Those of our readers who collect various editions of the Canon may be interested in a new imprint/series, entited <a href="http://www.pulptheclassics.com/">Pulp! the Classics!</a> and published by Oldcastle Books.<br />
<br />
Pulp! the Classics is exactly what it sounds like: the re-publication of classic works of literature with new, pulp covers. The original text remains intact -it is only the cover and the blurb that they have "pulp-ified."  Of course, many of the titles chosen for this transformation - from Dickens to Shakespeare - were already considered to be, if not "pulp" fiction, then at the very least popular fiction in their day and age, despite their prestigious status as classics in our time. Nonetheless, it is an intriguing collection.<br />
<br />
Thus far, the imprint has only published one Sherlock Holmes title - <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles, </i>with, it seems, no intention of touching upon other works of Sherlock Holmes.The choice is, perhaps, not original,<br />
given detective fiction's history as pulp fiction in the 20th century; nevertheless, for those who collect various editions of the Canon, this would form an interesting counterpart to the more expensive and prestigious editions, such as<a href="http://www.eastonpress.com/Books/prod/BDD/THE-HOUND-OF-THE-BASKERVILLES_2871.aspx"> this version</a> of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles </i>from Easton Press, which has recently come to my attention as a particularly exemplary cause to make the credit card bill of yours truly weep.<br />

Additionally, Oldcastle Books has pulp-ified a number of Victorian titles, from <i>The Picture of Dorian Gray </i>to Dickens and <i>Tess of the D'Urbervilles - </i>providing interesting possibilities for collectors not only of Sherlock Holmes, but of Victorian literature in general.<br />

One also cannot help but notice the striking resemblance between the pulp cover of the Sherlock Holmes novel and some old posters of Basil Rathbone films, which I present for your comparison:<br />

Every generation has its Sherlock Holmes. Gillette. Norwood. Rathbone. Cushing. Wonter. Brett. Livanov. Cumberbatch. Each squarely inhabits a decade or more of being associated with the great detective, and each has left a unique and indelible mark on the role.<br />
<br />
We were fortunate to discover Sherlock Holmes in the Jeremy Brett era. The richness of the earlier Granada episodes, with their faithfulness to the Canon, period setting and excellent cast made for viewing experience that burned him into our minds.<br />
<br />
Brett brought a lot to the role of Sherlock Holmes, but the eccentricities of his portrayal in the waning years of the series may blot out some of the more subtle expressions of character in the earlier ones. We submit that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcPb4FKUWWM&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">the video below</a>, which is a thoughtful editing of some of these very special moments, should make one think again about the masterful acting skills that Brett brought to the role to form a much more human and fully dimensioned Sherlock Holmes.<br />

Not to be outdone by his friend, Sherlock Holmes competitor and Frankenstein co-star, Jonny Lee Miller is getting into the charity act as well.<br />

You may recall that in January, <b><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/01/benedict-cumberbatch-signs-deerstalker.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Benedict Cumberbatch signed a deerstalker cap for charity</a></b>. That auction, held on eBay, raised more than £2,000 for <a href="http://www.mungos.org/about/values_and_objectives" target="_blank">St. Mungo's</a>. The bidding was intense, and one lucky fan walked away with the treasured "death frisbee" for the keeping. And St. Mungo's earned a respectable gift for its important work with the homeless.<br />

Inspired by his erstwhile colleague and costar, Miller has decided to make a more permanent impact than left by the Sharpie that Cumberbatch used on the Sherlockian head-gear. As you know, Miller has a number of tattoos on his body, which he has shown on <i>Elementary</i>.<br />

Of course, one of them — "26.2" to be exact — represents the many marathons that Jonny has run (a marathon being 26.2 miles long). In fact, he ran one ultramarathon last year (50 miles) to support <a href="http://www.jonahsjustbegun.org/" target="_blank">Jonah's Just Begun</a>, a foundation established to help cure Sanfilippo disease, and <a href="http://www.crowdrise.com/jonnyleemiller50miler" target="_blank">raised over $170,000</a>.<br />

This year, Miller is taking part in a 112-mile long <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironman_Triathlon" target="_blank">Iron Man Triathlon</a> in an effort to help generate enough fan support for him to join the other Sherlock Holmes — Robert Downey, Jr., to be exact — in <b style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.vulture.com/2013/05/robert-downey-jrs-iron-man-4-kickstarter.html" target="_blank">Iron Man 4</a></b>, which at this point exists as a Kickstarter project. If Miller is successful in doing so, it means he'll have shared the screen with the other Sherlock Holmes of his time.<br />

It has all the trappings of a Holmes classic: a disease that was killing off thousands of people throughout the ages; a doctor working hard to find a miracle cure; and a man on the threshold of making a major career decision. You would not be <i>too</i> surprised if you discovered a lost Conan Doyle manuscript with such a premise.<br />

Thomas Goetz's <i><b>The Remedy: Robert Koch, Arthur Conan Doyle and the Quest to Cure Tuberculosis</b></i> is (<a href="http://amzn.to/1jpmvbJ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon US</a> | <a href="http://amzn.to/1rVMYRY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon UK</a>) such a book....and what makes it remarkable is that not only does Conan Doyle feature in the narrative, but serves as a gripping "history" of deductive sciences in medicine...and ultimately, in the factors that shaped the development of Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
Placing itself in a distinct narrative context, <i>The Remedy </i>outlines Dr. Robert Koch's efforts to find a cure for tuberculosis, which had a very high mortality rate. Goetz not only describes Koch's work in detail, but also details how researchers using the scientific method came across what is now known as "germ theory." With an eye towards Holmes scholarship, Goetz also provides a strong backdrop into how the more scientifically-oriented tenor of pre-Victorian times influenced Conan Doyle's approach towards Holmes' methodology. (Consider it "the science of crime", if you will...but even that is unnecessarily limiting to Goetz's approach).<br />

But the revelations come towards the end of the book, when Conan Doyle becomes a player in the search for a cure for tuberculosis. As Conan Doyle makes his way towards Germany to learn details, we find that...well, that would be spoiling the ending, wouldn't it? But <i>The Remedy</i> deftly combines a strong narrative with a great overview of the rapid development of science and medicine, making it a very strong read for both Holmesians and those with an interest in the history of medicine.<br />
<br />
But for those with an interest in scholarship, Thomas Goetz's <i>The Remedy</i> provides us with a portrait of the author in transition - during this time, Conan Doyle shifted away from medicine and into writing. <i>The Remedy</i> provides some context for this transition, but most importantly, it balances a strong historical narrative with a precise insight into how various factors converged into a unified approach.<br />
<br />
In short, <i>The Remedy</i> is a definite must-read, making a solid link between advances in medical science, one man's quest to find a cure for a devastating disease....and Conan Doyle developing Sherlock Holmes' character. <br />
