As you may have seen in the Twitter stream (the section on the right titled "Holmes Was a Very Busy Man"), the coveted Baker Street Irregulars investitures were awarded tonight at the BSI Dinner. Mike Whelan states that it's his favorite part of the dinner - and I can certainly believe him. Much joy was given, much joy was received.
While the dinner is about much more than the investitures, it's clearly the thing on everyone's mind at the dinner. Having been someone who attended a number of dinners before I was called up to the podium, I can honestly say that the old Oscars cliche "it's an honor just to be nominated" does in fact ring true. I hope that this year's attendees feel the same.
In the order they were announced, here are the latest Baker Street Irregulars:
- Betsy Rosenblatt, "Lucy Ferrier"
- Dana Richards, "The Priory School"
- David Morrill, "Count von Kramm"
- Barbara Roisman Cooper, "Mary Maberley"
- Randall Stock, "South African Securities"
- John Genova, "Harry Pinner"
- Guy Marriott, "The Hotel du Louvre"
- Sherry Rose Bond
I'm particularly pleased because the new class skewed significantly younger. I can point to John, Randall and Betsy as 30-somethings who are now part of this august organization - a sign that we're beginning to set the stage for the next generation, but we've still got a ways to go. Congratulations to one and all!
Fair warning to the new BSIs: I'll be hunting you down to ensure you subscribe to The Baker Street Journal. And to my dear readers: you subscribe to the BSJ, don't you?

Congratulations to the new Investees. It is a very good group, again prompting many to ask, "hey isn't s/he already invested?"
On the subscription to BSJournal, I think it should be mandatory for all Sherlockians, especially invested Irregulars, not only so all can share the wonderful scholarship therein, but also to support its existence and continuation.

I've been subscribing since you were wearing short pants.
;)
Of course at the time I was wearing short pants too and it was my parents' subscription, but that's beside the point. The point is, I'm happily subscribed up.

Actually, this year's class is very good - I believe you all subscribe, Betsy.
Bob, that's the spirit! The Journal is the leading publication of the Sherlockian world and more people need to subscribe. There's quite a history there, but it remains the lamplight of current Sherlockian scholarship.
More information is available at www.bakerstreetjournal.com.
Er, may I suggest that The Baker Street Journal is ONE OF the leading publications of the Sherlockian world?
The Pall Mall Gazette, BSI
(Editor, The Sherlock Holmes Journal)
Gosh. A fight?
I'm a bit of a single-stick expert, as you know...
"The Journal is the leading publication of the Sherlockian world and more people need to subscribe."
Sez who??? :-/
I agree with The Pall Mall Gazette.
There's a lot of great scholarship out there, and it's not all in the BSJ.
As for it being "mandatory for all Sherlockians," (and, I am a subscriber) I'll reply with a quote from House of Cards (said as only he could say it, by the late, great Ian Richardson):
"You might think that...I couldn't possibly comment."
Sure, the BSJ is one of a number of high-quality Sherlockian publications. But as the oldest and most frequent, I think that qualifies it as being the leading publication.
Every brand needs to be bold about its claim; I think the BSJ can lay claim the leading publication. It doesn't mean I think any less of the others, which are also very much worth your while.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE BLOG AND I HEAR OF SHERLOCK AND WHERE IS SCOTT MONTY ?? ENOUGH HIATUS !!
It was with great pleasure that I learned of Barbara Cooper's investiture.
Barbara was teaching junior high English Lit when she caught one of the first notices of the establishment of The Non-Canonical Calabashes at the end of 1970. She wrote in, asking for someone from the society to come in February give a talk about Sherlock for her class.
The resulting lecture extended over three days and we had so much fun I thought it might be a Good Thing - Barbara concurring - that an annual competition for pastiches and parodies be started with awards of money and prizes.
The competition continued with her classes for 10 years and netted some excellent, imaginative examples of serious imitations and hilarious send-ups by 9th graders, such as "The Lip with the Twisted Man".
This, by the way, is what started my career speaking for the Master at in colleges and universities, including with a recent biennial series for, I think it's called, MESA. Whoops, no, I mean MENZA. Er - I mean MENSA.
Yeah, that looks right.
So, congrats to Barbara Cooper, BSI.

PS Scott. I love the new pic of you as PeeWee Herman. It reminds me of when, as an in-joke giggle, Bill Rabe used to substitute a picture of Francis Cardinal Spellman to illustrate the bio of Julian Wolff in his "Sherlockian Who's Who and What's What" many long years ago.
Glad to see the spirit of Irregular fun continues!

'pologies for failing to mention my great joy in seeing Sherry Rose Bond get the Two-Shilling nod.
She and Scott have been tremendously wonderful in keeping green the memory of the Master within the BSI and for the BSJ.
Glad to see you so honored, Sherry!
