David L. Hammer, BSI ("Major-General Stoner") passed away in Newton, Iowa on December 27, 2018 at the age of 89. He was a prominent attorney and a major contributor to Sherlockian scholarship. David received his investiture in the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> in 1986.<br />
<br />
His legal career spanned five decades, and according to all who knew him, he was a tireless worker and researcher. His work ethic spilled over into his interest in Sherlock Holmes as well. He chronicled his career in a memoir titled <i>For the Record: My Name is Hammer</i>.<br />
<br />
One particular anecdote from the chapter "Biting Truth" illustrates David's approach. In court, his client indicated that David had coached him on what to say. Hammer recalled:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I saw my new law license slipping away. The judge leaned forward with a very interested look on his face. The witness said, 'He said above all to tell the truth, recognizing that if the truth bit the other lawyer on his rear he wouldn't recognize it.' [The jury] laughed uproariously, and I knew the case was won."</blockquote>
Similarly, David captured his adventures as a Sherlockian publisher in <i>The Game is Underfoot! The Memoir of a Sherlockian Publisher</i>. Hammer founded Gasogene Press in the early 1980s and had friendships with authors, collectors and editors like Jack Tracy, John Bennett Shaw, and Julian Wolff.<br />
<br />
Gasogene Press published dozens of books, including Hammer's own series of Sherlockian travel guides such as <i>The Game Is Afoot</i>, <i>For the Sake of the Game</i>, <i>The Worth of the Game</i> (all travel guides to England), <i>To Play the Game</i> (North America), <i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/dangerousgame.html" target="_blank">A Dangerous Game</a></i> (Europe), and <i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/deepgame.html" target="_blank">A Deep Game</a></i>, (London). In addition to David's many works, Gasogene Press published highly sought after works such as Susan Rice's <i>A Compound of Excelsior</i> and William Goodrich's <i>The New Good Old Inde</i>x.<br />

Eventually, David sold Gasogene Press to <a href="http://wessexpress.com/" target="_blank">Wessex Press</a>, where it became Gasogene Books, an imprint of Wessex Press.<br />
<br />
We simply don't have the space to publish (or the the time to curate) all of David's works. Fortunately, there are others who have done so: in particular, Prabook has <a href="https://prabook.com/web/david_lindley.hammer/33142" target="_blank">a comprehensive listing of David's legal and Sherlockian writings</a>. George Vanderburg's <a href="http://www.batteredbox.com/davidhammer/index.htm" target="_blank">Battered Silicon Dispatch Box</a> has many of David's books available, and <a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/catalog.html" target="_blank">Wessex Press</a> has some of the more seminal works.<br />
<br />
Hammer was widely read, having come from a household that included a mother who was on the board of the local library and a member of the Book of the Month Club. As a result, David disdained the prescribed course readings in college and instead read whatever college texts he was interested in.<br />
<br />
In an interview by Gael Stahl for the <a href="http://www.nashvillescholars.net/davidhammer.html" target="_blank">Nashville Scholars of the Three Pipe Problem</a>, Hammer recalled his high hopes for some stimulating intellectual discourse in the legal profession that were quickly dashed:<br />

"Most lawyers belong to a rather dull group. It's the unusual one who has an interest outside of the law. And if the interest is intensive, as matters that are literary or philosophical usually are, you don't find lawyers there. I remember I came back home at Christmas after my first six months in the practice of law, and my father asked me if I had any disappointments. And I said, 'Yes, Dad, I do, just two. One is the bench and the other is the bar.' I think I would still say that 40 years later."</blockquote>
By now we hope you're catching on to David's dry sense of humor. In <a href="http://www.nashvillescholars.net/DHammer-pt2.html" target="_blank">Part 2 of his interview</a> with Stahl, he continues to show it, recounting his very first BSI Dinner:<br />

At Hammer's table were <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banesh_Hoffmann" target="_blank">Banesh Hoffmann</a> on his right, <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose103" target="_blank">Al Rosenblatt</a> across from him, and a man with mutton-chop sideburns on his left. Hammer asked him what he did.<br />"I'm an author."<br />"So am I," said Hammer, proud of having just had his first book published about Holmes.<br />"How many books have you written?<br />"264 as of Tuesday, 267 by next week.<br />"Should I know your name?" (General laughter ensued.)<br />"You should, if you are a living American," said Isaac Asimov, one of the most distinguished of the Irregulars. </blockquote>

David and his first wife Audrey married in 1953 and traveled to every continent together. She predeceased him in 2011. Following that, he reconnected with Carol Soderblom, whom he had known since grade school, and soon the two were married. Sadly, Carol passed away on December 29, just two days after David.<br />
<br />
The Sherlockian world has lost a giant. All who knew him were the richer for it.<br />

The Curious Case of the New Yorker Cover

The 2018 year-end issue of <i>The New Yorker</i> caught the attention of many people. But Sherlockians in particular were alerted to the presence of Sherlock Holmes in the form of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.<br />
<br />
It's not often that Sherlock Holmes graces the cover of a magazine, and certainly not one of the stature of <i>The New Yorker</i>. And as you would imagine, that brought out the most avid collector of Sherlockian art that we know: Jerry Margolin, BSI ("Hilton Cubitt").<br />
<br />
Jerry joined us way back on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose16">Episode 16 of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a> to share his stories about his considerable art collection. And <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/12/one-sherlockians-christmas-card.html#.XCxZe1xKjb0">he shared his Christmas card tradition</a> with us as well.<br />

We caught up with Jerry to follow his pursuit of the original art from the cover of <i>The New Yorker</i>.<br />

<b>How did you first hear about this cover?</b></h3>
It was posted on Facebook. Somebody posted the cover long before it came out, so I don't know where they got the advance of the cover from. But as soon as I saw it, I showed it to [my wife] Saint Judy and said, "Gee, I've got to try and go after this. "<br />

<h3>
<b>Not an unheard of situation for you. You see Sherlockian art come around all the time and you manage to track down the artists, whether you know them or not. How do you do it? What's your first step in something like that?</b></h3>
Well, it's of course a lot easier now with Google and websites and so on. Even better than it was when I had no internet many, many moons ago. But usually, most artists now have a website. (I'm giving away my trade secrets here.) I have a feeling everybody else knows this as well, but I'll Google it and hopefully a website comes up. And if it does, there's usually some type of contact, email or Facebook.  I go ahead and send them a message. I have a fairly standard message that I write to them. And I hope for the best that they'll write me back.<br />

<b>Who is this artist and how did you respond?</b></h3>
It's a gentleman named <a href="https://www.barryblitt.com/">Barry Blitt</a> and he apparently does quite a number of covers for <i>The New Yorker</i> and has for a while. So it took me a little longer than normal, about two days to get in touch with him and to find him and get in touch with him. And he wrote me back. I would much rather just pick up a phone and call somebody and speak to them directly. But finally he answered me and I asked him my basic question, "is the item available and how much does it cost?" and we go from there.<br />

<h3>
<b>And what was his response? Was he surprised to hear from you?</b></h3>
He does sell his pieces<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">—</span>I don't know how frequently because his published pieces are amazingly expensive. He actually wouldn't quote me. He said, "I'm kind of embarrassed to quote you. What would you be willing to offer for it?" And I gave him what I thought was a very generous offer for it. I don't like to<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">—</span>usually you get one shot to make an offer. And I try sometimes to go overboard instead of undercutting it.<br />
<br />
So I gave him what I thought was a very generous offer for what I thought the art would be worth to me. And it took a little while for him to get back to me, but when he did he said, "Well normally<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">—</span>and this is why I was embarrassed to say<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">—</span>normally I get between $5,000 and $10,000 for my published covers." I said, "That's not in my financial universe, so thanks very much." But he said,  "I'm neurotic enough that when I do a cover I send two, and they can choose which one they want to use."<br />
<br />
So he said "I would be happy to sell you the alternate, which is fairly close to the other one." As a matter of fact, the inscription he gave me on the back of the art<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">—</span>because I always ask an artist to sign it on the front and then inscribe it to me on the back because my framer cuts a window in the back mat to show off these descriptions<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif;">—</span>on this one, he, he wrote:<br />

"This is an alternate version of the artwork that appeared in <i>The New Yorker</i> 2018 year-end cover. (I think this is a better drawing, but what do I know?)"</blockquote>
So he actually thinks they picked the <i>wrong </i>cover.<br />

<b>As a Sherlockian art collector, having looked at both of them, which do you prefer?</b></h3>
Well, my preference, of course, no matter which one was better or not better would be, do have had the actual published cover. That said, I think except for a couple of little minor differences of an arm here or a hand there, and a little bit of difference in the patterns that he used for the deerstalker and Inverness, I think it's a toss up on these. I would have been happy with either one of them. I think they're both incredibly good and I'm very happy with the one that I wound up getting except for the minor detail that it isn't the final published cover. But I have a Frederic Dorr Steele that is not the final published version, and I'm happy that I have that one too.<br />

<b>When you get a piece of art like that—a published piece of a magazine cover—do you typically frame the public piece, the magazine cover next to the original piece of art?</b></h3>
I have done that in one or two cases. I'm looking at one now on my wall here where I did do that. Mostly what I'll do is frame the piece and then on the back in a mylar bag we'll attach the magazine to the back of the frame. It gets fairly large if you have to frame both together. And I just have no more wall space. I literally have no more wall space and that's why I'm not framing pretty much anything else. I just have nowhere to put it and it would just sit on the floor or somewhere. This one I I will hang when I get it framed. I'll find space for it, even if I have to remove something else from the wall.<br />
<br />
I'm going to try and put it next to my Obama piece. I have the painting of the cover of The National Review. It was a painting Obama dressed as Holmes. I tracked down the artist. It's a magnificent, beautiful, full color piece. And I tracked down the artists, a gentleman named Ramon Guen and  asked if I could purchase the cover. And he said it was gone already. And I asked him, "Could you recreate it for me?"<br />
<br />
So he said, "Yeah, I can do that." So he recreated it—and I'm talking down to the last pen stroke.<br />
<br />
And that one, I framed and I have the magazine cover on the back of that one. I want to try and find space to put this when it's done next to Obama.<br />

<b>Do you see a lot of visual representations of Sherlock Holmes in the political realm?</b></h3>
Oh sure. As matter of fact, there were two recent cartoons. I just got two pieces from a phenomenal artist and political cartoonist—a Pulitzer Prize winner—named Mike Luckovitch. <a href="https://www.ajc.com/blog/luckovich/mike-luckovich-hurry-sherlock/oRom9cHPnl87JA7IudhHRO/">One is Holmes with "FBI" on his Inverness</a>. He's holding a paper that says "Kavanaugh Allegations" and says, "Come Watson, we have a job to do." And off to the right is Trump holding a stopwatch and saying, "Time's up!"<br />

<b>The best part about all of this is how you make it a spectator sport for the rest of us.</b></h3>
Well, I'm, I'm glad if people enjoy it. I don't do it as a "Ooh, look at me, I've got this." I just want to share the stuff with people and I hope that they enjoy seeing some things that maybe they'll never get a chance to see.<br />
<br />
One of those things of course, is the [original] Paget. I'm one of the very, very lucky people to have an original Paget. So usually when a Sherlockian visits, that's what they want to see the first time right when they get here. And I'm happy to show it. I still, after I've owned it now for going on almost 40 years I still stare at it and kind of pinch myself. Because back in my early collecting days, that was not even a dream. So to have actually have been able to do it is pretty amazing to me. Still after all these years.<br />

<b>Which Paget drawing is it?</b></h3>
It's from "The Resident Patient," of Holmes holding the cigar case sniffing the cigar. It is one of the more well known pieces. I'm happy to show this stuff to anybody, uh, that would like to make the trip to Portland to see it. If anybody does, they can contact me and if I'm home and going to be here and they're welcome to stop by.<br />

We all have our struggles. And as we turn the page of the calendar, moving from one year to the next, the New Year holiday gives many people an excuse to change a behavior or try something new.<br />
<br />
Based on what we know about Holmes and Watson, how likely do you think it would have been that either one of them would have had New Year's resolutions? And what might they have been?<br />
<br />
Holmes strikes us as the type to not be concerned with the artificial stimulant of January 1. With his ordered brain and logical thinking, he could set himself to a new set of behaviors when he wanted to (although he struggled from time to time with his drug mania that Watson helped free him from—"the fiend was not dead, but sleeping." [MISS]).<br />
<br />
Watson's family had its own issues with addiction: Holmes deduced in The Sign of Four that Watson's brother was an alcoholic, and Holmes himself had to lock away Watson's cheque-book lest Watson gamble away his pension. Perhaps Watson tried his hand at resolutions regarding his betting habits.<br />
<br />
Either way, these resolutions may have been quickly forgotten on the occasion of Holmes's birthday on January 6th...<br />

Today traditionally marks the date on which "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" took place. The seventh in the series of stories that make up <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, "The Blue Carbucnle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.<br />

Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."</blockquote>
It has become a tradition at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere to acknowledge December 27th with a repeat feature. Just as the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "<a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-3My0j_zJAhUIPCYKHePhBrMQFgghMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2FSB10001424052970204464404577112431986005786&usg=AFQjCNFBOMTBdMiqlxf9tGYz0Jb-tieRKw&sig2=qjutMkGmsi34eHf1n39PhQ" target="_blank"><i>In Hoc Anno Domini</i></a>," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.<br />

Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.<br />

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br />
<br />
This is the <b>seventh </b>annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6321981775136876837" name="more"></a>While we know how many well-informed and helpful readers we have, we were quite astonished at the quality and quantity of suggestions that can make the BSI Weekend an enjoyable and stress-free one for you. Bags</h4>
<ul>
<li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li>
<li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li>
<li>You might also consider bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room on Saturday to carry your various purchases. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<h4>
Meeting Others</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li>
<li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li>
<li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner. </li>
<li>Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Comportment / Etiquette</h4>
<ul>
<li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li>
<li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li>
<li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your Facebook timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Attire</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li>
<li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li>
<li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Money</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. </li>
<li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li>
<li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li>
<li>The BSI table will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li>
<li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and double it. That might get you through. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Time</h4>
<ul>
<li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li>
<li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li>
<li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.</li>
<li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Getting Around</h4>
<ul>
<li>Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li>
<li>If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's <a href="http://citymapper.com/" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gogobot.gogodroid.cityguide.newyorkcity" target="_blank">Gogobot's York City Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a> by Ulmon.</li>
<li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2018/11/summary-of-events.html#sthash.K6pyuPJg.dpbs">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li>
<li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Yale Club or the Roosevelt the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>Brooklyn Bridge Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li>
<li>Download the <b>MYmta app</b> from the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mymta/id1297605670?mt=8">App Store</a> or <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.mta.mymta&hl=en">Google Play</a> for navigating the subway. </li>
<li>Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride <b><a href="http://web.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm">MetroCards</a></b>. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.</li>
<ul>
<li>If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. <b>Note:</b> a 65+ MetroCard <b><i>cannot</i></b> be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.</li>
<li>If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.</li>
</ul>
<li>Download a ride-hailing app such as <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787" target="_blank">Lyft</a> or Uber. </li>
<ul>

<li>Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system. </li>
<li>Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now? </li>
<li>The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable 5 years ago) – if this continues, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcaric/8379354330/">Mattias Bostrom</a>. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
The Unscheduled</h4>
<ul>
<li>If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer eat breakfast alone – saving energy for later conversations).</li>
<li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Dining</h4>
What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.<br />
<ul>
<li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. </li>
<li>There is a Cosí across the street from the Roosevelt, at 38 East 45th Street, and of course Starbucks in the station and at nearly every corner. </li>
<li>For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, <a href="http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/07/where-to-eat-near-grand-central-station-nyc.html" target="_blank">Serious Eats has a guide</a> that breaks them down by category and of course <a href="http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants+near+grand+central&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY%2C+USA" target="_blank">Yelp has many suggestions</a> as well. </li>
<li>And heaven forbid, don't forget about the <a href="http://www.redflamenyc.com/">Red Flame</a>, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.</li>
</ul>

Online</h4>
Whether you're in New York for the festivities or sequestered at home, it might be worthwhile to follow along online. Some ways to do that:<br />

Malcolm Gladwell's 2008 Book <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outliers_(book)" target="_blank">Outliers</a></i> posited that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to master anything. A recent study has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-study-destroys-malcolm-gladwells-10000-rule-2014-7" target="_blank">debunked that claim</a>.<br />
<br />
But the notion that dedication results in expertise is a powerful one. We look around at our fellow Sherlockians and imagine how much time, collectively, has been spent not only with the Sherlock Holmes stories, but the thousands of books, articles and other media that have sprung up as a result of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation.<br />
<br />
The original <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/04/curious-constitution-sign_17.html#.XBXJdGhKjb0" target="_blank">Constitution and Buy-Laws</a> of the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> stated:<br />

The current round shall be bought by any member who fails to identify, by title of story and context, and quotation from the Sacred Writings submitted by any other member.<br />     Qualification A. If two or more members fail so to identify, a round shall be bought by each of those so failing.<br />     Qualification B. There's no way this exercise could be seriously undertaken unless the attendees put in hours of reading, over and over again.<br />

And one might think that in today's world, where online and offline search capabilities of the Canon make us lazier in this regard. In our case, we strenuously object. Years of reading the Sherlock Holmes stories closely and watching the Jeremy Brett Granada episodes — which quite often lifted dialog directly from the Canon — it's burned into our brain. We use the search capability to ensure we get the wording exactly right for <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/p/title-abbreviations.html#.XBXL9mhKjb0" target="_blank">the quote that precedes every article</a> here.<br />

Close readers of the Sherlock Holmes stories may recall one of the unpublished cases concerning "a remarkable worm said to be unknown to science," as mentioned in "<b>The Problem of Thor Bridge</b>."<br />
<br />
But what about "remarkable cow"?<br />
<br />
Well, that would be the "cow" that left the tracks that Holmes noticed in "<b>The Priory School</b>." He demonstrated to Watson his recollection of the hoofprints:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Can you recall that the tracks were sometimes like that, Watson”—he arranged a number of breadcrumbs in this fashion—: : : : :—“and sometimes like this”—: . : . : . : .—“and occasionally like this”—. . . . . . .</blockquote>
Adding, "it is a remarkable cow which walks, canters, and gallops."<br />
<br />
One visit to the stables of Mr. Reuben Hayes, and they discovered two run-down looking horses, with the following curious feature:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Old shoes, but newly shod—old shoes, but new nails.”</blockquote>
At the conclusion of the case, Holmes wondered how the culprit had developed the idea of putting cow-shaped shoes on horses, and asked the Duke of Holdernesse as much:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“This fellow Hayes had shod his horses with shoes which counterfeited the tracks of cows. Was it from Mr. Wilder that he learned so extraordinary a device?”<br />
The Duke stood in thought for a moment, with a look of intense surprise on his face. Then he opened a door and showed us into a large room furnished as a museum. He led the way to a glass case in a corner, and pointed to the inscription.<br />
<br />
“These shoes,” it ran, “were dug up in the moat of Holdernesse Hall. They are for the use of horses; but they are shaped below with a cloven foot of iron, so as to throw pursuers off the track. They are supposed to have belonged to some of the marauding Barons of Holdernesse in the Middle Ages.“</blockquote>

Well, this wasn't entirely a fictitious practice, as it turns out.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/11/26/moonshine-and-cow-shoes/" target="_blank">The Vintage News</a>, moonshiners regularly used cow shoes to escape the authorities.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
To help give themselves some extra time when fleeing on foot, some moonshiners came up with an unusual way of camouflaging their tracks and throwing pursuit off the trail — cow shoes.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The idea was that if police found human footprints in areas where people don’t generally go, that was a clear indicator of something unusual and worth investigating, which could possibly lead to the discovery of an illegal still.</blockquote>

What comes to mind when you picture gas lights barely illuminating fog-choked London streets as horse-drawn cabs clatter across cobblestones? For Sherlockians, this setting conjures images of Holmes and Watson tracking undesirables through the heart of Queen Victoria’s empire.<br />
<br />
However, there is an equally devoted-maybe obsessed is more appropriate?-group for whom these images recall not the fictional exploits of the world’s first consulting detective and his loyal chronicler, but instead the very real series of gruesome murders that took place in London’s Whitechapel district from August to October in 1888. These London streets are where Sherlockians meet Ripperologists.<br />
<br />
In <i><a href="https://bharperauthor.com/books/a-knife-in-the-fog-book/" target="_blank">A Knife in the Fog</a></i>, Bradley Harper combines the true story of Jack the Ripper and a fictionalized account of Arthur Conan Doyle, as a young physician and emerging mystery writer. Harper uses actual events and individuals involved in the investigation of the Ripper murders and brings not only Conan Doyle but a host of other historical figures, such as Conan Doyle’s former professor Dr. Joseph Bell and suffragette Margaret Harkness, into the plot.<br />
<br />
The novel opens with the young Dr. Conan Doyle receiving a request for his services to investigate the unfolding Ripper murders as an unofficial consultant following the success of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. Recognizing that his deductive powers might be limited to the fictional realm and reluctant to undertake such a challenge, Conan Doyle calls upon the very inspiration for his genius detective, his former professor of surgery Dr. Joseph Bell. Conan Doyle and Bell are then guided through the squalor and horrors of Victorian Whitechapel by famous suffragette Margaret Harkness.<br />
<br />
These three are the central characters but their adventures include many other period personalities. Some of these figures have been made famous, or infamous, by the often-recounted Ripper investigation, and others are Victorian celebrities. Regardless of whether their presence is new or established in the Ripper saga, Dr. Harper uses these personae to develop engaging characters that go beyond mere caricatures.<br />
<br />
The story is well-paced and Dr. Harper draws the reader through the narrative by relying on the well-trod ground of the Ripper murders. Helpfully, the reader is not responsible for knowing the Ripper investigation inside and out to enjoy the plot.<br />
<br />
Dr. Harper provides enough detail to bring any Ripper neophyte up to speed. The novel also draws on the niche genre of Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper, including novels like Lyndsay Faye’s <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dust-Shadow-Account-Ripper-Killings/dp/1416583319" target="_blank">Dust & Shadow</a></i> and films such as <i>Murder by Decree</i>.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>A Knife in the Fog</i> takes a slightly different approach by using Joseph Bell and Conan Doyle, in place of Holmes and Watson. In his use of Conan Doyle as the protagonist, Harper builds on the tradition of Graham Moore’s <i>Sherlockian</i> and Julian Barnes’s Man Booker-shortlisted <i>Arthur & George</i>.<br />
<br />
<i>A Knife in the Fog</i> is an engaging read for any period enthusiast. If the reader does bring a prior knowledge of the Ripper murders then he or she will undoubtedly appreciate the extensive research into the murders and investigation that went into crafting the story.<br />
<br />
Similarly, a familiarity with Conan Doyle’s canon will allow the reader to readily identify multiple Sherlockian references hidden throughout the story, similar to canonical “Easter Eggs” in the Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes films or BBC’s <i>Sherlock</i>.<br />
<br />
Anyone who enjoys Victorian-era mysteries will find much to like in this novel. If you are drawn in by the unique take on Holmesian pastiche, you might even find yourself digging into the world’s most infamous unsolved murder mystery as a result.<br />
<br />
The only question is whether you have the time and energy for another obsession.<br />

Have you ever procrastinated? We won't wait for you to answer that. Of course you have. We all have, at one time or another. But making a habit of procrastination might be a sign of something deeper.<br />

If you procrastinate chronically, there may be <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/adhd-and-chronic-procrastination-20379" target="_blank">a connection to ADHD</a>. Whether it's difficulty focusing, feeling overwhelmed, fear of failure – there may be a number of underlying reasons. One is that sense of panic or a rush that comes with trying to complete something on a time-constricted deadline.<br />
<br />
It's like a stimulant to the brain. And there is <a href="https://www.additudemag.com/stimulant-medications-for-adhd/" target="_blank">a connection between stimulants and ADHD</a>, which often leads to non-diagnosed ADHD patients turning to drugs and alcohol <a href="https://www.additudemag.com/the-truth-about-adhd-and-addiction/" target="_blank">to self-medicate</a>.<br />
<br />
Which brings us to Sherlock Holmes. Could he have had ADHD? His use of cocaine is well known, and it was typically at times when he didn't have work. He said he needed something to keep his mind busy, comparing it to "a racing engine," [SOLI] that "racks itself to pieces" [DEVI].<br />
<br />
We get the most clear explanation of this in the opening of <i>The Sign of Four</i>, when Holmes was using cocaine "three times a day for many months":<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation.” – </blockquote>
We're not neuropsychologists (nor do we play them on TV), so we'll leave the final diagnosis to the experts as to whether or not <a href="https://www.livingaddventure.com/all-about-adhd/what-is-adhd/179-sherlock-holmes-and-the-case-of-add" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes had ADHD</a>.<br />
