Today traditionally marks the date on which "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" took place. The seventh in the series of stories that make up <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, "The Blue Carbucnle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.<br />
<br />
Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."</blockquote>
It has become a tradition at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere to acknowledge December 27th with a repeat feature. Just as the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "<a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-3My0j_zJAhUIPCYKHePhBrMQFgghMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2FSB10001424052970204464404577112431986005786&usg=AFQjCNFBOMTBdMiqlxf9tGYz0Jb-tieRKw&sig2=qjutMkGmsi34eHf1n39PhQ" target="_blank"><i>In Hoc Anno Domini</i></a>," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.<br />

In the case of this post (previously titled "The Second Morning After Christmas" [BLUE]) which has been used in <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2006</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2008/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2008</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2009/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2009</a> <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_25.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2010</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2011</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/12/second-morning-after-christmas-blue_27.html#.Ur0PksRDuSo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2012</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/12/our-annual-sherlockian-christmas.html#.Vn_hSRUrLb1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2013</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/12/happy-blue-carbuncle-day.html#.Wj8sP9-nHb1">2015</a>, and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/12/a-christmas-post-without-slush.html#.Wj8sT9-nHb0">2016</a>, we find that we have a piece that continues to please, so we'll continue the tradition.<br />

The countdown to Christmas Day is on. And whether one is a Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, atheist or anything else, it's a day that is recognized across the globe.<br />
<br />
As adults, we perhaps groan under the weight that the holiday season puts on our shoulders: from shopping to planning meals to hosting relatives, it can be a series of responsibilities that add stress to at time of year that also has emotional land mines planted among the holidays.<br />
<br />
But think back to Christmas (or any major holiday that was important to your family) when you were a child. There was a sense of wonder, of delight, and of anticipation. For the good children that meant excited anticipation; or the naughty children, perhaps it was more nervous anticipation. Whichever side you fell on, you were certainly listless. And if you were naughty, perhaps you hoped that a certain all-seeing, all-documenting someone was "list-less" as well.<br />

And so it is over at Baker Street Elementary, where anticipation looms...<br />

<span style="text-align: center;">With the </span><b style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">BSI Weekend</a></b><span style="text-align: center;"> coming up, we thought it might be helpful to provide a series of tips for the veteran attendees and the newbies alike.</span><br />

The <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars (and Friends) Weekend</a> is happening January 10-14, 2018, and it's usually a pretty big deal if you're taking time out of your life to head into New York City for 3+ days of activities with people you haven't seen in a year (or years!) or those you may have only known online until now. Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.<br />

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br />
<br />
This is the sixth annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6321981775136876837" name="more"></a>While we know how many well-informed and helpful readers we have, we were quite astonished at the quality and quantity of suggestions that can make the BSI Weekend an enjoyable and stress-free one for you. <h4>
Bags</h4>
<ul>
<li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li>
<li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li>
<li>You might also consider bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room on Saturday to carry your various purchases. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Meeting Others</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li>
<li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li>
<li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner. </li>
<li>Allow yourself time to shmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Comportment / Etiquette</h4>
<ul>
<li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li>
<li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li>
<li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your Facebook timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Attire</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li>
<li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li>
<li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Money</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. </li>
<li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li>
<li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li>
<li>The BSI table will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li>
<li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and double it. That might get you through. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Time</h4>
<ul>
<li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li>
<li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li>
<li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.</li>
<li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Getting Around</h4>
<ul>
<li>Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li>
<li>If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's <a href="http://citymapper.com/" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gogobot.gogodroid.cityguide.newyorkcity" target="_blank">Gogobot's York City Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a> by Ulmon.</li>
<li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2017/11/summary-of-events.html#sthash.K6pyuPJg.dpbs">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li>
<li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Yale Club or the Roosevelt the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>City Hall Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li>
<li>Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride <b><a href="http://web.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm">MetroCards</a></b>. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.</li>
<ul>
<li>If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. <b>Note:</b> a 65+ MetroCard <b><i>cannot</i></b> be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.</li>
<li>If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.</li>
</ul>
<li>Download a ride-hailing app such as <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787" target="_blank">Lyft</a> or a similar service. We do not recommend Uber because of their questionable business ethics.</li>
<ul>
<li>We do recommend <a href="http://ridewithvia.com/" target="_blank">Via</a>, which runs from 6:30 am - midnight and costs only $5 per ride anywhere in Manhattan. Use the code <b><a href="http://ridewithvia.com/">scott5q3</a></b> to sign up and get a free ride.</li>

Logistics</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system. </li>
<li>Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now? </li>
<li>The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable 5 years ago) – if this continues, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcaric/8379354330/">Mattias Bostrom</a>. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
The Unscheduled</h4>
<ul>
<li>If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer eat breakfast alone – saving energy for later conversations).</li>
<li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Dining</h4>
What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.<br />
<ul>
<li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. </li>
<li>There is a Cosí across the street from the Roosevelt, at 38 East 45th Street, and of course Starbucks in the station and at nearly every corner. </li>
<li>For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, <a href="http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/07/where-to-eat-near-grand-central-station-nyc.html" target="_blank">Serious Eats has a guide</a> that breaks them down by category and of course <a href="http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants+near+grand+central&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY%2C+USA" target="_blank">Yelp has many suggestions</a> as well. </li>
<li>And heaven forbid, don't forget about the <a href="http://www.redflamenyc.com/">Red Flame</a>, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.</li>
</ul>

Online</h4>
Whether you're in New York for the festivities or sequestered at home, it might be worthwhile to follow along online. Some ways to do that:<br />

Sherlock Holmes appreciated education. He admired the "[c]apsules with hundreds of bright little seeds in each" as he and Watson passed by the board-schools on the way out to Briarbrae in "The Naval Treaty." And he famously said, "Education never ends. It is a series of lessons with the greatest for the last," in "The Red Circle."<br />

So it is entirely appropriate the The Beacon Society, the Sherlockian group that recognizes and supports exemplary efforts of bringing Sherlock Holmes to children, would create a new branch especially for children. It is the Junior Sherlockian Society, and it is headed up by Shannon Carlisle, a previous winner of the Beacon Award.<br />
<br />
Through her efforts with her own classes of fourth graders, Shannon has ingeniously introduced them to Sherlock Holmes, and now it is codified so that children across the world can take part in Junior Sherlockian Training. She joined us to tell us all about the program was developed and how kids can get involved.<br />
<br />
Is your child, grandchild, or student even remotely interested in Sherlock Holmes? Or maybe they're struggling with reading or some other skill. Then the Junior Sherlockian Society is just what they need. The game's afoot!<br />

A letter from Arthur Conan Doyle to a little girl was recently sold at auction, and it gives us a glimpse into his mind at a critical time in the development of the Sherlock Holmes stories.<br />
<br />
The letter and its containing envelope were sold for $12,500. The envelope indicates it was addressed to Miss Ruby Paulson in Mount Sorrel, Loughborough — a small village in Leicestershire. Evidently, Ruby wrote to Conan Doyle expressing her love of the Sherlock Holmes stories and inquiring as to whether there would be more. And Conan Doyle replied in August of 1893 with a charming letter.<br />

Conan Doyle's letter to Ruby ran as follows:<br />

Sherlock has become very lazy and I am very stupid so that I am afraid there will not be very many more stories about the strange things that he has done. But both he and I are very pleased when we hear that we have given pleasure to nice little girls. I showed him your letter and he said that your signature showed him that your father was about 45 years of age, that your hair was brown, and that you were a clever little girl with a turn for everything except mathematics. That was what he said, but he smokes too much and has been getting quite muddled lately.<br />

That Conan Doyle would reply shows his character, both in giving a child the pleasure of a response from an increasingly famous author, and in that he himself was willing to 'play the game,' as he relayed Holmes's sentiments.<br />

But it also gives us a sense as to his feelings about the great detective at a critical time. August 1893 would have been right around the time that Conan Doyle was either writing about or contemplating the death of Sherlock Holmes. He and his wife traveled to Switzerland that summer, where he first developed the idea of killing Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls, as he had tired of the character and wished to focus his efforts on more serious writing.<br />
<br />
However, his reply to young Ruby indicates that he was far from done with Holmes. On the contrary, he demonstrated that the Holmes was alive and well in his mind through his own deductions (as elementary as they may have been). However, he seems to be preparing Ruby for what he know she'll inevitably discover that December, when the <i>Strand Magazine</i> would run "The Final Problem." Namely, that Watson takes up his pen to write "the last words in which I shall ever record the singular gifts by which my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes was distinguished." Calling Holmes "muddled" gave him a bit of an excuse to allow Holmes to wane gracefully. And also note Conan Doyle's subtle warning about the dangers of smoking in this letter to a child.<br />

What if Sherlock Holmes had turned his brilliant mind towards crime?  That is the question explored by author Rob Nunn in his exciting new book <u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Criminal-Mastermind-Baker-Street-ebook/dp/B075RDHN2Z" target="_blank"><i>The Criminal Mastermind of Baker Street</i></a></u>. The book reimagines the entire 60-story Canon through the lens of Sherlock Holmes the master criminal. We interviewed Mr. Nunn, via email, to see what made him made him decide to rewrite this champion of justice as a law breaker.<br />

<h4>
<b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere:</b> What made you decide to have the cleverest of men turn his brains to crime?</h4>
<b>Rob Nunn (RN):</b> I was rereading “The Greek Interpreter” for the umpteenth time one evening, and Gregson’s line, “It is a mercy that you are on the side of the force, and not against it, Mr. Holmes,” jumped out at me for whatever reason. I started mulling it over in my mind, what if Holmes had worked against the force instead of with it?  What would that look like? From there, I methodically worked my way through the Canon, imagining how each of the sixty stories would play out if Holmes were a criminal instead of a detective. I think I filled half a notebook with notes and speculations before I really had a grasp of what I was getting myself into. This idea had originally started out as a possible article for the <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/">Baker Street Journal</a></i>, but I quickly realized that it would adapt itself nicely to a book format.<br />

<b>IHOSE: </b>Your book covers the entire Canon. How did you organize the stories? Did you have to rearrange some to help with your story arc?</h4>
<b>RN:</b> I modeled my fictional biography off of William Baring-Gould’s <i>Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</i> and used his chronology exclusively to outline my story arc. Once I had the dates in place, I fleshed out the outline with my notes and figured out where in the chronology other important events such as Holmes telling Watson about his early years and the Ripper murders of London would go. Having the outline of dates really helped keep me from twisting facts to suit theories.<br />

<h4>
<b>IHOSE: </b>Which story was the most difficult for you to incorporate in making Holmes a criminal? What made this story uniquely tricky?</h4>
<b>RN:</b> “A Scandal in Bohemia.” I tried a couple of different versions of that story before I settled on a take that I liked.  You have to walk a fine line with the character of Irene Adler. She’s only in one canonical story, but she looms so large in the mind of many readers! One day, I would consider completely writing her off, and over-inflating her role in Holmes’ life the next. There are so many different ways to use that character, but I found a way to keep her role in <i>The Criminal Mastermind of Baker Street</i> very close to the role that Doyle gave her. I was really happy when I finally found an angle to use SCAN that showed Holmes’ criminal cunning while being true to the canonical characters.<br />

<b>IHOSE: </b>If you were stranded on a desert island with just one Sherlock Holmes story, which would it be and why?</h4>

<b>RN: </b><i>The Sign of the Four</i> is my favorite. Starting from the scene with Watson’s watch to the boat chase down the Thames, this is a story that has so many aspects! You get to see Holmes and Watson’s domestic life at 221B, Watson’s only recorded romance, a hidden and then stolen treasure, a murderous pygmy and a vengeful peg-legged man, the Baker Street Irregulars, Holmes being snarky with an inspector, I could go on and on about how much is packed into SIGN. That is definitely my desert island Holmes story.</div>

<b>IHOSE: </b>You are currently the head of the Program Committee for the <a href="http://beaconsociety.com/">Beacon Society</a>. Tell us a little about what this job entails.</h4>

<b>RN: </b>The Program Committee proposes education related programs to the Beacon Society board of directors. We also recommend educational resources and activities for the Beacon Society to offer to educators in spreading the word about teaching students about Sherlock Holmes. The program committee is currently assessing the resources we have and looking for other resources to make available at all levels of education. Education never ends, and neither does trying to get students to learn about Holmes!</div>

Speaking of Sherlock Holmes and education, I have an essay about teaching Sherlock Holmes to my fifth graders in Chris Redmond’s new <i><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/11/about-being-sherlockian-its-more-than.html" rel="nofollow">About Being a Sherlockian</a></i> that is out this month and I am part of an upcoming BSI Profession Series book titled <i>Education Never Ends: Educators, Education and the Sherlockian Canon</i> due out in 2020. That seems really far away, but my deadlines for the project aren’t!</div>

Yes, trepidation. For some people, attending the Weekend is a difficult and onerous task.</span><br />

Others boycott for personal reasons. But there are some who simply can't afford the price of the accumulated events and the travel required to get there.</span><br />

Watson Fund</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">, a financial assistance package for the BSI Weekend, and credited it as his most proud achievement of leading the BSI.</span><br />

A carefully pseudonymous John H. Watson presides over the fund and welcomes contributions, which can be made by check payable to John H. Watson and sent (without return address on the envelope) to <b>Dr. Watson, c/o The Baker Street Irregulars, at 7938 Mill Stream Circle, Indianapolis, IN 46278</b>; your letters are forwarded unopened, and Dr. Watson will acknowledge your generosity. Requests for assistance should also be mailed <i><b>immediately</b></i> to Dr. Watson at the same address, and <b>must be received by December 3</b> for timely processing of requests.</blockquote>

And while there are plenty of opportunities around the world to do this on a local level, the BSI Weekend happens just once a year and celebrates a long-standing (83 years!) tradition that was started by Christopher Morley.</span><br />

Traditionally this was done through simple check-writing, but then the BSI Cocktail Reception added </span><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend/auction.html" style="background-color: white; color: #006f85; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">an auction and drawing</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">, which also raise money for the Fund. We use the term "Sherlockian" fairly frequently around here. To us, it's a term that means more than just being a fan of the hit BBC series. And it's even more than someone who has been studying the Sherlock Holmes stories for years.<br />
<br />
No, "Sherlockian" is a term of endearment, an acknowledgment of a fellow "geek," a realization that Sherlock Holmes is more than a character in 60 original stories, countless movies, TV shows, stage plays, fanfic, pastiches, podcasts and more.<br />
<br />
To us, "Sherlockian" is a badge of honor. It's a code word for someone who dedicates countless hours to the pursuit of a pastime that involves immersing themselves not only in a world of storytelling, but also in a world with other like-minded people.<br />
<br />
And so it was that <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose99">Christopher Redmond</a> assembled some 60 like-minded people to write a collection of essays. You may recall that a little over a year ago, he debuted <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/11/exactly-sixty-one.html#.WhZVwEqnHb0"><i>About Sixty: Why Every Sherlock Holmes Story Is the Best</i></a>, where 60 authors were each assigned one story from the Canon and had to make the case for its preeminence. It was an exercise in cleverness (for the authors) and sadism (for the editor). And it turned out remarkably well.<br />
<br />
Never one to let a good idea go to waste and directly following the success of <i>About Sixty</i>, Chris contacted 60 Sherlockians with a similar idea: another collection of essays, but this time about Sherlockians and what they do, with an emphasis on the authors’ stories of their own direct experiences. The result is <i><a href="http://wildsidepress.com/about-being-a-sherlockian-edited-by-christopher-redmond-paperback/">About Being a Sherlockian</a></i>, which is as much an explanation to the external world about our unique hobby as it is a journal of sorts, bringing us into the mind of familiar (or at least familiar types of) Sherlockians.<br />

The book embraces the world of traditional Sherlockian societies and friendship, as well as creators, scholars, the fandom, collectors, and other branches of this amazing adventure.<br />

Edgar Smith long ago penned an essay in <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/">The Baker Street Journal</a></i> called "<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/02/what-is-it-that-we-love-in-sherlock.html#.WhZao0qnHb0">The Implicit Holmes</a>" that opened with the line "What is it that we love in Sherlock Holmes?" It became an instant classic and is an essay that so many of us use to help explain our interest in the stories.<br />

But <i><b>About Being a Sherlockian</b></i> goes much further than that. It explores the deeper ties we have not only with Holmes, but with each other.
