We've added to it since, but one sport did not enter that discussion: cricket.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Since cricket barely warranted a mention in the Canon, you might think such an oversight is understandable. The reality is we've created many more bricks with little straw on other related topics (golf, for example).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">There are two explicit instances of cricket being mentioned, and one tangential one. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">1) Do you remember who was "<b><i>a fine scholar and athlete; plays in the Rugby team and the cricket team for the college</i></b>" and in which story this occurred? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">2) And in which story do we learn of "<b><i>a blue cricket-cap, with a white chevron on the peak</i></b>," and whose was it? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And now an oblique reference — one that doesn't name the sport itself, but rather equipment used in playing cricket.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">3) In one story, we hear of Watson admitting "<b><i>it seemed rather a piquant thing to us to chevy him about the playground and hit him over the shins with a wicket.</i></b>" Who was the victim? Which story?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For some reason or another, we always imagined Watson and Watson alone whacking the poor child with a cricket bat; but read that again — he says "wicket." This takes things to another level. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In cricket, a wicket is a set of three stumps (vertical sticks) and two bails (smaller sticks placed atop the stumps). So it's essentially five sticks: two small and three large. Are we to believe that Watson grouped all of these (or at least the three stumps) in his hands and hit his victim with them?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">More likely, there were three assailants, each with his own stump, surrounding and attacking the poor boy in question. Sherlock Holmes himself had a strong sense of right and wrong.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in many cases, that meant allowing a perpetrator to go free after solving the case. Was this code of honor meant to speak to the potential character of such individuals in the future, in order to allow them to change their ways? Or perhaps he thought their deeds were justifiable?  </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Blue Carbuncle," he flings the door open and allows James Ryder to escape, with a tinge of empathy:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"I suppose that I am commuting a felony, but it is just possible that I am saving a soul. This fellow will not go wrong again; he is too terribly frightened. Send him to jail now, and you make him a jail-bird for life."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But that term commuting a felony, was the preogative of the crown. In "The Mazarin Stone," he said he'd "compound a felony." And in "The Priory School," he said the Duke of Holdernesse "condoned a felony."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The proper term was "misprision of felony," or failing to report knowledge of a felony to the appropriate authorities. Watson first meet, thanks to the introduction via Stamford, they seem an odd pair — like two circles of a Venn diagram that just barely overlap. And yet this combination is exactly what was necessary to bring the many adventures of Sherlock Holmes to the world. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Had they been more alike, we wouldn't have experienced the wonder and awe with which Watson treated some of their interactions. Nor would we have instances of Holmes's ultimate disappointment when he sent Watson in his place during certain cases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For instance, in "<b>The Solitary Cyclist</b>," Watson returns from his observation of the cyclist, which was done at a considerable distance:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Mr. Sherlock Holmes listened with attention to the long report which I was able to present to him that evening, but it did not elicit that word of curt praise which I had hoped for and should have valued. On the contrary, his austere face was even more severe than usual as he commented upon the things that I had done and the things that I had not.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Your hiding-place, my dear Watson, was very faulty... As it is you were some hundreds of yards away, and can tell me even less than Miss Smith... You really have done remarkably badly.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“What should I have done?” I cried, with some heat.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Gone to the nearest public-house. That is the centre of country gossip. They would have told you every name, from the master to the scullery-maid...Well, well, my dear sir, don’t look so depressed. But we can't say Holmes wasn't prepared; he did so knowing that Watson didn't have the power of observation as him.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">He managed to outdo Watson on Watson's description of Josiah Amberley:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Left shoe wrinkled, right one smooth.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I did not observe that.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“No, you wouldn’t. I spotted his artificial limb. But proceed.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Watson was already disturbed at this kind of set-up in <b><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></b>. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 170?
