As is our tradition this time of the year, we bring to you the Christmas classic that surrounds "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle."<br />
<br />
Typically we try to provide the freshest and most unique content here, but there are times when a grand tradition prevents us from keeping such a mandate - including our own self-imposed rule of trying to capture a relevant and original Canonical phrase for the title of each entry, never to be repeated. Just as the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "<a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204464404577112431986005786.html" target="_blank"><i>In Hoc Anno Domini</i></a>," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.<br />

In the case of this post (previously titled "The Second Morning After Christmas" [BLUE]) which has been used in <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2006</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2008/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2008</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2009/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2009</a> <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_25.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2010</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2011</a> and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html#.Ur0PksRDuSo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2012</a>, we find that we have a piece that continues to please, so we'll continue the tradition.<br />

Many Sherlockians have a Christmas tradition of reading “<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure_of_the_Blue_Carbuncle" target="_blank">The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle</a>.” While this story has been discussed to death, there is one
point that has always made me curious – the goose. For dinner, I mean, not its lack of a crop. How did
one prepare it at the time? What was served with it? How did they decorate the
table? How many courses were served? In other words, what was a Victorian
Christmas dinner like?<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
The best source for this information is <a href="http://mrs-hudson.com/Welcome.html" target="_blank">Mrs. Hudson</a> herself,
of course. So, to find out the preferences and culinary expertise of Mrs.
Hudson, I contacted my good friend Flora Spector, PhD, who specializes in all
things Mrs. Hudson. Flora is a lifetime Victoriana aficionado and OCD when it
comes to period correct reproduction sewing, consulting and making sample gowns
for the movies, and television. She is a member of the Baker Street Builders (the
only one to create Mrs. Hudson’s flat and live in it), a member of The Regency
Irregulars, The Stormy Petrels, The John H. Watson Society, Sherlock Holmes
Society of London, the scion originator and former Gasogene of the White Rose
Irregulars, and a member of many other Sherlockian groups she cannot remember.</div>

One of Flora’s specialties is hosting fantastic Sherlockian parties
serving authentic Victorian cuisine. At her parties, she acts as the
redoubtable Mrs. Hudson herself, even donning appropriate attire to serve Mr.
Holmes’ guests.</div>

I asked Flora (er…Mrs. Hudson) what she would serve to Mr.
Holmes and Dr. Watson for the greatest year of them all, 1895. <a href="http://www.annmargaretlewis.com/ref/holmes_menu.pdf" target="_blank">She wrote up a menu for me, complete with recipes</a><u> </u>(<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">receipts</i>
for those of us who speak British English). But how is all this fantastic fare
to be served? “Mrs. Hudson” agreed to sit down with me to answer my queries:</div>

<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><b>It’s 1895 and Mr.
Holmes had a terrific year this year with all his successful cases. How would
you help these gentlemen celebrate the holiday?</b></i></div>

Well dear, as Mr. Holmes has increased his rent to me, I
have made it my mission to prepare for him and the good doctor a proper
Christmas dinner (that is assuming they do not get called out on a case).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I always pick something up for him to give
the doctor, as Mr. Holmes forgets these things.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> 
</span>I also do the same for dear Mycroft Holmes. (Poor soul has no one to look after
him.)</div>

there’s a special way to decorate the table. What does that involve?</b></i></div>

Lordy!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Copious
amounts of work, plenty of starch and many hands to help lighten the
burden.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>First, we start with a silencer
cloth to be underneath a heavily starched Damask linen tablecloth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Plates and such are to be silent when
touching the table. This also protects the wood from the heat of some of the
dishes, as trivets do not always do enough.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>

<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><b>Victorians had a lot
of tableware, including several different types of glasses, silverware, and
what have you. Will you use all of that for Mr. Holmes’ Christmas dinner?</b></i></div>

Actually, yes. This is the ONE time of year I insist on
proper place settings. The birth of our Lord is too important a day not to
observe the niceties.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Besides, I have
Aunt Bertha’s Asparagus tongs to use and this is one of the few times it is

<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><b>How many courses are
part of your Christmas dinner, and how do you determine how many courses to
serve?</b></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">This year’s dinner is not being served as formal courses as
Mr. Holmes would <i>never</i> sit still long enough for that.  I plan on serving
from the sideboard, (the good doctor has assured me that he will clear it off
ahead of time) and in this way it will be almost a buffet so I can go enjoy my
own holiday meal with my cronies.  Generally there are a minimum of eight courses
in a formal dinner. For example, one might do the following:</span></div>

<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Main Course/beef or game</span></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Sides</span></li>

     palette in between</span></li>

celebrate a bit more quietly then the boys upstairs.</div>

you have to help you prepare and serve all this food?</b></i></div>

For the holiday I get as much done BEFORE the big day as
possible so I can allow my servants the day off.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Prior to Christmas day I have a maid of all
work, a part time cook (I make certain things myself you see) and the boots
boy.</div>

likes to eat, but Mr. Holmes is a bit of a twig who likes to starve himself. Do
you think he’ll eat this really elaborate meal you’ve prepared? </b></i></div>

No, I don’t expect he will eat terribly much. However, once
he and the doctor start talking, he tends to relax enough to enjoy the meal. He
does like it when I make a fuss over him.</div>

schedule is rather erratic, how do you manage to feed him at all (never mind
Christmas….).</b></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It is a challenge. I often make food that can be served at
room temperature or cold so it can keep until he is available.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I also always have tea cakes and such around
and pot of soup on the stove along with rolls, biscuits and other handy carry
food.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>With a properly stocked larder
there isn’t much you cannot make at a moment’s notice.</div>

The BBC have released the Christmas mini-episode that they were promising. Featuring all of the usual suspects, there is some doubt being cast as to whether Sherlock Holmes is really dead.<br />
<br />
Taking inspiration from some of Holmes's adventures upon his hiatus, as related to Watson in "The Adventure of the Empty House," it gives fans a welcome dose of Sherlock as they wait for the January 1 premiere of "The Empty Hearse" in the UK, with a promise to "be with you again very soon."<br />

Available as an app for iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry devices, as well as on the web, Flipboard is a tool that allows anyone to take the news and content they care about and curate it into their own magazines on any topic imaginable. In the way that Peter Blau has been collecting snippets to create the monthly <a href="http://redcircledc.org/index.php?id=39" target="_blank">Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press</a> and that Matt Laffey compiles the <a href="http://always1895.net/" target="_blank">Weekly Sherlock Holmes Link Compendium</a>, Flipboard allows us to create a well laid-out magazine of all of the places we hear of Sherlock - and they are numerous.<br />

<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25458009" target="_blank">The BBC are reporting</a> that the ceiling at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in London has collapsed on the audience below. There are currently said to be about 80 injuries, five of which are serious.</center>

The tragedy occurred at a sold-out performance of <a href="http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time-at-the-apollo-theatre" target="_blank"><i>The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time</i></a>, an Olivier Award-winning play that has been playing at the Apollo since March of this year and running in London since August 2012. The play is based on the novel <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1erz9H2" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time</a></i> by Mark Haddon, about a teenage boy with Asperger's syndrome who discovers a murdered dog.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Theatre" target="_blank">Apollo Theatre</a> is over 100 years old, having been built in 1901, and is a Grade II listed building in London's West End. It contains 775 seats on four levels, and the first play performed there was <i>The Belle of Bohemia </i>(no mention of Irene Adler). Over the years, it has been home to such productions as <i>Journey's End</i> starring Laurence Olivier, <i>Idiot's Delight</i> with Raymond Massey, Noel Coward's, <i>Private Lives</i>, <i>Treasure Hunt</i> directed by John Gielgud, David Storey's <i>Home</i> with Ralph Richardson, <i>Separate Tables</i> with John Mills and <i>Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell </i>starring Peter O'Toole. As we start to wind down the year and get ready for the holiday, I for one am looking forward to a week off and some time to catch up on some reading. I have this habit, which drives my wife crazy, of reading more than one book at a time. I do this partly because I always have one physical book and one digital and partly because there are just too many books to read and I'm like a kid in a candy store.<br />

Digitally I'm currently reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1597801607/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1597801607&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, which is a great collection of stories by some very well known authors like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, BSI ("The Devil's Foot"), and others. The premise of these stories being much more fantastical and well..."improbable."<br />
<br />
My physical pastiche is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1781165416/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1781165416&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>The Stuff of Nightmares</i></a> by James Lovegrove, which was published by Titan Books along with <i><b>The Will of the Dead</b></i>, which <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/12/sherlock-holmes-vs-iron-man.html" target="_blank">you can read my review here</a>.<br />
<br />
This summer my family and I stopped by this wonderful little used bookstore in Seattle and I bought<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0517203383/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0517203383&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, which was co-written by Adrian Conan Doyle, son of Sir Arthur, and mystery writer John Dickson Carr. I've heard mixed reviews but I'm interested to see how the Son of Doyle fills his father's shoes (although you have to wonder how much he actually wrote and how much Carr was the driving force).<br />
<br />
At that same used bookstore I picked up <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/051703817X/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=051703817X&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</i></a> by William S. Baring-Gould, BSI ("The <i>Gloria Scott</i>"). I've heard really good things about this one but haven't read it yet myself. While it's not a pastiche in the traditional sense, it's a biography of Sherlock Holmes written as if he were a real person, with details of his life and character extracted from the pages of his stories.<br />
<br />
That alone will more than keep me busy for the holiday week but I still have a stack of pastiches to read after these (I have another terrible habit of buying way more books than I can read). So to give you a peak at what I'll be reviewing next year here's what else is currently sitting unread on my bookshelf.<br />
<br />
As soon as I heard that it had been picked up to be made into a movie staring Ian McKellen as a past-his-prime Holmes, I managed to pick up a used but near perfect first edition of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400078229/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1400078229&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>A Slight Trick of the Mind</i></a> by Mitch Cullin.<br />
<br />
I had bought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316197017/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0316197017&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>The House of Silk</i></a> by Anthony Horowitz new before I moved back from London and still haven't cracked the cover. This being the most recent "blessed" works by the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd. and a best seller, I'm looking forward to reading it.<br />
<br />
Now that my kids know I'm reviewing Sherlock Holmes books they want me to review the young adult series, The Young Sherlock Holmes by Andrew Lane. My teenage daughter really enjoyed them so at some point I may start with the first book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AZ8A93A/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AZ8A93A&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20" target="_blank"><i>Death Cloud</i></a>.<br />

Remembering Sherlock Holmes Actor Peter O'Toole

Legendary stage and screen actor <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000564/" target="_blank">Peter O'Toole</a> has passed away at the age of 81. His family and publicist reported today that he died peacefully on December 14 at Wellington Hospital in London after a long illness.<br />
<br />
O'Toole's first major screen success was of course via <i>Lawrence of Arabia</i>, the 1962 David Lean masterpiece, in which he played T.E. Lawrence. Some of the other great films and roles for which he was known included <i>Man of La Mancha</i>, <i>The Lion in Winter</i>, <i>What's New Pussycat</i>, and <i>Goodbye, Mr. Chips</i>. Over the course of his career, he was nominated for eight Oscar awards, having finally received recognition from his peers with an honorary Oscar in 2003.<br />
<br />
Irish by birth, O'Toole was lauded by Michael Higgins, the president of Ireland today who said, "He had a deep interest in literature and a love of Shakespearean sonnets in particular." His love of literature might be what attracted him to the role of Sherlock Holmes in 1983.<br />

Over the course of four animated films, Peter O'Toole played a two-dimensional (<a href="http://betterholmesandgardens.blogspot.com/2011/09/sherlock-holmes-on-screen-sherlock.html" target="_blank">some might say a uni-dimensional</a>) Sherlock Holmes. The films were a valiant attempt at bringing all four of the longer stories to the screen and adapting them for children's viewing. They included Sherlock Holmes and: <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, <i>The Baskerville Curse</i>, and <i>The Valley of Fear</i>.<br />

If your appetite is more toward live-action films, then perhaps O'Toole's turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in <i><a href="http://amzn.to/18KtQLd" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fairy Tale: A True Story</a></i> is more for you. That was a dramatization of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottingley_Fairies" target="_blank">Cottingley Fairie</a>s photo sensation, which involved Doyle. Look for Harvey Keitel as Harry Houdini in the same film as well.<br />

<a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.com/e_times13-12.html"><b>The Sherlockian E-Times</b></a> (Vol.13 No.12 December 2013) from Carolyn and Joel Senter features an essay by Ron from Denver about what he learned from uber collector <a href="http://www.ash-nyc.com/JBS.htm" style="font-weight: bold;">John Bennett Shaw</a>, BSI ("The Hans Sloane of My Age") in regards to what it means to be a Sherlockian:<br />

"I was fortunate to meet and know John Bennett Shaw, who had the largest individual Sherlockian collection in the United States and was one of the kindest, most decent human beings I had the pleasure to know. In my too few visits by letter and in person, we discussed all things Sherlockian. The following points are concepts I took away from my conversations with John Bennett." </blockquote>
My favorite point from Ron's list is #1 "If you have one of a Sherlockian collectible, you gloat. If you have two, you share." I have the feeling that within Sherlockian culture we're about to experience a Shaw zeitgeist of sorts as younger Holmes fans who are just discovering the wide world of Sherlockian scholarship and Sherlockian history learn of the role Shaw played in the development and growth of U.S. scion societies. Edgar Smith may have been the chief organizer of early Sherlockian culture, using his General Motors management skills to lay the foundation for the modern BSI, but Shaw was the Johnny Appleseed of scion culture, playing St. Paul to Smith's St. Peter, marching out into the field and inspiring one local chapter after another via a 'big tent' approach where everyone and anyone interested in the Great Detective could/should get involved.<br />

Sherlockology - now that you're thoroughly familiar with the minds behind Sherlockology from their IHOSE appearance above - presents a remarkably in-depth and fascinating look at <a href="http://sherlockology.tumblr.com/post/69582674386/cost-of-221b" target="_blank">how much it might cost to be a resident of 221B</a> in the BBC <i>Sherlock</i>-verse via a set of intriguing and creative infographics. Everything from John and Sherlock's wardrobes to the more memorable contents of their flat are itemized and priced. Also discussed are costs associated with home insurance (clearly needed), based on some of the events of Seasons 1 and 2; eg. bullet holes in living room wall (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Game_(Sherlock)"><i>The Great Game</i></a>), broken windows (<i>ibid</i>.), etc. (Estimates based on <a href="http://www.confused.com/home-insurance">Confused.com</a> data). The Consulting Detective created a list entitled "<a href="http://the-consulting-detective.blogspot.com/2013/12/top-5-things-that-have-made.html" target="_blank">Top 5 Things that Have Made Sherlockians Happy</a>" featuring such items as Canonical Easter-eggs in the two Robert Downey, Jr. films (e.g., "Come at once if convenient...if inconvenient come all the same."), <a href="http://titanbooks.com/categories/fiction/all/?Brand=Sherlock%20Holmes">Titan Books</a> re-release of a myriad of classic pastiches, recent <a href="http://twitpic.com/br7u7t">Sherlock references</a> on <i>Doctor Who</i>, and more. Personally, none of these items would make my Top 5 - maybe a few would linger somewhere around the lower end of my top 30 - but this list is something that makes me happy as a Sherlockian because it stresses the interest the author Nick Cardillo has in the Canon, even if it's the Canon in the context of the Warner Bros. films, the 11th Doctor donning a deerstalker or BBC <i>Sherlock</i>. There's no denying that 2014, or at least the first quarter of 2014, will be awash (some might say drowned) in BBC's adaptation of the Master - but as long as the real and the true (and the forever sacred) inspiration (ie. the original 60 stories) for this or any Holmes adaptation remains relevant, his memory shall remain green and "these two survive." </div>

<a href="https://twitter.com/221blonde"><b>Sonia Fetherston</b></a> has alerted me to one of the most exciting bits of Sherlockian publishing news I've heard all year: Ms. Fetherston has just completed her draft of a biography on legendary Sherlockian Bliss Austin, BSI ("The Engineer's Thumb"): <i>Prince of the Realm: The Most Irregular James Bliss Austin</i> (2014) - "the book features new material, new interviews, newly revealed letters and other documents and photos" and is being published on the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale/allitems.html">BSI Biography Series</a> imprint (general editor <b>Les Klinger</b>). You may recall Fetherston from her 2012 BSJ Christmas Annual <a href="https://twitter.com/BakerStJournal/status/285754206994976769/photo/1"><i>Barrymore In Baker Street: "The Great Profile" Meets "The Great Detective," and They Both Get Their Names Up In Lights</i></a>, a terrific look at actor <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013597/">John Barrymore</a> who played the Great Detective in <a href="http://youtu.be/wLKeWcC1xyc"><i>Sherlock Holmes</i></a> (1922). Bliss Austin, an executive for US Steel, amassed one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints as well as collections of Sherlockiana at the time. Jon Lellenberg, BSI ("Rodger Prescott"), in his 1988 obituary of Austin, sums up rather succinctly the role Austin played in Sherlockian culture: "If the Baker Street Irregulars represent Sherlockiana's aristocracy, Bliss was a gracious and courtly Prince of the Realm. He exemplified for others what it meant to be an Irregular of the old school." Diamond's original 3 hour script versus the final, studio mandated 93 minute version:<br />

"Billy Wilder spent 7 years with his co-writer I. A. L. Diamond working on the script of <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i>. The finished film originally lasted over 3 hours, but the studios panicked over the failure of such long form films and demanded cuts. The film was hacked down to an acceptable 93 minutes. Diamond didn’t speak to Wilder for almost a year....The film was originally structured as a series of very specifically structured linked episodes, each with a particular title and theme. The opening sequence was to feature Watson’s grandson in London claiming his inherited dispatch box from Cox & Co. and there was also a flashback to Holmes’ Oxford days to explain his distrust of women....he episodic format made the pruning process relatively simple, so cut were the opening sequence, the Oxford flashback and two full episodes entitled 'The Dreadful Business of the Naked Honeymooners' at 15 minutes and “The Curious Case of the Upside Down Room' at 30 minutes. We can only hope that the full footage can one day be restored, although a full print is not currently thought to exist." </blockquote>
As long time readers will recall, the masochist in me enjoys reading about 'what could have been' when it comes to Wilder's <i>The Private Life</i> - contained in at least one commercial release of the film (the laserdisc release) is the audio for one or two of the cut scenes, along with stills from "The Upside Down Room".</div>

Taking this question a step further, we're asked to consider events in a recent episode of Elementary "Tremors" (2x10) wherein certain courses of action made by Elementary's Holmes leads semi-directly to a colleague getting shot:<br />

"I think it is brave of Elementary to take the examination of Holmes' methods a step further by examining the methods under the light of someone getting injured that is not the story-teller. We see a police force a little more intelligent than Lestrade and his peers, one that recognizes the need for restraint when you are hired as a consultant. It asks; Would Holmes methods work in a modern police age?" </blockquote>
Sherlockians have been debating questions related to Holmes' somewhat unorthodox techniques for decades. Is Holmes truly a special case, hence allowed to occasionally work above/beyond the law - or should he, regardless of the successes achieved, be chastised or censored after cases like BLUE or CHAS, the latter being perhaps the most extreme example of Holmes' above-the-law tendencies? </div>
