The award will be judged on the mentor’s commitment to bringing aspiring Sherlockians into the cause and encouraging them to find ways to keep green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. While those activities could be in the traditional realm of trifling monographs and playing The Game, we would also recognize that the effort could take place in other media and activities. </div><div><br /></div><div>To sum up who we are looking for in a few words: Someone who is generous, welcoming, and offers encouragement.</div><p><br /></p><h3>Who Is Eligible For The Award?</h3><p>The Susan Rice Mentorship Award is open to all living Sherlockians who are generous, welcoming, and offer encouragement. They will also need to have a proven record that supports that definition. No current judges or previous winners may be considered for the award. The award is not limited to members of the Baker Street Irregulars.</p><p><br /></p><h3>How Is Someone Nominated?</h3><p>The award will be given based on nominations. The nominator should complete an essay of <b>750 words or fewer </b>that answers this question: “Who do you believe should be recognized for their work in mentoring aspiring Sherlockians and why? Please provide specific examples of their guidance, encouragement, and welcoming spirit.” </p><p>Qualities to consider when nominating: Welcoming to all Sherlockians; looking out for new Sherlockians to join the ranks; encouraging involvement and guiding people through their participation; connecting new Sherlockians to current members of the BSI; believing in someone even if they don’t believe in themselves; leaving the organization better than when they joined it. </p><p>Should someone be nominated in one year and not win, they would need to be re-nominated for consideration in succeeding years.</p><p><br /></p><h3>Where Should Nominations Be Sent?</h3><p>Nominations should be sent to <a href="mailto:SusanRiceMentorAward@gmail.com">SusanRiceMentorAward@gmail.com</a>. And it premieres in St. Paul, Minnesota in October 2024.</p><p>Hatcher is known to Sherlockians for his screenplay for <i>Mr. Holmes</i> as well as two other Sherlockian plays. Hendrickson has played Sherlock Holmes on stage numerous times before with Bob Davis as his Watson. Sherlock Holmes didn't spend much time on those topics either, aside from representing the government in a handful of cases, handling a case for the pope, having a rusty memory of the Old Testament, and one well-known reverie.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But there was one story in which Sherlock Holmes dealt with both politics <b><i>and</i></b> religion.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Naval Treaty," Holmes was engaged by Percy Phelps, who had a position at the Foreign Office, thanks to his uncle, Lord Holdhurst. On Phelps's watch, a treaty between England and Italy that defined the Triple Alliance, went missing. While it was a matter of personal and professional interest to Phelps, there were political implications if the treaty were put on the open market. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In that very same story one of the most beautiful passages in the Canon has Sherlock Holmes contemplating a rose and the creator:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion,” said he, leaning with his back against the shutters. “Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. But it was Holmes's illustrators who put flesh on the bones and gave us the distinctive image that we know today.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">One of these artists was Frederic Dorr Steele, whose illustrations graced the covers and interior of <i>Collier's</i> in the early 1900s. Steele's Holmes was reminiscent of William Gillette, who first portrayed Holmes on stage in 1899 and went on to make more than 3,000 appearances as Holmes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So for American readers, Steele's illustrations helped Holmes go from image to icon. The book consists of a facsimile manuscript of the speech, together with other letters and documents, essays, and commentary from a variety of Sherlockians.</p><p>Along the way, a mystery is solved and we have the added pleasure of the writing of Cathy Miranker, Glen's wife and co-conspirator in this and the traveling exhibition of 221 objects from his collection.</p><p>Also, we have Sherlockian news, Madeline Quinones' segment "A Chance of Listening," and another <b>Canonical Couplet</b> quiz.
