“there was gathering an atmosphere of mystery” [HOUN]

From September 2023 to April 2024, Edward G. Pettit, the Sunstein Senior Manager of Public Programs at the Rosenbach, administered and co-hosted a set of Biblioventures at the Rosenbach under the title Sherlock Mondays.

You may recall we previewed the program with Ed on Episode 277: Sherlock Mondays.

The series featured a number of co-hosts and custom cocktails for each episode, as discussion went from A Study in Scarlet to all of the stories in The Adventures and The Memoirs, as well as "The Empty House."

New Sherlock Mondays Series

Now that the program has wrapped, there is a follow-on series as Ed and even more co-hosts take on Sherlock Mondays: The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Ed and his cohosts create a “conversational annotation” about the chapters of the book, and will discuss them as they were published, serially. (Note: there will be NO spoilers for future chapters and ask viewers to refrain from spoilers, too. Some first-time readers will be joining in.)

One difference between The Hound series and the previous Sherlock Mondays episodes is that the panel will be taking questions from the audience during every episode — at the halfway point and at the conclusion of the discussion.

The discussions begin on May 6 and extend through June 24 as follows:

May 6 with cohosts Mark Jones and Paul M. Chapman from Doings of Doyle

  • Chapter 1: Mr. Sherlock Holmes
  • Chapter 2: The Curse of the Baskervilles

May 13 with Anastasia Klimchynskaya

  • Chapter 3: The Problem
  • Chapter 4: Sir Henry Baskerville

May 20 with Monica Schmidt

  • Chapter 5: Three Broken Threads
  • Chapter 6: Baskerville Hall

May 27 with Steve Doyle of The Fortnightly Dispatch

  • Chapter 7: The Stapletons of Merripit House
  • Chapter 8: First Report of Dr. Watson
  • Chapter 9: The Light upon the Moor

June 3 with Curtis Armstrong

  • Chapter 10: Extract from the Diary of Dr. Watson
  • Chapter 11: The Man on the Tor

June 10 with Scott Monty of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere

  • Chapter 12: Death on the Moor
  • Chapter 13: Fixing the Nets
  • Chapter 14: The Hound of the Baskervilles

June 17 with Mary Alcaro

  • Chapter 14 (con): The Hound of the Baskervilles
  • Chapter 15: A Retrospectionpdf Hound Strand Apr 1902

June 24 with Max Magee

  • The Legacy of the Hound

Another difference is that this is a subscription-based program. Members of the Rosenbach receive a discount and the program is available for the general public to subscribe to as well. Subscribers will be able to watch live and will have access to the archived shows for 30 days following the end of the show.

See the full details, along with PDFs of the chapters and subscription information at the Rosenbach's Sherlock Mondays: The Hound of the Baskervilles site

It looks to be a good deal of fun and is a wonderful model for the likes of the Rosenbach to follow. Be sure to check out there other Biblioventures, as we discussed with Ed in his episode.

And remember: "As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor."
