Watson, M.D., he's wallowing in his situation at the Criterion. After running into his old dresser, Stamford, the latter tells Watson of a peculiar student in the chemical laboratory. Watson naturally assumes, <b><i>“A medical student, I suppose?”</i></b></div><div><br /></div><div>It's a natural question from a medical man. Stamford indicates that Holmes's bedside manner may have been less than ideal for such a profession:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes—it approaches to cold-bloodedness.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Yet in denying knowledge of Holmes's intended area of study, Stamford completely missed an opportunity as he expressed horror at Holmes's practices:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“When it comes to beating the subjects in the dissecting-rooms with a stick, it is certainly taking rather a bizarre shape.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Might this not be the makings of a future coroner? After all, when he came across dead bodies in various stories in the Canon, Holmes took great care to examine the corpses. We're told that he examined Drebber's body carefully, even sniffing the dead man's lips (STUD).</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes was able to tell that William Kirwan was shot at a distance of more than four yards, as he examined the wound on the body and noted an absence of powder-blackening on the clothes (REIG).</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, Holmes made a careful study of many dead bodies over the course of his documented career: </div><div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>The Sign of the Four</i></b> — He examines Bartholomew Sholto’s rigid body at Pondicherry Lodge.</li><li><b>"The Boscombe Valley Mystery" </b>— He studies Charles McCarthy’s body at the crime scene.</li><li><b>"Silver Blaze"</b> — He looks at the body of John Straker, the murdered trainer.</li><li><b>"The Cardboard Box"</b> — He examines the severed human ears sent in a package.</li><li>"<b>The Resident Patient"</b> — He investigates the dead body of Blessington.</li><li><b>"The Norwood Builder"</b> — He inspects Jonas Oldacre’s supposed remains (which turned out to be those of a couple of rabbits)</li><li><b>"Black Peter"</b>— He examines Peter Carey’s corpse pinned to the wall.</li><li><b>"The Abbey Grange"</b> — He views Sir Eustace Brackenstall’s murdered body.</li><li><i><b>The Valley of Fear </b></i>— He examines the body of John Douglas in Birlstone Manor.</li><li><b>"The Bruce-Partington Plans"</b> — He inspects the corpse of Cadogan West, found on the tracks of the Underground.</li></ul></div></div><div>Sherlock Holmes would have made an excellent pathologist. Spanning from <i>Tom Sawyer</i> to <i>The Complete Sherlock Holmes</i> to <i>The Essays of Francis Bacon </i>and <i>Kidnapped</i>, the book is constructed in such a way that it doesn’t require a full commitment; you can read as many or as few essays as you like at a time, and you'll still walk away satisfied.<br /><br />It’s an entire book that has no beginning, middle, or end, and is simply chapter after chapter of reveries and personal anecdotes, wrapped in the dust jacket of literature.<div><br />In his preface to Walt Whitman’s <i>Leaves of Grass</i> we find a validation of People Like Us ― people enamored with books; people who can find meaning in pages that haven't been opened for decades (or longer); people who find inspiration in nearly everything they read. In this preface wrote of one of his own favorite tributes to <i>Leaves of Grass</i>, penned by another author:<br /><blockquote>“The passage I mean was written in 1887 by Robert Louis Stevenson. His preface “<b>In Memoriam Sherlock Holmes</b>” was more than an essay summing up the 60 stories; it was an introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes devotees:</p><blockquote>“One of the blissful ways of passing an evening, when you encounter another dyed-in-the-blood addict, is to embark upon the happy discussion of minor details of Holmesiana. ‘Whose gold watch was it that had been so mishandled?’ one may ask; and the other counters with ‘What was the book that Joseph Stangerson carried in his pocket?’ Endless delicious minutiae to consider!”<div></div></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>Minutiae indeed. He was quivering with silent laughter.”</div></blockquote><div>Sherlock Holmes responded seemingly enigmatically:</div><div><blockquote>“I trust that age doth not wither nor custom stale my infinite variety.”</blockquote></div><div>What is the significance of this quote and what did Holmes mean?</div><div><br /></div><div>This was a paraphrase of a line from William Shakespeare's <i>Antony and Cleopatra</i>, when Enobarbus described the allure of the Queen of the Nile to the Roman leader:</div><div><blockquote>“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale <br />Her infinite variety”</blockquote></div><div>In the play, it meant that Cleopatra's charms were so endlessly varied that Antony could never tire of her.</div><div><br /></div><div>In our case, Holmes meant that even after a three-year hiatus, he still retained the power to surprise Watson. It is a pattern that repeated many times throughout their association in the Canon. The whole thing occurred in a moment—so quickly that I had no time to realize it. I have a vivid recollection of that instant, of Holmes’ triumphant expression and the ring of his voice, of the cabman’s dazed, savage face, as he glared at the glittering handcuffs, which had appeared as if by magic upon his wrists.”</blockquote><div><div>At the conclusion of "The Second Stain," the missing letter finds its way from Mrs. Trelawney Hope's possession back into the despatch-box. The Premier was amazed, exclaiming:  </div><blockquote><div>“But this is inconceivable—impossible. Mr. Holmes, you are a wizard, a sorcerer! How did you know it was there?”</div></blockquote></div><div>When asked by the Premier how the letter came to be in the box, Sherlock Holmes responded like any good magician, by not giving away how he did it: </div><blockquote><div>“We also have our diplomatic secrets.”</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>If Holmes had attempted these practices in earlier eras, he might not have been admired and marveled at, but under deep suspicion, as Watson told him in "A Scandal in Bohemia": </div><div><blockquote><div>“My dear Holmes this is too much. You would certainly have been burned, had you lived a few centuries ago.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>How fortunate we are that he lived in Victorian times. When Sir Hugo Baskerville, "a most wild, profane, and godless man" finds that the girl he kidnapped has made her escape, we get a sense as to his temper tantrum:</div><div><blockquote><div>"Then, as it would seem, he became as one that hath a devil, for, rushing down the stairs into the dining-hall, he sprang upon the great table, flagons and trenchers flying before him, and he cried aloud before all the company that he would that very night render his body and soul to the Powers of Evil if he might but overtake the wench. And while the revellers stood aghast at the fury of the man, one more wicked or, it may be, more drunken than the rest, cried out that they should put the hounds upon her."</div></blockquote></div><div>One has to imagine such a fellow as employing a few choice invectives.</div><div><br /></div><div>And although there are no profanities—even the use of "bloody" is reserved for actual sanguinary events—there are a number of insults that are peddled. </div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes himself is the subject of many of these, usually uttered by frustrated antagonists. We find a mixed bag.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes as an Excuse</h3><div>Let's begin with father figures. Who can you think of that, when brought to justice, claimed they were only joking?</div><div><br /></div><div>The first is a stepfather, who, in collusion with Mary Sutherland's mother, duped her into believing Hosmer Angel was a real suitor in "A Case of Identity": </div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“It was only a joke at first,” groaned our visitor.</div><div>“We never thought that she would have been so carried away.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>In "The Norwood Builder," Jonas Oldacre was smoked out of his hiding place after John Hector McFarlane was accused of his murder:</div><div></div><blockquote><div>The wretched creature began to whimper.</div><div>“I am sure, sir, it was only my practical joke.”</div></blockquote></div><div>And later, has he was being taken away by Inspector Lestrade: </div><div><blockquote><div>“It was a joke, my good sir, a practical joke, nothing more,” he whined incessantly. “I assure you, sir, that I simply concealed myself in order to see the effect of my disappearance, and I am sure that you would not be so unjust as to imagine that I would have allowed any harm to befall poor young Mr. McFarlane.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>In order to dismiss any fear her husband might have or keep him from harm, Elsie Cubitt claimed that the dancing men cipher was a joke: </div><blockquote><div>“She answered that it was some senseless practical joke, and that I should not take any notice of it.” </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes Eliminated as Motives</h3><div>There are also instances of jokes being eliminated as a motive in certain dire circumstances.</div><div><br /></div><div>When he awoke to find the house abandoned in "Wisteria Lodge," John Scott Eccles told Holmes:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I was furious. In 1930 he drew a cartoon depicting himself as “The Old Horse,” pulling a wagon loaded with memories. This talk explores his life’s work, underscoring the characteristic decisions which made it uniquely memorable. Also <i>Investigating Sherlock Holmes</i> (with Hartley R. Nathan). He is currently editing <i>Rodney Stone</i> for the Edinburgh New Critical Editions Arthur Conan Doyle Project. </div><div><br /></div><div>His Doylean writing has been published in such places as <i>Journal of Olympic History</i>, <i>Finest Hour</i> (magazine of the International Churchill Society), <i>Journal of the Oscar Wilde Society</i> and <i>Green Bag Almanac and Reader</i>. Doyle was perhaps an unlikely champion for divorce reform which had historically been the preserve of radical thinkers from the feminist and atheist margins. Yet the unpopular divorce reforms of the 1890s helped to assemble a diverse coalition to argue for a complete reformulation and destigmatization of marriage dissolution. Debates on this topic in Britain help to reveal Conan Doyle’s key role in the fraught transition away from deep-seated Victorian attitudes on the subject. The issue formed a crucial part of his developing views on a number of issues including home rule for Ireland, free trade and female suffrage.</div><div><br /> Dr. Jonathan Cranfield is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University. There is a whole Sherlockian industry devoted to errors in the Sherlock Holmes stories, but what about when he was writing non-fiction, as in his collection of essays called <i>Through the Magic Door</i>, a collection of charming observations about literature, boxing, and Napoleon, in which Conan Doyle recounts a series of anecdotes about Thomas Carlyle, Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell, and himself. Often the anecdotes are wrong. And then there are his quotations: often they are wrong too.</div><div><br /> Does it matter? Should we not worry unnecessarily about precision when listening to a good story? What did Doyle himself think? In this talk, Goldfab will explore the errors and the rationale for them, and see if we should care about whether Thomas Carlyle bought a whole set of Gibbon to start his private library.</div><div><br /> Sheldon Goldfarb is editing <i>Through the Magic Door</i> for the new Edinburgh University Press edition of the works of Conan Doyle. It's the day we honor those who have fallen in the line of duty to their country.<div><br /></div><div>The British of Sherlock Holmes's time were no strangers to war; in fact, John H. Watson, MD was a military man who undoubtedly saw his fair share of death when he was overseas.</div><div><br /></div><div>And the Canon mentions its share of wars — the Crimean War (GLOR, LADY), the Second Afghan War (SIGN), the U.S. Civil War (FIVE, CARD), the great war of Napoleon (SIXN), the Franco-Prussian War (NOBL), potential war in Europe if a document wasn't recovered (SECO), the Civil War involving Charles I (VALL), the Boer War (BLAN), and of course what would eventually become known as World War I (LAST).</div><div><br /></div><div>And then of course, there is the unfortunate Colonel James Barclay, who died not in the line of duty, but nevertheless died as a military man, felled by a just providence decades after he sent his romantic rival, Corporal Henry Wood, into harm's way in "The Crooked Man." Barclay must have assumed that Wood perished in the arranged ambush, but we all know the rest of that story...<br /><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In just about every country in the world, we can count the honored dead who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
