It is the first quality of a criminal investigator that he should see through a disguise.” [HOUN]</div></blockquote></div><div>The first quality. As in table stakes. The bare minimum. What you would expect from a professional consulting detective.</div><div><br /></div><div>And yet...</div><div><br /></div><div>In the very first novel, <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Sherlock Holmes is fooled by an actor who visited Baker Street in the costume of an old woman:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Old woman be damned!” said Sherlock Holmes, sharply. “We were the old women to be so taken in. It must have been a young man, and an active one, too, besides being an incomparable actor. The get-up was inimitable.”</div></blockquote></div><div>This wasn't a terribly confidence-inspiring performance by the young detective, so full of himself in front of Watson with his <i>Book of Life</i> ego and his you-have-been-in-Afghanistan-I-perceive smugness.</div><div><br /></div><div>And then, when he was introduced to readers of the <i>Strand Magazine</i> in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” once again we find the Sherlock Holmes fooled by a disguise, although this time it was a woman dressed as a man:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I’ve heard that voice before,” said Holmes, staring down the dimly lit street. “Now, I wonder who the deuce that could have been.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>There would be other disguises in the Sherlock Holmes stories — James Windibank as Hosmer Angel, Neville St. Claire as Hugh Boone, Arthur Pinner as Harry Pinner, Sir Robert Norberton as Lady Beatrice Falder — all of which Holmes is able to detect. So his statement in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> was consistent with the image he wished to present to the world.</div><div><div><blockquote>“What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence,” returned my companion, bitterly. “The question is, what can you make people believe that you have done.” [STUD]</blockquote></div></div><div><br /></div><div>While Holmes would have us believe that he could never be fooled by a disguise, we know the truth. Whelan, BSI (“Vincent Spaulding”), who served as “Wiggins,” or head of the Baker Street Irregulars, for 23 years.</p><p>We're still gathering our thoughts around this news, as it is as personal as it is profound. It was under Mike's leadership in 2001 that your editor received his investiture, <span style="text-align: center;">“</span>Corporal Henry Wood.<span style="text-align: center;">”</span></p><p>Mike was the second-longest serving head of the BSI (Julian Wolff served 26 years, from 1960-1986). And in his time, it is fair to say that he transformed the BSI. He approached it with a businessman's eye and acumen, delegating much of the responsibilities to eager volunteers. His accomplishments are legion.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“all they want is organisation<span style="text-align: center;">” [STUD]</span></h3><p>Mike squarely positioned the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> as a literary society, shaping its focus and giving the organization ten so-called exemplars that members should strive for:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Promote and nurture Grand Game scholarship</li><li>Diverse, exceptional, merit-based membership—not elitist </li><li>Kind, welcoming clubbability with joyful, whimsical environment </li><li>Altruistic volunteerism—giving more than you receive—“society above self” </li><li>Aspirational, not reactionary </li><li>Inherent modesty vs. taking oneself too seriously </li><li>Extremely high standards—reject “good enough” </li><li>Societal leadership fiscally responsible—sufficient funds maintained to
accomplish most, if not all, objectives </li><li>Societal and member Sherlockian charitable generosity </li><li>No politics and no contentious agendas </li></ul><p></p><p>Having such guiding principles and aspirations give any organization and its members the impetus to constantly challenge themselves to do better. And that's what Mike wanted.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I have been guilty of several monographs” [BRUC]</h3><p>Mike took what was once a side-interest of the BSI and turned it into a central focus: the small red-backed volumes that Edgar W. Smith (the BSI's Commissionaire from 1940-1960) published and that the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/history/" target="_blank">BSI Archival Series</a> echoed became the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/the-bsi-press/" target="_blank">BSI Press</a> under Mike's leadership.</p><p>The BSI Press became a powerhouse of a small press publisher, cranking out more than 60 volumes. From the BSI Archival Series that focus on the history of the organization to the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/international/" target="_blank">BSI Manuscript Series, BSI International Series</a>, and <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/professions/" target="_blank">BSI Professions Series</a>, Sherlockians worldwide were given a chance to read more deeply about Sherlock Holmes.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“a series of events” [DEVI]</h3><p>The famed <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">BSI Weekend</a> was always the centerpiece of the BSI's year, but Mike sought to extend the BSI's geographical presence beyond New York City. He tapped various members across the country to develop associated excursions every few years. Some of these included:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/09/episode-104-sherlockians-at-chautauqua.html" target="_blank">The Mind and Art of Sherlock Holmes</a> (Chautauqua, NY, 2016)</li><li>Sherlock Holmes: Behind the Canonical Screen (UCLA, 2012 )</li><li>A Tangled Skein – A Study in Scarlet Expedition (Salt Lake City, UT, 2008)</li><li>Murderland – The Valley of Fear Expedition (PA, 2004)</li></ul><p></p><p>Each of these had <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/event+books/" target="_blank">an accompanying publication</a> that captured the scholarship shared at the associated event.</p><p>At the BSI Weekend itself, Mike established the BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture, to kick off the events on Thursday evening. This event brought in an author to talk about their particular area of focus.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“for the sake of the trust” [MUSG]</h3><p>In addition to events and publications, Mike's crowning achievement was the establishment of the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Trust</a>. The BSI Trust is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose purpose is "to collect, preserve, and provide access to historical documents, correspondence, papers, photos, recordings, and memorabilia relating to the BSI and its members and friends."</p><p>As part of that mission, the Trust established the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/archive.html" target="_blank">BSI Archive</a> first at the Houghton Library at Harvard University, and then moved to the Lilly Library at Indiana University.</p><p>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere was at the opening celebration, "Building an Archive," and reported on it in <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose180">Episode 180</a>. He went everywhere, saw everything, and overheard everyone in his mission to keep green the Master's memory. </p><p>And while he was the first to admit that his role was one of a "benevolent dictator," he did more to empower individuals to contribute to the future of the BSI than anyone before. He rightly observed that he viewed his role as one of a steward, a temporary leader, on the evolution of the institution.</p><p>He had a succession plan, leaving Michael Kean, BSI (“General Gordon”), who had led the publications arm, in charge of the organization — a multi-year plan with plenty of coordination and collaboration. When he handed over the reins, Mike was confident in the direction and stewardship of the BSI under Michael Kean's leadership.</p><p><br /></p><p>Mike closed his final letter to the BSI membership:<br /></p><blockquote>“And so, dear fellow members, this is the last formal “Wiggins” letter I’ll be sending to the membership. It has been a great ride. My deepest thanks to Irregulars whose special support made my job easier and made me look better than I was. Special thanks to Mary Ann, my spouse of 43 years, who steadfastly supported me during my journey as Wiggins, and toiled in the BSI vineyard, the extent to which no one may ever fully realize. I’ve made many lifelong friends from all over the world in this Sherlockian universe of ours. What a job it has been, if you can call it a job… more, a joy. It actually was a grand privilege running the BSI, a literary society like none other.”</blockquote><p>We will miss Mike's presence, both in person and in spirit, at the BSI. Watson doesn't share everything with us, naturally — there must have been too many discussions to document.<div><br /></div><div>But Watson does give us a wonderful example from one summer evening's conversation that he says was all over the place:</div><div><blockquote><div>"[T]he conversation...had roamed in a desultory, spasmodic fashion from golf clubs to the causes of the change in the obliquity of the ecliptic, came round at last to the question of atavism and hereditary aptitudes. The point under discussion was, how far any singular gift in an individual was due to his ancestry and how far to his own early training."</div></blockquote><div>Ah, the old nature vs. nurture argument. Unsurprisingly, Sherlock Holmes gave credit to both his bloodline and his focused application of his studies. But given his admiration for and introduction of Mycroft, he makes it clear that he puts more weight on heredity.</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, heredity is at least a factor in the background of the character and actions of certain criminals he encountered.</div><div><br /></div><div>Consider the penchant for violence in the Roylott family, as relayed by Dr. Grimesby Roylott's stepdaughter, Helen Stoner in "The Speckled Band":</div><div><blockquote><div>"But a terrible change came over our stepfather about this time. Instead of making friends and exchanging visits with our neighbours, who had at first been overjoyed to see a Roylott of Stoke Moran back in the old family seat, he shut himself up in his house and seldom came out save to indulge in ferocious quarrels with whoever might cross his path. <b>Violence of temper approaching to mania has been hereditary in the men of the family</b>, and in my stepfather’s case it had, I believe, been intensified by his long residence in the tropics."</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Sherlock Holmes admired the intelligence of his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty, but acknowledged in "The Final Problem" that the professor fell victim to his genetics:</div><div><blockquote><div>"At the age of twenty-one he wrote a treatise upon the Binomial Theorem, which has had a European vogue. On the strength of it he won the Mathematical Chair at one of our smaller universities, and had, to all appearance, a most brilliant career before him. But the man had <b>hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind</b>. A criminal strain <b>ran in his blood</b>, which, instead of being modified, was increased and rendered infinitely more dangerous by his extraordinary mental powers.</div></blockquote></div><div><div><br /></div><div>And we find that the criminal in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> was discovered because of a family portrait. Holmes pointed out the portrait of Hugo Baskerville to Watson, who saw something of Sir Henry in it. But when Holmes covered Hugo's hat and hair with his arm, it became clear who it resembled:</div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“Good heavens!” I cried, in amazement.<br />
<p>  The face of Stapleton had sprung out of the canvas.<br />
</p><p>  “Ha, you see it now. My eyes have been trained to examine faces and not their trimmings. It is the first quality of a criminal investigator that he should see through a disguise.”<br />
</p><p>  “But this is marvellous. It might be his portrait.”<br />
</p><p>  “Yes, it is an interesting instance of <b>a throwback, which appears to be both physical and spiritual</b>. A study of family portraits is enough to convert a man to the doctrine of reincarnation. Here's some of what DAR wrote on that topic:</div><div><br /></div><blockquote><div>"The key plot element in 3GAR, aside from the wild-goose-chase ruse, is the cache of plates for counterfeiting banknotes. This differs sufficiently from the thirty thousand napoleons in gold in REDH, perhaps the critic will allow, permitting more freedom of locale. It has been a popular device in pastiches too." </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>He cites the Rathbone/Bruce film <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3mKUimb" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dressed to Kill</a></i> and the more recent <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2YF9ysQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Without a Clue</a></i>.<br /><br /></div><div>"The pastiches," says DAR, "were not as adventurous as 3GAR — nor as the reality —for they chased after plates for pounds and fivers, whereas Rodger Prescott's notes were hundreds." <div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>On the other hand, Prescott was a coiner as well,</div><blockquote><div>"and most coining was of spurious    silver — half-crowns, crowns, perhaps only shillings, worth $2 to$10 in 1980s  purchasing power — which was easier to make and to pass, being so much more common. Holmes exposed one coiner, he alleged, by finding copper and zinc filings in his trouser cuffs — most unlikely, pewter (the usual material for duff coins) being composed of tin and lead. But the real money was in high value banknotes."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Victorian newspapers make clear that the forging industry was viable. DAR quotes from the Portsmouth Evening News of 30 January 1883:</div><blockquote><div>"The manufacture of flash bank notes is being extensively carried on in the Midlands. The notes are of such good imitation that not only have commercial men been deceived, but they have been accepted by numerous local banks. The spurious character of the notes was first discovered on some being passed  to the Bank of England. The police suspect that the notes are produced and circulated by a gang of clever swindlers, having agents in the principal midlandtowns."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And from the same paper in 1885:</div><blockquote><div> "On Monday or Tuesday last a woman, accompanied by a respectabletradesman in Leadenhall Market, appeared at the Bank of England, and tendered to a cashier a £500 note, which she requested cash and  notes for. Thenote to all appearances was perfectly genuine, and it was only by the discovery that there were no notes of that particular number issued for that amount that the forgery was detected."</div></blockquote><div> <br /> A £500 note would have the modern purchasing power of — well, DAR, writing in the 1980s, says $35,000; I'd call it $100,000, based on the latest estimates of <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2021/09/thinking-about-money-in-sherlock-holmes.html#.YWWXfNpKjb0" target="_blank">how much the value of money has changed</a>.  <br /><br /> He adds: </div><blockquote><div>"One may marvel over the fact that the Bank of England could record and keep track of the number of every single banknote; but recall that gold was the usual medium of everyday transactions, unless the amount was sizeable. Banking accounts were less common, used chiefly for cheques transmitted between firms or by persons of substantial means."</div></blockquote><div>   <br /><br /> One final note:</div><blockquote><div>"There was a Roger Prescott, by the way, far back in English history; his line founded Lancaster, Massachusetts, and brought the Prescott name to America. There is no record of his coining or forging; perhaps the plates still lie buried."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>I hope to include some of these never-published studies in a proposed anthology of DAR's writing. It's a comedic meta-story, stuffed with facts and historical details. </p><p>A seventy-something Holmes is packing for his retirement in Sussex when Mrs. Hudson reveals that she's written a book about the mistakes he and Watson have made. He wants to stop publication at any cost, while she's determined to make her literary debut. </p><p>Things spiral out of control when she visits the editorial staff at the<i> Strand</i> <i>Magazine</i>. They send her to meet Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who thinks the old woman is deluded, since she thinks his creation is real. The editor loves the manuscript but can't find the writer. Sir Arthur is grumpy about the criticism of his writing and what he believes to be annoying fans. Meanwhile, Holmes and Watson bicker while trying to find the book.</p><p>Readers who wonder about Doyle's grasp of details will enjoy seeing many of the bobbles mentioned here, whether it's the location of Watson's wound or the question of his wife's name. The story drags a bit in the middle<span style="background-color: white; color: #202124; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">—</span>I'm not sure this idea and its working-out needed 180 pages<span style="background-color: white; color: #202124; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">—</span>but the concept is ridiculously fun.
