Like the modern-day television actor, he played Sherlock Holmes in over 40 films.</p><p>But you know him as Eille Norwood.</p><p>Most of his Sherlock Holmes films from the 1920s remain hidden from the public, so when the British Film Institute announced a major restoration project, we called Russell Merritt, BSI ("The Trepoff Murder") to enlighten us.</p><p>Russell is a silent film scholar, having recently retired from the University of California, Berkley as a professor of film. He was actively involved in the restoration of other recently discovered silent Sherlock Holmes films such as William Gillette's 1916 <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> and the German <i>Der Hund der Baskervilles</i> from 1929.</p><p>Together, we go behind the scenes of the Norwood films — a drama itself — and cover the Clive Brook film, as well as Russell's Holy Grail of lost Sherlock Holmes films.</p><p>And of course, we have another <b>Canonical Couplet</b> to challenge your acuity. Even Inspector Stanley Hopkins, no stranger to Holmes and his methods, said this about him:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I believe that you are a wizard, Mr. Holmes. I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human.” [ABBE]</div></blockquote></div><div>When Holmes took the effort to explain his reasoning—to a client like Jabez Wilson in "The Red-Headed League," for example—the magic vanished and it approached common sense:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“I thought at first that you had done something clever, but I see that there was nothing in it, after all.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>When it comes to terminology, however, it is interesting to note that Sherlock Holmes himself never refers to his own methods as simply "common sense."</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, as we look across the Canon, the term "common sense" is applied—almost universally—as a pejorative when pointing out the official police and their methods.</div><div><br /></div><div>In <i>The Sign of Four</i>, Athleney Jones self-identifies with that thread of thought: </div><div><blockquote><div>“Well, well, if it was fastened the steps could have nothing to do with the matter. That’s common sense. Man might have died in a fit; but then the jewels are missing. Ha! I have a theory. These flashes come upon me at times...Let us apply common sense to the matter.”</div></blockquote></div><div>Ironically, it was Jones who called the master "Mr. Sherlock Holmes the theorist" just a few moments before that statement.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sergeant Wilson of the Sussex Constabulary is with Mrs. Douglas and Cecil Barker at the scene of the crime in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, his "slow, bucolic common sense was still pondering the open window."</div><div><br /></div><div>Later, Inspector MacDonald can't seem to wrap his head around the facts:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Oh, man, it’s just inconceivable! It’s clean against common sense! I put it to you, Mr. Holmes, judging it by what we have heard.”</div></blockquote></div><div>To the unnamed inspector in "The Three Gables," Sherlock Holmes remarked, "What rugged common sense!"</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes valued common sense in his own realm, but was hailed for his analytical reasoning. By putting his professional competition on the plane of common sense, he was able to devalue it and make them seem less capable (not that they needed help) by calling them out for their pedestrian thinking.</div><div><br /></div><div>Meanwhile, at Baker Street Elementary, we find the non-sensical accompanying the common sensical...</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; It immortalizes that famous greeting.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“My experience of camp life in Afghanistan” [BOSC]</h3><p>Since Afghanistan is in the news again, we thought it might be worthwhile to reflect on it briefly.</p><p>We're already familiar with that very first greeting. It is the seminal basis of one of the greatest partnerships in literary history. Watson had returned from war, a wounded veteran, looking for a flatmate.</p><p>Holmes's explanation later on gave us a taste of how he arrived at his seemingly magical conclusion:</p><blockquote><p>“I knew you came from Afghanistan. From long habit the train of thoughts ran so swiftly through my mind, that I arrived at the conclusion without being conscious of intermediate steps. There were such steps, however. The train of reasoning ran, ‘Here is a gentleman of a medical type, but with the air of a military man. Clearly an army doctor, then. He has just come from the tropics, for his face is dark, and that is not the natural tint of his skin, for his wrists are fair. He has undergone hardship and sickness, as his haggard face says clearly. His left arm has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and unnatural manner. Where in the tropics could an English army doctor have seen much hardship and got his arm wounded? Clearly in Afghanistan.’ The whole train of thought did not occupy a second. I then remarked that you came from Afghanistan, and you were astonished.”</p></blockquote><p>England was no stranger to war in Afghanistan (nor, indeed, was Afghanistan a stranger to war). There were a number of Anglo-Afghan wars in the span of 100 years, most notably from 1839-1842 and 1878-1880.</p><p>Watson reached his regiment (the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers) safely in Kandahar, before being attached to the Berkshires. Indeed, the very first episode, <i>A Study in Pink</i>, was a play on <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>.</p><p>Here we find an army doctor, recently returned from war in—you guessed it, Afghanistan—who was looking to ground himself in London. Over to Bart's (which would figure frequently throughout the series), where he was introduced to Sherlock Holmes whose observations were once again uncannily accurate.</p><p>Lo and behold, the British (and other NATO forces, supporting the United States) were once again engaged in a long-term war in Afghanistan. The narrative fit perfectly with the repetitious nature of military engagements in the country.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I endeavored to interest him in Afghanistan” [NAVA]</h3><p>This is not a modern phenomenon, either.</p><p>Alexander the Great arrived in the area of Afghanistan in 330 BCE after defeating Darius III of Persia a year earlier at the Battle of Gaugamela.  His army faced very strong resistance in the Afghan tribal areas where he is said to have commented that Afghanistan is "easy to march into, hard to march out of." (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Afghanistan#Alexander_and_the_Seleucids" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</p><p>For as long as outside forces have been trying to form alliances and cohesiveness in Afghanistan, the internal forces have been fighting and rejecting them.</p><p><br /></p><p>Perhaps we should remember Holmes's words in Chapter 3 of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>:</p><blockquote><p>“Read it up—you really should. Alfred Prufrock</a>" in high school, and you may remember that its author was T. S. Eliot, who also wrote "Four Quartets," "Murder in the Cathedral," "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," and much more. <div><br /></div><div>Eliot was born in St. Louis in the fall of 1888, during the season of London's Jack the Ripper murders, and (according to some chronologists) simultaneous with the Baskerville hound case on Dartmoor. He moved to London as a young man, turned British, and lived until the early days of 1965, when the musical "Baker Street" was in Boston tryouts before its Broadway run. From the early career of Holmes himself to the first murmurings of the Great Sherlock Holmes Boom a lifetime later, in fact. <br /><br /> Scholars both Sherlockian and academic have repeatedly pointed out connections between the canons of Sherlock and Prufrock, starting at least as far back as a brief item in the journal <i>Notes and Queries</i> in 1948. Vernon S. Goslin wrote in <i>The Sherlock Holmes Journal</i> in 1965, noting Eliot's death, that "Conan Doyle and Eliot share the same poetry of outer London." </div><div><br /></div><div>One issue later, A. D. Henriksen had a full-length article in the <i>SHJ</i> discussing Eliot's own 1928 essay about the Sherlock Holmes tales. (See also "<a href="https://crimereads.com/t-s-eliot-crime-fiction-critic/" target="_blank">T.S. Eliot, Crime Fiction Critic</a>" on CrimeReads)<br /><br /><br /> Your high school teacher, explaining "Prufrock" (or, more ambitiously, "The Waste Land"), probably did not point out that several of Eliot's works contain blatant references to the stories of Sherlock Holmes. </div><div><br /></div><div>The most widely known of these is the verse about Macavity, the Mystery Cat, who bears a strong resemblance to the late Professor James Moriarty, to the point that the musical "Cats," based on Eliot's poems, belongs in a comprehensive Sherlockian collection. "East Coker," the second of the Four Quartets, is notable for turning a canonical place name into a common noun: "On the edge of a grimpen, where is no secure foothold." <br /><br /> And in "Murder in the Cathedral," a considerable passage from "The Musgrave Ritual" — literally from the questions and answers of the ritual — is quoted in a quite different context, a duel of words between Archbishop Thomas à Becket and the Tempter who is trying his soul. </div><div><br /></div><div>One of the great Sherlockians, Nathan L. Bengis, went to the horse's mouth about these lines, and was able to report in <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> in 1951 that Eliot himself said the borrowing was "deliberate and wholly conscious."</div><div><br /></div><blockquote><div>"Who shall have it? He who will come. What shall be the month? The last from the first. What shall we give for it? Pretence of priestly power." </div></blockquote><div><br /> So what about Prufrock and his love song? </div><div><br /></div><div>There is nothing that blatant, but it is not hard to read the whole 140-line poem as a Sherlockian work — a slightly surrealist pastiche, let's say. Eliot wrote this "love song" in 1910-1911, less than a decade after Sherlock Holmes's apparent retirement from active practice, and exactly contemporary with the publication of such canonical tales as "The Devil's Foot," "The Red Circle," and "Lady Frances Carfax." (It was actually published in 1915.)</div><div><br /> When it speaks of "the yellow fog" and "the soot that falls from chimneys," it is talking about the London that Holmes and Watson knew, and "the smoke that rises from the pipes of lonely men in shirt-sleeves" could be their very smoke.</div><div><br /></div><div>Prufrock, like Holmes, walks through London's "streets that follow like a tedious argument of insidious intent to lead you to an overwhelming question." The reader is not to ask what the question actually is, says Prufrock, but I think we know:</div><div><br />"What did you do with the bodies?"<br /><br /> And when Prufrock speaks of being "formulated, sprawling on a pin… pinned and wriggling on the wall," how can one not think of Peter Carey? Or, indeed, of Jack Stapleton: "A pin, a cork, and a card, and we add him to the Baker Street collection!" </div><div><br /></div><div>Many other lines in the poem have canonical connections, and the narrative of an aging, insecure man wishing but not daring to present himself as a lover might have an echo here and there. "There will be time," says Prufrock,</div><div><blockquote> there will be time<br /> To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;<br /> There will be time to murder and create. </blockquote><br />And it seems clear that what Eliot created more than a hundred years ago came in part from Sherlock Holmes. </div><div><br /></div><div>--</div><div><br /></div><br /></div>

I could imagine his giving a friend a little pinch of the latest vegetable alkaloid, not out of malevolence, you understand, but simply out of a spirit of inquiry in order to have an accurate idea of the effects. To do him justice, I think that he would take it himself with the same readiness. He appears to have a passion for definite and exact knowledge.”</div></blockquote></div><div>And of course, over the course of his time with Watson, Holmes continued pursue knowledge via experiments.</div><div><br /></div><div>The opening scene of "The Naval Treaty," for example, finds Holmes at work on a chemical investigation at his side-table:</div><div><div>A formidable array of bottles and test-tubes, with the pungent cleanly smell of hydrochloric acid, told me that he had spent his day in the chemical work which was so dear to him.<br />“Well, have you solved it?” I asked as I entered.<br />“Yes. It was the bisulphate of baryta.”</div><div><br /></div><div>In "A Case of Identity," Holmes's attention was so taken by his experiments that he missed the point of Watson's question about his progress on the case:</div><div><blockquote><div>A formidable array of bottles and test-tubes, with the pungent cleanly smell of hydrochloric acid, told me that he had spent his day in the chemical work which was so dear to him. </div></blockquote><blockquote><div> “Well, have you solved it?” I asked as I entered. </div></blockquote><blockquote><div>“Yes. Some consider puns to be the lowest form of humor. We disagree; we can find many other forms of humor that are low. (Many happen daily in our household that includes two teenage boys.)</div><div><br /></div><div>When you consider it, a pun – also known as paronomasia, a form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term, or of similar-sounding words – is a high form of humor, as it requires not only an understanding of the English language, but also a quick wit when sparring with other punsters in real-time.</div><div><br /></div><div>We've run across a number of Sherlockians who enjoy <strike>torturing</strike> entertaining others with their puns. The sport seems to have two elements: self-satisfaction in being so deft with words, and the pain inflicted on unsuspecting and unwilling participants.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is even a level of competition, as punsters try to one-up each others. We once entered ten puns in a contest, hoping one would win. But no pun in ten did.</div><div><br /></div><div>Take care, as you never know where a pun may hit you (hopefully your funny bone). As you seek them out and happen to get hit in the head with a book, you'll only have your shelf to blame.</div><div><br /></div><div>A late Baker Street Irregular, Norman Davis ("The Grosvenor Square Furniture Van") used to issue a newsletter called <i>Pun My Word</i> from The Pawky Humorists. You know the ones:</p><blockquote><p>"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."</p></blockquote><blockquote><p>"To Sherlock Holmes, she is always <i>the</i> woman."</p></blockquote><blockquote><p>"...the curious incident of the dog in the night-time"</p></blockquote><p>For those who cannot get enough of these quotes (and many others), there's always <b><a href="https://ihose.co/ihose181" target="_blank">The Daily Sherlock Holmes</a></b>.</p><p>The challenge for finding some of these quotes is the method for locating them is not consistent. Whether using the Doubleday <i>Complete Sherlock Holmes</i> (single or double volume edition), <i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i> (Baring-Gould or Klinger), the <i>Crowborough Edition</i>, the <i>Author's Edition</i>, or some other source, we're left with a jumble of page numbers when it comes to finding a quote.</p><p>The answer to that conundrum has arrived.</p><p>Paul Thomas Miller (who joined us for <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose172" target="_blank">Episode 172</a> of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere) has developed <b><a href="https://chapterandverseholmes.co.uk/" target="_blank">Chapter and Verse Holmes</a></b>. His concept is simple:</p><blockquote><p>"...to provide a system whereby specific sentences in The Canon could referenced easily, modelled on the chapter and verse system of the Christian Bible."</p></blockquote><p>So, Paul developed a system in which he broke the Canon down, chapter by chapter, sentence by sentence, and incorporated <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/p/title-abbreviations.html#.YOxqNuhKjb0" target="_blank">the Jay Finley Christ abbreviations</a>. The format is straightforward:</p><p>[STORY CODE] [CHAPTER NUMBER]:[VERSE NUMBER]</p><p>So, the above quotes would be sourced as follows:</p><blockquote><p>"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." — SIGN 6:59</p></blockquote><blockquote><p>"To Sherlock Holmes, she is always <i>the</i> woman." — SCAN 1</p></blockquote><blockquote><p>"...the curious incident of the dog in the night-time" — SILV 455</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>There are two versions of <b><a href="https://chapterandverseholmes.co.uk/" target="_blank">Chapter and Verse Holmes</a></b> for use: one that respects U.S. copyright (and therefore excludes the six stories from <i>The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes</i> that are still under copyright) and one for the rest of the world.</p><p>This may help narrow things down for scholars, researchers, and even new acolytes of the Sherlock Holmes canon.</p><p><br /></p><p>--</p><p><br /></p>

Presumably, then, the young man had one."</div></blockquote><div><br /> It should be obvious to a Watson — even to a Lestrade — that this deduction is simply wrong. Indeed, it turns out that West never had a ticket, for the simple reason that he never was a passenger. Through the trick known nowadays in New York as <a href="https://draft.blogger.com/#">turnstile-hopping</a>, or through corruption by a friendly and negligent employee. </div><div><br /></div><div>Regardless of the Metropolitan Railway's security measures and the vigilance of its guards, there must have been many attempts every day, some of them successful, to sneak onto a platform, and thence onto a train, without buying a ticket.</div><div><br /> Is it possible that Holmes, whose usual fare included jewel thefts, murdered baronets, and vanishing steamships, remained blissfully unaware of petty crime and twopenny fraud? The man who claimed to have "an exact knowledge of London" must surely have had some knowledge of pickpocketing, prostitution, drunkenness, random violence, and the thousand little cheats by which the poorer classes got by. </div><div><br /></div><div>No doubt Watson's delicacy excised these phenomena from the records of Holmes's cases. The acute observer will notice "a little knot of roughs" and a broken window at the corner of Goodge Street in "The Blue Carbuncle," and of course the fraudulent beggar Hugh Boone in "The Man with the Twisted Lip," but it is difficult to think of many other examples. </div><div><br /></div><div>The official police had to pay attention to such matters, but Holmes was in a position to overlook them, or at least to delegate them to his ragamuffin Irregulars, and Watson clearly did not wish to bring them to his readers' attention. <br /><br /> The remarkable discrepancy between London crime (and London life) as a whole, and the more affluent and sanitized portion of it that was of interest to Sherlock Holmes, has of course often been noticed. Mostly we attribute it to class bias. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Holmes who airily commented in "The Noble Bachelor" about the quality of his incoming correspondence — "the humbler are usually the more interesting" — did not generally walk the talk: his known cases involve, if not royalty and aristocracy, at least the respectable members of the middle class. If they are financially embarrassed it is frequently because they have spent their fortunes, like Sir Robert Norberton of "Shoscombe Old Place."<br /><br /> Admittedly, Hall Pycroft of "The Stock-Broker's Clerk" has never been wealthy, but he is a self-respecting member of the clerical class, who probably read Watson's narratives in the <i>Strand </i>magazine once he had caught up on the day's stock market news. </div><div><br /></div><div>Even while employed, he might have found it expedient to join a goose club like Henry Baker, paying so many pence a week toward the year-end luxury of a Christmas dinner, and once out of a situation he quickly found it difficult to make ends meet, but he would never have fit with that knot of street-corner roughs. <br /><br /> Cadogan West, the young man who died on the Underground without even the solace of a ticket on his person, was of a similar occupational class, though more financially secure. In the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> for Autumn 2013 ("Short Sentences: Deductions from a Few Words in 'The Bruce-Partington Plans'"), I noted that his fiancée, Violet Westbury, was telling Holmes no more than the truth when she described his salary as "ample." </div><div><br /></div><div>Judging from available information about the pay scales for government clerks, West probably earned about £300 a year, or 50 percent more than Hall Pycroft's £200. In current US dollar buying power, the equivalent would be about $40,000. <br /><br /> In other words, at the age of 27, he was earning close to the median annual income currently enjoyed in the United States, and he had it tax-free since British income tax in the 1890s did not touch middle-class earners. </div><div><br /></div><div>If West's needs were indeed "simple," as Violet Westbury also tells Holmes, he must have been well able to support himself and comfortably anticipate taking a wife. Sherlock Holmes did not have most of this information at the time of his exchange with Watson about the missing ticket, but perhaps he jumped to a conclusion from the simple knowledge that Cadogan West was a government employee. <br /><br /> Apparent respectability, however, is no guarantee, as Britain's Financial Conduct Authority discovered in December 2014 when it was found necessary to ban a London hedge fund manager from the finance industry <a href="https://draft.blogger.com/#">after he was found to have evaded £42,000 in commuter fares</a>. <br /><br />--</div><div><br /></div>
