We thought it a fitting time to reflect on some of the things we have to be thankful for in the world of Sherlock Holmes, and they are many. Whether you live in a city that is home to a venerable institution with a decades-old group of longstanding tradition or a town with a relatively new group, the autumn seems to be a time when meetings are held, toasts are recited and friendships rekindled. An upcoming PBS series will focus on how Holmes' heirs - practitioners of criminal investigation and the criminal arts - have been influenced by the Great Detective's methods.<br /> <br /> On November 19th and 26th (<a hef="http://www.tvguide.com/listings" href="http://www.pbs.org/tv_schedules/" target="_blank">please check local listings for showings in your area</a>), <a href="http://www.pbs.org/">PBS</a> will premiere <b><a href="http://www.pbs.org/about/news/archive/2013/sherlock-changed-world/"><i>How Sherlock Changed the World</i></a></b>, a two-hour special documenting Holmes' impact on real-life criminal investigation and upon forensic techniques. At a time when all that was needed to convict a criminal were eyewitness reports and blatant evidence, Holmes' method relied on more scientifically-based procedures, including fingerprinting, chemical, and blood stain identification. As forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee once stated,"Sherlock Holmes is the grandfather of forensic science," and this special attempts to justify that claim.<br /> <br /> As press materials state:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> Through the use of compelling archival material and reconstruction, <b><i>How Sherlock Changed the World</i></b> tells the true stories of the scientists, detectives and even criminals who were inspired or influenced by the legend of Holmes. Which is why those of us who have been going or who have heard about it for years are always thrilled to see the invitation arrive in the mail.<br /> <div> <br /></div> <div> An email we received from Susan Rice, BSI, 2s, ASH ("Beeswing") and Mickey Fromkin, BSI, ASH ("The Missing Three-Quarter") for the William Gillette Luncheon summed it up nicely:<br /> <div> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> Children dream of Christmas or Chanukah, gourmands long for Thanksgiving, Champagne lovers await New Year's Eve, but those who follow the Master cast their anticipation past these holidays and look forward to what we still call the birthday weekend, though it can last five days."</blockquote> <div> Of course, the BSI Dinner for many is the signature event, with its invitation-only status. And while it may be tempting <a href="http://sherlockpeoria.blogspot.com/2013/11/its-bsi-invitation-charlie-brown.html" target="_blank">to sulk for those who don't receive an invitation</a> to BSI Dinner, it's important to note that <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2013/11/master-schedule-of-events.html#sthash.cMSZvNDi.dpbs" target="_blank"><i>the</i> Weekend lasts from Wednesday to Sunday</a> and that there is only a single event that is closed to the public. Which is one of the reasons we call bsiweekend.com the <b>Baker Street Irregulars <u>and Friends</u> Weekend</b>.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> And frankly, for us, the attraction of the festivities has never been solely about the BSI Dinner. The first time we attended the dinner, it was pretty exciting, but each successive year, it's been about the entire experience of the full weekend - traveling there with friends, seeing familiar faces from a year ago, meeting up with regulars (and Irregulars), exchanging stories about families, jobs, hobbies and more. It's about cavorting with our fellow Sherlockians, regardless of who has an invitation to which dinner.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">The BSI and Friends Weekend</a> site and the <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend.html" target="_blank">Baker Street Journal</a></i> site each have information related to the activities that will be taking place in New York City in January 2014. There you'll be able to find information about all of the essential events, from the BSI Distinguished Speaker Lecture (as opposed to the BSI Distinguished Lecturer Speech) to the William Gillette Lunch, Vendors Room and BSI Reception, among others.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> And once again, the Baker Street Babes are bringing it with their second annual <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/daintiest-thing-under-a-bonnet-charity-ball-2014/" target="_blank">Daintiest Thing Under a Bonnet Charity Ball</a>, with proceeds going toward the Wounded Warrior Project. Last month, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/sherlock-series-3-game-is-on.html">PBS Masterpiece announced that the program will air in the US in Januar</a>y. But the question as to the BBC's timing has been up in the air.<br /> <br /> <a href="https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=8F269F5D-31FB-49EB-98CA-083D118A4090&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=C7F8515F-E0B1-4385-832D-F98923E1077B">The BFI will be hosting a world premiere screening</a> of Episode 1 of Series 3, titled "The Empty Hearse," on December 15, along with a panel discussion with members of the cast. BFI members can purchase tickets on November 6, and then tickets are available to the general public on November 12.<br /> <br /> It's not clear exactly when BBC One will air the show at this point, but we at least have a date for the first viewing of this long-awaited episode of <i>Sherlock</i>.<br /> <br />

We're certain that there will be a number of kitschy plastic faux-Meerschaum pipes and large houndstooth-checked deerstalkers making their way across neighborhoods.<br /> <br /> Certainly this year we're likely to see more Cumberbatch-Freeman impersonators than ever before, with long trench coats and wool jumpers within practically anyone's reach as far as shopping goes.<br /> <br /> But what about the more creative? Certainly we know that Sherlock Holmes himself was no stranger to disguise. Throughout the Canon he could be seen as a bookseller (EMPT), clergyman (SCAN), priest (FINA), workman (CHAS), groom (SCAN), opium addict (TWIS), dying man (DYIN), loafer (BERY), sailor (SIGN), Irish-American spy (LAST) and even a woman (MAZA), among others.<br /> <br /> So if Holmes could be so clever in his costume choices, where does that leave you? Perhaps as a version of the Hound of the Baskervilles, or Black Peter (assuming you can get away with carrying around a harpoon - bonus points if you do so with it sticking out of your chest). Or as Dr. Grimesby Roylott, with a snake coiled around your head.<br /> <br /> Perhaps you'd care to be someone from the unwritten tales, such as Ricoletti of the club foot (and his abominable wife), Wilson the notorious canary trainer, or James Phillimore (umbrella not required). If you're a woman you could mix metaphors and wear a nametag reading "Alicia" and have scars up and down your arms ("the cutter <i>Alicia</i>" - THOR).<br /> <br /> For our money, the most creative Sherlockian costume we've seen was some years ago at <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/10/episode-11-bob-thomalen-part-1.html" target="_blank">Autumn in Baker Street</a>, worn by our friend John Baesch, BSI ("The State and Merton County Railroad"). As you know, 1895 is a big year for Sherlockians - not only because of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/celebrate-national-poetry-day.html">the Vincent Starrett poem</a>, but because a number of tales took place that year and a good number of the untold tales were mentioned in that time.<br /> <br /> Of course the opening of "The Adventure of Black Peter" contained a wonderful paragraph that perfectly illustrates this point:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> In this memorable year '95 a curious and incongruous succession of cases had engaged his attention, ranging from his famous investigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca - an inquiry which was carried out by him at the express desire of His Holiness the Pope - down to his arrest of Wilson, the notorious canary-trainer, which removed a plague-spot from the East End of London. Close on the heels of these two famous cases came the tragedy of Woodman's Lee, and the very obscure circumstances which surrounded the death of Captain Peter Carey. No record of the doings of Mr. Sherlock Holmes would be complete which did not include some account of this very unusual affair."</blockquote> <br /> So imagine our surprise when John, a very staunch Catholic, showed up to the Gasfitters' Ball on Saturday evening at AIBS - typically a formal affair - in jeans, a baseball cap and a baseball jersey. Created by longtime Sherlockian <b><a href="https://twitter.com/darkgreendesk">Chris Redmond</a>, </b>BSI (“Billy”) - his investiture was inspired in part by his age at the time (he was just 16) - the site serves as the ultimate resource for Sherlockians, whether they’re collecting research for a journal article or neophyte Holmes enthusiasts delving for the first time into the world of Sherlock Holmes culture and scholarship. Which is why I’m thrilled beyond words to see my photo adorning the front page of Sherlockian.net! This picture was snapped by the wonderfully talented NYC Sherlockian and photographer <a href="https://twitter.com/MelindaCaric"><b>Melinda Caric</b></a> at a book release party for <a href="https://twitter.com/LyndsayFaye">Lyndsay Faye</a>'s latest novel <a href="http://amzn.to/19LJ30J" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Seven For a Secret</i></a> while I perused the Sherlockian Scholarship bookcase at the Mysterious Bookshop in downtown Manhattan. Unfortunately the edition of the book I’m holding <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1a9hOdk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Seventeen Steps to 221B</a>,</i> edited by <b>James Edward Holroyd</b>, was outside of my price range that evening but that never dampens the pure joy of holding a piece of biblio-Holmesian history. I stumbled on it while perusing Chris Redmond's recent updates to the '<a href="http://sherlockian.net/resources/index.html">Online Resources</a>' section of Sherlockian.net. Initially drawn to the intriguing cadence of “Sherlockian Sherlock Dot Com” after further exploration it is quite the promising web destination for Holmes and ACD enthusiasts. The website's editors/creators - make no mistake, Sherlockian Sherlock is an actual website and not a blog or a Web 2.0-inspired creation - have a particular fascination with Sherlock Holmes art, the dispelling of common misbeliefs related to Holmes, actors who have donned the deerstalker and the science behind the Great Detective. I encourage you to add Sherlockian-Sherlock to your bookmarks posthaste.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.neatorama.com/2013/10/17/Sherlock-Holmes-Pocket-Notebook/"><b>Neatorama</b></a> posted about a newly available Sherlock Holmes Pocket Notebook made-up of 64 pages with a very simple though elegant Sherlock design. Perfect for composing an outline for that Sherlock pastiche you’ve been meaning to write involving Holmes, the Wright Brothers, the Suez Canal and the First Pan-African Conference. A discussion of a pre-assigned story is followed by a canonical quiz, where the victors win prizes, often from London. Time permitting they screen a Granada episode, usually corresponding to the story du jour. One of the leaders of the group, Bonnie MacBird whom I had the good fortune to meet this past August in MN at <a href="http://www.norwegianexplorers.org/2013_conference.html">Sherlock Holmes Through Time and Place</a>, stresses that the group is very inclusive and welcoming.
