Some Sherlockians signal their love of Holmes by wearing a deerstalker or donning a scarf worn by Benedict Cumberbatch. But if you fancy something, say, more in the style of <a href="http://amzn.to/1gFq8qV" target="_blank">Basil Rathbone in the 1940's</a>, well, that's a challenge. Coats, watches and clothes from the BBC are just a click away on <a href="http://www.sherlockabilia.com/index.html" target="_blank">Sherlockabilia</a> but good luck trying to find records from the Universal Pictures costume department in 1943.<br />

Time and mystery are two reasons why Hollywood memorabilia auctions can make front page news.  The recent auction by Bonhams sold a Maltese Falcon statue used in the movie for over $4 million.  There was less excitement over a <a href="http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21427/lot/221/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">jacket</a> worn by Basil Rathbone in the 1939 "Hound" ($13,750) -- and, in an auction by another firm, what appears to be <a href="http://www.icollector.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Basil-Rathbone-Donegal-Hat_i18037220" target="_blank">a hat worn by Basil Rathbone</a> in the Universal film series.  </div>

The hat reportedly sold for $1,000.  But was it really worn by Rathbone?</div>

As forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee observes, "when the eye does not see, the mind does not know."  We can learn much by studying photographs of Rathbone's headgear.</div>

For the first three films the actor wore a thick-brimmed fedora. Universal used the same opening credits for the entire series, so you can see it at the beginning of any of the films, as the camera pans up to show Rathbone, puffing a non-canonical calabash, next to Bruce.  In "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" he wore a rather undistinguished gray fedora. </div>

The hat also <a href="https://plus.google.com/photos/118216759969087724610/albums/5968787357291363841?authkey=CIyinq-czKOhFg" target="_blank">appears in color in many of the lobby cards</a> from the film series (see slideshow below). Kodachrome 35mm color still film (introduced in 1936) could have been used for these pictures.  If the stills were not otherwise tinted by Universal's publicity department, it seems that Rathbone wore either brown or gray tweed hats.  Brown was a typical costume tone in black and white movies as it read well on screen.<br />

Rathbone's hat from the Universal series was a success because it evolved the great detective's deerstalker to a more contemporary yet distinctive style.  In so doing, by the way, Universal's costume designers tipped their hats, as it were, to a prior Sherlock, Clive Brook, who wore the headgear for the first sound Sherlock Holmes film in 1929.</div>

The Basil Rathbone hat recently sold at auction has an iron-clad chain of evidence leading right back to the costumer for the Universal Sherlock Holmes films, and indeed couldn't have been sold as represented without it being completely vetted. The fact is that Rathbone had several hats that he wore throughout the series, similarly styled. Speculation based on hand-tinted lobby cards, or a grainy black and white screen captures, or estimates of size, etc., based upon a thumbnail photograph without anything else in the photograph for context or comparison is, to put it as gently as possible, worthless. To be compelled to debate this, or even dignify it with a response, is to give it credence. It's Rathbone's hat (at least it is one of them). This piece has done nothing but cast doubt on something that is not in doubt, and irresponsibly forced a “defense” for something that should not have to be defended. </blockquote>

For many, stories involving Sherlock Holmes and Watson often feature elements of pastiche and mashup, with Holmes running into various other characters in Victorian Literature. Thankfully, Airship 27 Productions has released the fifth volume of<b> </b>its <b><i><a href="http://amzn.to/1efu92e" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective</a></i> </b>series, which is not just a great gift suggestion...but is well worth owning by any serious Sherlockian.<br />
<br />
All of the stories in this series focus on classic Holmesian deduction and detective work - perhaps written with a slightly more modern influence, but these would be tales that Conan Doyle himself would be proud to consider part of the Canon. (Even down to the interior illustrations, these tales read like long-lost editions of <b><i>The Strand</i></b>).<br />
<br />
Thankfully, there are enough stylistic variances that make this a <i>really</i> great collection, including<br />
<ul>
<li>Chuck Miller's "The Adventure of the Other Man", which seemingly presents the reader with a very unusual portrait of Holmes;</li>
<li>Aaron Smith's "The Adventure of the Stolen Centennial";</li>
<li>A great multi-viewpoint story in I.A. Watson's "The Abominable Merridew"; and </li>
<li>Andrew Salmon's "The Adventure of the Invisible Assassin", which is definitely one of the more clever modern stories written.</li>
</ul>

A pair of essays finishes <b><i><a href="http://amzn.to/1efu92e" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective Vol. 5</a></i></b>, and there is only one "problem" with the book - once finished, you will be sorely tempted to pursue the first four volumes.</div>

When Sherlock Holmes was at the height of his popularity in the 1890s, it took Conan Doyle months to write new stories for the <i>Strand Magazine</i>. But the months of waiting for Sherlock: Series 4 will be much less empty thanks to <a href="http://www.sherlockthenetwork.com/" target="_blank">Sherlock: The Network</a>, a new app for iPhone and iPad that debuted yesterday in the UK and will be available next week in the US.<br />

Homeless, Not Holmes-less</h4>
A joint effort of The Project Factory and Hartswood Films, the app lets you join the detective's Homeless Network (the current iteration of the Baker Street Irregulars) to unscramble audio recordings, hack computers, decrypt messages and find clues in pictures. "From missing persons and bomb threats to poison and murder, all threads lead back to Sherlock Holmes," say the app's creators.<br />

There are ten cases to solve by collecting items, information and money to help your quest. Players receive messages from Holmes, Watson, Mycroft and Molly, and information resides in your very own Mind Palace. Famous places from the series are shown on a map of London, with information on key locations from the show. And the app features new video and audio of Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Mark Gatiss.<br />

This official Sherlock app contains over 30 minutes of exclusive video content, games, and an entire mystery for you and Sherlock to solve. Answer Sherlock’s messages to source and deliver information to him at 221B Baker Street. Navigate virtual London in search of information. Communicate with Sherlock and others in The Network. The more valuable you are, the higher you will rise in the ranks.<br />

As you know, this Sunday evening, January 19, 2014 at 9:58 p.m. EST, <a href="http://www.pbs.org/sherlock" target="_blank"><i>Sherlock </i>returns to Masterpiece</a> on PBS with Season 3. And following a very successful tradition (first started with our Twitter chat of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/10/to-me-than-twitter-illu_25.html" target="_blank">Season 1</a> and followed by the same for <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/05/for-second-time-abbe_4.html" target="_blank">Season 2</a>), we've been asked by the fine team at PBS to host a Twitter chat during the show.<br />

A Twitter chat is simply a live commentary that runs along with the television program; it is not designed to share spoilers, nor is it meant to replace the show itself. Think of it as a living, breathing, trivia section from IMDb.com, with interaction and observations. Our particular interest is finding the references, quotes, characters and untold tales from the original Sherlock Holmes stories as they appear in this modern production, and pointing them out with #OriginalQuote.<br />

We'll be starting with "The Empty Hearse" on the 19th, followed by "The Sign of Three" on the 26th and concluding with "His Last Vow" on February 2. The chats will run concurrently with the show, which begins straight after <i>Downton Abbey</i>, beginning at 9:58 p.m. EST and concluding at 11:30 p.m.<br />
