Of course, Horace Harker was a reporter for the Central Press Syndicate in "The Six Napoleons," but in our case we're acting in his stead to share some of the most significant news to our own syndicate. We share a special announcement about a future feature of the program which we'll call "The Central Press Syndicate." But in the meantime, we have much to share...<br />

We pick up with a clarification on Lenore Glen Offord ("The Old Russian Woman") and tell you all about the 2011 <i>Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual</i>, in which readers will be able to discover the many aspects of this intelligent and well-published writer. We also question what Investitures looked like under Edgar Smith's and Julian Wolff's time - particularly the presentation of the shilling as a medal. There's an opportunity for your feedback.<br />

Speaking of feedback, we're happy to share a good deal of listener mail and commentary from Episode 54. Thank you for all of your input and intelligent observations. On the news front, we have items from the next season of "Sherlock" from BBC One, and news from Steven Moffat that there's a clue that everyone missed with regard to Sherlock Holmes's death. And the announcement of the next installation of the absolutely phenomenal set of events called <i><b>From Gillette to Brett</b></i> that look at Sherlock Holmes of the screen. Also events-wise, while we missed the Sherlock Holmes Through Time and Place conference in Minnesota, we'll be featuring a report from the <b><a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23SHMN13&src=typd" target="_blank">#SHMN13</a></b> goings on.<br />

For topics more controversial, we have the latest goings-on around the so-called "Free Sherlock" lawsuit between Leslie Klinger and the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd., which indicate that a summary judgment is being requested, with the decision due in the coming weeks. And the mid-year letter from the Baker Street Irregulars' Wiggins, Michael Whelan contains a reprint of "The World of Sherlockians" that was shared on the BSJ website<br />

Finally, we concluded with a reading of the Editor's Gas-Lamp on the importance sparking plugs, this time choosing September 1982 (Vol. 32, No. 3). In it, you'll find the definitive and seminal phrase as to what it takes to establish a Sherlockian society.<br />

This morning we were treated to the news that the major villain in the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> Season 3 has been announced.  It is none other than a modern-day manifestation of Charles Augustus Milverton: Charles Augustus <b><i>Magnussen</i></b>.<br />

The announcement was made by producer <b><a href="https://twitter.com/suevertue/status/361828359799468032" target="_blank">Sue Vertue via her Twitter account</a></b> and the news immediately spread across the web. The villain will be played by Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen, who may be known to a wider audience from his role in <b><i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586565/" target="_blank">The Killing</a></i></b>.<br />

Of course, our readers know Charles Augustus Milverton from the eponymous adventure in the collection of stories <i><a href="http://ignisart.com/camdenhouse/canon/chas.htm" target="_blank">The Return of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>. You can <b><a href="http://dickens.stanford.edu/sherlockholmes/2007/250_issue6/2007_issue6.pdf" target="_blank">read the original story, in its original layout</a></b> courtesy of the Stanford University "<b><a href="http://dickens.stanford.edu/sherlockholmes/index.html" target="_blank">Discovering Sherlock Holmes</a></b>" initiative from 2007. Milverton was known to Holmes as "The worst man in London," described as follows:<br />

"He is the king of all the blackmailers. Heaven help the man, and still more the woman, whose secret and reputation come into the power of Milverton. With a smiling face and a heart of marble he will squeeze and squeeze until he has drained them dry. The fellow is a genius in his way, and would have made his mark in some more savoury trade. His method is as follows: He allows it to be known that he is prepared to pay very high sums for letters which compromise people of wealth or position. He receives these wares not only from treacherous valets or maids, but frequently from genteel ruffians who have gained the confidence and affection of trusting women. He deals with no niggard hand. I happen to know that he paid seven hundred pounds to a footman for a note two lines in length, and that the ruin of a noble family was the result. Everything which is in the market goes to Milverton, and there are hundreds in this great city who turn white at his name. He will hold a card back for years in order to play it at the moment when the stake is best worth winning. Sounds like a perfect recipe for a villain in the Cumberbatch / Freeman lineup. As a reminder, the titles for the three episodes of Season 3 include:<br />

If we recall that in the original CHAS that Holmes, disguised as Escott, "a plumber with a rising business," got himself engaged to Milverton's housemaid, the title "His Last Vow" seems to take shape. And when we recall that the hints that Mssrs. Gatiss and Moffat gave fans some time ago were "Wedding. Rat. Bow," one could infer that wedding could feasibly mean the engagement (although a Mrs. Watson could figure into things) or that rat refers to Milverton ("Milverton had glided as quick as a rat to the side of the room." [CHAS]).<br />

At any rate, we're delighted to see an actor who looks the part of Milverton, just as Robert Hardy did in Granada's <i>The Master Blackmailer</i>. And Hardy was superb in his unabridged readings of a number of the original stories - including "Charles Augustus Milverton," in which we think his performance was even better than in the Jeremy Brett Granada outing. With BBC's <b>Sherlock</b> and CBS' <b>Elementary</b>, the idea of contemporary stories and modern reinventions of the Great Detective does not seem as radical as one  might perceive. However, a recent comic series by New Paradigm Studios (<a href="http://www.blogger.com/"><span id="goog_1326941042"></span>whose Kickstarter campaign was featured on this site<span id="goog_1326941043"></span></a>, and which has been the subject of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/08/episode-44-watson-and-holmes.html" target="_blank">an episode of <b>I Hear of Sherlock</b></a>) reveals an  extremely similar - yet similarly radical - recasting of Holmes and Watson in contemporary times.<br />
<br />
<b>Watson and Holmes</b> is a series written by Karl Bollers, and drawn by Rick Leonardi, that recasts the duo's adventures in contemporary New York. However, there is a slight racial switch, as the series takes place specifically in Harlem: John Watson is a medical intern, and  Sherlock Holmes is a private investigator.  Although it may lack the canon-influenced snap of the BBC series - or even the more procedural aspects of CBS's efforts - <b>Watson and Holmes</b>sparkles with a straightforward narrative drive, having a kind of propulsiveness that characterized the best of Conan Doyle's work. There are slight nods and variations to the canon, but Bollers' writing captures the spirit (if not the letter) of canon.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a>Leonardi's artwork on <b>Watson and Holmes</b> is also exemplary - there is a great noir feel to the art, and he is able to capture physical action well. Characters have a definite look and tone to them, and his take on both Watson and Holmes gives both men a strong presence. Storytelling throughout is well paced, resulting in a desire for more stories and tales by the end of the fourth issue.<br />

The first issues of <b>Watson and Holmes</b> are available online via <a href="http://www.comixology.com/">Comixology</a> and <a href="http://www.comixpress.com/">Comixpress</a>, as well as through better comics shops. Although a trade paperback collection is likely, <b>Watson and Holmes</b> is also enjoyed in single issue portions and worth any Sherlockian's time. With plenty of nods and Easter eggs for Sherlockians, this is one series worth seeking out.<br />
