“I have my old favourite” [3GAR]
It's hard to believe, but next year — 2024 — will mark the 40th anniversary of the premiere of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Granada TV.
The series was part of a resurgence of Sherlock Holmes interest that carried over from the 1970s, with The Seven Per-Cent Solution in 1976 and Murder By Decree in 1979.
Then, the early 1980s featured not one but two productions of The Hound of the Baskervilles — one starring Tom Baker and another starring Ian Richardson, who also followed with a version of The Sign of Four.
But it was Michael Cox's production efforts on behalf of Granada TV that resulted in one of the most iconic Sherlock Holmes portrayals of the era. Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and David Burke as Dr. Watson (portrayed by Edward Hardwicke in later episodes), we were treated to lavish productions that were mostly faithful to the original stories, with set designs, costumes, and locations that made the stories spring from the page.
