Philip Purser-Hallard, that's who. </p><p>I picked up <i><a href="https://amzn.to/44djHsp" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: The Spider's Web</a></i> because I'd read and enjoyed some of Purser-Hallard's writings on <i>Doctor Who</i>. I was pleasantly surprised to find an authentic-feeling novel with quite the deductions. </p><p>Then a body is found at the Moncrieff house during a ball, and in wanders the cast of <i><b><a href="https://amzn.to/3KO7vr6" target="_blank">The Importance of Being Earnest</a></b></i>. It's all the more complicated when the dead man is claimed to be Bunbury. The case that unfolds is one based on gossip and blackmail, as suits the characters. </p><p>I suspect many of you will already know whether you want to read this at this point, whether or not I continue to say that the book is entertaining, with a deft balance between Wilde's facetiousness and Doyle's adventure. If you enjoy both of these authors, you'll definitely want to see Holmes meet Lady Bracknell. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://amzn.to/3P0EXNv" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="2410" data-original-width="1548" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC6Y-zntHExQIPblOcNJSw0PszWKnOdNvPyqTb-VHOD7VMQacZa0feeBW5HkcWBt5QgG5Xe1bNKqYyTH3frR3IArmAM1vVum5VHzBD_CUgyt1r2qyZpIu3BzgqegV-cAH6LQ2XAcdPmqmzqqfqC37ZryxRezBTC-_vR3tbNTATEdcei7db7qXnmlrQEjNo/s320/Spider's%20Web.jpg" width="206" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>Thankfully, an author's note lists all the various characters and their Wildean sources, as those from <i><a href="https://amzn.to/45zZ4aF" target="_blank">An Ideal Husband</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/44hXrxm" target="_blank">A Woman of No Importance</a>, </i>and <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3qDxtGS" target="_blank">Lady Windermere's Fan</a></i> also appear. </p><p><br /></p><p>The connection between Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle is worth a mention here: both <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/08/langham-hotel-incorrectly-claims-to-be.html" target="_blank">attended a dinner at the Langham Hotel</a> with <b>J.M. Stoddart</b>, editor of <i>Lippincott's Monthly</i>, on 30 August 1889. It marked the first meeting between Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde and eventually resulted in <i>The Sign of Four</i> and <i>The Picture of Dorian Gray</i>, both initially published in <i>Lippincott's</i>.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">The Adventures Continue</h3><p>After this book, Purser-Hallard wrote <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3spmOzY" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: Masters of Lies</a></i>, a wonderfully twisty double-cross on the reader. Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Mycroft Holmes investigate the suicide of a supposed spy, caught up with various document forgeries. It came out from Titan in May 2022. Both books are recommended. </p><p><i><a href="https://amzn.to/3P0EXNv" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: The Spider's Web</a> </i>by Philip Purser-Hallard, published by Titan Books, October 2020, is available in paperback and Kindle format <a href="https://amzn.to/3P0EXNv" target="_blank">on Amazon</a>.</p><p><br /></p>

Now, these are a really very fine series of portraits.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">While Sir Henry professes not to know much about art, he has studied up on his ancestors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I don’t pretend to know much about these things, and I’d be a better judge of a horse or a steer than of a picture. That’s a Kneller, I’ll swear, that lady in the blue silk over yonder, and the stout gentleman with the wig ought to be a Reynolds. They are all family portraits, I presume?”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Every one.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />“Do you know the names?”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />“Barrymore has been coaching me in them, and I think I can say my lessons fairly well.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The names of the artists indicate that the Baskerville family must have been particularly wealthy. Kneller was <b>Sir Godfrey Kneller, Baronet</b> (1646–1723), who was the leading Baroque portraitist in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Kneller did portraits of many British admirals, and it is tempting to think he may have been the artist behind the painting of “Rear-Admiral Baskerville, who served under Rodney in the West Indies.” However, Admiral George Brydges Rodney didn't take command in the West Indies until the mid-18th century.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Reynolds was <b>Sir Joshua Reynolds</b> (1723–1792), one of the major European painters of the 18th century known particularly for his portraits. He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. With the Baskervilles, he may have had quite a bit to work with.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">That's a lot for Sir Henry, who spent most of his time in the States and Canada, to take in. But he must have been a diligent student, as he knew this would be his life's work. </div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; The man who was out and about, actively pursuing his profession in the street, on trains, and at various locations other than an office or home would have a difficult time using a quill pen or fountain pen on the go.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">During Sherlock Holmes's time, it would have been rare to find someone in the field with a pen. Indeed, the first patent for a ball-point pen was issued in 1888.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The alternative was the pencil. Highly portable, never in need of a refill and easily sharpened with a knife, razor or sharpening device. In <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, when Jefferson Hope told his story, we were alerted to the presence of a pencil:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When he finished we sat for some minutes in a stillness which was only broken by the scratching of Lestrade’s pencil as he gave the finishing touches to his shorthand account.</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Even at home in Baker Street, Watson himself tells us he whipped out a pencil to craft his definitive list of Sherlock Holmes's limits in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Holmes used a pencil to avail himself of clues to criminals in "The Reigate Squires" and "The Three Students."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And of course, in "The Copper Beeches" came his famous complaint:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"As to my own little practice, it seems to be degenerating into an agency for recovering lost lead pencils and giving advice to young ladies from boarding-schools. Ben Abramson, BSI ("The Beryl Coronet") was a bookseller and the first publisher of <i>The Baker Street Journal</i>. And he sat for an interview on the radio in 1954.</p><p>We share Ben's background, his early days as a bookseller, his move from Chicago to New York City, his association with some of the Sherlockian greats such as Vincent Starrett, Edgar W. Smith, and Peter Blau, and trace the rise and tragic fall of the <i>BSJ</i> and of Ben himself. </p><p>The winner of the previous episode's <b>Canonical Couplet</b> is revealed and we share yet another couplet for your identification. It won one Tony for Best Scenic Design (Oliver Smith).</p><p>It was based on three Sherlock Holmes Stories: "A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Final Problem," and "The Empty House," and was set in 1897, amid Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.</p><p>Sadly, this week we learned that both Jerome Coopersmith and Inga Swenson passed away just one week apart.</p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Jerome Coopersmith (1925–2023)</h2><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerome_Coopersmith" target="_blank">Jerome Coopersmith</a> passed away on July 21 at the age of 97 in Rochester, NY. He was a prolific and award-winning writer, having penned some more then 100 projects, including 30 episodes of <i>Hawaii Five-O</i>, and a number of other shows including <i>The Streets of San Francisco</i>, <i>The Night Before Christmas</i>, and <i>The Gabby Hayes Show</i>.</p><p>But to Sherlockians, he'll be best remembered for <i>Baker Street</i>, which was only his second theatrical work. It was produced on Broadway by Alexander H. Cohen, directed by Harold Prince, and appeared at the </p><p>Coopersmith was a member of the Dramatists Guild, Mystery Writers of America, and a past officer of the Writers Guild of America, East.<br /><br />He was also a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army, 94th Infantry Division from 1943-1945. She was nominated twice for a Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical — once for <i>Baker Street</i>, as noted above, and once for <i>110 in the Shade</i>.</p><p>She made her stage debut in 1949 in <i>Peg O' My Heart</i> at the Berkshire Playhouse in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She had significant experience on stage before <i>Baker Street</i>, having made her Broadway debut in 1956, and continued her stage presence for many years before retiring in 1998.</p><p>Swenson got her training at the drama department of Northwestern and was a lyric soprano, which served her well in the first half of her career. But she was probably most widely known to television audiences for her role as Gretchen Kraus in the sitcom <i>Benson</i>, which ran on ABC Television from 1979–1986.</p><p>But her theater career is her most impressive; we can't even begin to do it justice here. Smith, editor of <i><a href="https://ihose.co/BSJ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, Esther Longfellow wrote about "The Distaff Side of Baker Street":</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Dr. Watson would have us think Mr. Sherlock Holmes was indifferent to the charms of women, and that he had never been married. In support of his contention he declares, "he never spoke of the softer emotions, save with a give and a sneer." It would never occur to the unsubtle Watson that those trenchant words and that scoffing manner might hide a wounded, humiliated heart.
