Smith, editor of <i><a href="https://ihose.co/BSJ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, Esther Longfellow wrote about "The Distaff Side of Baker Street":</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Dr. Watson would have us think Mr. Sherlock Holmes was indifferent to the charms of women, and that he had never been married. In support of his contention he declares, "he never spoke of the softer emotions, save with a give and a sneer." It would never occur to the unsubtle Watson that those trenchant words and that scoffing manner might hide a wounded, humiliated heart. Wold Mr. Sherlock Holmes be, then, the first proud man who endeavored to conceal his hurt under a mask of coldness and contempt of what had caused it? Only once did the mask slip — and Sherlock Holmes narrowly escaped becoming "the argument of his own scorn" — when he met <i>The</i> Woman. He has sprung to life from the stage and screen through the magic of William Gillette, Eille Norwood, Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, and Benedict Cumberbatch.</p><p>But James Macaluso has made a world where Sherlock Holmes is universally relatable: through the <b>Re-Imagined Sherlock Holmes</b> in LEGO building bricks.</p><p>His imagination and ingenuity have combined to transform some of Sidney Paget's iconic illustrations into LEGO scenes that are remarkably faithful to the original. How did he do it? This perfect reasoning machine with a logical constitution seems impervious to behavior that required an apology.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And yet, there were a number of times when we find Sherlock Holmes apologizing for his behavior in the canon. Some range from simple social politeness, while others were more serious.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Watson conveys his new roommate's sensitivity to intruding upon the good doctor's space in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, with “He always apologized to me for putting me to this inconvenience.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">During the lead-up to the events of "The Final Problem," Holmes makes his way to Watson's home, saying, </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I must apologize for calling so late, and I must further beg you to be so unconventional as to allow me to leave your house presently by scrambling over your back garden wall.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "Black Peter," we find Holmes attempting to make Inspector Hopkins feel more comfortable:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I must really apologize, Hopkins,” said Sherlock Holmes; “I fear that the scrambled eggs are cold. However, you will enjoy the rest of your breakfast all the better, will you not, for the thought that you have brought your case to a triumphant conclusion.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Holmes is similarly concerned with his social graces in "The Creeping Man":</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“We must apologize for having intruded upon you, Professor Coram, and I promise that we won’t disturb you until after lunch.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But the most heartfelt we find Holmes was in "The Devil's Foot," after he and Watson held their experimental hallucinatory investigation, when we find Holmes clearly affected:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I owe you both my thanks and an apology. It was an unjustifiable experiment even for one’s self, and doubly so for a friend. He spent two years there then went to work in stock companies starting with the “weekly rep” — small touring companies that rehearsed and performed a new play each week. </p><p>Whitehead made his professional debut in 1956, and within two years was signed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. From there, he expanded into production and direction.</p><p>In 1961 With Doric Wilson, he produced <i>And He Made A Her</i>, Wilson's first play to be brought to the stage. Whitehead also directed and starred in this production at the off-off-Broadway venue Caffe Cino. </p><p>He made his Broadway debut in <i>The Affair</i> in 1962, after appearing on stage in Canada and TV productions. His Broadway work would not go unnoticed, as he would eventually be nominated for a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Pellinore in the 1980 revival of <i>Camelot</i>.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“the ‘Ragged Shaw’” [PRIO]</h3><p>Beyond his work on the main stage, Whitehead threw himself into repertory work. From 1966 – 1977 he was the Artistic Director of the <a href="https://www.shawfest.com/" target="_blank">Shaw Festival</a>, the second-largest repertory theatre in North America. The program is as follows (all times are BST):</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Ross Davies and Mark Jones – 26 June @ 7pm</h3><h4 style="text-align: left;"><b><i>Arthur Conan Doyle and the Adventure of the Gaiola Malediction</i></b></h4><p>In April/May, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vacations on his relatives' tiny paradise of an island estate (Gaiola) off the port of Naples, Italy, where he meets an Italian inventor, who claims to have automated the process of duplicating of sculptures. Conan Doyle buys the English rights to the patented machinery, partners with a colourful sculptor-contractor named W.G. Jones who turns out to be both dishonest and difficult to deal with (not quite a grifter, but pretty close!). </p><p>The whole thing turns into a business nightmare, but not before the plan and Conan Doyle's business (both ultimately unsuccessful) get widespread attention in the news media on both sides of the Atlantic. By June 1905, the madcap adventure is over.</p><p>There are many nifty visuals, and many interesting words in both the news coverage and the private correspondence (including some pretty clearly direct connections to a couple of the Sherlock Holmes stories). Leilehua Yuen's introductory tale of Kamalka Holmes and Fevronia Watkins was a delight with the desire to read more stories. Thankfully, the recently released <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/3oRBkiC" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Ka Pōhaku Makamae: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle or The Adventure of the Christmas Goose</i></a></strong> is also a delight and a worthy follow-up to Ms. Yuen's first book.</div><div><br /> Taking its inspiration from the canonical story “<a href="https://sherlock-holm.es/stories/pdf/a4/1-sided/blue.pdf">The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle</a>,” <b><i>K</i></b><strong><i>a Pōhaku Makamae</i> </strong>provides a great holiday-themed Holmesian pastiche that provides a rich and unique setting. </div><div><br /></div><div>Intended to be the third in a series, <strong><i>Ka Pōhaku Makamae</i> </strong>has a great mix of hope and melancholy in telling its tale. In addition to a character list, <strong><i>Ka Pōhaku Makamae</i> </strong>contains several appendices which include a glossary, an essay on historical context, and a list of Scottish Christmas recipes reflecting Fevronia Watkin's background. These appendices provide a great reading experience on their own as they serve as the foundation of the book's world-building. It also fosters the holiday-themed spirit within the story, providing some extra benefits to an already great story.</div><div>  <br /> <strong><a href="https://amzn.to/3oRBkiC" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Ka Pōhaku Makamae - The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle or The Adventure of the Christmas Goose</i></a></strong> is a must-read for any Sherlockian. The second set of stories was published in England in December 1893 and in the United States in September 1894 as <i><a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/The_Memoirs_of_Sherlock_Holmes" target="_blank">The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But there was a distinct difference between these two first editions: the British version omitted the story "The Cardboard Box." Subsequent American editions also omitted it. The story later appeared in the collection called <i>His Last Bow</i> in 1917.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's not entirely clear why it was omitted, although it was seemingly done at the request of Arthur Conan Doyle. According to Christopher Roden, BSI ("Sir Henry Baskerville") in the introduction to <i>The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</i> in <i>The Oxford Sherlock Holmes</i> edition:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">"ACD himself appears to have offered differing excuses: that it was out of place in a collection designed for boys; that it was more sensational than he cared for; and that it was a weak story. Whether one can conisder a collection of stories which had appeared in the <i>Strand </i>as being intended for boys' consumption is open to debate...'The Carboard Box' is clearly not a weak story, and Conan Doyle's own regard for its opening paragraphs, which he transposed into 'The Resident Patient,' seems to refute his statement. One is led to the conclusion, therefore, that something of which we are unaware, or can only speculate upon, happened in Conan Doyle's life between the time the story appeared in the <i>Strand</i> and the time the collection was published in book form."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Adultery and murder, both at the center of "The Cardboard Box," are motives that other Sherlock Holmes stories already contained.
