I get in the dumps at times, and don’t open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and I’ll soon be right. What have you to confess now? It’s just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.”</div><div><br /></div><div>I laughed at this cross-examination. “I keep a bull pup,” I said, “and I object to rows because my nerves are shaken, and I get up at all sorts of ungodly hours. and I am extremely lazy. I have another set of vices when I’m well, but those are the principal ones at present.”</div></blockquote><div></div><div>That first phrase, “I keep a bull pup,” has puzzled scholars for decades. Three separate explanations have been offered as to what it might be:</div><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>A dog</li><li>A pistol</li><li>A quick temper </li></ol></div></div><div style="text-align: left;">We have a strong preference for #3. Here's why.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Holmes was attached by a bull-terrier while at university. We have to imagine that a strange dog might be a deal-breaker in a new arrangement with a flatmate. Not to mention that it's highly unlikely that Watson, recently discharged, injuries, and living in a hotel, would have a dog.</li><li>Since when would a pistol (at least in Victorian London) be considered a shortcoming? After all, Watson is a former army man.</li><li>The previous paragraph of Holmes's shortcomings were all personality-based. It seems only logical that Watson would have followed up similarly, referring to a personality trait rather than a physical object. The award will be judged on the mentor’s commitment to bringing aspiring Sherlockians into the cause and encouraging them to find ways to keep green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. While those activities could be in the traditional realm of trifling monographs and playing The Game, we would also recognize that the effort could take place in other media and activities. </div><div><br /></div><div>To sum up who we are looking for in a few words: Someone who is generous, welcoming, and offers encouragement.</div><p><br /></p><h3>Who Is Eligible For The Award?</h3><p>The Susan Rice Mentorship Award is open to all living Sherlockians who are generous, welcoming, and offer encouragement. They will also need to have a proven record that supports that definition. No current judges or previous winners may be considered for the award. The award is not limited to members of the Baker Street Irregulars.</p><p><br /></p><h3>How Is Someone Nominated?</h3><p>The award will be given based on nominations. The nominator should complete an essay of <b>750 words or fewer </b>that answers this question: “Who do you believe should be recognized for their work in mentoring aspiring Sherlockians and why? Please provide specific examples of their guidance, encouragement, and welcoming spirit.” </p><p>Qualities to consider when nominating: Welcoming to all Sherlockians; looking out for new Sherlockians to join the ranks; encouraging involvement and guiding people through their participation; connecting new Sherlockians to current members of the BSI; believing in someone even if they don’t believe in themselves; leaving the organization better than when they joined it. </p><p>Should someone be nominated in one year and not win, they would need to be re-nominated for consideration in succeeding years.</p><p><br /></p><h3>Where Should Nominations Be Sent?</h3><p>Nominations should be sent to <a href="mailto:SusanRiceMentorAward@gmail.com">SusanRiceMentorAward@gmail.com</a>. Oh sure, the crimes would be revealed, but the methods were more opaque.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Holmes showed his disdain for literary detectives:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><blockquote><div>“Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends’ thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour’s silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as Poe appeared to imagine.”</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in <a href="https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/sir-arthur-conan-doyle-interview-1927/" target="_blank">a famous 1927 newsreel</a>, indicated his own dissatisfaction with the mysterious methods of such sleuths:</div><blockquote>“I used occasionally to read detective stories, it often annoyed me how in the old-fashioned detective story the detective always seemed to get at his results either by some sort of lucky chance or fluke, or else it was quite unexplained how he got there. He got there but he never gave an explanation how. Now that didn't seem to me quite playing the game. It seemed to me that he's bound to give his reasons why he came to his conclusions.” </blockquote><blockquote>“But when I began thinking about this, I began to think of turning scientific methods, as it were, onto the work of detection...I had as it were, a new idea of the detective and one which it interested me to work out. Philip Purser-Hallard, that's who. </p><p>I picked up <i><a href="https://amzn.to/44djHsp" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: The Spider's Web</a></i> because I'd read and enjoyed some of Purser-Hallard's writings on <i>Doctor Who</i>. I was pleasantly surprised to find an authentic-feeling novel with quite the deductions. </p><p>Then a body is found at the Moncrieff house during a ball, and in wanders the cast of <i><b><a href="https://amzn.to/3KO7vr6" target="_blank">The Importance of Being Earnest</a></b></i>. It's all the more complicated when the dead man is claimed to be Bunbury. The case that unfolds is one based on gossip and blackmail, as suits the characters. </p><p>I suspect many of you will already know whether you want to read this at this point, whether or not I continue to say that the book is entertaining, with a deft balance between Wilde's facetiousness and Doyle's adventure. Stoddart</b>, editor of <i>Lippincott's Monthly</i>, on 30 August 1889. It marked the first meeting between Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde and eventually resulted in <i>The Sign of Four</i> and <i>The Picture of Dorian Gray</i>, both initially published in <i>Lippincott's</i>.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">The Adventures Continue</h3><p>After this book, Purser-Hallard wrote <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3spmOzY" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: Masters of Lies</a></i>, a wonderfully twisty double-cross on the reader. Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Mycroft Holmes investigate the suicide of a supposed spy, caught up with various document forgeries. It came out from Titan in May 2022. Now, these are a really very fine series of portraits.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">While Sir Henry professes not to know much about art, he has studied up on his ancestors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I don’t pretend to know much about these things, and I’d be a better judge of a horse or a steer than of a picture. They are all family portraits, I presume?”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Every one.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />“Do you know the names?”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />“Barrymore has been coaching me in them, and I think I can say my lessons fairly well.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The names of the artists indicate that the Baskerville family must have been particularly wealthy. Kneller was <b>Sir Godfrey Kneller, Baronet</b> (1646–1723), who was the leading Baroque portraitist in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Kneller did portraits of many British admirals, and it is tempting to think he may have been the artist behind the painting of “Rear-Admiral Baskerville, who served under Rodney in the West Indies.” However, Admiral George Brydges Rodney didn't take command in the West Indies until the mid-18th century.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Reynolds was <b>Sir Joshua Reynolds</b> (1723–1792), one of the major European painters of the 18th century known particularly for his portraits. He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. With the Baskervilles, he may have had quite a bit to work with.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">That's a lot for Sir Henry, who spent most of his time in the States and Canada, to take in. But he must have been a diligent student, as he knew this would be his life's work. </div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
