Review: Mr Doyle's Class Presents A Study in Scarlet

The goal is to introduce the novel, originally written in Portsmouth, to readers of all ages. </p><p>A group of present-day schoolchildren are learning about <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. Under Mr. Doyle's direction, they're staging it as a play. Through the magic of imagination, the kids meet the originals, with the incorporation of the classic train car image from "Silver Blaze" in which Sherlock Holmes, in deerstalker and caped coat, explains to Dr. John Watson. </p><p>The comic format is used gracefully. The book opens with the modern-dressed kids peering around a Victorian street as snatches of dialogue float by. This illustrates the clash of cultures and times while still putting the reader in the center of the action. The current characters are drawn against classic settings, the blend making the story feel fresh. </p><p>The colors are all shades of a soft red. Although monochrome, the variety of tones adds depth to the art. The teacher is used to clarify some artistic choices. </p><p>The setting, on the stage, allows for focus on the most famous or most exciting moments, while stepping back, as necessary, to set context. For example, Sherlock Holmes is played by Scarlet Achary. Another student complains that Sherlock Holmes should be a boy, only to be told, "This is a play... Anyone can be anything they want." In a story about imagination, that's a welcome piece of advice. </p><p>The Utah section is abbreviated, accompanied by original illustrations, and summed up with the children concluding that anyone who doesn't listen to a woman's wishes is a creep. That's a nice way to highlight the still-relevant messages from this long-ago tale of revenge. </p><p>My only complaint is that the lettering is awfully small. The stories evoke city life.</div><div><br /></div><div>And yet, we find a few instances of farm life that creeps into the tales from time to time.</div><div><br /></div><div>Consider the very first time the public met Holmes in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>: we're taken to a place very different from London: the Great Alkalai plain and eventually to Utah, where John Ferrier sets up as...a farmer. He eventually became "the richest of the farmers," making his daughter Lucy an attractive object for many a suitor.</div><div><br /></div><div>Next, we find Jonathan Small recounting his tale in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, expressing how different he was from his family:</div><blockquote><div>"They were all steady, chapel-going folk, small farmers, well known and respected over the country-side, while I was always a bit of a rover."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>It isn't until we reach stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes that we encounter farmers again. In "The Dancing Men," we discover that Norfolk farmers are something of a Victorian Airbnb: "And the farmers take in lodgers."  </div><div><br /></div><div>And then there are the few "moor farmers" who rear sheep and cattle in "The Priory School," and "two moorland farmers" in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyone who's familiar with farming — at least the agricultural type — has heard of bushels and pecks as a form of volumetric measurement. However, we don't seem to encounter a single instance of those in the Canon, even from young Francis Prosper, the greengrocer in "The Beryl Coronet."</div><div><br /></div><div>The Baker Street Irregulars do have a peck, though: Andrew J. Peck ("Inspector Baynes, Surrey Constabulary"), who made a very different measurement in his scholarship: a chronology of the 60 stories, published together with Les Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"), titled <i><a href="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM365052&R=365052" target="_blank">"The Date Being—?" What a rag-bag of singular happenings! But surely the most valuable hunting-ground that ever was given to a student of the unusual!</span><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">”</span></blockquote></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">In "The Three Garridebs," Holmes recommended that John Garrideb use such a resource for finding his quarry:</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><div></div><blockquote><div>“I should have thought, sir, that your obvious way was to advertise in the agony columns of the papers.”</div><div>“I have done that, Mr. Holmes. No replies.”</div></blockquote></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Of course, Holmes scanned the columns daily, so if something so unusual were to appear, he would have certainly seen it and added it to his clippings.</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Nor was Holmes averse to personal communication to achieve his goals. (The ACD Collection officially opened late in 1971, and the Bootmakers became a thing a few months later.) <br /><br /> The Bootmakers will co-sponsor the Jubilee event along with the <a href="http://acdfriends.org" target="_blank">Friends of the ACD Collection</a>, a group that raises money and awareness as a unit of the Toronto Public Library Foundation. <br /><br /><br /><br /> The Friends were in the spotlight a few months ago, when (for the second year in a row) their flagship event, the <b>Cameron Hollyer Memorial Lecture</b>, took place online because of public health restrictions. The speaker was playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, who has put Sherlock Holmes on the stage more than once, was invested in the Baker Street Irregulars in 2018 as "The Five Orange Pips," and incidentally gave <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2017/06/the-2016-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">another major lecture</a>, this one for the BSI itself, in New York in January 2016. <br /><br /><br /><br /> The Friends event has been a fixture for more than twenty years now, but this year I noticed that not a great deal was said on the Zoom presentation about Cameron Hollyer himself, whose name it honors. He was also a Sherlockian scholar of note, a friend to just about everyone who crossed his path, and such a representative of Sherlock Holmes that when Colorado State University decided to award Mr. Holmes an honorary degree, Cameron was invited to show up (in deerstalker and Inverness) to accept it on his behalf. <br /><br /> Said one tribute in <i><a href="https://www.torontobootmakers.com/canadian-holmes/" target="_blank">Canadian Holmes</a></i>, the magazine of the Bootmakers of Toronto, in 1991: </div><blockquote><div>"Though he has never been our president — for it seems generally acknowledged that his talents lie elsewhere than in administrative efficiency — he has always been our presiding genius."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>His many contributions were traced by several writers in that issue of <i>Canadian Holmes</i> on the occasion of his retirement, as well as in his own reminiscence, "The Curator's Egg," an informal history of the Toronto collection. </div><div><br /></div><div>Born in 1926, he joined the staff of the Toronto library as a young man, and in 1969 was involved in the inspired decision to form an Arthur Conan Doyle collection, as well as the 1971 <b>Weekend with Sherlock Holmes</b> that launched it. </div><div><br /></div><div>He was subsequently not only an influential Bootmaker but a respected figure across the Sherlockian world, known for his gentle humour, his kindness, his way with words, and his vast knowledge. <br /><br /> When I had the opportunity to give the Cameron Hollyer Memorial Lecture at the Toronto library in 2005, I said a few words about the man whose name it bears:</div><blockquote><div>"It is not easy, for me at least, to separate the atmosphere of the Arthur Conan Doyle Room here from the image of Cameron Hollyer, tall, stooped and tobacco-stained, ready with information and anecdote and literary allusion. He once told a story of a visitor, not exactly one of the initiates, who wandered into the ACD Room, spotted Cameron and asked in something like awe, 'Are you Arthur Conan Doyle?' Cameron, who did not like to say no to anybody, decided to temporize. 'What does it say on the door?' he asked, and the visitor nodded in satisfaction — and, fortunately, wandered out again. <br /><br /> "Cameron did not look like the broad and beefy Conan Doyle, or share his booming voice and sporting tastes, and it is something of a wonder that Cameron ended up specializing in the life and work of a man so unlike him. Watson together to share a suite of rooms in Baker Street.</div><div><br /></div><div>Watson recognized that he was outspending his military pension in the opening scenes of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>:</div><blockquote><div>“There I stayed for some time at a private hotel in the Strand, leading a comfortless, meaningless existence, and spending such money as I had, considerably more freely than I ought. So alarming did the state of my finances become, that I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country, or that I must make a complete alteration in my style of living. Choosing the latter alternative, I began by making up my mind to leave the hotel, and to take up my quarters in some less pretentious and less expensive domicile.”</div></blockquote><div>And upon bumping into his old colleague Stamford, uttered these immortal words:</div><blockquote><div>“Looking for lodgings,” I answered. “Trying to solve the problem as to whether it is possible to get comfortable rooms at a reasonable price.”</div></blockquote><div>It seems that it was not a unique sentiment, however. Stamford conveyed the phrase</div><div><blockquote><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 1em;">“[Y]ou are the second man to-day that has used that expression to me.”</span></blockquote></div><div>The first, of course, was Sherlock Holmes.</div><div><br /></div><div>But it leads us to wonder: would Watson have lived with Holmes—or put up with him, rather—had the two not been tied together by way of economic necessity?</div><div><br /></div><div>When Stamford introduced the two, Holmes only outlined three <span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">“</span>shortcomings<span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">” to Watson: smoking, chemical experiments, and stretches of taciturn behavior. And violin-playing, if that can be considered a shortcoming. That's not much to object to.</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Over time, Watson would discover that Holmes had a drug habit, stayed up all hours, associated with dangerous criminals, was the victim of assaults, arson, and attempted murder, and had an outsized ego.</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Had Holmes been more forthright with Watson about his </span><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">“shortcomings,</span><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">” perhaps even Watson's tight finances wouldn't have caused him to agree to a cohabitation agreement.</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">We have a difficult time seeing these two becoming fast friends outside of that initial incentive.</span></div><div><br /></div><div>And Baker Street Elementary is where the boys dream of a brighter future...</div><div><br /></div><div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; From this somewhat unlikely venue, and specifically from RUSI researcher Andrew Glazzard, comes a new book rich with insights into what makes the Sherlock Holmes stories what they are. <br /><br /><br /> I have been reading about the Sherlockian Canon for decades, and rarely have I learned as much from one book as I did from this 250-page work, <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3inQYvh" target="_blank">The Case of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, published by the Edinburgh University Press (hardback 2018, paperback 2020).</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://amzn.to/3inQYvh" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="266" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhLgzQD4aVHHy_gLryblWf0tt6rWHeBP8gEsbscE1oAUNMlVru8hO-jYh8CW2YEmkB8r889G1dVGgaNZFXhFb-HxavxmZ90-b1R2MeqAsOPErxkeNGB05ZpjIriEoB8-y5LqK032nWQd-1r2LaozBxrEAYg7Tjr8uO_c9cKvnHU6bf6JGxtw-7Br9V38w=w266-h400" width="266" /></a></div><br /> <br /> It speaks strongly to Sherlockians even though Glazzard is not a Sherlockian himself (he certainly spends no time on the so-called canonical Game) but an academic, whose previous book was about Joseph Conrad. There have been other academic books about the creator of the great detective, of course, such as <i><a href="https://amzn.to/34ZdlEp" target="_blank">The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Detecting Social Order</a></i> (1995) by Rosemary Jann and <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37COHdw" target="_blank">Arthur Conan Doyle and the Meaning of Masculinity</a></i> (2000) by Diana Barsham, but this one is strikingly readable and moves along briskly. <br /><br /><br /> An example of Glazzard's insights comes in a chapter titled "The Guardians of Securities", where he points out a curious change in emphasis between the very early Sherlock Holmes stories and the ones written after 1892.<br /><br />From <i>The Sign of Four</i> to "The Beryl Coronet," the early stories have largely been about physical treasure: gold bullion, counterfeit half-crowns, a massive blue jewel. But the later stories, from "The Stock-Broker's Clerk" to "Black Peter", begin to emphasize paper wealth such as stocks and bonds, or at least to include passing references (Sir Charles Baskerville got rich on South African investments, for example).<br /><br /> The details are often surprisingly current. Hall Pycroft in "The Stock-Broker's Clerk" was out of work because of developments in Venezuela; Glazzard the RUSI researcher points out that Venezuela did, in reality, suffer a revolution and a civil war starting in 1889, something Arthur Conan Doyle must have noticed in the newspapers that he loved to read. <br /><br />He also probably started reading the stock quotations; Glazzard credits Conan Doyle biographer Andrew Lycett with pointing out that after the success of the first dozen stories from <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, Conan Doyle was suddenly comparatively wealthy and would naturally have started to take an interest in investment opportunities, as Watson did at the time of "The Dancing Men."<br /><br /> Something like 30 of the 60 canonical stories get the spotlight in chapters headed "Finance", "Class", "Family," "Sex," "Race," "War," and "Secrecy." The book doubles down on the widely recognized homosexual subtext to "Wisteria Lodge," then finds a similar theme in "The Blanched Soldier" — and for good measure suggests that there is evidence of pedophilia in "The Priory School."<div><br /><br /> Glazzard looks at story after story identifying themes that interested Doyle and, even more, themes that were already preoccupying his readers in the <i>Strand </i>and other popular media. </div><div><br /></div><div>Divorce law and dysfunctional families, a nation crawling with foreign spies, the scandalous behaviour of the aristocracy, "the growing political power of women and industrial workers," the Canon has them all. Few of the things Glazzard points out are particularly obscure; anyone who has read a little about Victorian history has heard of them. But like poor Watson, we see but we do not observe until somehow they are shown to be relevant. <br /><br /> Several decades after the RUSI building opened in 1895, <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/SK4kvMxtFdLo1WmD6" target="_blank">an equestrian statue was erected</a> in the middle of the road just outside the front door, honoring World War I commander Douglas Haig. Haig's reputation among historians is now dubious, but the living man made such an impression on Arthur Conan Doyle during the Great War that his autobiography, <i>Memories and Adventures</i>, includes an embarrassingly effusive fanboy tribute. </div><div><br /></div><div>Glazzard quotes ACD's words about Haig in a late chapter of his book titled "That Secret History of a Nation," a phrase borrowed from "The Bruce-Partington Plans." He places several canonical stories in the context of the spy fiction that fascinated the British public in the late 19th and early 20th century, in anticipation of the Great War that was to come. <br /><br /><br /> One of his insights explains a lot about the Canon's espionage stories, as illustrated by the names given to three top-level spies: Hugo Oberstein, Louis LaRothière, and Eduardo Lucas — a German, a Frenchman, and a Spaniard. They represent "geopolitical reality" as interpreted by Conan Doyle, the author says, explaining a major shift within barely a decade: "Where France had been the presumed enemy in 'The Naval Treaty', 'The Second Stain' was first published in The Strand in December 1904, shortly after the Entente Cordiale was agreed between Britain and France," making Germany the popular foe.<br /> <br /><br /> This volume arrives on Sherlockian and Doylean shelves as Edinburgh University — Arthur Conan Doyle's alma mater — begins to establish itself as a centre of scholarly studies about the author and his greatest literary creation.  It's eminently worth attention from any serious Sherlockian. </div><div><br /></div><div>If I have one cavil about the book, it would be the subtitle, "Secrets and Lies in Conan Doyle's Detective Fiction." So many societies began to have virtual meetings: video calls (invariably hosted on Zoom).</p><p>Rich Krisciunas, Steve Mason, and Edith Pounden were among scores of other Sherlockians who flitted from society to society, making use of technology to allow them to go places and see people they wouldn't have otherwise seen. They are three of the founding officers of the Legion of Zoom: the newest Sherlockian society for people who attend a certain number of virtual meetings.</p><p>What is the Legion all about, how can you join, and where can you find out about more online Sherlockian group meetings? I suppose when you doctored you found yourself studying cases without thought of a fee?” </div><p> </p><div>“For my education, Holmes.” </div><p> </p><div>“Education never ends, Watson. It is a series of lessons with the greatest for the last. This is an instructive case. There is neither money nor credit in it, and yet one would wish to tidy it up. When dusk comes we should find ourselves one stage advanced in our investigation.”</div><p></p><p></p><p></p></blockquote><div></div></div><div>How fascinating that Holmes couldn't stand to allow a little conundrum like this stand without busying himself with it.
