In my too few visits by letter and in person, we discussed all things Sherlockian. The following points are concepts I took away from my conversations with John Bennett." </blockquote> My favorite point from Ron's list is #1 "If you have one of a Sherlockian collectible, you gloat. If you have two, you share." I have the feeling that within Sherlockian culture we're about to experience a Shaw zeitgeist of sorts as younger Holmes fans who are just discovering the wide world of Sherlockian scholarship and Sherlockian history learn of the role Shaw played in the development and growth of U.S. scion societies. Personally, none of these items would make my Top 5 - maybe a few would linger somewhere around the lower end of my top 30 - but this list is something that makes me happy as a Sherlockian because it stresses the interest the author Nick Cardillo has in the Canon, even if it's the Canon in the context of the Warner Bros. films, the 11th Doctor donning a deerstalker or BBC <i>Sherlock</i>. You may recall Fetherston from her 2012 BSJ Christmas Annual <a href="https://twitter.com/BakerStJournal/status/285754206994976769/photo/1"><i>Barrymore In Baker Street: "The Great Profile" Meets "The Great Detective," and They Both Get Their Names Up In Lights</i></a>, a terrific look at actor <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013597/">John Barrymore</a> who played the Great Detective in <a href="http://youtu.be/wLKeWcC1xyc"><i>Sherlock Holmes</i></a> (1922). Bliss Austin, an executive for US Steel, amassed one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints as well as collections of Sherlockiana at the time. Jon Lellenberg, BSI ("Rodger Prescott"), in his 1988 obituary of Austin, sums up rather succinctly the role Austin played in Sherlockian culture: "If the Baker Street Irregulars represent Sherlockiana's aristocracy, Bliss was a gracious and courtly Prince of the Realm. He exemplified for others what it meant to be an Irregular of the old school." Diamond working on the script of <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i>. The finished film originally lasted over 3 hours, but the studios panicked over the failure of such long form films and demanded cuts. The film was hacked down to an acceptable 93 minutes. Diamond didn’t speak to Wilder for almost a year....The film was originally structured as a series of very specifically structured linked episodes, each with a particular title and theme. Yes, we're aware that Tom Baker, who portrayed the Fourth Doctor, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/09/doctor-will-meet-me-here-resi_16.html#.UqomiPSICM4" target="_blank">also made an appearance as Holmes</a>, but Wholock goes beyond that. When you consider the ease of access to assets and the ability to edit, create and process completely new assets based on what's available, it shouldn't be surprising that we see some pretty creative output.<br /> <br /> From animated gifs to posters, memes and more, the fans have incredible imaginations and skills. But we were completely awestruck when we saw the work of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3bGYljQ5Uw" target="_blank">John Smith on YouTube</a>:<br /> <br /> <center> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/q3bGYljQ5Uw" width="640"></iframe></center> <br /> Professionally cut and edited, it would be easy to think that this is an official work of the BBC. And while Steven Moffat does have a hand in both shows, this was completely the work of a fan. Featuring <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001626/"><b>Christopher Plummer</b></a>'s second outing as Holmes - he first appeared as the Great Detective in a 1977 TV adaptation of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0176144/"><i>Silver Blaze</i></a> (an under-appreciated though excellent adaptation) - and accompanied by James Mason as Watson, <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1f6Lzkw" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Murder By Decree</a></i> is both a typical and atypical 1970s-era Holmes adaptation which pits the Great Detective against Whitechapel's most notorious denizen, Saucy Jack. Noting that <i>Murder By Decree</i> was not the first Sherlock vs. Jack the Ripper film - that honor goes to <a href="http://amzn.to/1gfnECz" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>A Study In Terror</i></a> (1965) featuring John Neville as Holmes and Donald Houston as Watson -<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "it features a far darker plot, draws off of real events and characters and features one of the finest yet controversial portrayals of Sherlock Holmes....Much like <a href="http://amzn.to/1kn7GDO" target="_blank"><i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i></a> (1970) and <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1chhcnK" target="_blank">The Seven-Per-Cent Solution</a></i> (1979) there is something very different about this version of Sherlock Holmes. Maybe another time.<br /> <br /> This post is about the new Sherlock Holmes book by <a href="http://georgemann.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">George Mann</a> called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AP2UVVG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AP2UVVG&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>The Will of the Dead</i></a>.  Mann is more well known (in certain niche literary circles) for his Newbury and Hobbes steampunk series, is a wonderfully talented writer who has a way with words that only British authors seem to be able to pull off.<br /> <br /> In my mind there are two ways to write a Sherlock Holmes pastiche; you either do your best Doyle impersonation and try to write something that would be difficult to discern from something Doyle himself would have written, or you throw caution to the wind and do something completely different. I love both approaches but in the latter case I prefer it when the the characters stay true to form and it's the stories or the setting that take the brunt of the creative divergence. This is what Mann has done with <i>The Will of the Dead</i>.<br /> <br /> While the true grandfather of steampunk may be Jules Verne, Doyle and Sherlock Holmes have undoubtedly been a huge influence on the genre. In fact, Mann's Newbury and Hobbes series borrows heavily from Sherlock Holmes. It contains a brilliant detective who has a tendency to use narcotics and is heavily educated in the occult. Okay, maybe that last part doesn't fit very well, but trust me, the homage to Holmes is clear.<br /> <br /> In <i>The Will of the Dead</i>, Mann has undertaken a Sherlock Holmes story and while the use of steampunk is minimal, it's still present. Doyle purists will likely have already stopped reading, but I for one enjoy it when authors take poetic license with the Great Detective and bring some of their own creative flair to the story. If you're afraid the story is filled with steam powered cars, clockwork automatons, cyborgs, and zeppelins don't worry the only steampunk element are men in iron suits powered by steam.<br /> <br /> In fact if you took the iron men out of the book it would be a fairly traditional Sherlock Holmes story. The main story is of a missing will of a wealthy uncle, the suspect circumstances of his death, his bickering niece and nephews, and a mysterious heir to the family fortune who know one knows. And then of course there are several high profile robberies carried out in broad daylight by men in iron suits.<br /> <br /> But Mann can't resist tying in his popular steampunk series with this book by placing a younger version of the police detective from his Newbury and Hobbes stories as the police detective assigned to the case that Holmes is working on. It's a nice touch if your a fan of his other books but not distracting or obvious if you're not.<br /> <br /> So if you're a fan of steampunk and Sherlock Holmes, this is an easy recommendation. A few months ago he teamed-up with <a href="https://twitter.com/raywilcockson"><b>Ray Wilcockson</b></a> to research the virtually unknown history of African-American performers playing the Great Detective - a line of inquiry inspired by the discovery of a one reel silent film titled <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1237004/"><i>The Tale of a Chicken</i></a> (1914) - culminating in the three part essay "<a href="http://www.nplh.co.uk/2/post/2013/10/voices-from-the-darkness-african-america-sherlock-holmes.html">Voices From the Darkness: African-America & Sherlock Holmes</a>" (2013). His latest essay series is based on extensive research into silent Sherlock Holmes films seeking to answer questions like "Who were these Si-locks? What of the titles they appeared in? How did they come about?" The first part of "<a href="http://www.nplh.co.uk/uploads/7/3/3/6/7336521/silent_sherlock.pdf">Silent Sherlock: Sherlock Holmes and the Silent Film Era</a>" spans the years 1900 to 1908, beginning with the one minute Mutoscope film familiar to many Sherlockians titled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_Baffled"><i>Sherlock Holmes Baffled</i></a> (1900) - and thanks to Sherlockian Michael Pointer's rediscovery of the film in 1968, you can view this remarkable piece of Sherlockian and Film history <a href="http://youtu.be/KmffCrlgY-c">here</a> (or below). The Russian Sherlock Holmes TV series premiered this past November (16 episodes to date) and stars <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1214581/"><b>Igor Petrenko</b></a> as Sherlock Holmes and the late <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrei_Panin"><b>Andrei Panin</b></a> - the actor was <a href="http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/actor-andrei-panin-found-dead-with-head-injury/476649.html">found dead with a head injury in his Moscow apartment</a> in March of 2013 - as Doctor John Watson. The show is set in Victorian London and has a gritty, realistic feel that doesn't shy from the seedier, less picturesque side of late-19th/early 20th century urban life. As frustrating as watching the episodes are sans subtitles, I look forward to being able to properly immerse myself in this new and exciting adaptation. The Victorian fans of Holmes were not going to get that scene for ten years. It puts the wait for Sherlock into perspective doesn't it?" As much flack as Moffat receives for making BBC <i>Sherlock</i> fans wait nearly two years to find out what happened after events in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reichenbach_Fall"><i>The Reichenbach Fall</i></a>, it doesn't compare to the sheer heartlessness of ACD who left Strand readers adrift thinking that Holmes died along with Professor Moriarty. His particular specialty was Sherlockian lapel pins; he had the largest collection in the world. I think it got up to over 1,000 pins and it covered every aspect of the world of Sherlock Holmes. Like most of us, he was very social, very well liked by all who knew him and was very well respected." But the world has been waiting to discover the actual air date of BBC One's Sherlock in the United Kingdom.<br /> <br /> Until now, that is.<br /> <br /> Yesterday, a black hearse could be seen driving around London with a floral arrangement visible in the rear compartment that read: "Sherlock 01 01 14." The first episode, "The Empty Hearse," will make its way to television sets on January 1, 2014, followed by "The Sign of Three" on January 5, and concluding with "His Last Vow" on January 12. And just like that, Series 3 will be over.<br /> <br /> The plot summary for "The Empty Hearse" is as follows:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "Two years after the devastating effects of [Series 2's finale] The Reichenbach Fall, Dr. John Watson has got on with his life.
