Almost certainly. And what about in the Canon itself?</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, the great Sherlockian John Bennett Shaw <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/08/john-bennett-shaw-and-terrible.html#.YsHR8HZKjb0" target="_blank">delivered a paper</a> at a dinner in 1971 along those lines. It was so racy that the editor of <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> (who was also the head of the BSI, and was still incensed from the talk at the dinner) refused to publish it.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>It was called “a most amusing talk…showing evidence of much research and truly specialized knowledge, but, unfortunately, unpublishable.” At least by the BSJ. But it did appear later that year <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/08/john-bennett-shaw-and-terrible.html#.YsHR8HZKjb0" target="_blank">in Bruce Kennedy's <i>Shades of Sherlock</i></a>.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Meanwhile, we'll see what the boys are snickering about at Baker Street Elementary...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; This is due to Watson's role, the story itself being counter to the literary agent's interest in the supernatural, and the timing of the release of the original story. After mourning Holmes's demise, this would have seemed a great gift. <br /><br />Jim Nelson's <a href="#"><i>A Man Named Baskerville</i></a> seeks to turn the narrative of the Hound on its ear by a clear assertion that Stapleton's father and by extension, he, are the real victims. For simplicity, the man named Baskerville, will be referred to as "Stapleton" in this review. <br /><br />Telling two detailed stories in parallel is a challenging undertaking, juggling the flow of multiple story lines. Long sections of expository narrative were used in Part II of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> or the journey back in time and location to which we are invited in Part 2 of <i>The Valley of Fear</i>. Instead, this book flips back and forth between the events after the story that we know, and "Stapleton's" dark origin story. <br /><br />One of the threads is memoirs that evolve from short-hand journal entries to a more formal memoir as Stapleton and the current story pick up steam. In the other thread, we follow Stapleton through several aliases and situations as he travels from South America to Central America to the north of England where is the headmaster of a school in Yorkshire. <br /><br />We track the events in his progress during his quest to exact revenge and obtain his true inheritance. The body count and swindled victims grew, as the original targets of revenge are joined by those who had grown suspicious or inconvenient. <br /><br />Not surprisingly, Stapleton told a story that put Sir Charles in a bad light. Rather than the published version of the Baskerville's story, Sir Charles' treatment of his young brother in this version is unfathomable. Then Stapleton dragged Sir Henry, Holmes and Watson into tha­­t same unflattering light. <br /><br />We most often see Holmes through the eyes of Watson, rarely though his own eyes ("The Blanched Soldier" and "The Lion's Mane") or, most rare, through a third person ("His Last Bow"). <br /><br />Sometimes we hear reports of how Holmes is viewed through a villain's eye, usually underestimating him or spouting erroneous assumptions such as Dr. Roylott's calling Holmes "the Scotland Yard jack-in-office" ("The Speckled Band"). <br /><br />But it is difficult to imagine a Victorian man dancing around a corpse. While this is offered as an unfiltered view, perhaps this is a clue to some of the distorted alternate versions of events offered by Stapleton. <br /><br />Not unlike the original telling, both stories hinge on the fact that Stapleton could have progressed in his schemes by impressing the members of the British elite with his accent and social engineering skills. This telling also hangs on the belief that the people around the moor knew everything, and that Holmes had either been fooled by them or was too incompetent to uncover the truth. <br /><br />It was a tad disappointing that there was so little attention to Laura Lyons. Given that there was more to their story together, the book does not expand on what we knew from the original canon. <br /><br />Threads of Stapleton's misogyny are woven through the "love and punishment" training approach that he uses for both animals and people. Sir Henry bargained for Beryl's hand as one would purchase livestock. <br /><br />In the Afterward, the author makes clear that "abusive violence on dogs is unacceptable." He entered the world at a time when Sherlock Holmes was making a name for himself in the <i>Strand Magazine</i>, specifically in "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches." Little did he or his parents realize that he would go on to become one of the most famous portrayers of Sherlock Holmes on the screen.<br /><br />He attended <a href="http://www.repton.org.uk/" target="_blank">Repton</a> from 1906 to 1910, and by the time he left school, he was convinced he wanted to make a life for himself in the theatre. After spending some time in local theatrical productions, he entered war service in 1916, where he continued to hone his acting skills, albeit as more of a stationary object. According to <a href="http://www.basilrathbone.net/biography/" target="_blank">BasilRathbone.net</a>, Rathbone told Edward R. Murrow in a 1957 interview:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="background-color: white;"> "I went to my commanding officer and I said that I thought we'd get a great deal more information from the enemy if we didn't fool around in the dark so much . . . and I asked him whether I could go out in daylight. I think he thought we were a little crazy. . . .  I said we'd go out camouflaged -- made up as trees -- with branches sticking out of our heads and arms . . . . We brought back an awful lot of information, and a few prisoners, too."</span></blockquote><br />Rathbone eventually moved from England to the United States, settling in New York in 1923 and then moving on to Hollywood in 1935. His <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001651/?ref_=tt_cl_t4" target="_blank">Hollywood years</a> brought him fame in <i>Captain Blood</i> and <i>The Adventures of Robin Hood</i>, where he became known as an able swordsman and a fine villain. His wife Ouida wrote a stage play, "Sherlock Holmes," in 1953, but it closed after poor reviews and only three performances. He made a handful of middle-rate movies in the 1960s, toured in the one-man play "An Evening with Basil Rathbone," and wrote his biography <i><a href="https://amzn.to/39iClsh" target="_blank">In and Out of Character</a></i>, which was published in 1962.<br /><br /><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_Rathbone" target="_blank">Basil Rathbone</a> died on July 21, 1967 at the age of 75. He is interred in <a href="http://www.basilrathbone.net/potpourri/ferncliff.htm" target="_blank">Ferncliff Cemetary</a> in Hartsdale, NY.<br /><br />While Holmes purists may find something to quibble about in the later 12 films of the 14-film series that Rathbone and Bruce made, it's clear that they continue to be accessible and popular. Every generation has its own Sherlock Holmes. But since the 1940s, it seems that every generation has been exposed to Rathbone's Holmes.<br /><br />We're pleased to reflect on that fact today, 130 years after Rathbone was born.<br /><br />--</div>

We've been featuring one of their strips every other Sunday since then.</div><div><br /></div><div>Over the years, we've become familiar with the younger versions of Holmes, Watson, and Stamford, as well as occasional appearances by Ignatius (Conan Doyle), Irene (Adler), William (Gillette), and others, including a couple of podcast hosts, and their antics at the school known as Baker Street Elementary</div><div><br /></div><div>They now mark their 400th strip from this delightful series that is housed in full on the website of <a href="http://www.dfw-sherlock.org/baker-street-elementary.html" target="_blank">The Crew of the Barque Lone Star</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Many comic strip writers churn out daily strips — undoubtedly a slog and a full-time job. But even to do this on a weekly basis shows dedication and creativity, and we're glad that these Sherlockians have both in addition to their knowledge of the Sherlock Holmes stories.</div><div><br /></div><div>We thank them for their wonderful contributions to not only our site, but to the world of Sherlock Holmes. Redmond, one of the more prolific Sherlockians of his generation. He is best known in many quarters for his two scholarly books — <i><a href="https://affiliates.abebooks.com/c/2670720/77416/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fkn%3DSherlock%2520Holmes%252C%2520a%2520Study%2520in%2520Sources%26sts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-topnav-_-Results%26ds%3D20" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes, a Study in Sources</a></i> and <i><a href="https://affiliates.abebooks.com/c/2670720/77416/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fkn%3DSherlock%2520Holmes%2520Among%2520the%2520Pirates%26sts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-topnav-_-Results" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Among the Pirates</a></i> — but he wrote much more as well, including articles in Canadian, British and American journals and newsletters over four decades.<div>  <br />I have been working lately to compile a bibliography of his writings, and then assemble an anthology to make some of the gems available to today's Sherlockians. I know I haven't found everything he wrote (and I never will), but there are at least 250 discrete items, from technical research to Sherlockian "grand game" speculation and some fragments of flippant verse: <br /><br /></div><div><blockquote>I suspect of Sherlockians very few<br /> Excepting John Clay (perhaps Merridew)<br />   Can tell at a glance<br />   At the knees of their pants<br /> A tired old limerick from a clerihew. </blockquote><br /><br /></div><div>That one was typewritten on a recycled catalogue card, and never published — just as his essay "The Case of the Builders Bodies", identifying some sources for the plot of "The Norwood Builder", apparently never saw print. Some day maybe it will, along with a sheaf of others. <br /><br /></div><div>Shortly after my father's death in 2014, I wrote <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/11/remembering-donald-redmond-bsi-2s.html#.YnfWFS0ZOxA" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a summary of his life and Sherlockian career</a> for I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere<br /><br />A chemistry graduate of Mount Allison University, he went on to study library science at McGill University and the University of Illinois, and worked in library administration in Nova Scotia, Ceylon, Turkey and Kansas (where we both caught the Sherlockian bug) before becoming chief librarian of Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, 1966-77. Railways, Meccano, and church administration and history were among his enthusiasms in addition to Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle.</div><div>  <br />He was admitted to the Baker Street Irregulars in 1969, with the title "Good Old Index" in recognition of his work as an indexer. A Two-Shilling Award from the BSI followed. </div><div><br /></div><div>His first major Sherlockian index, covering <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> from 1946 to 1969, appeared in 1970, and he continued to index the <i>BSJ</i>, with cumulations, until 2012. Other indexes followed, knocked out on a series of manual and then electric typewriters — he never had the slightest desire to touch a computer. </div><div><br /></div><div>And then there was <a href="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/books-video-music/specialized-collections/literature-genre-doyle.jsp" target="_blank">the Bigelow Index at the Toronto Reference Library</a>, an attempt to index the universe of Sherlockian literature, launched in the 1960s by S. Tupper Bigelow and carried on by my father as a volunteer.</div><div>  <br />The volume of words he knocked out on those typewriters was immense: those indexes and books, cards for the Bigelow Index, articles, verses, quizzes, and even one or two parodies, not to mention correspondence. </div><div><br /></div><div>To take just one example, in the late 1990s he was conducting what amounted to a monthly column for the <i>Baker Street Dispatch</i>, a newsletter out of Ohio. One of those columns took its title from a phrase in "The Musgrave Ritual": "Month After Month His Papers Accumulated." In it, my father described a little of his methods of indexing:</div><div>  <br /></div><blockquote><div>"The Sherlockian periodicals flow steadily into the mailbox, and when the in-tray is full, seldom before, I set to with index cards, thesaurus of Sherlockian subjects, and typewriter, to bring some semblance of order out of the Sherlockian Chaos. When the tray has been reduced so that the inward flow will not submerge my desk, I transfer the cards to the Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library (some 160 miles away) and the Sherlockiana itself (themselves?) to the file tray. There it further mellows until it too threatens to overflow, and I reluctantly set about to dispose of it somehow.</div><div>  <br />"Nominally the disposal is to a filing cabinet, alphabetized almost as arcanely as Jabez Wilson's volume of the <i>Britannica</i>, from Abbots to Architecture and on to the Van Herder Airguns (compare with the V entries in Holmes's own index) and the <i>Whitechapel Gazette</i> and the Wigmore Street Post Office. <br /><br />"But the filing cabinet is full. It is always full. It always has been full."</div></blockquote><div></div><div>  <br />So are the bookshelves, he added, especially when he had handfuls of newsletters converted into bound volumes. </div><div></div><blockquote><div>"I am not a successor to John Bennett Shaw; I know that what gathers is not a complete collection of Sherlockiana, and I have no interest in its being such. I could not afford to make it complete; the prices attached by dealers to items lacking in this collection could readily be attached to choice items for sale out of Windsor Castle.</div><div><br /></div><div>"But I think there is an eventual value to this collecting. How few are now and will in future be the collections which reflect, not the outstanding gems of the annals of Sherlock Holmes, but the ceaseless activity, energy and enthusiasm of the almost countless Sherlockian devotees, and societies of devotees, who are actively keeping green the Master's memory. <br /><br /></div><div>"There is too a real danger that the wheel will be endlessly re-invented, unless the endless bits of scholarship, the grains of knowledge carried by countless Sherlockian ants, are in some way collected and stored. There will always be a need for collections of papers, and for indexes to them."</div></blockquote><div></div><div>  <br />I have the filing cabinet now, though the Toronto library has its contents and will someday have all these manuscripts I have been wrangling. Martin Dakin’s <i>A Sherlock Holmes Commentary</i> is one of the more important contributions to Sherlockian scholarship. In it, he discussed the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes canon, plus two apocryphal tales.</p><p>But Dakin also acknowledged that he was probably missing the discovery of scholarship that had happened prior to his time. Bruce Harris, in his <i>Anticipations in D. Martin Dakin’s A Sherlock Holmes Commentary</i>, digs deeper into the older scholarship and has found earlier commentary on the points that interested Dakin.</p><p>This is a fine companion volume to a cornerstone of Sherlockian scholarship. And Bruce's journey there is a fascinating one.</p><p>The <b>Canonical Couplet</b> follows the interview: we give you two lines of poetry, and you need to identify which Sherlock Holmes story they represent.
