When we say "I hear of Sherlock everywhere," we're not simply quoting Mycroft Holmes. Nor are we referring to our <a href="http://ihose.co/ihoseshows">twice-monthly show</a>. We mean that because we're so connected with the sixty original stories that Sherlock Holmes seems to be in just about everything we come across.<br />
<br />
This of course extends to film, as Sherlock Holmes holds a <a href="http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2012/5/sherlock-holmes-awarded-title-for-most-portrayed-literary-human-character-in-film-tv-41743/">Guinness World Record</a> for being the most portrayed literary human character in film. And one would think that Dr. Watson would be right along side him in that regard, since they most often appear together.<br />
<br />
Over the course of more than 100 years in film and television, the two have emblazoned themselves in our hearts and in our minds, from William Gillette to Benedict Cumberbatch and many other actors in between.<br />

At the start of the First World War, there was a mass outpouring of sympathy and charity for the men fighting for Britain. The Royal family were not immune to this and in October 1914, the young Princess Mary, inspired by her visits to hospitals for injured soldiers, wanted to show her support. So she publicly announced her intentions to provide a gift for ‘every sailor afloat and every soldier at the front’. Such decorative boxes were fine for enlisted men, but what about the spies? They couldn't be seen with readily identifiable hardware.<br />
<br />
Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple") joined us to talk about just what these boxes were and how they may have included an item or two related to Sherlock Holmes. But digging a little deeper, he discovered the possibility that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and publisher George H. Doran may have been collaborating to provide propaganda to the troops.<br />

We know the main players in the Sherlock Holmes stories by the names that are familiar to many people throughout the world. But there has been some confusion along the way.<br />
<br />
Sherlock Holmes was originally intended to be called "Sherrinford" and John Watson was originally cast as "Ormond Sacker." But of course Mrs. Watson <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles07">had other ideas</a> about what he should be called. Conan Doyle went to great lengths in his selection of names (not quite so far as Charles Dickens), and Don Redmond, BSI ("Good Old Index") even penned <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Sources-Donald-Redmond/dp/0773503919">A Study in Sources</a></i> to trace a few origins.<br />
<br />
Whether we know them by first or last name, by an American or British pronunciation (or spelling), or by their intended versus given names, they are, to us, all the same. No doubt the halls of Baker Street Elementary will be one day buzzing with the study of <i>Romeo and Juliet</i>, in which Juliet wonders:<br />

If you've ever visited Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, it's likely that you've heard of <a href="http://groombridgeplace.com/">Groombridge Place</a>. It's an estate that dates from 1230, with the current manor house having been built in 1662.<br />
<br />
One of the most notable features of the house is that it's moated. If that sounds familiar, then you may recall a moated house that played a part in one of the original 60 Sherlock Holmes stories: the moated house of Birlstone in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>.<br />
<br />
[Note: this should not be confused with Hurlstone, in "The Musgrave Ritual." We recognize that this may occur occasionally because the names of the manor houses rhyme, and because the <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/04/experience-sherlock-holmes-filming.html#.Wl4n-KinHb0">filming location for the Granada version</a> of "The Musgrave Ritual" with Jeremy Brett was at <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/baddesley-clinton">Baddesley Clinton</a>, another 500 year-old moated house.]<br />

However, as with many locations, homes and names used in the Canon, there has been historic speculation about exactly which stately home inspired Birlstone in the 1914 novel. And as with many things in the Sherlockian world, it has been debated as well. With this entry, we'd like to bring you into a battle of titans and show how the definitive inspiration was debunked with some fairly incontrovertible proof.</div>

"A Case of Identity"</h4>
Aside from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groombridge_Place" target="_blank">fascinating history of Groombridge Place</a>, the property should be of interest to Sherlockians because of its associations with the Manor House of Birlstone in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>. But first a little history in the identification.<br />
<br />
H.W. Bell, BSI ("<i>The Valley of Fear</i>") was one of the early and great Sherlockian scholars and Baker Street Irregulars. Bell was a Bostonian (being an inveterate member of The Speckled Band of Boston) who carried on correspondence with a number of other Sherlockians, including Dorothy Sayers and Edgar Smith. Smith was impressed with Bell's <i>Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: The Chronology of Their Adventures</i> (1932) and he included Bell's "Three Identifications" in <i>Profile by Gaslight</i> in 1944. It was in this monograph that Bell determined that Birlstone Manor was based on <b>The Moated House at Brambletye</b>. <br /><br />In 1945, the year after the BSI began issuing investitures, Bell received his — "<i>The Valley of Fear</i>" — specifically to recognize his scholarship in this area (and it should be noted that the four novels — STUD, SIGN, HOUN and VALL — were considered uber-investitures and were given to some of the earliest and most significant Sherlockians of the day: Vincent Starrett, Christopher Morley, Edgar Smith and Bell, respectively).<br />

Keddie had with him three leaves from a second printing of <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, published in 1915 — one of which included this inscription from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself:<br />

That settled the matter nicely.<br />

But what of the "old house" itself? Here we have the description of Birlstone Manor from <i>The Valley of Fear</i>:<br />

About half a mile from the town, standing in an old park famous for its huge beech trees, is the ancient Manor House of Birlstone. Part of this venerable building dates back to the time of the first Crusade, when Hugo de Capus built a fortalice in the centre of the estate, which had been granted to him by the Red King. This was destroyed by fire in 1543, and some of its smoke-blackened corner-stones were used when, in Jacobean times, a brick country house rose upon the ruins of the feudal castle. The Manor House, with its many gables and its small, diamond-paned windows, was still much as the builder had left it in the early seventeenth century. Of the double moats which had guarded its more warlike predecessor the outer had been allowed to dry up, and served the humble function of a kitchen garden. The inner one was still there, and lay, forty feet in breadth, though now only a few feet in depth, round the whole house. A small stream fed it and continued beyond it, so that the sheet of water, though turbid, was never ditch-like or unhealthy. The ground floor windows were within a foot of the surface of the water. The only approach to the house was over a drawbridge, the chains and windlass of which had long been rusted and broken. The latest tenants of the Manor House had, however, with characteristic energy, set this right, and the drawbridge was not only capable of being raised, but actually was raised every evening and lowered every morning. By thus renewing the custom of the old feudal days the Manor House was converted into an island during the night - a fact which had a very direct bearing upon the mystery which was soon to engage the attention of all England."</blockquote>

We've all had experience listening to Sherlock Holmes audio programs. Right? RIGHT??<br />

And just as we have favorite screen adaptations, we also have our special audio heroes as well. Rathbone and Bruce, Gielgud and Richardson, Shelley and Hobbes, Merrison and Williams... they all bring to mind a feeling of nostalgia for the stories.<br />

But there are many original episodes that have gone missing. And our guest, Ian Dickerson, has managed to track down some of the original scripts of the Rathbone/Bruce radio series that were lost to the ages. Between the Edith Meiser era and the Anthony Boucher / Denis Green era, there was another writer — one known more for his stories about Simon Templar than anything else. And Ian managed to unearth them and put together a fine book on the topic.<br />

For the most part, the Sherlock Holmes stories are tightly woven into reality. That is, they take place in a world that exists (or existed) and deal with events based in fact.<br />
<br />
Even cases like <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, "The Devil's Foot," and "The Sussex Vampire," which seemed to be based on some kind of supernatural or other-worldly influence, were easily explained away with scientific observations. Very little of the Canon veers into science fiction. One exception might be in "The Creeping Man," where an individual takes on the behaviors and traits of something that is not quite human. (We'll leave the spoilers out of this)<br />
<br />
One member of the Baker Street Irregulars was Isaac Asimov, BSI ("The Remarkable Worm Unknown to Science"), who was a prolific writer of science fiction novels. Of course, he also did some Sherlockian writing as well. The area where the two intersected was in <i><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/76229.Sherlock_Holmes_Through_Time_and_Space">Sherlock Holmes Through Time and Space</a></i>, an anthology of science fiction Sherlock Holmes stories which he edited.<br />

As always, Friday evening of the <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">BSI Weekend</a> marked the Gaslight Gala and the BSI dinner. Both were events that the participants looked forward to, and we're receiving reports of a wonderful time had by the participants of each gathering.<br />

<b><a href="http://gaslightgalanyc.wordpress.com/">The Gaslight Gala</a></b> got under way at the Social Bar Grill and Lounge, and as is the custom, the event was filled with creative and fun activities for all of the attendees. Just one glance could tell you that:<br />

Meanwhile, over at the Yale Club, the <b>BSI Dinner</b> saw the gathering of Baker Street Irregulars and guests, beginning with the presentation to <b>The Woman</b>, who this year was Patricia Izban, wife of Don Izban, BSI ("Market Street").<br />

Activities then moved to the main dining room, where the traditional toasts were given and rituals recited. The evening's activities usually include remembered those members who broke from the ranks the previous year, some music, and one or two scholarly papers.<br />
<br />
But one thing that is widely anticipated is the <b>Honours List</b> — that is, who received an investiture or other honorific.<br />
<br />

In "The Adventure of the Second Stain," Sherlock Holmes said to Watson, "the fair sex is your department." But now it seems that it is ours as well.<br />
<br />
We've seen a number of strong female characters in recent productions on the screen. Of course <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose40" target="_blank">Lara Pulver</a> as a strong female lead as Irene Adler in <i>Sherlock</i> from the BBC in "A Scandal in Belgravia." [<b><i>Editor's note</i></b>: <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose40" target="_blank">listen to our interview with Ms. Pulver here</a>] And we've also been treated to a female Watson in the guise of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/02/lucy-that-brings-me-here-stud_27.html" target="_blank">Lucy Liu</a> as Dr. Joan Watson in <i>Elementary </i>— and another strong female as an antagonist in that series, which for spoiler purposes, will go unnamed.<br />
<br />
Now, from HBO Asia and Hulu Japan, we have a new series featuring a different kind of female lead: <a href="http://hboasia.com/HBO/en-ph/shows/miss-sherlock/" target="_blank"><i>Miss Sherlock</i></a>. Both Holmes and Watson will be women in this version.<br />

According to HBO's site,<br />

<b><i>Miss Sherlock</i></b> pays homage to the classic by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, with bold interpretations of the iconic characters, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. <i><b>Miss Sherlock</b></i> is set in modern day Tokyo and both lead characters are Japanese women – Dr. Wato Tachibana, a surgeon recently returned from a volunteer doctors’ mission in Syria and Sara Shelly Futaba, an investigation consultant to the police department who solves bizarre and difficult cases. It will be interesting to see the reaction from our friends in Japan, a country which has long been a hotbed of Sherlockian activity — the <a href="http://www.holmesjapan.jp/english/" target="_blank">Japan Sherlock Holmes Club</a> historically has had members numbering in the thousands and was the source of the first edition of the Baker Street Irregulars International Series, <i><a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/japan.html" target="_blank">Japan and Sherlock Holmes</a></i>. The last time Japan had a television show about Sherlock Holmes was 2014 with the puppetry show <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_(2014_TV_series)" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes</a></i> and the animated <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Hound" target="_blank">Sherlock Hound</a></i> from the mid 1980s.<br />

Now that the holiday season is behind us and the inevitable bills begin to roll in, it's an appropriate time to think of money. For example, that Christmas goose in "The Blue Carbuncle" cost 7/6 (that's seven shillings and sixpence, or 37.5 pence in decimal currency) at wholesale, and 12 shillings (60 pence) at retail. In 2017, it's not so easy to buy a Christmas goose (let alone one that includes "the feathers, legs, crop, and so on") but Butterball turkeys were on sale for $1.99 a pound at my local supermarket. <br />

We might conclude that 12 shillings in the early 1890s corresponds to $40 (for a 20-pound bird) today. But that equivalence is valid only if you can get the turkey on sale. The regular price is $4.39 a pound, some $88 for the 20-pounder, and a little arithmetic indicates that one pound (£1) in that era was worth more like $146 in today's money. I'm talking Canadian dollars, of course.<br />

The figure is only an estimate, but to somebody who has been dabbling in the minutiae of 1895 for a long time now (i.e., me), they seem about right. In fact let's say $150 in today's Canadian dollar, or $120 in US dollars, for each £1, each golden sovereign, spent or earned by the people among whom Sherlock Holmes moved.<br />

These numbers are more than double what I proposed when I first wrote about the value of Victorian currency in "A Sherlockian Visits the Currency Exchange," published in<i> <a href="http://www.torontobootmakers.com/canadian-holmes/">Canadian Holmes</a></i> in 1986. At that time I suggested a rule of thumb of $70 for each £1. Later I hiked the figure to $100 — and let me repeat that these are all hand-waving estimates, not precise determinations.<br />

Apply the $120 (US) figure to some other prices and what do you get? The shilling paid to each Baker Street Irregular would be $6. That dress bought for Madame Derbyshire in "Silver Blaze", priced at 22 <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/04/the-curious-incident-of-guinea-coin.html#.WlI2aN-nHb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">guineas</a> (23 pounds 2 shillings), would be $2,800 — "expensive tastes" indeed. Eight shillings for a bed, and 8d (eightpence) for a glass of sherry, in "The Noble Bachelor" would be $48 for the hotel room, $4 for the drink. Both figures seem a little low, but bear in mind that the hotel room had neither air conditioning nor colour television, probably not even a bathroom.<br />
<br />
What about incomes? Violet Hunter's £100 a year becomes $12,000 plus room and board, not bad at all. Neville St. Clair was naturally happy to take in 26/4 ($158) a day as a beggar, having earned just £2 ($240) a week as a journalist — well below most minimum wage levels these days. Other than Jabez Wilson, earning £4 or $480 a week at his sinecure, incomes were, in fact, far lower in the Victorian era than they are today. To put it another way, standards of living have risen, allowing far more people to buy houses, own personal electronics, and pay income tax (the rate in Victorian Britain was 2.5 per cent, with incomes under £150 exempt altogether).<br />
<br />
I have to repeat that there is no precision in this sort of calculation, but it gives a hint of what's implied by Watson's wound pension of 11/6 a day, Victor Hatherley's fee of 50 guineas for a night's work, or Mary Maberley's <a href="http://www.cunard.com/cruise-search/book-a-cruise/cruises/qv/2823-v904f-sou1-sou2/staterooms-and-fares/" target="_blank">trip round the world</a> on £5,000. </div>

Today is January 6th and that marks the date on which we traditionally celebrate Sherlock Holmes's birthday.<br />
<br />
We say "traditionally," because there is no definitive statement of his actual date of birth in the Canon, but beginning with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Morley">Christopher Morley</a>, the date of January 6th has become the de facto accepted date for Holmes' birthday. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br />
<br />
Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743482778?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0743482778">Twelfth Night</a><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEjsc-CslxTjCdXUIIrP1JjtSbrOuVqbQY4wmPXHv0-mQ3lat6DMqDTNXzZPdvzHRXj-xozSLxUPcn8JI0-LUvaXIZGji9159DhTm6UHyjT4VCjdNIMgx7hzEWiMc_OPMDRgSPlp2TFuq5EU6lVl_Fc1lVuulrAZ1GMRBeizQJqv4VV5P60gdS7kIz4=" /></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br />
<br />
The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br />
<br />
In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="http://amzn.to/14hLF8i"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th - the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began - he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br />

And why 164? Scholars have fixed the year of Sherlock Holmes's birth to 1854 by virtue of a line in "His Last Bow" when he was described as "a tall gaunt man of sixty."<br />
