The type of wood mattered too; oak and ash were preferred for their mystical qualities.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Interestingly, in Bram Stoker's <i>Dracula</i>, the Count wasn't defeated with a stake through his heart. According to Mina Murray's narrative, Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris pried open the lid of the box in which Dracula lay, the one decapitating him with a Kukri and the other piercing his heart with a bowie knife: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"></span></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">But, on the instant, came the sweep and flash of Jonathan’s great knife. I shrieked as I saw it shear through the throat; whilst at the same moment Mr. Morris’s bowie knife plunged into the heart.</span></div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And while the creator of Sherlock Holmes thought the idea of vampires was fanciful, he had a direct connection to Bram Stoker. Because invariably, people found themselves in unfortunate circumstances and they needed help. Oftentimes, the sentiment was “<i>I come to you as a last resource</i>,” as Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope explained.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">How appropriate was her surname? By the end of the story, Holmes located the document, saving the career of the cabinet secretary and restoring hope in his wife.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Most cases begin with a severe sense of hopelessness or pessimism, Clients arrive, convinced that there is only one man in all of England who can help, as they dolefully present their woeful problems. And yet, the Sherlock Holmes stories are filled with hope and optimism.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Bruce-Partington Plans," for example, there is more at stake than the missing plans of a submarine. Violet Westbury, fiancée of the dead suspect Arthur Cadogan West, implore Sherlock Holmes, </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Oh, Mr. Holmes, if you could only, only save his honour! It was so much to him.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in clearing up the mystery, Holmes provides comfort for those involved, as he does in so many other cases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Finding the treasure (although losing it in the Thames) in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, he brings closure for Mary Morstan and a marital prospect for Dr. Watson. Holmes is able to vanquish the family curse in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, leaving the young baronet to make a life for himself.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here are just a handful of examples of optimism: Henry Baker's hat and goose are restored and James Ryder is given a second chance [BLUE]; a terrible secret is exposed and a young family reconnected [YELL]; the shame and fear of a son's illness are wiped away with an alternative diagnosis [BLAN]; a problem child is exiled and there is a chance to repair a failed marriage [PRIO]; we could even make the case that an inherited medical practice following a murder means rosier times ahead for the physician [RESI].</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Was Sherlock Holmes a pessimist or an optimist? Some might call him a realist. But, capitalizing on the misfortunes of others, maybe he was more of an opportunist. I look at them, and the only thought which comes to me is a feeling of their isolation and of the impunity with which crime may be committed there.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Consider how this might affect how he inherently trusts other people. In his earliest cases—from his university days—he discovered that those closest to us might betray our trust.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The <i>Gloria Scott</i>," Trevor Senior is taken gross advantage of by Hudson, one of his former shipmates, which ultimately leads to Trevor's stress-induced death. And in "The Musgrave Ritual," Brunton, the long-time butler of Hurlstone, betrayed his employer's trust to go treasure-hunting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So, years later, when Holmes was speaking to Watson in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, noting “Women are never to be entirely trusted,—not the best of them,” we shouldn't be terribly surprised. The award will be judged on the mentor’s commitment to bringing aspiring Sherlockians into the cause and encouraging them to find ways to keep green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. While those activities could be in the traditional realm of trifling monographs and playing The Game, we would also recognize that the effort could take place in other media and activities. </div><div><br /></div><div>To sum up who we are looking for in a few words: Someone who is generous, welcoming, and offers encouragement.</div><p><br /></p><h3>Who Is Eligible For The Award?</h3><p>The Susan Rice Mentorship Award is open to all living Sherlockians who are generous, welcoming, and offer encouragement. They will also need to have a proven record that supports that definition. No current judges or previous winners may be considered for the award. The award is not limited to members of the Baker Street Irregulars.</p><p><br /></p><h3>How Is Someone Nominated?</h3><p>The award will be given based on nominations. The nominator should complete an essay of <b>750 words or fewer </b>that answers this question: “Who do you believe should be recognized for their work in mentoring aspiring Sherlockians and why? And it premieres in St. Paul, Minnesota in October 2024.</p><p>Hatcher is known to Sherlockians for his screenplay for <i>Mr. Holmes</i> as well as two other Sherlockian plays. Hendrickson has played Sherlock Holmes on stage numerous times before with Bob Davis as his Watson. Sherlock Holmes didn't spend much time on those topics either, aside from representing the government in a handful of cases, handling a case for the pope, having a rusty memory of the Old Testament, and one well-known reverie.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But there was one story in which Sherlock Holmes dealt with both politics <b><i>and</i></b> religion.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Naval Treaty," Holmes was engaged by Percy Phelps, who had a position at the Foreign Office, thanks to his uncle, Lord Holdhurst. On Phelps's watch, a treaty between England and Italy that defined the Triple Alliance, went missing. While it was a matter of personal and professional interest to Phelps, there were political implications if the treaty were put on the open market. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In that very same story one of the most beautiful passages in the Canon has Sherlock Holmes contemplating a rose and the creator:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion,” said he, leaning with his back against the shutters. “Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it.
