We initially heard about this film some time ago, but production seemed to have stalled at one point. Well, we're pleased to see that <a href="https://youtu.be/comz38kRsb0">the first trailer</a> for <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2296777/">Gnomeo and Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes</a></i> is out and indicates that the film will arrive in theaters in 2018.<br />
<br />
For those not familiar with the premise, Gnomeo and Juliet are two garden gnomes from the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377981/?ref_=tt_trv_cnn">eponymous movie</a> of 2011. These delightful fixtures of gardens everywhere come to life outside of the gaze of humans, and have adventures, with music by Elton John.<br />
<br />
Paramount Animation, a division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, is producing this film, the first animated film from MGM in a decade. It stars Johnny Depp as Sherlock Gnomes and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Dr. Watson, with Mary J. Blige as Irene. The official synopsis is as follows:<br />

When Gnomeo and Juliet first arrive in the city with their friends and family, their biggest concern is getting their new garden ready for spring. To us, this is another delightful way to introduce children to Sherlock Holmes. One of the most notable animated adventures is <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091149/?ref_=nv_sr_1">The Great Mouse Detective</a></i> (1986) and we're confident that <i>Sherlock Gnomes</i> will continue in that vein.</div>

Halloween has just passed (something we just acknowledged in <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles44">Trifles Episode 44: The Supernatural</a>) and Sherlockians and the public at large enjoyed the spectacle of costumes and candy that pervade neighborhoods across the land.<br />

And with it comes the opportunity to put one's faith in the known world and to dismiss that which is ethereal, glowing, or even effervescent.<br />

It's an approach that we hope brings more people into our fold who are new to Sherlock Holmes and are fascinated with the details within the story.<br />

We're absolutely delighted that Trifles was selected as a finalist in the Arts category of the <a href="http://podcastawards.com/">Podcast Awards</a> this year. Unfortunately, we didn't win the category, but we sincerely appreciate your support that made our nomination and finalist status possible.<br />

Our first show of the month was <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles40">Episode 40: Who Was Sarasate?</a> in which we looked at the great violinist who graced the stage at St. James's Hall in "The Adventure of the Red Headed League." Holmes and Watson attended his concert and we even included a recording of his from 1904 in Paris.<br />

Believe it or not, today marks what would have been Jeremy Brett's 84th birthday. It seems unthinkable to imagine the definitive Sherlock Holmes from the Granda productions of the 1980s and 1990s as an octogenarian, and even more unthinkable that it has been 22 years since he left us.<br />

When <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose99">Chris Redmond</a> decided to give up <a href="http://sherlockian.net/">Sherlockian.net</a> after 22 years, there was great uncertainty about its future. Would it be abandoned, archived, deleted or sustained? And who would handle any of the monumental work of modernizing the site that had its humble beginnings in 1994?<br />

Enter Liza Potts, an associate professor at Michigan State University. Potts runs the <a href="http://wide.cal.msu.edu/research/">WIDE Research Center</a> (Writing, Information and Design Experience) there and just so happened to like Sherlock Holmes. But she had no idea what was in store for her.<br />

With a handful of students and a select advisory board of Sherlockians, Prof. Potts set out to wrangle some 3,000 links and hundreds of pages, giving them the modern treatment. But as with all technical projects, there are human elements and stories galore that make this a fascinating adventure.<br />

Over the years I've proudly said that I was a full-fledged canine member of one of the noblest and oldest Sherlockian societies — not through any merits of my own, I hasten to add, but because of the leadership's hospitality and courtesy. But I now have reason to think that I've been inflating my credentials all these years.<br />
<br />
The story starts in 1981, when I was was already a long-time Sherlockian but not a particularly well-known one. I'd been part of the youth movement in the 1960s, a <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregular</a> since 1966, a <a href="http://torontobootmakers.com/">Bootmaker of Toronto</a> since the society was founded in 1972, and since 1979 the co-editor of the Bootmakers' magazine <i>Canadian Holmes</i>. But I didn't do much Sherlockian travelling, and of course I didn't have the continent-wide network of Sherlockian friends that the internet has now made possible.<br />
<br />
So it was kind of a big deal when I was planning a business trip to Chicago (those were the days, when my employer could afford to send me places), got in touch with somebody or other about maybe having lunch with a couple of local Sherlockians while I was there, and was pleased and intimidated to find that my visit coincided with the annual dinner of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/">The Hounds of the Baskerville [sic]</a>. Would I like to attend the event as a guest? Duh; yes I would.<br />
<br />
And I did, on October 5, 1981, at a place on North Wells Street called <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">That Steak Joynt</a> (which itself has a rather <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">mysterious history</a>). Under the leadership of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Mangler"><b>Bob Mangler</b></a>, Master of the Hounds for some forty years, the program included such things as the Hounds customarily do, and a showing of the half-hour "Silver Blaze" starring Canadian actor <b>Christopher Plummer</b>. I remember very little about the evening, to tell the truth, apart from a conversation with a young woman at my table who wanted to tell me about the limitations on women's involvement in Sherlockian matters in Chicago, a topic that I understand has not yet been exhausted 36 years later. (The Hounds didn't admit women members until a couple of decades after my visit, but women guests were welcome at its one meeting of the year. [<i>More on this in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose130">Episode 130</a> of <b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</b> - ed.</i>]) <br />

Much of what I know about the traditions of the Hounds, and indeed about the details of that 1981 dinner, is based on an admirable volume that has just been published, a "<b>75th Anniversary Edition</b>" history of the society, written half by <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Nieminski">John Nieminski</a></b> (taking the story up to 1983) and half by the present Master, <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Terras">Donald Terras</a></b>. Launched at the 2017 dinner a few weeks ago, a gala <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/10/episode-130-hounds-of-baskerville-sic.html">celebration of the society's dodranscentenary</a>, it tells the story in some detail from the society's 1943 founding by the great <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Vincent Starrett</a> up to the present day. I'm delighted to have acquired a copy of the book, and to find my name on page 59, which confirms my presence at the 1981 dinner and alleges, all too plausibly, that I made myself conspicuous by distributing copies of my little journal, <i>Canadian Holmes</i>, "left and right."<br />

Now here's the thing. I came home from Chicago with a pewter Hounds pin (which I still wear occasionally at Sherlockian events) and the distinct impression that the Master of the Hounds had awarded me an "honorary membership" in the society. I reported briefly on my Houndship at the next meeting of the Bootmakers of Toronto, and was rewarded by a call from long-time Bootmaker (and Baker Street Irregular) David Skene-Melvin: "Now you are officially a son of a bitch!" <br />
<br />
But the aforesaid page 59 lists four people who were inducted into Hounds membership at the 1981 dinner, and none of them is me. The historian also refers to "certificates", and if my loot from that evening included a certificate of any kind, I certainly don't know where it is. From which I conclude that my "honorary" status didn't really make me a Hound, and that's a <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">trifle</a> embarrassing, since I have been claiming ever since that I was one.<br />
<br />
But who knows? Maybe some year soon, I'll get back to Chicago on the auspicious October night, and betake myself to the annual dinner of the Hounds, and we'll see if they let me in.<br />

In 1922, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself wrote a Sherlock Holmes parody. Until that time, he had suffered (gladly or not is open for debate) at the hands of parodists who created their own versions of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in stories, comics, plays and more.<br />
<br />
But Conan Doyle's short story "<a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/ref/watson-trick-manuscript.htm">How Watson Learned the Trick</a>" was a unique addition to the oeuvre in that it was created specifically for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Mary%27s_Dolls%27_House">Queen Mary's Dolls House</a> — a project that called for top artists and craftsmen to contribute to the building of and possessions within a doll house for Queen Mary, wife of George V. Conan Doyle wrote the 503-word story, taking up 34 pages, which was bound into a tiny volume for the bookshelf of the doll house, measuring 1.5 inches high by 1.25 inches wide.<br />
<br />
The "trick" Watson supposedly learned was Holmes's methods of observation and inference, which he put to work, only to have Holmes bat down his every assumption. The 75th anniversary of a Sherlockian organization is a fine time to reflect on its history. So we did just that with Don Terras, BSI ("The Politician, the Lighthouse, and the Trained Cormorant") from his unique perch near an actual lighthouse.<br />
<br />
The Hounds of the Baskerville (sic) has its roots in Chicago, thanks to one of the "Holy Three" of early Sherlockian giants, Vincent Starrett. There are about a score of other groups in and around Chicagoland, and Don takes us on a brief tour of them, as well as the storied history of the Hounds.<br />
<br />
