In college, when someone displayed this kind of ridiculousness, we'd mockingly fire up everyone's favorite game show, "Masters of the Obvious," and introduce them to the crowd.</div><div><br /></div><div>In recent years, Captain Obvious has become a part of our collective consciousness, in his role as mascot for Hotels.com. Attired in a fake naval-military outfit, he points out the commonsensical things associated with using their service.</div><div><br /></div><div>In "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," Sherlock Holmes warns Watson: "There is nothing more deception than an obvious fact."</div><div><br /></div><div>But does this fly in the face of Holmes's stating the so-called 'obvious' in other circumstances? For example, in "<b>The Red-Headed League</b>," Sherlock Holmes draws up these conclusions after looking at Jabez Wilson:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some time done manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a considerable amount of writing lately, I can deduce nothing else.” <br /></div></blockquote></div><div>Manual labor would seem obvious at first glance; but we need to look beyond the obvious, as Holmes counsels. Was it that Wilson's enlarged hand had other causes: an injury, or perhaps a birth defect?</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Another example comes from "<b>The Blue Carbuncle</b>," when Holmes was examining Henry Baker's hat:</div><div><div>“That the man was highly intellectual is of course obvious upon the face of it...it is a question of cubic capacity.”</div></div><div><br /></div><div>The size of the cranium and intelligence are very weakly associated, if at all. It would be obvious to assume Mr. Baker was intelligent, but should we trust that? What about a potential birth or growth defect that may have afflicted Henry Baker? </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>And when John Hector McFarlane made his dramatic entrance to 221B Baker Street in "<b>The Norwood Builder</b>," Holmes observed:</div><div><blockquote><div>“...beyond the obvious facts that you are a bachelor, a solicitor, a Freemason, and an asthmatic, I know nothing whatever about you.”</div></blockquote></div><div>Very similar to the situation above in "The Red-Headed League," don't you think? And yet, we can find a fault in Holmes's very first observation. Disheveled clothing may <i>obviously</i> point to bachelorhood, but Holmes tells us not to trust the obvious. Mr. McFarlane had just come from an overnight at Anerley Arms (not at home) and rushed to Baker Street, which could have happened whether he was married or single.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So, should we trust the obvious in the Canon? Clearly not when Holmes is explaining himself. </p><p><strong><i>A Three-Pipe Christmas</i></strong> begins with "<a href="https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/32/the-adventures-of-sherlock-holmes/351/adventure-7-the-adventure-of-the-blue-carbuncle/">The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle</a>", which leads into a trilogy of essays that provide Sherlockian insights into the context of the story. Julie McKuras, BSI ("The Duchess of Devonshire") in her essay "The Season of Forgiveness" and Monica M. Schmidt, BSI ("Julia Stoner") in her "A Most Difficult Time of the Year" highlight how the story reflects much of the joy <i>and </i>the melancholy of the holiday. As a first-time reader of this particular pastiche, I found it quite enjoyable for its sly sense of humor as well as its prose styling. (Or as one commenter states, the story's tone is "more Lewis Carroll than Conan Doyle," and that is to its credit). With its focus on book collecting and literature, "The Unique Hamlet" has more than earned its reputation as a high-end pastiche.</p><p>The essays that follow provide insight into the history of "The Unique Hamlet" describe its importance in written Sherlockian pastiche. The late Susan Rice, BSI ("Beeswing") describes it in her essay as the "gold standard" in its balance of humor and style. Dan Andricaco (who edited <b><i>The Three Pipe Christmas</i></b>) also discusses how Vincent Starrett deftly balances pastiche, parody, and satire in writing "The Unique Hamlet." Although Solar Pons is inspired by Sherlock Holmes (and "The Unique Dickenseians" lifts some tone and spirit from "The Unique Hamlet), calling Pons a pastiche of Holmes would not be entirely accurate. As the Pons-oriented essays by David Marcum PSI, Bob Byrne PSI, Roger Johnson, BSI ("Shinwell Johnson"), and Derrick Belanger, PSI attest, Sherlockians may find much to enjoy about exploring the Holmes-inspired yet modern-spirit tales of Solar Pons. </p><p>With its illustrations by Karen Gosselin providing a <i>Strand Magazine</i>-like feel, <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/3qxtruS" target="_blank">The Three Pipe Christmas</a></i></b> serves both as an excellent introduction to Sherlockian thought as well as the ideal gift for a long-term student of the canon. He lamented that the great unobservant public "could hardly tell a weaver by his tooth," indicating that he of course could. In "The Stockbroker's Clerk," he observed the tooth stuffed badly with gold in both of the Pinner "brothers" that gave away the ruse.</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes was careful about dental hygiene: as he and Watson prepared for an overnight visit at Stoke Moran in "The Speckled Band," he suggested Watson bring his revolver. "That and a tooth-brush are, I think, all that we need."</div><div><br /></div><div>And of course, he must have visited a dentist after his altercation with Matthews, "who knocked out my left canine in the waiting-room at Charing Cross." That would have been some years before Holmes's 1891 confrontation with Professor Moriarty, as the reference was in Holmes's index in "The Empty House," after his return to London.</div><div><br /></div><div>The visit to the dentist that Matthews caused likely resulted in the dentist taking an impression of Holmes's mouth in order to reset the tooth or replace it with an apparatus. While Holmes was in the chair, he must have remarked on the quickness of the setting of the preparation and immediately determined that he could apply it to his own work.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>Recall in <i>The Sign of Four</i> (dated by chronologists as taking place in 1888), he demonstrated his familiarity with casts of footprints:</div><blockquote><div>"Here is my monograph upon the tracing of footsteps, with some remarks upon the uses of plaster of Paris as a preserver of impresses."</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>It's quite likely that Holmes got the dentist's formulation and adapted it for his own purposes. However, there's no indication that Holmes considered teeth as unique as footprints or fingerprints in his practice though.
