Using the ground as a hiding place for one's crime is nothing new. According to the tradition in the Bible, the first child of Adam and Eve was Cain, who was a tiller of soil. He killed his brother Abel and buried him in the field.<br />
<br />
But you can't hide that kind of thing from God, who at that time only had four people to monitor on the Earth. God said:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"What have you done? Listen! your brother's blood cries out to me from the soil."</blockquote>
How many of the Sherlock Holmes stories involve burial as a method of keeping a crime from being discovered?<br />
<br />
In <i><b>The Sign of Four</b></i>, the ultimate in buried treasure stories, we come across two instances of buried treasure. Major Sholto's two sons assumed that the Agra treasure would be buried on the grounds of Pondicherry Lodge, and over the course of six years dug for it.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“It looks as though all the moles in England had been let loose in it. I have seen something of the sort on the side of a hill near Ballarat, where the prospectors had been at work.”</blockquote>
But the Four got their hands on the treasure by first murdering the merchant Achmet, who was carrying the iron box that contained the treasure. They buried him and the treasure in the same area of the fort.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"We carried the box, therefore, into the same hall where we had buried the body, and there, under certain bricks in the best-preserved wall, we made a hollow and put our treasure."</blockquote>
In "<b>Silver Blaze</b>," Holmes found the wax vesta that was "invisible, buried in the mud."<br />
<br />
"<b>The Musgrave Ritual</b>" was another buried treasure story, originating in the 17th century when the royal party fled and "left many of their most precious possessions buried behind them, with the intention of returning for them in more peaceful times."<br />
<br />
In "<b>The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax</b>," a specially constructed coffin concealed the unconscious lady, in an attempt to bury her with the corpse of a deceased elderly woman.<br />
<br />
There are other instances of burying valuables, but not in the earth:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The "small sliding shutter" that hid the photograph [SCAN] </li>
<li>The "small black cavity" beneath the hinged square of wood in the floor [SECO]</li>
<li>The "square piece of board" under the carpet that covered the T joint of the gas-pipe [NAVA]</li>
<li>A square that "had opened in the planks" in the rooms of Nathan Garrideb [3GAR[</li>
</ul>

We've often remarked on Christopher Morley's bon mot that the totality of Sherlock Holmes stories is "<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/11/a-textbook-of-friendship.html#.XW0gFihKjb0">a textbook of friendship</a>." But the Canon is so rich in details that could be considered true to life that there are other elements of Victorian life that we're exposed to on a regular basis.<br />
<br />
Conan Doyle's skill as a storyteller is evident: he didn't need to spend a great deal of time or space writing about certain elements; he knew when to "cut out the poetry" [RETI] and when to evoke emotion from his descriptions.<br />
<br />
Since today is Labor Day in the United States, consider the various jobs and professions in the stories. We're generally not treated to a detailed description of them, because it was assumed that readers knew what these individuals did simply by virtue of the name of the job.<br />
<br />
But to go through the list of occupations in the Canon is to have a snapshot of daily life. From plumbers (CHAS) to bank presidents (REDH, BERY), doctors (too many to list) to lawyers (NORW, SUSS), cab drivers (multiple) to carpenters (REDH), and grooms (so many) to governesses (COPP, THOR, WIST), we're treated to a roll call of jobs we know and understand.<br />
<br />
But there are other occupations that we might not come across on a daily basis. A bodymaster in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, a garroter in "The Empty House," a yeggman in "The Musgrave Ritual." An engineer even got his own story and we had ample opportunity to understand the type of work he did ("The Engineer's Thumb").<br />

When you have a world-class collection, it makes sense for a world-class institution to house it. And not just any such institution (as there are many), but one that can meet the needs of the depositor.<br />

In an effort that would impress Sherlock Holmes himself, the Baker Street Irregulars and UCLA Film & Television Archive are teaming up in an effort to solve the mystery of the lost Sherlock Holmes films.<br />
<br />
The <a href="https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/" target="_blank">UCLA Film & Television Archive</a> is the second-largest moving image archive in the U.S. after the Library of Congress, and the world's largest university-based media archive. <a href="https://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Irregulars</a> (BSI) is the first international Sherlock Holmes society. Together, the organizations are mounting a world-wide search for the lost Sherlock Holmes films.<br />
<br />
The project is called “<b>Searching for Sherlock: The Game’s Afoot</b>,” and the two nonprofit organizations plan to contact film archives, Sherlock Holmes societies, film historians, collectors, and other potential sources around the world to find in their efforts. The plan is to restore and eventually screen currently lost films featuring the world’s first consulting detective.<br />
<br />
After first appearing in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> in 1887, Sherlock Holmes became a household name, appearing in 56 short stories and four novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Since that time, the detective has appeared in every form of media and the works have never been out of print.<br />
<br />
Sherlock Holmes has been played in hundreds of film and television shows, first appearing in the one-minute film "<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/02/baffled-look-upon-holmes-face-chas_21.html#.XWfGMyhKjb0" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Baffled</a>," produced by Thomas Edison in 1900. This was the same time that William Gillette was playing Holmes on stage. Gillette went on to film his famous play in 1916, and that film was thought to be lost to the ages until <a href="https://ihose.co/1916film" target="_blank">a surprise announcement in 2014 that <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> had been found</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>Searching for Sherlock</b> will seek to find and restore other known Sherlock Holmes films, including a British production of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, produced in 1914; a Danish series, produced by Nordisk films, beginning in 1908; <i>The Missing Rembrandt</i>, produced in 1932, starring <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/Arthur%20Wontner" target="_blank">Arthur Wontner</a>; and many more.<br />
<br />
According to Dr. Jan-Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Archive, more than 100 films about the iconic British detective are lost or are in need of restoration or preservation. A committee has been formed to lead the search, including such notables as <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose85" target="_blank">Nicholas Meyer, BSI</a> ("A Fine, Morocco Case), author of the book and Oscar-nominated screenplay <i>The Seven-Per-Cent Solution</i>, and leading silent film historian <b>Kevin Brownlow</b>.<br />
<br />
The Honorary Project Chair is <b>Robert Downey, Jr.</b>, who has portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the screen in two films, with a third Holmes film that will begin production in the fall and scheduled to be released December 2021.<br />

There are certain aspects of Baker Street life that aren't mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes stories, but Watson doesn't tell us about them. Perhaps he does so out of a sense of discretion. Or simply because such minutiae would interfere with a good story.<br />
<br />
For example, dental hygiene is important, as Holmes suggests Watson's overnight accouterments for a trip to Stoke Moran:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“An Eley’s No. 2 is an excellent argument with gentlemen who can twist steel pokers into knots. That and a tooth-brush are, I think, all that we need.” ["The Speckled Band"]</blockquote>
Although it immediately raises the question as to why Holmes and Watson might share a toothbrush...<br />
<br />
Similarly, we wonder about the laundry situation in Baker Street. Like any other normal humans living in similar conditions at the time, Holmes and Watson would have required fresh linens and clean shirts and undergarments. But other than Lestrade mentioning "Aldrige, who helped us in the bogus laundry affair," there's no mention of washing clothes in the Canon.<br />
<br />
We come close to is from hearing about Holmes's "cat-like love of personal cleanliness," and that even in his rudimentary dwelling on the moors in <i>The Hound of the Bakervilles</i>, he arranged things such that "his chin should be as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street."<br />
<br />
Back at Baker Street, it's likely that Mrs. Hudson arranged clean bed linens and towels, as any boarding-house operator would [Related: listen to our discussion about <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles133" target="_blank">Boarding Houses</a> on Trifles]. But what about the laundry? Would she do that herself? Given Holmes's "princely" payments, our supposition is that she likely had a washerwoman to take care of it.<br />
<br />
Which brings us to Mrs. Turner. She's only mentioned once (in "A Scandal in Bohemia"), and she's called the "landlady." But perhaps she was a close associate of Mrs. Hudson's who was familiar enough with the establishment and its occupants, as a launderer of Holmes's and Watson's underwear might be. Was Mrs. Turner really the Baker Street washerwoman?<br />

We recently received an email from <b>Max Magee</b>, a member of the Madison Wisconsin scion society <b>The Notorious Canary Trainers</b>.<br />
<br />
In an age when we're used to binge watching (or binge reading, if you will), we tend to forget the episodic nature of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Recall that when contemporary readers picked up <i>The Strand Magazine</i>, they had to wait for each story or chapter in the following month's publication. Or even years between segments.<br />
<br />
We're spoiled by <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2HnMe6L" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">The Complete Sherlock Holmes</a>—</i>the entire canon of Sherlock Holmes stories in one volume. So we don't need to ask ourselves if Sherlock Holmes will return after "The Final Problem." We know that "The Second Stain" or "The Copper Beeches" aren't the last story.<br />
<br />
Sherlock Holmes fans in the early 20th century, much like <i>Game of Thrones</i> fans in the 2010s, had to wait for each new segment to sate their hunger. They had no idea how long they had to wait between groups of stories.<br />
<br />
Well, Max let us know that he's sending out a series of nine emails containing the scanned PDF pages of the serialized chapters of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> over a period of nine months. This corresponds to the August–April publication period of <i>The Strand Magazine</i> from 1901–1902. Just send him an email: <b>maxpmagee AT gmail DOT com</b>.<br />

In a way, it reminds us of the wonderful series that Stanford University undertook in 2006, when they reproduced the cover of The Strand and released one story per month. We wrote about it:<br />

We've always been fascinated with the use of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_fever" target="_blank">brain fever</a> as a malady in the Canon. Brain fever is a medical condition where a part of the brain becomes inflamed and causes symptoms that present as a fever.<br />
<br />
As such, diagnoses might range from encephalitis to meningitis to scarlet fever. But if we look at the sufferers of brain fever in the Sherlock Holmes stories, this was something else entirely.<br />
<br />
Think about the conditions under which each of these individuals came down with brain fever:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Sarah Cushing</b> ("The Cardboard Box") received an unpleasant delivery related to her sister and brother-in-law.</li>
<li><b>Alice Rucastle</b> ("The Copper Beeches") was harassed and mentally abused by her father.</li>
<li><b>Nancy Barclay</b> ("The Crooked Man") was visited by a past love she thought long dead.</li>
<li><b>Rachel Howells</b> ("The Musgrave Ritual") knew that the butler did it, but had other plans.</li>
<li><b>Percy Phelps</b> ("The Naval Treaty") had the responsibility of the Empire on his shoulders when he lost his homework.</li>
</ul>

Each of them had a severe mental shock before contracting brain fever. These were all what we would today call a nervous breakdown or something more specific of a mental illness: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc. </div>

Interestingly, four of these occurred in <i>The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</i> (CARD, CROO, NAVA, MUSG), with the other (COPP) being the final installment in <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. What was happening in Arthur Conan Doyle's life at the time he wrote these (c. mid-1892–mid-1893)? </div>

Was someone in his life under particular duress that caused them to exhibit such symptoms, and that in turn influenced his writing? We're not aware of anyone previously exploring this hypothesis (although we'd be glad to hear if we're wrong).</div>

We've been seeing lots of posts around the internet about Watson's birthday today, and we thought we'd add some perspective here to bring it all together.<br />
<br />
We were tipped off by a post from David Marcum's <a href="https://17stepprogram.blogspot.com/2016/08/happy-164th-birthday-dr-john-h-watson.html?fbclid=IwAR2G88xxR3aS66sQG6y-yncBD3e6Wr0gz9MMDFaNOsNKh6oEH8riMnYBS5s" target="_blank">A Seventeen Step Program</a> blog, from August of 2016. There he did a good job of noting that August 7 was a widely-accepted date, first claimed by William S. Baring-Gould in his groundbreaking biography <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2GSVoIk" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</a></i>. (However, as Marcum notes, there are no reasons given for that date.)<br />
<br />
Watson's presence was a necessity to Sherlock Holmes. The detective encouraged his participation in their adventures, once remarking, "I am lost without my Boswell."<br />
<br />
And so too would we be.<br />
<br />
For without Watson's stalwart nature and descriptive prose, we'd miss so much about Sherlock Holmes. From his very cases to his moods and activities throughout, Watson's observations of Holmes gave us just about everything we know about the world's first consulting detective.<br />
<br />
Holmes once chided Watson's abilities, saying, "You see but you do not observe," but that's really not the case, is it? After all, Watson's keen observations gave us all of the tone and color of the Canon. He is the heart and soul of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, while Holmes is offstage for the majority of the book.<br />
<br />
When a journalist once called Watson "underdeveloped" and "boring and slow and lifeless," we jumped at the opportunity <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/friend-and-colleague-dr-watson-nobl_4.html?fbclid=IwAR0PaH79G_HPAXVYUSs4idwWLmiIyGOR8TKJ5ShU1UvIFIcY8k9eVQarRik#.XUskrOhKjb1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">to defend the good doctor</a>. Because he is worthy of our respect and love.<br />
<br />
Edward Hardwicke famously portrayed Watson in the Granada series, and <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/05/and-went-out-houn_17.html?fbclid=IwAR3wjTpoRxOxe1I2Btr8g2JkB9eSAv_0zkOChXNnFpcCzrcXovjokX2w8Mg#.XUskv-hKjb0" target="_blank">our remembrance of him</a> spanned visual and audio media.<br />
<br />
Over the course of some 136 episodes of <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/" target="_blank">Trifles</a> (so far), we talked about Watson and various aspects of his life. We've just received notice that the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> (BSI) will be hosting a conference in the summer of 2020.<br />
<br />
The conference is titled <b>Sherlock Holmes and the British Empire</b> and will be held from July 17–19, 2020 at <a href="https://visitbearmountain.com/" target="_blank">Bear Mountain Inn</a> in West Point, New York. More details will be forthcoming, and registration will open in January.<br />
<br />
The BSI is a literary society dedicated to keeping green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. It publishes <i><a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2001/05/01/subscribe-bsj/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i> (four quarterly issues, plus a Christmas Annual), numerous books from the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/the-bsi-press/" target="_blank">BSI Press</a>, and hosts the annual <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">BSI Weekend</a> in New York City each January.<br />
<br />
In addition, the BSI occasionally hosts conferences and expeditions. In the past, these have included sojourns to investigate <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2004/10/22/murderland/" target="_blank">the areas mentioned in <i>The Valley of Fear</i></a> (Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, 2004),  the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2008/09/01/tangled-skein/" target="_blank">American parts of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i></a> (Salt Lake City, Utah, 2008), as well as events dedicated to <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2010/01/25/harvard-set/" target="_blank">Sir Arthur Conan Doyle</a> (Harvard University, 2009), <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2015/12/31/behind-the-canonical-screen/" target="_blank">film</a> (UCLA, 2012), and <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2016/09/09/mind-art-sherlock-holmes/" target="_blank">The Mind and Art of Sherlock Holmes</a> (Chautauqua Institute, 2016).<br />

The very next BSI event is called <a href="http://bsiarchivelilly.org/" target="_blank">Building an Archive</a> and it is slated for November 8-10, 2019 to celebrate the move of the BSI Archive to the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana. More information at that link.<br />

Did you ever have a moment when you were trying to remember the origin of a Sherlock Holmes quote, but you just couldn't quite place it?<br />
<br />
Maybe you remember the quote exactly. Or perhaps just the gist of the quote, but not the exact words. And you go to your favorite source for searching the stories, putting in a variety of search terms, but nothing comes up.<br />
<br />
Then you spend some time trying to recall if you got the quote just right, and where you may have come across it. Was it something Holmes said? Was it an exchange with Watson? Or with a client? Was it uttered in Baker Street, or out at the scene of an investigation?<br />
<br />
Where did I see it? Where did I see it?<br />
<br />
I had one of those moments recently. I wanted to source this (ostensibly) Canonical quote and insert it into some conversation thread on Facebook or Twitter, and in those instances I like to have the story from which the quote is taken.<br />
<br />
The quote in question was was:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A small occurrence perhaps, but only small I think in a way that a vibrating needle may signal an earthquake."</blockquote>
<br />
But I just couldn't find it.<br />
<br />
I remembered the quote vividly. I searched every iteration of how I seemed to remember it. And still, nothing.<br />
<br />
And then it hit me.<br />
<br />
The quote wasn't from the Canon at all. It was from one of the Granada episodes with Jeremy Brett. It was from the opening scene with Dr. Huxtable coming to after having passed out on the hearth rug. Here's the context:<br />

"In speculating what storm had blown you here, I took the liberty of searching your person, I hope you will forgive me."<br />
"Oh yes, yes of course."<br />
"Your watch. Unblemished for at least thirty years, suddenly this morning scratched—when you thrust those coins, unthinkingly into your waistcoat pocket. The stern habit of a lifetime trampled under foot.<br />
A small occurrence perhaps but own small think in a way that a vibrating needle may signal an earthquake."</blockquote>
It's a testament to the team at Granada that they were able to adapt a scene from the original story, but add their own details and dialog in such away that it fit perfectly with what we would expect to read on the page.<br />
<br />
That was certainly the case with the writing team for BBC Radio when <a href="http://bertcoules.co.uk/">Bert Coules</a> was the head writer for the project that resulted in the entire Sherlock Holmes canon being dramatized for radio. There were instances when the team had to create situations for listeners that were not expressly written out by Watson. The writers had to infer and invent. Bert explains the entire process in <i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/221bbc.html">221 BBC: Writing for the World's Only Completely Dramatised Canon and Beyond</a></i>.<br />

When a writing team is fully invested in the project and has an intimate knowledge of the characters and style of the original material, it's more likely that a new scene or dialog will be just as believable (if not more so!) than the source material.<br />
<br />

Several years ago, I saw author <a href="http://www.petehautman.com/" target="_blank">Pete Hautman</a> speak at a Young Adult Writer's conference in Denver. Hautman explained to the crowd that when he submitted his book <i>How to Steal a Car</i> to his agent, his agent was surprised that Pete had written a young adult novel. The agent explained to the author that it was young adult because it had a fifteen year-old protagonist. Hautman replied that he just wrote a book. He didn't intend for it to be considered "young adult" in nature.<br />
<br />
The same could be said for Jeff Falkingham's excellent <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2le3kvN">Murder in Minnesota!</a></i> a book combining two of his Sherlock Holmes adventures and both with the same narrator, Petey Smith who is 12 years old in the first story and then 22 in the second.  The stories are well researched, capture the local flavor of life in both small towns and cities in late 19th century Minnesota, and are excellent Sherlock Holmes mysteries. For those who don't mind seeing the great detective outside of England, this is a must have collection.<br />
<br />
The first adventure, <i>Sherlock Holmes and the County Courthouse Caper</i>, takes place in 1886 when Holmes helps solve a series of grisly murders in The Minnesota River Valley.  The narrator of this adventure is 12 year old Petey Smith who, along with his family, befriends Holmes.<br />
<br />
Petey makes for a fun narrator, giving us a child's eye view of a complex mystery. Imagine if Wiggins had narrated part of <i>The Sign of the Fou</i>r, and you get an idea of the tone for this book. Falkingham does a particularly good job of blending in historical facts about Minnesota and includes an authentic historic railroad map of Western Minnesota which is important to the story.  Falkingham also has good knowledge of Sherlock Holmes lore. Fans of Baring-Gould's take on Holmes will know why Holmes was in America in 1886.<br />
<br />
I only caution that the murder victims in the book are described in savage detail and may be disturbing for sensitive young readers. I'd give the book a PG-13 rating, definitely okay for teenagers, but may be too intense for tweens.<br />
<br />
<br />
The second adventure, <i>Sherlock Holmes: In Search of the Source</i> takes place ten years after the Courthouse Caper. Petey is still the narrator, but he is older, on the verge of getting married. The mystery of this adventure involves a murder committed at the Schutte building, a boarding house in St. Paul. This story feels much more like a traditional Holmes adventure.<br />
<br />
Petey, at age 22, sounds much more like a young Watson, and the adventure plays out more like a typical Doyle story with grumbling police, a mysterious man following Holmes, and Petey telling the reader of Holmes's incredible skills of deduction. Falkingham also keeps up with blending in his historical facts about Minnesota into the narrative.<br />
<br />
We learn that St. Paul could have been named Pig's Eye if fate had taken a different turn, and much about the beer barons in the St. Paul area. My only complaint with this story is that at times I felt that the historic information got in the way of the narrative and the story was a little padded. That is a minor quibble, and I would still give this adventure five stars.<br />

For those of you who don't mind reading Sherlock Holmes adventures away from the foggy streets of London and sans Watson as narrator, <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2le3kvN">Murder in Minnesota!</a></i> is a book for you. Falkingham is a talented writer, and I hope he writes more Holmes adventures with Petey Smith. After all, there is plenty of time in the twentieth century when Holmes could have returned to Minnesota.<br />
<br />

Some of us come to new subjects through organized education, some through happenstance, and others through force of nature.<br />

The same might be said of the background and style of Henry Ward Beecher. According to Wikipedia,<br />

"Henry Ward Beecher was the son of Lyman Beecher, a Calvinist minister who became one of the best-known evangelists of his era. Several of his brothers and sisters became well-known educators and activists, most notably Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved worldwide fame with her abolitionist novel <i>Uncle Tom's Cabin</i>. Henry Ward Beecher graduated from Amherst College in 1834 and Lane Theological Seminary in 1837... Given that many evangelical leaders of the time preached fire and brimstone, the Beecher approach must have seemed quite unorthodox. Unorthodox in the way that a certain consulting detective's work was considered.<br />
