The <a href="http://ihose.co/1916film" target="_blank">discovery of the 1916 William Gillette film <i>Sherlock Holmes</i></a> in 2014 was one of the highlights of the Sherlockian calendar.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://ihose.co/ihose147" target="_blank">Russell Merritt, BSI</a> ("The Trepoff Murder"), the Cinémathèque Française, the San Francisco Silent Film Institute, and <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose79" target="_blank">Glen Miranker, BSI</a> ("The Origin of Tree Worship") did a fine job of restoring and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/sherlock-holmes-in-san-francisco.html" target="_blank">presenting the film</a> to the public.<br />
<br />
And now we (and the film) need <i>your</i> help.<br />
<br />
<b>The Library of Congress</b> of the United States has a <a href="https://www.loc.gov/programs/national-film-preservation-board/about-this-program/" target="_blank">National Film Preservation Board</a> that works to ensure the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America's film heritage. As part of that, the National Film Registry selects 25 films each year showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation.<br />

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Registry</h2>
The Library of Congress invites you to submit your recommendations for movies to be included on the 2018 National Film Registry. Public nominations play a key role when the Librarian and Film Board are considering their final selections. To be eligible for the Registry, a film must be at least 10 years old and be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."<br />
<br />
The National Film Registry historically has included only those films that were produced or co-produced by an American film company, typically for theatrical release or recognized as a film through film festivals or film awards.<br />

Mrs. Hudson. We know her as one of the stalwarts of the Baker Street Scene. Together with Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Mycroft, Inspector Lestrade, and Professor Moriarty, she's one of the most popular recurring characters in the Canon.<br />
<br />
But what do we really know about her? She only made an appearance in nine of the Sherlock Holmes stories. And other than her "stately tread," we don't have any knowledge about her physical being.<br />
<br />
Wendy Heyman-Marsaw is the author of <i>Memoirs from Mrs. Hudson's Kitchen</i>, a book that combines culinary curiosity with a new take on this independent and strong woman. Wendy is a longtime Sherlockian whose interests and career has taken her from the United States to England to Canada, and she joins us to talk about that journey and how it ultimately led to Mrs. Hudson's kitchen. And the book is comprised of columns that she wrote for <i>Canadian Holmes</i>, the publication of the Bootmakers of Toronto.<br />

If there's one thing that plagues every writer from time to time, it's writer's block. That is, the inability to create something due to a lack of ideas, or an inability to proceed.<br />
<br />
When counseling others in this regard, some writers offer the helpful advice: "Just write something!" The notion is that, through the process of typing away in a stream of consciousness, the block will lift.<br />
<br />
When one considers that Conan Doyle wrote 60 Sherlock Holmes stories (that's four novels and 56 short stories, for you folks following along at home), and that most of them had unique plots (we'll forgive him the similarities between "The Red-Headed League" and "The Three Garridebs" as one example), he did remarkably well.<br />
<br />
We're up to the 40th installment of Baker Street Elementary, and now have our greatest challenge to date. The Fay-Masons are determined to stump the band. And we nearly succumbed as well. As Neil Gibson said to Holmes in "The Problem of Thor Bridge,"<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“I have broken stronger men than you. No man ever crossed me and was the better for it.”</blockquote>
And we take great pride in responding as Sherlock Holmes did:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“So many have said so, and yet here I am,” said Holmes, smiling.</blockquote>

We'll be honest. The CBS drama series <i>Elementary</i>, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu doesn't get enough attention here on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere.<br />

It's largely because Scott and Burt haven't carved out the time to watch it. As a weekly series, there's much more to absorb than the three-episode series that the BBC produced every few years.<br />

Fortunately, James O'Leary, a regular contributor on the IHOSE site, has made it his business to watch, follow, and dissect Elementary on behalf of all Sherlockians. One of the challenges of running this biweekly comic strip (something we've been doing every other Sunday since <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/02/new-feature-baker-street-elementary.html#.W2_Maigzrb0" target="_blank">February 2017</a>) is coming up with relevant and entertaining commentary to preface each strip.<br />
<br />
We secretly think that the Baker Street Elementary crew deliberately tries to stump us, which makes us try even harder.<br />
<br />
In this case, if Watson assessed our knowledge of engineering like he assessed Sherlock Holmes's knowledge of various topics in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, it would fall somewhere between "nil" and "feeble."<br />
<br />
However, our appreciation for puns, witticisms, and wordplay would be on the "profound" level. As such, we developed a few altnernate titles for this particular strip, including:<br />

It's an approach that we hope brings more people into our fold who are new to Sherlock Holmes and are fascinated with the details within the story, or who may have some questions about what they read.<br />
