"a trifle beyond me" [GREE]

We hope you've had a chance to hear our 11 year-long show, in which we interview notable Sherlockians who are doing their part to keep the memory of Sherlock Holmes green. The program I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere has evolved over the years, but we're on a steady cadence of long-form interviews on the 15th and 30th of every month.

But over on Trifles, we're doing something different: every week we take about 15 minutes to talk about one or two issues that we've noticed within the Sherlock Holmes stories. It's an approach that we hope brings more people into our fold who are new to Sherlock Holmes and are fascinated with the details within the story, or who may have some questions about what they read.

And now, on with the recap of our August shows.

August Update

If you've listened to more than one episode of Trifles, just a word of caution: don't skip the intro or the final few seconds of each show! We vary the introductions and we have a different closing quote on every episode.

We currently live in an age where smoker are something of pariahs. But Sherlock Holmes is probably the most famous smoker in literature. And as you can imagine, his smoking habits ranged widely. In Episode 83, we explore the incidence of cigars, cigarettes and pipes in Smoke if You Got 'Em.

On to Episode 84, where we continued our monthly feature "Inside 221B" that looks at some of the physical objects we find in the flat at 221B Baker Street. This time, it's a matter of The Morocco Case in which Holmes kept his cocaine syringe. Was it actually from Morocco?

Our next regular monthly feature, "Unpublished Cases," has to do with tales that didn't make it to the public. Episode 85 is all about The Sign of Four. But wait, you say. That was a published case. You're correct. But it contained hints of more than one untold tale...

Next up, we take a moment to fortify ourselves in Episode 86 with Wine & Spirits, as we see just how much of an oenophile Sherlock Holmes was.

And finally, in Episode 87, it's a look at The Good Doctor. What kind of medical practice did Watson run (admittedly there were many)? And why was his medicine of choice typically brandy?

A Question for You

How are we doing so far? Is there anything that's been burning your mind about the stories that you think we should discuss? We'd love your suggestions! Simply email us at trifles@ihearofsherlock.com and we'll add it to our queue of topics.
