes apparently knew where Egria was): Watson's sketch of Holmes's limits leaves out too many basic subjects. </div><div><br /></div><div>But of course he was still getting to know his roommate in those days, and one wonders how he had had the opportunity to test that "good practical knowledge of British law" and the expertise in poisons. </div><div><br /></div><div>Would you hire a young professional based on so partial a resumé? </div><div><br /></div><div>Depends on the importance you attach to his knowledge of sensational literature, I suppose.<div dir="ltr" id="divtagdefaultwrapper" style="color: black; font-family: Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </div> </div><div><br /></div>

Watson, MD rather than by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.</div><div><br /></div><div>This was first undertaken by Monsignor Ronald Knox in a paper delivered at Oxford University in 1911. Michael Crowe covered it extensively in his <i><a href="https://wessexpress.com/html/knox.html" target="_blank">Ronald Knox and Sherlock Holmes: Origins of Sherlockian Studies,</a></i> published by Wessex Press (now out of print, but <a href="https://amzn.to/3alQ92s" target="_blank">occasionally available from other sellers</a>).</div><div><br /></div><div>Dorothy Sayers summed up the hobby in Unpopular Opinions in 1946, demonstrating the application of Higher Criticism to the Canon had </div><blockquote><div>"the aim of showing that, by those methods, one could disintegrate a modern classic as speciously as a certain school of critics have endeavoured to distintigrate the Bible. Since then, the thing has become a hobby among a select set of jesters."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>Futher, she specified:</div><blockquote><div>"The rule of the game is that it must be played as solemnly as a county cricket match at Lord's; the slightest touch of extravagance or burlesque ruins the atmosphere."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And so, we acknowledge Conan Doyle's important role—that of literary agent—and Watson's eternal contribution to the world of detective fiction (fact?).
