That is, words or phrases that might seem odd yet vaguely familiar.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For instance, when Watson needs to educate himself on the finer points of Chinese pottery in "The Illustrious Client," he tells us</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I drove to the London Library in St. James’s Square, put the matter to my friend Lomax, the sub-librarian, and departed to my rooms with a goodly volume under my arm.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Lest you think that a sublibrarian is a person of letters attending to the reading needs of those in the navy, the matter is made clear to us via Donald Redmond in <i>A Study in Sources</i>:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“A sub-librarian in English parlance is the deputy head, in fact the active operating head of a library... [The London Library] was then one of the few major libraries where a member could ask the staff a question such as Watson's and receive the immediate, thorough assistance he did.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So that means when we hear of "Arthur Charpentier, sub-lieutenant in Her Majesty’s navy" in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, he was a deputy lieutenant. It's not that he was employing black magic or supernatural powers; he simply was skilled beyond the means of common folk of his time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Their shock and surprise were evident, as they expressed their astonishment by comparing him to wizard. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Inspector Stanley Hopkins expressed belief that Holmes was a wizard, adding,</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human.” [ABBE]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When the Right Honorable Trelawney Hope discovered the lost document thanks to Holmes, he declared him “a wizard, a sorcerer!” [SECO]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">James Dodd expressed surprise with Holmes's deductions: “Mr. Holmes, you are a wizard.” [BLAN]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And Watson himself exclaimed “Holmes, you are a wizard,” when Holmes mentioned grey-tinted glasses. [RETI]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But there were other realizations of Holmes's powers that didn't go quite as far as calling him a wizard. Mary Holder said, “Why, you are like a magician,” [BERY] and Mrs. Ferguson admitted that Holmes “seems to have powers of magic.”</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As any good magician knows, part of the secret is keeping people in disbelief. When the veil was lifted by Holmes explaining how he deduced Jabez Wilson's background, Wilson blurted out: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Well, I never! Like the one in the first book, it has a media connection to the great detective. </p><p>As many know, there's a key scene in the 1970 Billy Wilder movie <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i> involving a fake Loch Ness Monster. (If you don't know, don't worry — one character tells another the key facts early on.) In this novel, two video podcasters have journeyed to the lake to document their attempt to raise the head of the prop, but they've disappeared. </p><p><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/04/long-lost-prop-from-private-life-of.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Related: Long Lost Prop from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes Found</a></p><p>The supporting cast involved in this mystery includes an incompetent local police officer, an incredibly eccentric local lord who's hunting the monster himself, his daughter who runs the estate's conference center, the waiter at the hotel restaurant who hates his customers and isn't afraid to show it, and three authors: a Texan who writes action thrillers starring Ted Testosterone, a TV show parodist, and someone who writes creepy erotic noir. </p><p>Author Chris Chan tells a brisk story, perhaps a little over-seasoned with random bits of trivia, but I enjoyed learning about weird Scottish dishes, for example, and I don't mind dense writing. As with many other modern authors, it's unfortunate that his characters all sound much the same, with the same vocabularies and voices on the page; it's the plotting that's his strength.
