My father, Don Redmond, BSI, 2s. ("Good Old Index"), first read the Sherlock Holmes stories in his boyhood, and his father’s copy of the grey-green three-volume Conan Doyle’s Best Books sits on my bookshelf today. Indeed, he was interested enough in Sherlockian matters to buy a copy of T. S. Blakeney’s 1932 book <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1B2fx7r" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: Fact or Fiction?</a></i> somewhere along the way. But the enthusiasm that would land him knee-deep in Sherlockian scholarship and bring him to membership in the Baker Street Irregulars lay largely dormant until the 1960s. That was when I as a young teenager read the stories and became fascinated by all things Sherlockian, quickly getting involved to the point that my father had to come along just to keep an eye on me.<br />
<br />
His death on October 22 in Kingston, Ontario, at the age of 92, thus ends some fifty years of Sherlockian activity that earned him both that Irregular investiture (as “Good Old Index” in 1969) and a Two Shilling Award, not to mention memberships and friendships in Sherlockian societies far and wide.<br />
<br />
His writing includes dozens of articles — I hope to prepare an anthology some day — and two substantial books, <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1zhqH3A" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Sources</a></i> and then <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1xferTf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Among the Pirates: Copyright and Conan Doyle in America 1890-1930</a></i>. The latter book completes the circle by including a bibliographic discussion of the Best Books volume with which my father had begun his reading decades before.<br />

In the 1960s, I of course began writing Sherlockian juvenilia, and DAR, who was already an established scholar in the field of library administration, soon was not only advising me on my work but producing his own. Sometimes he gave his articles titles that he could straight-facedly include in his academic curriculum vitae, such as “Some Notes on the Ceylon Problem”, an early article in the <i><a href="http://sherlock-holmes.org.uk/journal.php" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Journal</a></i>. His study “Some Chemical Problems in the Canon” (<i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Journal</a></i>, 1964) remains a definitive explanation of Holmes’s chemical work.<br />

With me he joined the nearest Sherlockian society, the newly organized Great Alkali Plainsmen of Greater Kansas City, perhaps largely because I was too young to travel into the big city without an adult. Famously he organized a meeting of the Plainsmen on the campus of the University of Kansas, where he was then working, and John Bennett Shaw was appalled, after travelling all the way from Oklahoma to attend, to discover that alcoholic beverages were not allowed to be served on state property.<br />

Later, living in Ontario, he played a key role in the creation of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection at the (then) Metropolitan Toronto Library. I recently had the opportunity to tell that story as part of a small volume, <i>The Four Pillars</i>, published in honor of the collection. The 1971 symposium held by the Library to launch that collection led to the creation of the <a href="http://www.torontobootmakers.com/" target="_blank">Bootmakers of Toronto</a>, and DAR was (as was I, though still young and busy with other parts of my life) an early member. When the Master Bootmaker award was created some years later, he was among the four initial recipients.<br />

He kept up a lively correspondence, and visited Sherlockians whenever professional travel allowed, and among his effects I have found a Speckled Band of Boston necktie, not to mention sheaves of newsletters from groups I have never so much as heard of. Sherlockian printed matter that he from all quarters received is marked “indexed” in his neat handwriting, to indicate that it had found a place in the Toronto library’s “Bigelow” card index, which he maintained on a volunteer basis for decades.<br />

Together with my mother, Ruth, he got to know Britain’s Holmesians well during a research leave in 1977-78 from which he brought home massive notes for what became <i>Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Sources</i>. </div>

As for his reputation as “Good Old Index”, his first major Sherlockian index, covering the <i>BSJ</i> from 1946 to 1969, appeared in 1970, and he continued to index the <i>BSJ</i>, with cumulations, until 2012. Other indexes followed, knocked out on a series of manual and then electric typewriters — he never had the slightest desire to touch a computer. Bibliographies of the <a href="http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/books-video-music/specialized-collections/literature-genre-doyle.jsp" target="_blank">Arthur Conan Doyle Collection</a> at the Toronto library were joined by Bigelow on Holmes, a cumulation of that massive card index created by S. Tupper Bigelow.<br />
<br />
A chemistry graduate of Mount Allison University, Don Redmond went on to study library science at McGill University and the University of Illinois, and worked in library administration in Nova Scotia, Ceylon, Turkey and Kansas (where we both caught the Sherlockian bug) before becoming chief librarian of Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, 1966-77. Railways, Meccano, and church administration and history were among his enthusiasms in addition to Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

His Sherlockian involvement continued after retirement, with a particular highlight being the summer “workshops” he led at Queen’s University in 1980 and 1981, which brought costumed Sherlockians to Kingston to mingle with fascinated Queen’s alumni. It would be safe to say that (although he took bibliographical and historical studies very seriously) it provided a field in which he could relax his customary dignity a little, enjoying himself and bringing enjoyment to others.<br />

His long Sherlockian life produced a house full of books, papers, and memorabilia, some of which have come to me, while others have been deposited in the Toronto and University of Minnesota libraries or been distributed to a new generation across the Sherlockian world. A few key items, including his Irregular Shilling, will go to the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/archive" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Archives</a> at Harvard University.</div>

We were recently at a Sherlockian society meeting and we met a number of our listeners, which we always love doing. While one might think that we make the show just for our own amusement — <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/episodes" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a> has been called a cross between <i>Fresh Air</i> and <i>Car Talk</i> for Sherlockians — we do this because of our love of all things Holmesian and to help entertain and educate anyone interested in the world's first unofficial consulting detective.<br />

In our conversations, it became clear that not everyone is aware of or understands all of the listening options available to them. <span style="font-weight: normal;">One of our listeners told us that he wished he had more time to sit in front of his computer to listen to us. We told him that he didn't have to do that; he could download our episodes to his smartphone and take it on the go with him - on walks, at the gym, on his commute, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-weight: normal;">Smartphone use has grown exponentially since we first began broadcasting in 2007. In fact, that was the year that the iPhone launched, and with it, the app marketplace that has given rise to everything from Angry Birds to apps that can control your hotel TV with your phone. So it should be no surprise that I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is mobile app-enabled as well.</span><br />

Any of the above web-based apps are also available as mobile apps. Simply click on the links above from your mobile device and you should be taken to the appropriate app store. You can then download the app and set it up to subscribe to our shows via your phone, allowing you to listen when you're not at your computer. Some cars will allow you to pair your phone via Bluetooth; others have USB ports that you can use to connect as well. Both options give you the potential to listen to our show via your car's audio system.<br />

<i><a href="http://amzn.to/1tKaL9S" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Private Diaries of Dr. Watson</a></i> is authored by Magda Jozsa and contains 13 new cases for Holmes and Watson. The stories are billed as ones Holmes deemed too personal or were too risqué to be published at the time. <br />
<br />
The stories are nicely crafted, although slightly predictable. The author is clearly knowledgeable and attains some success in emulating the style of the Canon. Several Holmes family members are introduced and have major roles in the stories “The Illegitimate Daughter” and “Death Amidst the Orchids”. Holmes is challenged when catching a serial killer in the story “Full Moon Killer”, where he uses Dr. Watson as bait. In “The Trial of Dr. Watson” every clue Holmes uncovers tightens the hangman’s noose.  <br />
<br />
There is a lightness in the conversations between the Master and his chronicler, especially as they elude designing spinsters. <br />
<br />
Where this book falls short is in its editing. Self-publishing is a hard task, but the number of errors and broken lines reaches a distracting level.<br />

<i><a href="http://amzn.to/1uyuH0F" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Biography and Autobiography of Sherlock Holmes: Being a one volume, two book edition of My Brother, Sherlock and Montague Notations</a></i> by Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, Don Libey (Editor). <br />

The first book is written by Sherlock Holmes's older brother, Mycroft. In it, he lays bare the underlying encoding that populates the Canon, complete with the interpretation of the signals being sent to the world-wide Irregular operatives around the world. He acknowledges that he, his brother and Dr. Watson were a successful triumvirate. Among the many revelations, we find that the red herrings that Dr. Watson uses to obscure facts included their location of their joint residence. They lived in Holmes’ Montague Street digs rather than the Baker Street address used in their stories. <br />
<br />
Holmes's own Montague Notations tell the story of his life, from childhood to advanced age. He reveals that he does not prefer Americans, and that he had had close associates other than Watson. <br />
<br />
The book enlightens us on some of the unpublished cases, and shows how far Watson obscured the details. These books were a good read.<br />

Tom Magliozzi, an Inspiration for IHOSE

Tom Magliozzi, cohost of the long-running NPR show <i>Car Talk</i>, <a href="http://www.cartalk.com/blogs/staff-blog/tom-magliozzi-1937-2014">passed away yesterday</a> at 77, from complications from Alzheimer's disease.<br />
<br />
You may be wondering why we're bothering to mention on this site, and in Tom's own words, you'd be right! (And this is the juncture where you'd hear Tom's infectious laughter). But the fact is both Tom and Ray were both Sherlock Holmes fans. If you're a regular listener, you'll recall episodes on which there were occasional mentions of Sherlock Holmes and some of the stories. <br />
<br />
For example, here's <a href="http://www.cartalk.com/content/paging-sherlock-holmes" target="_blank">an old puzzler that they wrote</a> in the style of Sherlock Holmes:<br />

RAY: I'd like to give you this Puzzler in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
There had been a terrible accident in a suburb north of London, and Inspector Lestrade had been sent to investigate. Sir Richard Ashcroft was dead, and everyone agreed that it was an accident--although some suspected it was a suicide.<br />
<br />
Sir Richard had been found on a rocky slope, his head dashed against one of the boulders and his mangled bicycle at his side. The facts seemed to speak for themselves.<br />
<br />
He had lost control of his bike and had crashed. There had been no eyewitnesses, but finally an eyewitness emerged: Nigel--Sir Richard's trusted gardener of many years.<br />
<br />
Haltingly, he told his story: "I was walking back from town up that long hill leading to Sir Richard's estate when I saw him riding toward me, sitting straight up in his seat the way he always rode. He was traveling at a high rate of speed. Suddenly, he jerked the handlebars to the left, and off the road he flew to his death."<br />
<br />
Later that day, Lestrade is discussing the points of the case with his buddy, Sherlock Holmes, over cognac and a few Arturo Fuentes cigars. Holmes says, "Bring the gardener in for questioning. He's the perpetrator."<br />

How DID Holmes know?</blockquote>

Here's another clue to their knowledge of the Canon: if you listen to <a href="http://www.wbur.org/npr/357428287/tom-magliozzi-popular-co-host-of-nprs-car-talk-dies-at-77" target="_blank">the following story</a>, around the 3-minute mark, you'll note that Tom declared, much like Sherlock Holmes, that he didn't know whether the earth went around the sun or vice versa:

And let's not forget that Tom and Ray - separated by 12 years - were a comic relief version of Sherlock and Mycroft, who themselves were separated by seven years. That means as the older brother, Tom must have been Mycroft!<br />
<br />
Much like Holmes and Watson, Tom and Ray brought us technical information that was delivered in a friendly and approachable way. More importantly, they exhibited the traits of friendship as well as family, showing that they cared about each other and had fun doing what they did. <br />

But more importantly than their friendly banter or knowledge of the Canon, Tom and Ray were the inspiration for the I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere podcast. We've often been called a cross between NPR's <i>Fresh Air</i> and <i>Car Talk</i> for Sherlockians. We couldn't be any more devastated about the death of our patron saint, Tom Magliozzi. We wish his family and friends our condolences. The world will be sadder – and quieter – for his loss.<br />
<br />
And remember, don't read Sherlock Holmes like my brother.<br />
