...which is why I find it delightful that Peterson of Dublin has a Sherlock Holmes series of pipes.<br />
<br />
I do not smoke a pipe, but I think that these pipes are simply lovely. I wouldn't mind having one or more of these on a rack on my Sherlock Holmes shelf. Peterson has been hand-crafting high-end pipes since 1865. The company motto is “The Thinking Man Smokes A Peterson Pipe”, so it makes some sense that they would create an entire series in honor of one of the greatest thinking men in literature. <br />

First issued in 1987, the pipes are available in smooth briar, ebony, rustic, and some sandblast finish. All have extra large bowls, with sterling silver bands and a fishtail mouthpiece. The initial issue was in the form of a seven day set, and included a specially crafted wooden rack for the complete set.<br />

In doing so, she gives the reader concrete examples of how to approach the fabled scientific method, along with the psychology behind the process.</div>

My allotted time of seventy-five minutes flew by so fast that I actually skipped over a few of the paragraphs of my talk. Afterwards, one of the attendees told me that it was the best and most interesting talk he had heard so far at this meeting. Considering that some of the talks included “Has the Onion Outlived its Usefulness?"; “Spiritual Exercise Light"; and “Friendly Delicate Bridge"  I am not sure if this was a compliment or an insult. Another one said that when a room full of Mensa Member all clap, that is a great accomplishment. I was pleased." The artistry of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Brett" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="Jeremy Brett"><span style="font-weight: 700;">Jeremy Brett</span></a> has much to do with this, but honours must surely be shared with some inspired screenplays and production values. Together they created what are at times masterpieces. As Holmes observes in the Epilogue to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Valley_of_Fear" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="VALL"><span style="font-weight: 700;"><em style="font-weight: 400;">Valley of Fear</em></span></a>: ‘<span style="font-weight: 700;">You can tell an old master by the sweep of his brush.</span>’ The closer you look at this series the more authentic and well-executed it appears. Mr Boström’s opus, though currently only available in Swedish, is already causing quite a stir in the Sherlockian world. Like Mr Andriacco, I was fortunate enough to have received an inscribed copy of what is one of the finest looking Sherlockian books published in the last few years - and going by just the end notes and bibliography (which are mostly in English), it’s overwhelmingly clear that the book I’m holding is a meticulously researched scholarly love letter to ACD and his most famous creation. Boström answers questions on how he first discovered ACD and Holmes, how he came to write <em><span style="font-style: normal; font-weight: 700;">Från Holmes till Sherlock</span></em>, what his research practices are, if/when we can expect an English translation and the level of popularity of Sherlock Holmes in the Scandinavian countries. A fascinating interview which will leave Sherlockians wanting more: “In my book I present some previously unknown facts regarding the years when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was alive, but in the later half of the book there are big chunks of unknown facts."</div>

<span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; outline: 0px;">The <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/07/company-resi_4.html" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="Baker Street Blog on Klinger v ACD Estate">Baker Street Blog</a></span> posted a lengthy and thought provoking piece by contributor <span style="font-weight: 700;">James O’Leary</span> that deals with various aspects of the ongoing Klinger vs. ACD Estate case. Making sure we’re all on the same page, Mr O’Leary begins by explaining what’s at stake with an extensive quote from the <a href="http://free-sherlock.com/" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="Free Sherlock!"><span style="font-weight: 700;">Free Sherlock</span></a> (ie. Team Klinger) site: “Klinger seeks to have the Court determine that the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson are no longer protected by federal copyright laws and that writers, filmmakers, and others are free to create new stories about Holmes, Watson, and others of their circle without paying license fees to the current owners of the remaining copyrights." Almost every Sherlockian I’ve spoken to about this case has at least a moderately strong opinion regarding what the outcome should be (though most are pro-Klinger), but there is apparently a segment of pro-Klinger stalwarts whom “have taken the Free Sherlock movement to heart. They have “taken up arms”, spiritually if not financially, with Klinger and see the seal of the <a href="http://www.conandoyleestate.co.uk/" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="ACD Estate">Conan Doyle Estate Ltd</a>. as something undesirable" - in short, they have called for a boycott of Sherlockian ‘products’ that feature the Estate seal. When asked about this boycott, Klinger responded “While I appreciate the sentiment,<span style="font-weight: 700;"> I don’t think that a boycott is fair</span>. Many licensees have been pressured into obtaining licenses, and not everyone has the freedom (that is, the time or the money) to stand up to the Estate’s bullying and threats of blocking sales. I do have a problem with flaunting “authorized” status, as in the case of <em>The House of Silk</em>" (cf. <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/books-and-media/the-house-of-silk-by-anthony-horowitz/article4248100/" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="Review of House of Silk">Klinger’s review in <em>The Globe and Mail</em> of <em>House of Silk</em></a> and argument against ‘flaunting’ <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/books-and-media/the-house-of-silk-by-anthony-horowitz/article4248100/" style="color: black; outline: 0px;" target="_blank" title="Klinger review of House of Silk">here</a>).
