Integrating several of these factors into a single story can lead to very irregular storytelling, focusing less on the mystery and more on the uniqueness of the theme.</p><p>Timothy Miller's <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/41uBRYG" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> is a uniquely intriguing piece of Sherlockian writing, integrating real-life historical events and genre themes into a compelling read that deserves your attention.</p><p>Miller's premise is intriguing and unique: in 1923, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson had a serious falling-out over their belief systems. Sherlock Holmes has adopted the philosophy of spiritualism over his usual belief in deduction much to Dr. Watson's chagrin. Although they split, Watson is approached by Lady Evelyn Carnarvon whose father sponsored the expedition that discovered the <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/archaeologist-opens-tomb-of-king-tut" target="_blank">Tomb of Tutenkamen</a>. Soon, Holmes and Watson are joined by a third character, a woman named Estelle Roberts who is a medium who can communicate with the dead.</p><p>Miller's <b><i><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/93253/9781645060819" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> also takes a unique narrative approach, splitting the narration between Dr. James Watson and Estelle Roberts. While this may dismay Sherlockian purists, it provides great tension between the potentially rational and potentially supernatural. The dual narrative opens up the story, providing insights and perspectives that could be easily missed in a straightforward pastiche. As the mystery progresses, Miller introduces various characters who help both Holmes and Watson shine.</p><p>Describing the plot in greater detail would be unfair to Timothy Miller, as <b><i>The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</i> </b>provides a great reading experience for Sherlockians. Or makes an excuse if he can't properly divine information from meager clues at hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And yet, that is exactly the position Watson placed him in when he tested Holmes's powers in the opening of <i>The Sign of Four</i>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Handing Holmes a pocket watch, Watson asks him for his “opinion upon the character or habits of the late owner,” who happens to be, unknown to Sherlock Holmes, Watson's own brother.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in doing so, Watson admits to setting a trap for Holmes:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I handed him over the watch with some slight feeling of amusement in my heart, for the test was, as I thought, an impossible one, and I intended it as a lesson against the somewhat dogmatic tone which he occasionally assumed.” </div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Holmes quickly surveyed the watch and gave this excuse: “The watch has been recently cleaned, which robs me of my most suggestive facts.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In his mind, Watson took the victory lap:</div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“In my heart I accused my companion of putting forward a most lame and impotent excuse to cover his failure. He was left with good prospects, but he threw away his chances, lived for some time in poverty with occasional short intervals of prosperity, and finally, taking to drink, he died. Here at <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i>, we recognized the innocence and joy of Baker Street Elementary as a throwback to the Sunday comics of yore, and have featured this strip every other Sunday on this site for the past eight years (along with some related commentary).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Think of what a decade of Holmes and Watson together gave us: the two first met in early 1881 and their exploits included <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, the entire collection of <i>The Adventures</i> and <i>The Memoirs</i>, ending only with "death" of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls with Professor Moriarty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Those tales meant we would encounter a clever female foil for Sherlock Holmes, a client with a severed digit, a scam targeted at a man with red hair, a snake as a murder weapon, short hair and a blue dress as a requirement for employment, a disappearing horse, a murderous pygmy, an travel-worn American set on vengeance, and a number of past acquaintances whose reappearance meant death.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This was just the beginning of a 40-year journey. Will Baker Street Elementary have the same longevity? The type of wood mattered too; oak and ash were preferred for their mystical qualities.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Interestingly, in Bram Stoker's <i>Dracula</i>, the Count wasn't defeated with a stake through his heart. According to Mina Murray's narrative, Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris pried open the lid of the box in which Dracula lay, the one decapitating him with a Kukri and the other piercing his heart with a bowie knife: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"></span></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">But, on the instant, came the sweep and flash of Jonathan’s great knife. Because invariably, people found themselves in unfortunate circumstances and they needed help. Oftentimes, the sentiment was “<i>I come to you as a last resource</i>,” as Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope explained.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">How appropriate was her surname? By the end of the story, Holmes located the document, saving the career of the cabinet secretary and restoring hope in his wife.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Most cases begin with a severe sense of hopelessness or pessimism, Clients arrive, convinced that there is only one man in all of England who can help, as they dolefully present their woeful problems. And yet, the Sherlock Holmes stories are filled with hope and optimism.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Bruce-Partington Plans," for example, there is more at stake than the missing plans of a submarine. Violet Westbury, fiancée of the dead suspect Arthur Cadogan West, implore Sherlock Holmes, </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Oh, Mr. Holmes, if you could only, only save his honour! It was so much to him.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in clearing up the mystery, Holmes provides comfort for those involved, as he does in so many other cases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Finding the treasure (although losing it in the Thames) in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, he brings closure for Mary Morstan and a marital prospect for Dr. Watson. Holmes is able to vanquish the family curse in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, leaving the young baronet to make a life for himself.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here are just a handful of examples of optimism: Henry Baker's hat and goose are restored and James Ryder is given a second chance [BLUE]; a terrible secret is exposed and a young family reconnected [YELL]; the shame and fear of a son's illness are wiped away with an alternative diagnosis [BLAN]; a problem child is exiled and there is a chance to repair a failed marriage [PRIO]; we could even make the case that an inherited medical practice following a murder means rosier times ahead for the physician [RESI].</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Was Sherlock Holmes a pessimist or an optimist? Some might call him a realist. But, capitalizing on the misfortunes of others, maybe he was more of an opportunist. An opportunist who provided promising paths forward for his clients.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The very <a href="https://episodes.fm/1198869691/episode/ZDc2MjM1ZTExYTk2ZWFhYWI1Y2RlMWFjNzk2YTRlNWQ" target="_blank">first episode</a> of <i><a href="https://episodes.fm/1198869691" target="_blank">Trifles</a></i> looked at how common the hopeful was in the Canon:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="autoplay *; You look at these scattered houses, and you are impressed by their beauty. I look at them, and the only thought which comes to me is a feeling of their isolation and of the impunity with which crime may be committed there.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Consider how this might affect how he inherently trusts other people. In his earliest cases—from his university days—he discovered that those closest to us might betray our trust.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The <i>Gloria Scott</i>," Trevor Senior is taken gross advantage of by Hudson, one of his former shipmates, which ultimately leads to Trevor's stress-induced death. And in "The Musgrave Ritual," Brunton, the long-time butler of Hurlstone, betrayed his employer's trust to go treasure-hunting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So, years later, when Holmes was speaking to Watson in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, noting “Women are never to be entirely trusted,—not the best of them,” we shouldn't be terribly surprised. Especially when Holmes backs up his claim with his previous experience: </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance-money.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Is Sherlock Holmes's cynicism and deep distrust any surprise?
