This time, we drink along to “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches,” a truly terrifying tale for all the characters involved, but especially tough for the women who reside in the building of the title. <br /> <br /> Lucky for us, dear reader, we have the inestimable Violet Hunter to lead us through the story, and to prove that smart women really are something to be reckoned with, even in Victorian times. In fact, in honor of Miss Hunter and how plucky she is, we will be raising a glass not only for the original rules of The Sherlock Holmes Drinking Game (which can be found here: <a href="http://www.examiner.com/sherlock-holmes-in-national/sherlck-holmes-fans-21-up-the-sherlock-holmes-drinking-game-has-arrived">The Sherlock Holmes Drinking Game</a>), but also every time Violet Hunter does something awesome.<br /> <br /> For the drink itself, I wanted to stir up something special, because it’s not everyday we meet a female character in the Canon who can hold her own like Violet Hunter can. And also, it needed to be coppered-colored (of course). Here’s what I’ve come up with:</div> <ul> <li>3 parts scotch whiskey</li> <li>1 part violet liqueur</li> </ul> <br /> Now, yes, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creme_de_violette">violet liqueur</a> can be hard to come by (although with the amount of flavored spirits nowadays, it shouldn’t give you too much trouble). If you are feeling slightly adventurous like our friend Miss Hunter, and you have access to actual real violets, I say try making your own! There are a lot of great tutorials out there for making flavored liqueurs, but my old stand-by is to put my ingredient (in this case, violets) in a jar with vodka and let it sit for a few weeks in the dark. Strain it and enjoy your very own, personally-made flavored liqueur!<br /> <br /> Now, on to the tale!<br /> <br /> <b>Number of Drinks Taken: 13</b><br /> <ol> <li>Take one drink for Violet entering 221B Baker Street.</li> <li>Take one drink for Holmes and Watson dashing off in a cab (this time a trap, going out to meet Miss Hunter).</li> <li>Take one drink for Holmes letting the villain go free (but not without tussling with the giant dog, first, of course).</li> <li>Take ten drinks for Violet Hunter being incredibly smart, willing and able throughout the entire piece, and also for Holmes to take notice of her abilities, which is really something. Remembering Peter Wood, BSI

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <h4 style="text-align: center;"> "from this wood the cycle must have emerged" [PRIO]</h4> Peter Harry Wood, BSI (“The Second Stain”) died in Vancouver on July 31, 2011 at the age of 80. He was born on the Isle of Man and immigrated to Canada in the 60’s where he was a secondary school teacher, working in both Saskatchewan and Alberta. He retired from teaching approximately 12 years ago and moved to the west coast of Canada, where he served as chairman of many committees in different fields, only stepping down in the last year.<br /> <br /> Mr. Wood’s many passions included vintage British cars and motorcycles, jazz and folk music, and writing fiction and science-fiction. He wrote many articles for various Sherlockian journals. His major opus, <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.ca/winged-wheel-Peter-Wood/dp/1896032273">The Winged Wheel<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></a></i></b>, is set on the Isle of Man and has Dr. Watson taking part in a motorcycle race.<br /> <br /> Mr. Wood was a Sherlockian since the age of 10 and was a founding member of The CPR Stockholders, the Edmonton Deerstalkers, and the <a href="http://www.acdfriends.org/">Friends of the ACD Collection</a>. He belonged to societies in Canada, the US, UK, and Australia, and was prominent in the Hounds of the Internet. In 1983 he was Toronto’s Master Bootmaker and was Priory Schoolmaster of <a href="http://thestormypetrels.com/">The Stormy Petrels of British Columbia</a>, guiding the group through a ten-year program of study of the entire Canon and two apocryphal tales. "Dark Rumours Gathered Round Him" [FINA]

But for many Sherlockians, there is a darker variation that they will not - or dare not - consider:<br /> <div> <br /></div> <div> <i>What if Moriarty was the victor at Reichenbach Falls? What if the Great Detective fell that fateful day and the Napoleon of Crime stood triumphant?</i></div> <div> <br /></div> <div> That is the premise behind <a href="http://www.imagecomics.com/">Image Comics'</a> new <b><a href="http://www.professorjamesmoriarty.com/">Moriarty</a> </b>series, written by Daniel Corey and drawn by Anthony Diecidue, and is now three issues into its inaugural arc, "The Dark Chamber". It is also, for Sherlockians, a great modern style "what if" take not on Holmes, but on his nemesis.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> We begin the story twenty years after Moriarty's triumph - he is living in relative seclusion, preferring to remain in the shadows. He is recruited by British intelligence on a unique mission - to locate the missing Mycroft Holmes....and if you think this is going to be another Holmesian pastiche, think again. Corey's writing provides a great mix of modern storytelling style with a working knowledge of the canon, creating a fully plausible "what if" scenario. (There is a scene of deduction in the first issue that not only connotes Moriarty's standing with Holmes, but is also one of the best written sequences I have read in awhile). There are some interesting twists and turns (without spoiling, there's a surprise cameo in # 2), and although the series takes a more science fiction-style turn, this is a pretty solidly written comic. For traditional Sherlockians, it may not have an easy appeal, but may be good for transitioning younger members into the canon.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> My only real objection is with Diecidue's art - perhaps it's a bias on my part, but it looks <i>too</i> modern. (Moriarty appears to have jumped out of modern production). It tends to have a slightly jarring effect - unlike Moffatt's Victorian-character-in-modern-times, a modern-take-on-Victorian-character, art wise, doesn't quite seem to fit. It is a slightly acquired taste, admittedly, but Diecidue does have a great ability to drive atmosphere forward in his art.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Writer Corey is no stranger to the canon - for more information, please listen<a href="http://comicrelated.com/news/12534/panel-discussions-10"> his podcast interview with my fellow Comic Related scribe Russell Burlingame.</a> With <b>Moriarty, </b>he uses the canon as a jumping-off point to tell a more modern story....and quite frankly, it's one of the better Holmes pastiches.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> The first three issues have been released, and can be found at your local comics store.</div> <div> <br /> <i>Editor's note: Gordon regularly covers the intersection of Sherlock Holmes and the entertainment industry. The scenes reported in the <i>Daily Mail</i> took place 70 feet up on the roof of the building being used as the hospital, when Sherlock fell (or was pushed?) off the roof to the street below. A high profile theft that is meant to be kept secret (and based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haydn%27s_head">actual historical events</a>). A collection of strange episodes that somehow reach an inevitable climax....Although much of this sounds sacrilegious to the canon...it's actually quite a humorous tale that juxtaposes canon (and canon-sounding) narration with "real" events that make this a pretty solid read.<br /> <br /> (Of course, let me be very clear - much of the humor is definitely adult-oriented, and the book contains much profanity and nudity. This may not be the best gift for those Sherlockians who are more sensitive or thin-skinned. But I happen to like adult-oriented humor, and even Perez himself admits that there is <a href="http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&old=1&id=10617">a specific 20th century influence on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Haydn's Head</span></a>).<br /> <br /> Perez's story - and his art - really drive home the Victorian period setting without seemingly forced, and his woodcut-style covers are extremely evocative. (Interior art is similar to Eddie Campbell's work on Alan Moore's <span style="font-weight: bold;">From Hell</span> graphic novel.) The narrative is relatively straightforward, and the book is a very simple read. Quite frankly, it's a pretty solid addition to any collection of Holmesian pastiche.<br /> <br /> However, the humor is not for everyone, but quite frankly, Perez's unique take on the Holmes/Watson dynamic is well worth checking out. For me, hearing of a pilot disappearing or not being available is like Holmes' fear of destroying documents about his cases: I enjoy viewing the details of what might have been - as well as what happened. <br /><br />For Sherlockians, a very important (and more recent) example is Stephen Moffatt's initial hour long pilot for the BBC series <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Season-Blu-ray-Benedict-Cumberbatch/dp/B004132I20?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Sherlock</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B004132I20" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" />. </b>Although the pilot was scrapped, despite British press to the contrary, having an initial "take" allowed the producers to create a more full-blooded version. Thankfully, the hour long pilot is a bonus feature on disc 2 of the DVD, and is well worth watching, especially knowing that there is going to be a <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/05_may/16/sherlock.shtml">second season</a>. <a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2532/4181746159_881cb2eab3_o.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="200" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2532/4181746159_881cb2eab3_o.jpg" style="float: left; height: 394px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 0px; width: 252px;" width="127" /></a><br /> Recasting Holmes in a more modern context might lead to mixed results - when done right (as in <a href="http://www.bakerstreetblog.com/2011/05/i-came-away-baffled-houn.html">Steven Moffatt & Mark Gatiss' BAFTA-winning series</a>), it has the same thrill and excitement as the Canon; but some efforts have led to mixed results (for example, some people dislike the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies from the 1940s, although I would argue that they do have a strong appeal)<br /> <br /> But one of the better modern "takes" on Holmes seems more like a pastiche, but 1998's <b><a href="http://www.chronologicalsnobbery.com/2008/01/zero-effect-tenth-anniversary-of-daryl.html"></a><a href="http://www.chronologicalsnobbery.com/2008/01/zero-effect-tenth-anniversary-of-daryl.html" target="_blank">Zero Effect</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=widgetsamazon-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=0780623223" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></b> is a great example of "recasting" Holmes and Watson in modern times....with "modern times" a synonym for "1990s Los Angeles & Portland".<br /> It would be easy to simply write this movie off as pastiche, with Bill Pullman's "Darryl Zero" and Ben Stiller's "Steve Arlo" as merely renamed versions of Holmes and Watson and the plot derived rather heavily from <a href="http://sherlockholmes.stanford.edu/readings1.html"><i>A Study in Scarlet</i></a>. But scratch the surface, and you will see that writer/director Jake Kasdan (in his first feature) has managed to channel Doyle's sense of atmosphere and drive into the movie, providing a great lost example of "translating" Holmes for the modern audience.<br /> <br /> First, there's the sense of atmosphere - Kasdan makes 1990s Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon come alive visually - there's very little of the cliche "hard boiled" atmosphere within Los Angeles (although some the dialogue may reflect later Holmes works), and Portland settings (some of which are rather unique) seem visually stunning. (A key sequence at a planetarium stands out as a great cinematic moment). Throughout the movie, Kasdan is able to channel Conan Doyle's ability to create atmosphere, as well as his narrative drive. (Granted, the movie has a relatively low-key tone, but it's the kind of movie that lingers in one's consciousness after viewing).<br /> <br /> Most importantly, however, Kasdan's script shares Conan Doyle's knack for characterization through dialogue. It's sharp, incisive, and almost seems plagiarized from Conan Doyle himself. The Internet Movie Database lists <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120906/quotes">a variety of quotes</a>: let me choose a few and let you judge for yourself: <br /> <i></i><br /> <blockquote> It's an uncompromising standard of his practice. He never meets any of his clients. He doesn't speak with them, or, for that matter, communicate in any direct fashion. That's his policy. But I am his sole representative and he is my only employer; and as such, I have full authorization to speak on his behalf on all his matters of business. I have with me a signed letter to that effect. He doesn't negotiate his fee. He works at a flat rate. Under some unusual circumstances, he'll work pro bono - never in between.</blockquote> <blockquote> Passion is the enemy of precision. Forget the misnomer 'crime of passion'. All crime is passionate. It's passion that moves the criminal to act, to disrupt the static inertia of morality. The client's passion for this dead woman had facilitated his downfall. And the blackmailer's passion will facilitate hers. When you live with no passion at all, other people's passion come into glaring relief.</blockquote> <i> </i><br /> <b>Zero Effect</b> is a movie that has great personal resonance for me - it was the last theatrical movie I saw before leaving Chicago for the first time, and was <a href="http://www.blogthispal.com/2006/02/franchise-that-shoulda-been.html">one of the first movies I blogged about</a>. Youthful enthusiasm notwithstanding, it's a film I try to see at least once a year - it not only contains some great nods towards the canon, but also contains some much deeper - and more profound - emotional truths.<br /> <br /> This is a film that is well worth seeking out, and can be enjoyed by Sherlockians and non-Sherlockians alike.
