Last night marked the U.S. premiere of "Sherlock" on PBS's Masterpiece MYSTERY! and it was marked by a first for the Sherlockian community: a live Twitter chat during which online followers would watch and participate in commentary about the show.<br />
<br />
We were honored to have been <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/sherlock/twitter.html"><b>asked by PBS to act as one of the hosts</b></a> for the evening. We used our Twitter handle <a href="http://twitter.com/bakerstreetblog"><b>@BakerStreetBlog</b></a> [Editor's note: now <a href="http://twitter.com/ihearofsherlock" target="_blank">@IHearofSherlock</a>] and employed the #sherlock_pbs "hashtag" so that people who are not following certain Twitter accounts have a single phrase to follow. This allows for a broader distribution of the conversation.<br />
<br />
Other hosts for the evening included PBS's staff as <a href="http://twitter.com/masterpiecepbs">@masterpiecepbs</a> and Andrew Giulli as <a href="http://twitter.com/strandmag">@strandmag</a>, and we addressed questions, made observations, and kept the pace going for everyone involved.<br />

In addition to the quotes and other obvious tie-ins ("A Study in Pink" vs. <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>), there were other elements that we thought were particularly clever and spot on for a 21st century Sherlock Holmes:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The use of texting as a modern proxy for Holmes's proclivity for telegrams ("he has never been known to write when a telegram would serve" [DEVI]).</li>
<li>Using Watson's phone rather than his pocket watch to deduce things about his life.</li>
<li>The way Holmes's thought process was superscripted on the screen as he made his quick observations. It gave the audience as sense as to what the observations were, which made the later explanations more context.</li>
<li>The relationship between Holmes and Watson begins to blossom - from standoffish at first, to more friend-like toward the end of the episode.</li>
<li>Mycroft's appearance and position within the government (although this Mycroft has lost a significant bit of weight - which the character references in the episode).</li>
</ul>

The evening was a fast-paced one (and we were glad that we were able to screen the episode prior to the airdate, in order to prepare for the session). At this point, we're not sure if we'll be repeating this on October 31, but stay tuned. If you're tuning in to the new series <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Season-One-Benedict-Cumberbatch/dp/B004132HZS?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank"><b><i>Sherlock</i></b></a> on PBS, you'll note the exterior shot that represents one of the most famous addresses in literature. It looks familiar, but it wasn't shot on Baker Street. More on the actual location in a moment.<br />

As we all know, Baker Street of today doesn't look quite as cozy as the television version. Officially, Upper Baker Street didn't exist in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's time, and the original location of 221B has been debated for decades in a number of Sherlockian publications, including <b><i><a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/">The Baker Street Journal</a></i></b>. Tourists, residents and Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts alike have strolled up and down that famous Westminster thoroughfare in search of the residence of the famous consulting detective.<br />
<br />
The character of Sherlock Holmes was such a part of the public consciousness that even in Conan Doyle's time, correspondence would be addressed to 221B Baker Street. When the Abbey National Building company was housed in a section of the street that included 221, they employed a secretary that did nothing but answer the hundreds of letters that arrived there annually. They've since vacated the building, leaving the <b><a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.co.uk/">Sherlock Holmes Museum</a></b> (officially at 239 Baker Street) to claim the letters addressed to 221B.<br />

So, back to our new location. The producers of "Sherlock" selected 187 North Gower Street, London NW1 as the official home to our 21st century Holmes. North Gower Street is actually an ideal location for our hero. It's not far from Euston Station (which saw some activity in <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Study-Scarlet-Sherlock-Holmes-Mystery/dp/1450596185?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">A Study in Scarlet</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=1450596185" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i></b>, the story on which the first episode, "A Study in Pink," is based). This is a fairly academic area of the City - you'll find the British Library and British Museum not terribly far away, and University College London is directly there as well. This area also includes Montague Street, which is where Sherlock Holmes first settled when he came to London (mentioned in "The Musgrave Ritual").<br />

You may note the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_blue_plaques">blue plaque</a> on 183 Gower Street in the photo above. It's actually a plaque dedicated to the memory of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Mazzini">Giuseppe Mazzini</a>, the Italian philosopher, politician and patriot who spent a few years in London in the 1850s. While there's no direct connection between him and the Sherlock Holmes Canon, there are a number of Italian references in the stories, including "The Six Napoleons" and "The Red Circle," primarily. On October 24, <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/sherlock/"><b>MASTERPIECE Mystery</b></a>! on PBS will debut the first of three episodes of Sherlock for the U.S. audience. Christopher Morley once said that the Sherlock Holmes stories were a textbook of friendship. We've heard this platitude before, but what does it mean? How did the relationship between Holmes and Watson manifest itself in the Canon and how does that impact us as Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts today, in the digital age?<br />

We discuss the elements of Holmes and Watson and how they were influenced most notably by the personality of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; the difficulty in portraying the depth of the characters and their relationship on stage and screen; and how Sherlockians make each other's acquaintance.<br />

We seem to be getting inspiration from all places these days. In this case, it was Barbara Roden, BSI ("Beryl Stapleton") who posted a video on Facebook that caught our attention.<br />

Following last week's news that <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/09/one-of-queerest-men-gree_27.html#.Vq2mu_krLb0" rel="nofollow">Stephen Fry would play Mycroft Holmes</a>, it seems that we now have the results of the long-awaited casting of Professor Moriarty. Those of you familiar with the award-winning television drama <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mad-Men-Season-Jon-Hamm/dp/B000YABIQ6?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b><i>Mad Men</i></b></a> may recognize the name Jared Harris. He plays Lane Pryce, the finance chief at the advertising agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, set in 1960s New York.<br />
<br />
But it is 1890s London that will see him next as he becomes the Napoleon of Crime, Professor James Moriarty - forever known as the archenemy of Sherlock Holmes. This is difficult role to fill, as it's one of the most iconic in the Canon, yet one that's given precious little description, other than what Holmes conveys to us mostly in "The Final Problem":<br />

"He is extremely tall and thin, his forehead domes out in a white curve, and his two eyes are deeply sunken in his head. He is clean-shaven, pale, and ascetic-looking, retaining something of the professor in his features. His shoulders are rounded from much study, and his face protrudes forward, and is for ever slowly oscillating from side to side in a curiously reptilian fashion. He peered at me with great curiosity in his puckered eyes."</blockquote>

Back to Jared Harris: his acting skills have been recognized recently, as he has received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his outstanding performances, both in <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Case-Benjamin-Button-Single-Disc/dp/B001U0HBPG?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B001U0HBPG" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></b> and Mad Men. Not only that, but he actually has some interesting Sherlockian connections that we'd be remiss if we omitted them:<br />

The other point is that he was married to Emilia Fox, who is the daughter of actor Edward Fox. Based on his pedigree, his previous performances and his look - with a little makeup and wardrobe, it's possible Harris will look very similar to Paget's original interpretation of the professor - we think this may be an excellent casting choice.
