“as if by magic” [REDC]

Sherlock Holmes appeared to have other-worldly powers to some people in his orbit. It's not that he was employing black magic or supernatural powers; he simply was skilled beyond the means of common folk of his time.

Their shock and surprise were evident, as they expressed their astonishment by comparing him to wizard.

Inspector Stanley Hopkins expressed belief that Holmes was a wizard, adding,
“I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human.” [ABBE]

When the Right Honorable Trelawney Hope discovered the lost document thanks to Holmes, he declared him “a wizard, a sorcerer!” [SECO]

James Dodd expressed surprise with Holmes's deductions: “Mr. Holmes, you are a wizard.” [BLAN]

And Watson himself exclaimed “Holmes, you are a wizard,” when Holmes mentioned grey-tinted glasses. [RETI]

But there were other realizations of Holmes's powers that didn't go quite as far as calling him a wizard. Mary Holder said, “Why, you are like a magician,” [BERY] and Mrs. Ferguson admitted that Holmes “seems to have powers of magic.”

As any good magician knows, part of the secret is keeping people in disbelief. When the veil was lifted by Holmes explaining how he deduced Jabez Wilson's background, Wilson blurted out:
“Well, I never! I thought at first that you had done something clever, but I see that there was nothing in it, after all.” [REDH]
Leading Holmes to acknowledge “that I make a mistake in explaining. ‘Omne ignotum pro magnifico,’ you know.”

Now let's see what magical experiences the boys are having at Baker Street Elementary...

Baker Street Elementary follows the original adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, as they and their friends work through the issues of elementary school in Victorian London. An archive of all previous episodes can be viewed at www.bakerstreetelementary.org.
