If the message on the screen of your phone starts out CNT KBI KFF SBNMY RTG SI WKMG, you might guess that it's a cipher. You might even guess that KFF represented either TOO or ALL, although ODD and EBB are among the possibilities. Getting that one word right would give you a couple of common letters, and then you could start working out other possibilities, very much the way Sherlock Holmes does in "The Dancing Men".<br />

You can do such a puzzle on an app. <a href="http://beacegames.itch.io/holmes-cryptic-cipher" target="_blank">Holmes Cryptic Cipher</a> is a code puzzle game and it's available for your Android or iOS device. You tackle the cipher by sliding one letter onto another on a control panel at the bottom of the screen. Try moving F onto L, for example, and K onto A, and gradually words start taking shape. Trial and error is the key, and there's an Undo button. <br />

I can claim to have mastered three of the four levels of difficulty to the point that I can solve a puzzle in five minutes or less. I haven't tried the "Expert" level yet. The first levels are available in a free version of the game, with the higher levels costing a token amount.<br />
<br />
When you finally solve a puzzle you'll find that you have a brief passage from <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. In this case the first four words turn out to be YOU ARE ALL WRONG, the beginning of a passage from "The Engineer's Thumb". Those twelve stories add up to almost 100,000 words, so the number of short passages suitable for the purpose is pretty high.<br />

"I came up with the idea and built a prototype about 10 years ago and then promptly forgot about it," says Gilan Israel, one of the two programmers, now based in Jerusalem, who make up <a href="http://beacegames.nfshost.com/" target="_blank">Beace Games</a>. He's originally from Vancouver.<br />

"After attending a <a href="http://globalgamejam.org/" target="_blank">Global Game Jam</a> together in January 2015," says Israel, "my neighbour Bill Burdick (originally from Chicago) worked evenings and weekends with me for about a month to turn that old idea into a published game. This is the first time either of us has published a game.<br />
<br />
"We are currently working on some improvements including adding scoring, hints and competitive play through social sites like Facebook. We're also working on a similar game using texts from the King James Version of the Bible."<br />

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Livanov" target="_blank">Vasily Livanov</a> is probably the greatest Sherlock Holmes you've never heard of. Or, if you're an intrepid Sherlockian, it's likely you <i>have</i> heard of him.<br />
<br />
From 1979 to 1986 Lenfilm produced <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Sherlock_Holmes_and_Dr._Watson" target="_blank">five films</a> (split into 11 episodes) for Soviet television starring Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Dr. Watson. According to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Sherlock_Holmes_and_Dr._Watson" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>, the films were as follows:<br />

<li>1979 <i>Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson</i></li>
<ul>
<li>1st episode: "Acquaintance" (based on <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band").</li>
<li>2nd episode: "Bloody Inscription" (based on <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, with a scene from <i>The Sign of the Four </i>at the beginning).</li>
</ul>
<li>1980 <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson</i></li>

<li>1983 <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: The Treasures of Agra</i>. Two episodes based on <i>The Sign of the Four</i> and "A Scandal in Bohemia".</li>
<li>1986 <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: The Twentieth Century Approaches</i>. Two episodes based on "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb," "The Adventure of the Second Stain", "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" and "His Last Bow".</li>

The series was extremely popular, earning Livanov an Honorary MBE "for service to the theatre and performing arts" in 2006. And in 2007, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/11/was-in-city-in-russia-gold_20.html#.VTH6iiFVikq" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a statue of Livanov and Solomin as Holmes and Watson was installed</a> at the United Kingdom Embassy in Moscow.<br />
<br />
But in 1985, between the fourth and fifth films, Souzmultfilm studio produced an animated short about Sherlock Holmes that was nine minutes in length, called <a href="https://youtu.be/E4kLaF1Q-Ug" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and I</a>. It features a dog named Tom reminiscing to his pups about his adventures with Sherlock Holmes and a very unlikely pair of burglars. As you have probably inferred by now, Livanov provided his voice for Sherlock Holmes.<br />

The BSI Manuscript series continues to churn out remarkable books on an annual basis. In 2015, we're pleased to see the manuscript for "The Empty House" printed, analyzed and opined in <i><a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/abyss.html" target="_blank">Out of the Abyss</a></i>, edited by Robert Katz, BSI ("Dr. Ainstree"), Steven Rothman, BSI ("<i>The Valley of Fear</i>") and Andrew Solberg, BSI ("Professor Coram").<br />
<br />
The trio of editors joined us for a discussion of how this project came about - including getting access to the MS from the famed <a href="http://www.rosenbach.org/" rel="" target="_blank">Rosenbach Museum and Library</a> in Philadelphia. The inimitable Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach (who is most decidedly <b>NOT</b> a physician), rare book dealer and bibliophile, owned the original manuscript and it has remained with his collection in the museum and library. Of course, seeing the story in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own handwriting is illuminating - particularly as one can look at the corrections (or lack thereof) and get a sense of the author's thought process. Seeing that in light of Holmes's resurrection in "The Empty House" is even more thrilling.<br />
<br />
Contributors to this volume include Catherine Cooke, BSI ("<i>The Book of Life</i>"), who investigates the location of the Empty House, based on previous scholarship throughout the ages; Lyndsay Faye, BSI ("Kitty Winter") who contributes a short story; Russell Merritt, BSI ("The Trepoff Murder") with a look at the Col. Morans in film; Brent Morris on sleight of hand and card playing; Chris Redmond, BSI ("Billy") and Lindsay Colwell on the theme of resurrection; and more.<br />
<br />
In addition to discussing everything that went into this volume, we have a sneak preview of the next volume that Bob and Andy are working on together. While they don't yet have a title, the topic is certainly one that will attract a number of readers.<br />

Today at 11:40 p.m. we remember that it was exactly 103 years ago the RMS <i>Titanic</i> struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and took 1,517 souls with her by the time she sank at 2:20 a.m.<br />

The reason it is relevant to Sherlockians is that there are some loose connections worthy of mention. The first is that there were two Marconi wireless radios aboard, staffed by Jack Phillips and Harold Bride. As you observed, the opening quote noted that there was a wireless mentioned in "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane," in which Holmes recounted,<br />

"It was my old housekeeper who heard of it first by that strange wireless by which such people collect the news of the countryside."</blockquote>

Contrary to popular belief the sinking of the <i>Titanic </i>was not the first time the SOS signal was used (it came into use in 1908), but Bride mentioned to Phillips, who had been using the more popular British CQD signal, that he should use SOS as it might be the last time he would have the opportunity to do so.<br />

The second connection, is William Seil's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Titanic-Tragedy-Adventures/dp/0947533354?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969"><i>Sherlock Holmes and the Titanic Tragedy: A Case to Remember</i></a>, which was also a nod to Walter Lord's famous recounting of the tragedy in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Night-Remember-Walter-Lord/dp/0805077642?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969"><i>A Night to Remember</i></a><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEihjcIvnYc_N1FSgMRWJH_YysUMIyv64vyWT9ucNCmh-6gx51e6iIoMwV-OrSw4ZwfT62zQ5scrVzutVQuxkuJBshD2nge05uWxNCgDjxPXrgoKJOS240nBWkuoWticUIUssghlGqXJCocpleli8sVhR0R-TpWkQOzrzVg6DNu6-qaetePktvUZSlxFtapBfO0K-KcblCDqY3v8b-Qir-b_d4wYpCV4=" />. In the Sherlock Holmes pastiche, we find the great detective and his faithful colleague on board the doomed liner following an agent on his way to the U.S. with secret submarine plans. While fanciful, it was a quick and fun read.<br />

For those of you who may be interested in this sort of thing, the <a href="http://titanichistoricalsociety.net/">Titanic Historical Society</a> (THS) has been in existence since 1963. The late founder Ed Kamuda owned a jewelry store in western Massachusetts, where you can find the <a href="http://www.titanic1.org/museum/index.asp">Titanic Museum</a>, Membership in THS includes complimentary admission to the museum and a subscription to the quarterly publication, <i>The Commutator</i>. In addition, the <a href="http://www.titanicattraction.com/">Titanic Museum Attraction</a> in Branson, MO and Pigeon Forge, TN has all sorts of artifacts and a passenger experience that brings visitors onboard through the eyes of a first, second or third-class passenger.<br />

As the fateful anniversary is upon us, please take some time to remember the souls of all of those brave men, women and children who perished aboard the Titanic and the icy waters of the North Atlantic 103 years ago. While the tragedy may have been avoidable, it will stand as one of the greatest lessons of all time of man's hubris in the face of nature, and will forever remind us that we need to plan for the worst possible contingencies despite our confidence in our own technological advances.<br />
