Andrew Page ("Lord Saltire") died in New Jersey on May 10, 2013 at the age of 60.

He attended the Bronx High school of Science and Columbia University and taught high school English. In the mid-80's he took a sabbatical from teaching high school English and spent six months living in a Zen Buddhist monastery. He then went on to earn BS and MA degrees in mathematics and became a professor of math at a community college in New Jersey.<br />

Andy enjoyed playing jazz bass guitar and eventually did some back-up playing for B.B. King, who was one of his idols.<br />
<br />
He first became interested in Sherlock Holmes during his high school years prompted by watching the Basil Rathbone films. During the summer between his junior and senior years he read the entire Canon. His enthusiasm for all things Sherlockian was an all-consuming passion.<br />
<br />
Dozens of junior scion societies were formed during the late '60's and early 70's and "seasoned" Sherlockians served in advisory roles. In 1971 Andy formed the Priory School of NY as an adjunct to the Baker Street Pageboys, and ran the group as "Lord Saltire." Advisor Steve Clarkson called him "Lord Saltine."<br />
<br />
He was the editor, and publisher of <i>The Holmesian Observer</i>, which was run off on a mimeograph machine. He had six articles published in <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i> between 1971-1975 and wrote two stand-alone monographs -- A Canonical Handbook and The Priory Papers: A Study in Examination. He also corresponded with other Sherlockians on a grand scale. His enthusiasm was boundless.<br />
<br />
In 1973 three groups merged: Musgrave Ritualists Beta, the Three Students Plus, and The Priory School. This new group, co-founded by Bruce Kennedy, Bill Walsh, and Andy Page was named <a href="http://3garridebs.homestead.com/" target="_blank">The Three Garridebs</a>, which continues to thrive.<br />
<br />
The junior Sherlockian movement was the subject of <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/christmasannuals.html" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual</a></i> in 2003, and Andy Page was featured in its pages.<br />
<br />
He attended only two or three <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">BSI Dinners</a>. He got sick during the cocktail hour at the 1974 dinner and left, thereby missing his investiture award. By 1977 he had completely dropped from the Sherlockian scene focusing instead on teaching.<br />
<br />
Andy Page was invested into The Baker Street Irregulars in 1974 as "Lord Saltire."<br />

At this point it's almost silly to assume that you haven't yet seen <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1tBkRdN" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock</a></i> from BBC One and PBS Masterpiece Mystery. <a href="https://www.edfringe.com/" target="_blank">The Fringe Festival</a> in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the world's largest arts festival with over 45,000 performances and more than 3000 shows packed into almost 300 venues across the city each year in August. The Fringe is open to all: anyone can perform and everyone does - from students to superstars.<br />

Since Edinburgh was the birthplace of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes is the world’s most famous literary detective, you might think that the Fringe could play host to all sorts of Sherlockian events – and you would be correct.<br />

This year saw lectures about ACD at the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre, Edinburgh Medical Detectives featuring Dr. Joseph Bell, the inspiration for Holmes, two different productions of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, and even a Forensic Mind Reader who promised to deduce personal information about you <i>a la </i>Sherlock. Besides the scheduled Fringe events the National Library of Scotland has the original manuscripts of <i>The Illustrious Client</i>, and Doyle’s first short ghost story <i>The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe</i>, written possibly in 1877 or 1878, plus select ACD correspondence. And across from the Conan Doyle Pub on Picardy Place there is a statue of Holmes commemorating the birthplace of <strike>his author</strike>  Watson’s literary agent, Doyle.<br />

But this year’s Fringe premiered <i><a href="https://www.pleasance.co.uk/event/potted-sherlock" target="_blank">Potted Sherlock</a></i> – all sixty stories told in a fast moving seventy minute comedic production of farce, word play, sight gags, pop culture references, frantic costume changes, seltzer bottle slapstick, skits and songs. The longer skits focus on the <i>Hound</i> (hoooooowwwwwwlllll), <i>The Sign of Four</i>, "The Speckled Band" and <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> with appearances of the demi-puppet Moriarty at inopportune times.  The family-friendly show glosses over Holmes's use of a seven-percent solution and manages to condense 21 stories to a few lines each in a musical number parodying Billy Joel’s <i>We Didn’t Start the Fire</i>:<br />

I attended <i>Potted Sherlock</i> twice – it was that much fun and the lines flew by so quickly that I wanted a second opportunity to try to catch them all (and discovered that some of those <i>ad lib</i>s were in name only and worked because of clever scripting and the performers’ great timing). Dan Clarkson, one of the authors, played Holmes, Watson, Moriarty and whoever-else-was-needed. His longtime partner, Jeff Turner, and Lizzie Wort, an old classmate of Dan’s from Bretton Hall, University of Leeds, also madly traded deerstalker, pipe and bowler as required as the three alternately played Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson and also whoever-else-was-needed. The enthusiasm they brought to this comic re-telling of the Canon was infectious and the hammy asides Dan made to the audience created a warm rapport with young and old.<br />
<br />
<i>Potted Sherlock</i> follows the award winning <i>Potted Potter</i>, all seven Harry Potter books told in seventy minutes, which debuted in 2006, had five sold-out Fringe seasons, five sold-out London runs, extensive United Kingdom and international tours prior to its critically-acclaimed US premiere at the Little Shubert Theater in New York City in 2012. <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be opening in London’s West End at Christmas time. Let us hope that the troupe brings their talent to NYC once again.<br />

I was fortunate enough to be able to interview the writers, Dan Clarkson and his brother Tom, after one of the performances. Before seeing the show and meeting them I was a bit cynical about how they came to write a comedic show about Holmes and Watson. The Harry Potter series, much loved as the stories are, was complete and <i>Potted Potter</i> had run its course. With the great entertainment media interest in Holmes the last few years, I initially thought that they might be just jumping on a bandwagon.<br />

I quickly discovered that these two brothers are true Holmes fanboys – the show was created from the heart, with their love and admiration for the stories showing through the on-stage shenanigans. In fact, when they learned that I was a BSI member, they said they were nervous about hearing from a Sherlockian expert ("My blushes, Watson!"), asking if I thought they were being faithful to the stories. Dan told of reading the tales growing up and even arguing with a teacher that the most venomous snake in the world was the Indian swamp adder – Sherlock Holmes said it was so!<br />
<br />
The two of them wrote a few skits making fun of some of the inconsistencies (?!) in their favorite stories when Dan’s producer suggested doing all 60 stories in a Potted version. They welcomed the challenge and began researching and writing.They spent weeks re-watching the Granada Jeremy Brett series and Basil Rathbone movies and re-reading the stories.They also spent a day or two in Dartmoor to experience the gloomy atmosphere as they were writing the script. Despite the silliness inherent in the show, I think their love for Holmes and Watson comes through clearly.<br />
<br />
As popular and successful as <i>Potted Potter</i> was, I predict that <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be even more popular.  If you are fortunate enough to be in London this Christmas season, do not miss it. As soon as I learn of its US debut I will be purchasing my ticket!<br />

There is one Sherlock Holmes film that legendary in its heritage: the 1916 <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0007338/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes</a></i> starring none other than <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gillette" target="_blank">William Gillette</a> (1853 - 1937). This film is significant because it has long been lost. </div>

Gillette asked for and received permission from Arthur Conan Doyle to adapt material and use the character for a play in 1899. And from that time until the early 1930s, he played the role some 1,300 times. And yet the 1916 film is the only record that was made of Gillette's performance in the title role that dominated so much of his career.</div>

But it was the Chicago headquarters that was responsible for the very first American Sherlock Holmes film with Gillette reprising his immensely popular role. The plot takes inspiration from <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, "A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Copper Beeches" and "The Final Problem" and involves Sherlock Holmes being consulted by a man who has a connection to the royal family. He wants to retrieve letters that he wrote to Alice Faulkner's sister. Alice intends to use the letters to blackmail him, and Alice is being held captive by a couple in the power of Professor Moriarty.</div>

The film will be restored for viewing by European and American audiences, under the supervision of film restorer and SFSFF Board President Robert Byrne, who said, "It's an amazing privilege to work with these reels that have been lost for generations. <b>RB:</b> In prior years we have partnered with the Cinematheque Francaise to restore two titles from their collection: THE HALF-BREED (1916) and THE GOOD BAD MAN (1916). We were very fortunate that when the materials for SHERLOCK HOLMES were identified earlier this year that the Cinematheque contacted us with the idea that we would work together on this project. We are thrilled and deeply honored to be working on them on this amazing project.<br />

<b>IHOSE:</b> <i>What's the significance of such a discovery?</i></div>

<b>RB:</b> William Gillette’s SHERLOCK HOLMES has been sought for generations as one of the most important “lost” films of the silent era. To have these materials come to light, and in complete form, seems almost miraculous. <br />

<b>RB:</b> There is a time for everything. Apparently Destiny decided that it was time for SHERLOCK HOLMES to return just in time for the film’s 100th anniversary.<br />

<b>IHOSE:</b> <i>Tell us more about the restoration process.</i> </div>

<b>RB:</b> The Cinematheque Franciase and SF Silent Film Festival are collaborating on a complete restoration of the film, a project that has already been in progress since early summer. The restoration will include image repair and re-creation of the original color tinting. The final result will be new 35mm film preservation elements that will be preserved at the Cinematheque Franciase, and new 35mm film prints for theatrical exhibition. We will also create Digital Cinema Packages (DCP) for use in venues that do not support variable-speed 35mm projection.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>IHOSE:</b> <i>Did we learn anything about the film that wasn't previously known?</i><br />
<b>RB:</b> We are learning that it is a very good film! What a disappointment it would have been to have discovered the holy grail only to find that the acting was hammy and the settings were cheap. Quite the contrary! I predict that audiences are going to be mesmerized with the final result.<br />

Sherlock Holmes has a rich history on radio, beginning in the 1930s and running clear through to the 2010s. From William Gillette to Basil Rathbone, Cedric Hardwicke to John Gielgud, and Carleton Hobbs to Roger Rees.<br />
<br />
But there is one production that stands heads and shoulders above the rest. The BBC Radio 4 series starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams (<a href="https://amzn.to/2ZfyLYP" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon</a>) managed to do what no other production had done before it: to dramatize all 60 Sherlock Holmes with the same principal cast members.<br />

Yesterday, Deborah Vivien Cavendish, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-29348946" target="_blank">passed away</a>, aged 94. She was the public face of <a href="http://www.chatsworth.org/" target="_blank">Chatsworth</a>, the grand estate that her late husband, the 11th Duke of Devonshire inherited upon the death of his father in 1950. "Debo" took on an active role in restoration of the house, as well as running its gardens and other commercial operations that gave both the public and entertainment media access to the site.<br />
<br />
She called herself a housewife, but oh what a house it was!<br />
<br />
Yet it is not the Dowager Duchess, but <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chatsworth_House" target="_blank">Chatsworth House</a> itself that compelled us to cover what would otherwise seem like a non-Sherlock Holmes-related news event. If you're not familiar with the name of the grand edifice, perhaps you'll recognize it from its façade and view over the bridge:<br />

Another item worth noting is that a paper was presented at a meeting of <a href="http://www.amateurmendicantsociety.org/2012/10/fall-meeting-report.html" target="_blank">the Amateur Mendicant Society of Detroit two years ago</a>, positing that the 6th Duke of Holdernesse was modeled on the 8th Duke of Devonshire, whose home was Chatsworth House.<br />

As a kid, around the same time I began reading the Sherlock Holmes canon, I was also a pretty big fan of comic books.  These were the days (the late 70s and early 80s) when the average price of a comic book was about 30 cents, and we used to get marked down comics at the local five-and-dime for ten cents.  Back in those days, one of my favorite types of comic books were the ones that featured "crossovers": <i>The Brave & the Bold</i>, for example, which always featured Batman teaming up with another hero; or one of my other favorites, a DC/Marvel collaboration that featured Spiderman and Superman teaming up against the Incredible Hulk. (In fact, Batman even teamed up with a 135-year-old Sherlock Holmes in <a href="http://crossover.bureau42.com/zbatmanholmes.html">Detective Comics #572</a>.)<br />
<br />
But those crossovers are pretty small potatoes when compared to the Wold Newton Universe, a massive crossover concept developed by science fiction author Philip José Farmer.  Farmer, who hailed from Peoria, IL (very close to my hometown), wrote many novels that featured collaborations and connections among a host of famous literary characters, including but not limited to: Tarzan, Doc Savage, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Lord Peter Wimsey, Solomon Kane, Arsène Lupin, and of course, Sherlock Holmes.  The basic idea presented by Farmer in some of his novels, beginning with <i>Tarzan Alive</i> in 1972, was that a mysterious meteorite fell to earth near Wold Newton in Yorkshire in the year 1795, and that radiation from the impact caused genetic mutations in the occupants of a nearby coach.  The descendants of these travelers were, according to Farmer, some of the famous fictional characters mentioned above.<br />
<br />
The Wold Newton Universe, as it was dubbed by Win Scott Eckert, is not limited to Farmer's work: Eckert and other fans of Farmer's work have greatly expanded the Wold Newton mythology to a host of other fictional characters.  The development of the Wold Newton Universe is not unlike the "great game" that is so popular with Sherlockians around the world. Indeed, Mr. Farmer, like William S. Baring-Gould and various other Sherlockians, treated Holmes and Lord Greystoke and others as if they were real people whose stories were deliberately fictionalized by Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs, et al.<br />

I wish I could report that Philip José Farmer was as skilled at writing further adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Lord Greystoke as were the authors to whose work he paid tribute.  But sadly, I have read one of the novels that teamed up Tarzan with Holmes and Watson, <i>The Adventure of the Peerless Peer</i> (1974). I found it to be an absolutely painful read, nothing like either Doyle's or Burroughs's work.  Holmes in particular is presented as pompous ass, for the most part.  Lord Greystoke fares a bit better, but not very well.  And Watson is an absolute bumbling oaf in the book. Still, there is something about the <b>idea </b>of the Wold Newton Universe that appeals to my twelve year old, comic book-reading self.<br />

Brainy is the new sexy. Any fan of Sherlock Holmes knows that, and certainly anyone who's seen the BBC's <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/episode-41-woman.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">latest iteration of Irene Adler</a> will repeat that phrase in a zombie-like state.<br />

So it should be no surprise to see references that connect The Big Bang Theory to the great detective. Earlier this year, <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/alexr31/10-ways-sherlock-and-sheldon-cooper-are-the-exact-56zy" target="_blank">Buzzfeed made a comparison</a> between Dr. Sheldon Cooper and the BBC's version of Sherlock Holmes.<br />

Last night on the season premiere of <i>The Big Bang Theory</i>, we discovered that physicist Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons), has concluded his cross-country railway trip after all of his possessions were stolen from his sleeper car compartment. He is found pantsless, wandering the train station, when he is taken into custody by the local police.<br />

Every Sherlock Holmes event has its own character, its own appeal to those of us "playing the game." From Gillette to Brett brings us Holmes in the visual and audio media, from radio drama to classic black and white film to modern adaptations and interpretations on the small (television) and the smaller screen (computer). While maintaining its unique character, this event also offers something near and dear to the heart of every Sherlockian; in the spirit of the Canonical Holmes and Watson, From Gillette to Brett celebrates friendship. Though the weekend was filled with classic films and fascinating presentations, under "Important Things to Know" in the weekend’s program was the following:<br />

There was a lot of visiting going on over the weekend. People who only knew each other from Facebook, Tumblr, or Sherlockian blogs were able to meet in person. Those who live far apart had a chance to see each other and catch up on each other’s lives. In order to keep things running smoothly at the jam-packed event, the brilliant organizers, Steven Doyle, BSI, and Mark Gagen, BSI, drew names for door prizes at the beginning of each segment of Saturday’s symposium. The prizes were awarded only to those in their seats at the time of the drawing, guaranteeing that most attendees would be in place for the next speaker.<br />
<br />
The event began on the lovely campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, at the Lilly Library’s rare book, manuscript, and special collections library. The group was deftly divided into two sections to attend a workshop on the Library’s collection of unique bound books, led by James Canary, Head of Conservation, as well as a session on rare manuscripts with Library Director, Joel Silver. Among the rare manuscripts that were available for viewing were a page of the New Testament of the Gutenberg Bible, the First Folio of Shakespeare, a rare copy of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Tamerlane,” as well as an issue of “Beeton's Christmas Annual” of 1887, which contained “A Study in Scarlet,” and a fragment of a manuscript by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—Holmes’s note to Watson left at the top of the Reichenbach Falls in “The Final Problem.” On display in the Library were other works by Conan Doyle as well.</div>

Others have written about the course of the weekend, so there is little need for a detailed rehash of the schedule. Some of the highlights of From Gillette to Brett IV include:<br />

<li>A lovely reception where everyone mingled and enjoyed each other’s company.</li>
<li>Viewing <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> (2014 is its 75th Anniversary) on a huge movie screen in the IU Cinema. Never has the Basil Rathbone original been as captivating as on the big screen; the hound itself was frightening in a way it never was on a television screen.</li>
<li>First speaker on Saturday was Bonnie MacBird, author, actor, and screenwriter, who brought us into the world of screenwriting and how television scripts differ from film scripts. We learned how BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> is more similar to a film than a television show.</li>
<li>Kristina Manente, founder of the Baker Street Babes podcast, shared the fascinating world of internet Sherlockian fandom.</li>
<li>Author and playwright, David Stuart Davies, showed how "playing the game" can and should be fun through humorous glimpses of Canon, film, and television.</li>
<li>Bert Coules, head writer for the BBC’s Clive Merrison Sherlock Holmes radio drama, shared the history of British radio adaptations of the stories.</li>
<li>British film and television producer and director, Paul Annett, talked about his time at the helm of the first season of the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, and his working relationship and friendship with Jeremy Brett. Mr. Annett shared how he guided the actor in the early days of the ground-breaking series, and showed some silent screen tests with Brett and David Burke as they experimented with facial expressions and reactions for their characters.</li>

The weekend concluded with a lovely banquet and a tribute to the late Michael Hoey, who had been on the original program but who passed away just weeks earlier. Following the banquet was yet one more delightful film, another 75th Anniversary celebrant, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” with the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce team, as well as the luminous Ida Lupino. The film was introduced by film studies scholar, Professor James Naremore.<br />
<br />
Along with the many planned events, the weekend was filled with small gatherings of Sherlockians in local pubs and restaurants, and more than a few celebrated their time together as the legendary John Bennett Shaw’s "two [or more] Sherlockians and a bottle." <br />
<br />
From Gillette to Brett IV was a remarkable achievement (as were its three predecessors) by Messrs. Doyle and Gagen of <a href="http://wessexpress.com/" target="_blank">Wessex Press</a>, bringing together fans of the Canon from all walks of life, many generations, different parts of the world, and differing opinions on just who is "the perfect Holmes." From Gillette to Norwood to Wilmer to Howard to Rathbone to Brett to Downey, Jr. to Cumberbatch to Miller; nearly everyone’s favorite made an appearance or was given a mention at the podium or in a lively discussion. <br />
<br />
With apologies to Samuel Johnson, "…when a man or woman is tired of Holmes, they are tired of life; for there is in Holmes all that life can afford."<br />
<br />
From Gillette to Brett IV offered more than any Sherlockian heart could possibly desire.<br />

Playwright Steven Dietz was commissioned by the Arizona Theatre Company in 2005 to write a Sherlockian play; the result was <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. </i>The world premier of <i>Sherlock Holmes </i>was produced in 2006 by the Arizona Theatre Company and the play was awarded an <a href="http://www.playbill.com/news/article/dietzs-sherlock-holmes-wins-2007-edgar-award-for-best-mystery-play" target="_blank">Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Play in 2007</a>. My wife and I were fortunate enough to attend the Ethington Theatre's recent production of the play. The Ethington Theatre is a small, intimate venue on the campus of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.<br />

Adapted from the 1899 play by William Gillette and Conan Doyle, Dietz's <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>retains some of the same plot points as the Gillette play while at the same time repackaging them with some new elements. Dietz's adaptation is a clever blending together of the major plots from <i>A Scandal in Bohemia</i> and <i>The Final Problem</i>, but unlike the Gillette script Dietz keeps the name of Irene Adler for the female lead character.<br />
<br />
<i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>is at heart still a mystery/adventure story, but Dietz also incorporates elements of romance and humor involving the characters of Holmes and Watson, which are themes that are not typically as prominent in the Canon. Holmes is portrayed as somewhat of a smug, condescending character who enjoys a joke at Watson's expense. As for the Doctor, he comes across as a bit of a bumbling oaf. It doesn't ruin his character, but that aspect of the Watson persona is certainly played up more than is typical. One of the most notable departures from the Canon is Holmes' romantic involvement with Irene Adler.<br />

The story is narrated throughout by Doctor Watson, as one would expect, and chronicles the tale of the scandal involving the King of Bohemia and the desperately sought after photograph of the king and Miss Adler. The photograph and the character of Godfrey Norton play a much larger part in the grand scheme of this adaptation than in <i>A Scandal in Bohemia. </i>After several attempts at retrieval of the photograph and just as many run ins with Professor Moriarty and his minions, the play culminates in that iconic struggle at Reichenbach Falls.<br />

<i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>is a masterful meshing of the plots from two of the most well known stories from the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short stories. The audience is also presented with an interesting perspective on Holmes' two rivals; the evil Moriarty and the beautiful Irene Adler. Each of them outwit Holmes in various ways, but yet the contrast between their characters is very striking.<br />
<br />
Steven Dietz does a fine job of marrying the quintessence of the Holmes and Watson characters with a few new characteristics resulting in a play which provides a couple of hours that are quite entertaining. And while Canonical purists may not appreciate <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>most folks will find it quite enjoyable; even those who are not hard-core Holmes fans.<br />

Up next was Bert Coules, the English writer and producer-director who served as Radio Dramatist for the BBC Sherlock Holmes starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams, the only two actors in any medium to appear as Holmes and Watson in all 60 canonical stories. Coules is the author of <i>221 BBC</i>, published by Gasogene Books, a volume that takes the reader behind the scenes of the BBC series and includes a history of other radio adaptations of Holmes and Watson. </div>

Drawing from his vast knowledge, experience, and love of audio drama, Coules made an eloquent case for the power and profundity of audio dramatizations of the Canon. He began with the pivotal year 1930, in which Conan Doyle died; Holmes made his radio debut; and NBC broadcast Edith Meiser's series of adaptations. Having noted the 1943 version of "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," starring the great Arthur Wontner, Coules then "put a bit of volcano in it" by playing for conference-goers several clips of rare broadcasts. Highlights included a sample of "The Speckled Band," starring Cedric Hardwicke (father of Edward) as Holmes, and another of William Gillette himself, in a radio version of his celebrated hit, <i>Sherlock Holmes</i>, a play which had earlier been represented in David Stuart Davies' lecture, via an excerpt from the HBO revival starring Frank Langella.<br />
<br />
Coules laid down the practical rules for writing good audio drama. His example of the kind of writing that has failed to capitalize on the evocative power of sound: "My word, Virginia, that's a strange thing for an attractive 35-year-old brunette like you to say!" He concluded with a conference exclusive, a video clip of Merrison and Williams in the studio rehearsing "The Solitary Cyclist," that wowed the attendees. If you have not yet explored the work of Bert Coules, you owe it to yourself to do so.<br />

After a break, the conference reconvened for the screening of the definitive version of "A Scandal in Bohemia," the initial episode of the incomparable Granada Television series, starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and directed by the conference's next speaker, featured guest Paul Annett.<br />
<br />
Thirty years have passed since this little film first graced the television screen, and it was pleasant to note how well it has weathered the test of time. Brett and his first Watson, David Burke, are still superb; Wolf Kahler's King of Bohemia is still a lumbering mass of arrogance; Gayle Hunnicutt's elegant and striking Irene Adler is still the stuff that dreams are made of; and the thunderous applause when Holmes turns briskly away from the king's outstretched hand was gratifying, to say the least. Once the familiar strains of Patrick Gowers' score had played the closing credits off, Annett took center stage, where he was joined by the Wessex Press's own Steven Doyle.<br />
<br />
The interview that filled the next forty-five minutes was nothing short of glorious for fans of the classic series. Doyle's questions seemed to "anticipate all my wants" [SILV], and drew gem after gem from Annett's recollections of the all-important early days of the Granada series. One can only hope a recording or transcript of the interview may someday be made available, along with the unexpected thrill it featured: previously unseen footage of costume and makeup tests for Jeremy Brett and David Burke.<br />

In the last few minutes, Doyle opened the floor to questions, and the audience responded enthusiastically on topics from Jeremy Brett's use of facial tics to convey the action of Holmes' mental machinery, to Annett's experience directing <i>The Beast Must Die</i>, based on James Blish's outstanding short story "There Shall Be No Darkness," and starring Peter Cushing, Charles Gray, and Michael Gambon.<br />

Gambon's Professor Albus Dumbledore would have felt right at home in the Tudor Room of the Indiana Memorial Union for the banquet that followed; indeed, nothing but a banquet would have seemed appropriate after the Doyle/Annett show, and fortunately the feast was already scheduled. It was accompanied by a moving tribute to the late Michael A. Hoey, son of Rathbone's Inspector Lestrade, Dennis Hoey, and author of <i><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/10/episode-36-michael-hoey-and-fabulous.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and The Fabulous Faces: The Universal Pictures Repetory Company</a></i>.<br />
<br />
Conference-goers mingled and made merry until the time had come for a return stroll to the IU Cinema for the screening of <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> (1939), the second outing of Rathbone and Bruce, a ripping yarn bolstered by the chilling Professor Moriarty of George Zucco and a fine damsel-in-distress turn by the always-reliable Ida Lupino.<br />
<br />
In introducing the film and advocating on behalf of the Rathbone-Bruce series, Professor James Naremore did a top-notch job, as one would expect from a film scholar who has received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and who has recorded DVD commentaries for not one, but two, films of Orson Welles (<i>Mr. Arkadin</i> and <i>Touch of Evil</i>). <i>The Adventures</i> went over with the audience every bit as well as <i>The Hound</i> had done, and attendees dispersed afterward to various late-night gatherings and after-parties; some were even reported to have gone to bed.<br />

The conference program declared:<br />

"Half the fun of events like From Gillette to Brett IV is visiting with distant friends or shopping for Sherlockian treasure. With that in mind, over four hours of free time… have been built into the day." </blockquote>
On the one hand, the organizers were precisely correct: It is at least half the fun. On the other hand, they seem to have erred: The free time felt more like four minutes! Or perhaps it's a subjective problem; time does have a tendency to fly when one is breakfasting with Ray Betzner (<a href="http://vincentstarrett.com/">vincentstarrett.com</a>) at the Runcible Spoon, home of some of the crispiest bacon north of Kentucky; likewise, hours can turn to minutes when one lunches with Henry Boote at a café that makes onion rings fit to write grandma about, then walks it off by dropping in on the pub where Hoagy Carmichael wrote "Stardust."<br />
<br />
Where does the break time go when spent over coffee with the <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Babes</a>' Ashley Polasek and <a href="http://221bcon.com/" target="_blank">221B Con</a>'s Crystal Noll? Back at the Lilly Library, a certain gracious lady and I were seated near each other when the Sacred Fragment of the Reichenbach letter was borne before us; it seemed we both felt as Booth Tarkington did, when he wrote to William Gillette: "I would rather see you play Sherlock Holmes than be a child again on Christmas morning." These are the moments when time slips away.<br />

On Sunday a closing brunch gave attendees a time to reflect and to enjoy one another's company as the event drew to a close. Some even tried to say goodbye while in the midst of comparing schedules to determine the place and time of their next Sherlockian meetings. But the interval between now and January seems blissfully short, so as Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes observed: "This time, we will say, 'Au revoir.'"<br />
