Usually we see women in the Canon through the stacked perspectives of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and his literary agent, Arthur Conan Doyle. <br />
<br />
The variety of authors in <a href="https://amzn.to/2VcP46C"><i>Villains,Victims, and Violets: Agency and Feminism in the Original Sherlock Holmes Canon</i></a> (A Studious Scarlets Society Anthology) bid the women in the Canon to step out from the pages, out of the mist and let us examine them in their full dimension in the context of their times. <br />
<br />
Although I tend to disagree with the book's promotional description implying that scholarly writers have exhausted the topics of the Canon from Sherlock Holmes' perspective, this is a welcome addition to Sherlockian scholarship. <br />
<br />
The entries in the anthology are grouped into five sections, based on facets of women's agency in the stories and society. The third section is an interlude, with a refreshing letter to Watson penned by "Lady Trelawney Hope" offering her views and the reasons behind her actions during "The Adventure of the Second Stain."<br />
<br />
The actions of the women are discussed, often presenting insightful alternate views of their motivations. The examination of some women is eye-opening. It is interesting how many women who, while at the heart of investigations, never spoke for themselves in the Canon.  <br />
<br />
Women's agency in Victorian England is certainly a factor in all the stories. The morality expected by Victorian and Edwardian readers must always have been in Conan Doyle's mind. Readers would expect praise and reward to come to those modest home-centered women who do as they should, serving husband and family.<br />
<br />
The women who have taken it upon themselves to step out of their meek home-oriented life to become active partners in solving their own cases are more remarkable. While Holmes defended those who were truly victims, he showed great respect for those who did show agency. This is certainly reflected as their own words are more often quoted in the Canon.<br />
<br />
An anthology is always a major undertaking, and Haile and Bower have been successful at it. There are a variety of contributors with different styles. The majority of the entries in this anthology are well constructed, well supported and are thought provoking. They support their views with data from the Canon as well as with information about the society of the time.<br />
<br />
Most of the authors take us along with them to explore the range of motivations of the female figures that have so little voice, or none at all, in their own stories. Some share the remarkable women who find their voice and act on their own behalf to influence the outcomes of their situation. There are a few entries that include a tedious, lengthy retelling of a whole tale's plot. I would always prefer an author's original content to a string of direct quotes.<br />
<br />
This anthology of women's agency in the Canon is as relevant and welcome now as it would have been during the Women's Rights movement in the 1960's. Hopefully, before long, the issues of a lack of agency will be viewed as historic rather than current.<br />
<br />
The next time I reread the Canon, I will be definitely be looking more closely at the presentation of the women and their roles in their own stories. Just one of the things that I will be pondering for a good long time is just what name Holmes used when he signed the Adler-Norton marriage license as a witness.<br />

As you no doubt have noticed today is 2/21 (for those who write dates in the style of DD/MM). That corresponds to 221B — get it?<br />
<br />
As such, we thought it was an apt time to take a look back at a January 2010 entry in  <i>Smithsonian</i>: "<a href="http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/Sherlock-Holmes-London.html">Sherlock Holmes' London</a>."<br />
<br />
The piece opens with a description of a 30 year-old Arthur Conan Doyle heading into London from his Southsea home to attend a dinner with the publisher of <i>Lippincott's</i> with none other than Oscar Wilde in attendance. The dinner was auspicious in that it resulted in two commissions: Wilde's <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/2v5NFUr">The Picture of Dorian Gray</a></i></b> and Conan Doyle's <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/2umxnX6">The Sign of Four</a></i></b>. But for the purpose of the article, it was even more significant that it took place at the Langham Hotel, which itself turned up in no fewer than three Sherlock Holmes stories (Quick! Which three? Comments below, please.).<br />
<br />
The article covers a bit about Conan Doyle's life and the ongoing life that has sprung from his most famous creation, but then also covers another character in his stories — one that plays a constant supporting, if transparent, role: the city itself. Conan Doyle's mastery of the language in order to effectively set the scene is readily observed in this passage from The Sign of Four - that novel born from the very dinner at the Langham:<br />
<blockquote>
"It was a September evening, and not yet seven o'clock, but the day had been a dreary one, and a dense drizzly fog lay low upon the great city. Mud-coloured clouds drooped sadly over the muddy streets. Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light, which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement. The yellow glare from the shop-windows streamed out into the steamy, vaporous air, and threw a murky, shifting radiance across the crowded thoroughfare. There was, to my mind, something eerie and ghost-like in the endless procession of faces which flitted across these narrow bars of light - sad faces and glad, haggard and merry. Like all human kind, they flitted from the gloom into the light, and so back into the gloom once more."</blockquote>
And while those ghostly gas-lamps no longer fail at 20 feet, the piece takes us through London past and present, through the Holmes stories and Conan Doyle's life. Naturally, there's a stop at 221B. The Baker Street Irregulars' publishing efforts go back many decades, beginning in the 1940s with the BSJ and then adding red-backed books that were either originals by Edgar W. Bell's <i>Baker Street Studies</i>, Vincent Starrett's <i>221B: Studies in Sherlock Holmes</i>, T.S. Blakeney's <i>Sherlock Holmes: Fact or Fiction</i>, and the like.<br />

In the late 1980s, the BSI Press returned to full force with the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/history/">BSI History Series</a>, in which Jon Lellenberg began telling the history of the early days of the Baker Street Irregulars. The five volumes were also red paperbacks, like their predecessors. Other volumes, including biographies have been added as well.<br />
<br />
Then, in the early 2000s, the BSI Press began its <i>furor scribendi</i> with the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/manuscript/">Manuscript Series</a> and the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/international/">International Series</a>. Later, the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/professions/">Professions Series</a> and event-based publications rounded out the offerings.<br />
<br />
To date, there have been more than 60 volumes published by the BSI Press.<br />

The sport of kings horse racing is part of the Sherlock Holmes lore. It's also part of a tradition in Sherlockian events going back some 70 years.<br />

The BSI Press has issued a new book, <i><a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2019/12/26/upon-the-turf/">Upon the Turf</a></i>, that is a comprehensive look at horse racing in the Canon, Victorian England, and the Baker Street Irregulars, as well as associated topics such as gambling, drugs (quite an associated set of vices!), the law, art, and history.<br />
<br />
Candace J. Lewis, BSI ("A Little Art Jargon") and Ira Brad Matetsky ("The Final Problem"), together with Roger Donway, edited this volume related to horses and horse racing. Candy and Ira join us to talk about the inspiration behind the volume and our own Burt Wolder describes his contribution to the scholarship.<br />

The <b>Canonical Couplet</b> is back, and the prize for this episode is a copy of the BSI Press booklet <i>Commissionaire: Julian Wolff and his Baker Street Irregulars</i> by Sonia Fetherston. It's not an understatement to say that we don't see print editions of newspapers as widely distributed as in years past.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.journalism.org/fact-sheet/newspapers/">Subscriptions have dropped</a> and many local papers have gone from daily to semi-daily to even weekly publications in response to lower advertising revenue and fewer subscribers.<br />
<br />
The digital era not only means that we can find news for free, but that digital subscriptions have been more common. To make matters even more fraught, we've seen a drop in newsroom employees, as publishers have had to lay off staff to keep from hemorrhaging money.<br />
<br />
But there was a time when not only were newsrooms and newspapers flourishing, but there were typically morning and evening editions of papers.<br />
<br />
Most major metropolitan areas had morning papers, evening papers, and even papers that ran both. It seems odd, but in the heyday of print, such operations meant something closer to a 24/7 news cycle.<br />
<br />
It was of course in this environment that Sherlock Holmes found himself using the advertising services of papers like the <i>Globe</i>, <i>Star</i>, <i>Pall Mall</i>, <i>St. James’s</i>, <i>Evening News</i>, <i>Standard</i>, <i>Echo</i>, and any others that came to Commissionaire Peterson's mind in "The Blue Carbuncle."<br />

We wonder how Holmes would have tracked down Henry Baker in modern era. Perhaps Wiggins' dog could have brought him by Baker Street Elementary...<br />

How Many States Were Mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes Stories?

This news is not going to make the Sherlockians of Maryland, Oregon or Massachusetts very happy, but your states never came to Sherlock Holmes’s notice.<br />
<br />
Not according to the Canon anyway, which has a plethora of allusions to the biggest state in the Lower 48 (California), the second biggest (Texas) and the next two in the list (New York and Florida), but glances at only one of the seven smallest states (Montana).<br />
<br />
Sounds a bit like electoral politics, actually.<br />
<br />
From <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> through to “The Three Garridebs,” chapter after chapter in the chronicles of Holmes’s adventures involve an American back-story — the Mormons travelling west and Jefferson Hope travelling back east, the Ku Klux Klan in “The Five Orange Pips” touching on many southern states, the police being consulted in New York and Cleveland, and of course Irene Adler having roots in New Jersey.<br />
<br />
Most readers will probably know why Kansas figures in “The Three Garridebs” (the fictional Alexander Hamilton Garrideb made his money there) but do you remember what North Carolina has to do with <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>? <b>*</b> (answer below)<br />
<br />
And so it goes on. Check off every mention of an American state as you come to it, and you’ll find a canonical reference (if not two or three) for exactly 25 of the 50 states (although only 48 states existed by the publication date of the last Sherlock Holmes story in 1927).<br />
<br />
Support from 25 of 50 states — that’s a tie in the United States Senate. You could break the tie by counting Washington, D.C., mentioned in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, but the District of Columbia isn’t represented by senators.<br />
<br />
It does get three electoral votes, though, and that’s the beginning of a striking calculation. The states (plus D.C.) that are mentioned in the Canon would give Sherlock Holmes, or some lucky candidate, a total of 373 electoral votes, a whopping majority of the 538 in the Electoral College. California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio — they add up fast.<br />
<br />
The biggest state that doesn’t get a canonical mention is Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, followed by Washington, Massachusetts and Indiana.<br />
<br />
The two states that are famous for an early primary (New Hampshire) and early caucuses (Iowa) also don’t put in an appearance. And apparently Sherlock Holmes never took an interest in his own private Idaho....<br />

The name William S. Baring-Gould is one of a hallowed few in the pantheon of Sherlockian scholars. He is one of the handful of chronologists who has attempted to put the stories in a particular order, using a number of research techniques.<br />
<br />
He also wrote the first unofficial "biography" of Sherlock Holmes with his <i>Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street: A Life of the World's First Consulting Detective</i>. And his name is synonymous with his magnum opus from 1967, <i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i>.<br />
<br />
The 2019 <i>Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual</i> looks at all of these things and more, making this legend come to life as a fully-formed and high achieving individual. Julie McKuras, Tim Johnson, Richard Sveum, and Gary Thaden joined forces to bring us this well-deserved biography of this hero of so many Sherlockians.<br />

At the annual dinner of the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a>, the organization's "Wiggins," Michael Whelan, turned over leadership to his replacement, Michael Kean, BSI ("General Charles Gordon").<br />
<br />
The last time leadership changed was when Tom Stix, Jr. left the post in 1997. He inherited the role from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/16/obituaries/dr-julian-wolff-85-led-a-club-for-fans-of-sherlock-holmes.html" target="_blank">Julian Wolff</a> in 1986, who had assumed command after the untimely death of Edgar W. Smith in 1960. Smith led the BSI beginning in <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1940-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1940</a>, after he convinced Christopher Morley to bring the group back after a three-year hiatus of its annual dinner.<br />
<br />
Having only six leaders in an 86-year period is remarkable for any organization. And with the elevation of Kean to the role of Wiggins, the BSI is in good hands, particularly with regard to its publishing activities. He is a retired publishing executive and has served the BSI Press for many years, now as Co-Publisher.<br />
<br />
Expect to hear more from the new Wiggins on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere this year. Meanwhile, we can hear from him at Baker Street Elementary...<br />
