In this episode, we sit down for a chat with Mike Berdan, BSI to discuss his article "The Adventure of the Dead Detective" in the Spring 2007 Baker Street Journal. Mike tells us about:
  • How he came to be interested in Holmes
  • His origins with Sherlock Holmes societies
  • Some of his previous 12 published articles in the Journal
  • The life of a freelance writer
  • His inspiration behind the current article
  • Response to Mike's thesis in his article
  • Advice for aspiring Sherlockian scholars looking to be published
  • A surprising revelation
It's worth noting that this episode was actually our first recording session; the audio, while not ideal, is leveled better than the previous interview. We hope that you'll be able to listen to it without any difficulty.

Another interesting and enjoyable podcast.

As someone just getting into Sherlock Holmes, I was interested in Mike's comment where he said it took him 10-years to get "club-able." How exactly does one get into a scion (what does that stand for?) Also, what goes on at these meetings? Mike said he did presentations. Is your podcast the sort of thing that would go on at these gatherings?

Keep up the great work!! I look forward to episode #4.

Daryn,

Thank you for that very informative comment. As Burt and I are dyed-in-the-wool Sherlockians, sometimes we forget that there are others who are just beginning to enjoy the Game. I think an episode of the fundamentals is probably worth exploring, and soon.

We'd like to make sure - even though this is a niche podcast - that we are producing episodes that appeal to every level of Sherlockian, from the novice to the life-long follower. We'll take your words to heart and come up with a great show about starting out.

Well, I really enjoy your podcasts it is so interesting even if I understand only the half of what you are talking about, this really gets hard for me. English is not my first language and when I first read Sherlock in English I would not understand a word. I lately re-discovered the Granada TV series with Jeremy Brett as Holmes and started to view them in the English original version. That helped quite a lot and after having my Sherlock Holmes book the complete short stories for over twenty years I could finely read it. So to understand completely about what you where talking it will take me some more time. But then, I hope I will be able to write something more helpful to you.
But until than good luck and keep on going.

Your podcasts are quite enjoyable and informative. I have only one request: would you please set up your links to open in new windows? I made the mistake of attempting to cruise the links associated with your 2nd podcast while listening to it online and that threw me out of the podcast and I had to start over. Thanks!

Mary,

I'm glad you're finding the show to your liking. As far as clicking on links and having them open in a new window, this is something that you control.

Simply right-click (with your mouse) the link and select "Open in a new window" or "Open in a new tab." Then you can keep listening while the links open separately.

I hope this helps.
