Presumably, then, the young man had one."</div></blockquote><div><br /> It should be obvious to a Watson — even to a Lestrade — that this deduction is simply wrong. Indeed, it turns out that West never had a ticket, for the simple reason that he never was a passenger. Through the trick known nowadays in New York as <a href="https://draft.blogger.com/#">turnstile-hopping</a>, or through corruption by a friendly and negligent employee. </div><div><br /></div><div>Regardless of the Metropolitan Railway's security measures and the vigilance of its guards, there must have been many attempts every day, some of them successful, to sneak onto a platform, and thence onto a train, without buying a ticket.</div><div><br /> Is it possible that Holmes, whose usual fare included jewel thefts, murdered baronets, and vanishing steamships, remained blissfully unaware of petty crime and twopenny fraud? The man who claimed to have "an exact knowledge of London" must surely have had some knowledge of pickpocketing, prostitution, drunkenness, random violence, and the thousand little cheats by which the poorer classes got by. </div><div><br /></div><div>No doubt Watson's delicacy excised these phenomena from the records of Holmes's cases. The acute observer will notice "a little knot of roughs" and a broken window at the corner of Goodge Street in "The Blue Carbuncle," and of course the fraudulent beggar Hugh Boone in "The Man with the Twisted Lip," but it is difficult to think of many other examples. </div><div><br /></div><div>The official police had to pay attention to such matters, but Holmes was in a position to overlook them, or at least to delegate them to his ragamuffin Irregulars, and Watson clearly did not wish to bring them to his readers' attention. <br /><br /> The remarkable discrepancy between London crime (and London life) as a whole, and the more affluent and sanitized portion of it that was of interest to Sherlock Holmes, has of course often been noticed. Mostly we attribute it to class bias. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Holmes who airily commented in "The Noble Bachelor" about the quality of his incoming correspondence — "the humbler are usually the more interesting" — did not generally walk the talk: his known cases involve, if not royalty and aristocracy, at least the respectable members of the middle class. If they are financially embarrassed it is frequently because they have spent their fortunes, like Sir Robert Norberton of "Shoscombe Old Place."<br /><br /> Admittedly, Hall Pycroft of "The Stock-Broker's Clerk" has never been wealthy, but he is a self-respecting member of the clerical class, who probably read Watson's narratives in the <i>Strand </i>magazine once he had caught up on the day's stock market news. </div><div><br /></div><div>Even while employed, he might have found it expedient to join a goose club like Henry Baker, paying so many pence a week toward the year-end luxury of a Christmas dinner, and once out of a situation he quickly found it difficult to make ends meet, but he would never have fit with that knot of street-corner roughs. <br /><br /> Cadogan West, the young man who died on the Underground without even the solace of a ticket on his person, was of a similar occupational class, though more financially secure. In the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> for Autumn 2013 ("Short Sentences: Deductions from a Few Words in 'The Bruce-Partington Plans'"), I noted that his fiancée, Violet Westbury, was telling Holmes no more than the truth when she described his salary as "ample." </div><div><br /></div><div>Judging from available information about the pay scales for government clerks, West probably earned about £300 a year, or 50 percent more than Hall Pycroft's £200. In current US dollar buying power, the equivalent would be about $40,000.  <br /><br /> In other words, at the age of 27, he was earning close to the median annual income currently enjoyed in the United States, and he had it tax-free since British income tax in the 1890s did not touch middle-class earners. </div><div><br /></div><div>If West's needs were indeed "simple," as Violet Westbury also tells Holmes, he must have been well able to support himself and comfortably anticipate taking a wife. Sherlock Holmes did not have most of this information at the time of his exchange with Watson about the missing ticket, but perhaps he jumped to a conclusion from the simple knowledge that Cadogan West was a government employee.  <br /><br /> Apparent respectability, however, is no guarantee, as Britain's Financial Conduct Authority discovered in December 2014 when it was found necessary to ban a London hedge fund manager from the finance industry <a href="https://draft.blogger.com/#">after he was found to have evaded £42,000 in commuter fares</a>. <br /><br />--</div><div><br /></div>

Sherlockian society dinners have relatively little from which to choose when it comes to side dishes. We can count on peas or pea soup because "the landlady babbled of green peas at 7:30," as quoted in "The Three Students."</div><div><br /></div><div>So in Season 4 when we were recording a monthly feature on food, we did something risky. As Holmes reminds us in "The Sussex Vampire,"</div><div><blockquote>“This agency stands flat-footed upon the ground, and there it must remain.”</blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>And yet, we were led to believe<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>through creative storytelling and incredulous observers<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>that the supernatural was present:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>In <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, when Dr. Mortimer suspects the hound of being supernatural, he follows up with  “Since the tragedy, Mr. Holmes, there have come to my ears several incidents which are hard to reconcile with the settled order of Nature.”</li><li>Later, when Holmes mentions something about the devil’s work, Dr. Mortimer wonders if Holmes believes in the supernatural. Holmes answers, “The devil’s agents may be of flesh and blood, may they not?”</li><li>In "The Devil's Foot," the vicar Roundhay burst into Holmes's cottage, screaming “We are devil-ridden, Mr. Holmes! My poor parish is devil-ridden! Satan himself is loose in it! We are given over into his hands!”</li><li>And in "The Sussex Vampire," the title itself gives us to believe that there are supernatural elements afoot. Holmes, from the very outset, is skeptical of anything of the sort, reminding Watson, “The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply.”</li></ul></div><div>Not that Conan Doyle didn't have experience with stories that were other-worldly. "J. Hababuk Jephson's Statement" is a fictional version of the <i>Mary Celeste</i> incident; "Lot No. 249" is the original mummy story; "The Horror of the Heights" makes us wonder what lurks in the skies above; and "The Terror of Blue John Gap" puts our thoughts to what lurks in the earth below.</div><div><br /></div><div>His ability to create believable scenarios and build suspense through the eyes of his narrators made him a superb storyteller indeed. Perhaps we were never quite to frightened when reading the Sherlock Holmes stories because Watson, our narrator, is fairly fearless.</div><div><br /></div><div>Fortunately, most feet remain flat-footed on the ground at Baker Street Elementary. And some students remain flat on their backs...</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Technically, this has not been a lost film, but the nasty DVD dupe we’ve been stuck with does the film a cruel disservice, making it all but unwatchable.   </p><p>What the MoMA restoration reveals is a droll pre-Code feature that ranks among the most stylish Sherlocks made in the black-and-white era.  This was a major studio production, directed by one of Fox’s leading directors, William K. Howard, and filmed by the legendary cinematographer, George Barnes.</p><p>This is not a production for Sherlockian purists, but for non-purists it’s a pleasure to watch a great studio director in top form having fun with Holmes and Hollywood genres: Moriarty is on the loose, importing American gangsters and their continental allies to wreak havoc on London pubs [!] with Tommy guns, hand grenades, and speeding cars. </p><p>Holmes, not to be undone, counters with his genius for scientific investigation. Clive Brook, usually the stiffest of British matinee idols, loosens up with sardonic one-liners and elegant banter, having a fine time jumping off a balcony to fight one of Moriarty’s henchmen. </p><p>Howard and Barnes turn this into a series of visual tours-de-force. The first scene sets the tone, a court sentencing Moriarty to death in a series of silhouettes and close-ups slowly revealed behind raised veils. Moriarty then delivers a curse in a rich Scottish burr by the great silent actor Ernest Torrence. This sets the tone for a virtuoso display of powerful shadow effects, whip pans, shock cuts, flash-backs, weird angles, and complexly staged deep focus shots.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">From Gillette to Rathbone</h3><p>Of particular interest to Sherlockians is how the movie fits into the trajectory from William Gillette to Basil Rathbone. The Fox film illustrates what gets revealed when we can see fine prints: a benchmark with links to the past and future. </p><p><i>Sherlock Holmes</i> was adapted by young Bertram Millhauser, the first of several Millhauser-Holmes screenplays that starts with Gillette’s play<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>or rather with Gillette’s reinvented characters. The plot itself owes nothing to Gillette<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>it might be called a sequel but Millhauser is too unbridled. Alice Faulkner is now Holmes’s long-suffering fiancée; Moriarty has been turned into a homicidal jewel thief; and Watson has been replaced by both Billy, Holmes’ adoring apprentice, and Holmes’ Scotland Yard arch-rival turned co-conspirator [Alan Mowbray]. </p><p>Brook himself provides the clearest through-line to Gillette, the patrician Holmes par excellence. If Rathbone and his successors are high strung<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>the high E-notes on the Sherlockian violin<span style="background-color: white; color: #4d5156; font-family: Roboto, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">—</span>Brook continues, along with Wontner, on the Gillette low G, graceful and imperturbable. This is the debonair Holmes, whether in his spats and cutaway, or in his smoking jacket and Gillettian dressing gown. </p><p>And much would be recycled into the Rathbone films. The opening court scene would be re-used (to flabbier effect) in Rathbone’s 1939 <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, as would the idea of Moriarty being a cunning jewel thief. And Millhauser would steal from himself when recycling the jewel thief angle (<i>Pearl of Death</i>) and placing a gangster hideout behind the shooting gallery at an amusement park (<i>The Spider Woman</i>).</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Now for the Challenge</h3><p>So much for the good news. The difficulty is that MoMA’s restored print is currently all but inaccessible. Currently, it has only been shown for a month as a one-off in MoMA’s online film series, available to <a href="https://membership.moma.org/" target="_blank">members only</a>.   </p><p>Otherwise, The Walt Disney Company controls distribution rights, and getting them to release the film is likely to be an uphill battle. So far Disney has shown little interest in vintage Fox films, and in fact, has discharged Fox’s restoration chief of staff.  </p><p>Even Fox’s Cinema Archives series, which had been the studio’s quirky way of distributing its old movies on an expensive, on-demand line of no-frills DVD-Rs, has been put on hold.  And even if the merged company were to add the 1932 <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> to the list, there is no guarantee they would use MoMA’s sparkling print.   </p><p>So, for now, we need to wait and see what Disney plans to do. Lawrence Matthews' fine new novel <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3cjgqj6" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">One Must Tell the Bees: The Final Education of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>.</p><p></p><p>For a man who is considered immortal by most of his faithful readers, Sherlock Holmes has tasted death at least a few times. Famously his fall from the Reichenbach began this trail; Doyle famously desired to end his connection to the Baker Street sleuth, but Sir Arthur soon found that life without Sherlock was just not worth living. He never again attempted to end the life of the world's favorite sleuth.</p><p>Other authors have considered the ultimate passing of the great detective, but surprisingly not many hits come up when searching for the death of Sherlock Holmes. Many works confront the elder years of the Baker Street sleuth, but who has the temerity to write the last moments of the immortal?  </p><p>In his new novel, <i>One Must Tell the Bees: The Final Education of Sherlock Holmes</i>, author J. Lawrence Matthews gives readers a chance to perceive the scene we all know must have taken place sometime during or after the Great War—Holmes's last dated case is "His Last Bow," in which Watson assures us that Holmes is still alive though slightly rheumatic—the death of Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>First news of Matthews' novel instantly thrilled me, as early publication info purported it to be the story of a young Sherlock, brought to America and immersed in Washington City as the Civil War explodes around him. Hints pushed me further—Holmes on the trail of the assassin! Booth cornered and the game afoot! I eagerly consumed the novel, which, at 500+ pages, took a few weeks. </p><p>To give a quick encapsulation—<i>One Must Tell the Bees</i> is at once the tale of Holmes's "first" case ("The <i>Gloria Scott</i>" and Barry Levinson's <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i> notwithstanding) and the tale of his last case—respectively, the hunt for the killer of Abraham Lincoln and the search for a killer who strikes on the train Watson takes to visit his old friend in the English countryside. </p><p>Much of the novel is told in the voice of Sherlock Holmes, as he recounts the tales of his formative years and how he and his brother attained their positions and connections in the British Empire. The rest of the novel is in the voice of Watson. </p><p>Matthews creates a fabulous version of the end of the American Civil War and the hunt for Booth that will have readers turning their pages swiftly, eager to see Holmes on the trail of perhaps the most famous murderer of the 19th century. </p><p>Also included in the work is much biographical information about the nebulous early years of Holmes, and even a twist on his name and that of his hyper-productive brother, Mycroft. As the scene shifts to the second mystery and the solving of the train murder, the family tree of Moriarty is explored, as is the master plan of Holmes's greatest opponent. Fans of both the American Civil War and of the immortal sleuth will take great delight in this amazing novel.</p><p>Certainly, any novel with major intent will raise questions in readers, and my mind filled with queries as I considered Matthews' assertions about the nature of the relationship between Lincoln and Holmes, and also about a friend Sherlock makes in the War. </p><p>The Black youth who accompanies Holmes on the trail of the assassin raises questions of race in the Canon, and exactly how Doyle, if not Holmes himself, perceived color and race in his era and country. </p><p>Just as problematic for some readers may be Matthews' continued lionization of the American traitors Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, but overall the novel has a positive tone and gives the reader an amazing vista across which the action is set: the streets of London in Holmes' youth, the muddy byways of Washington City during the crisis of secession, the swamps of Virginia on the trail of Booth, and of course the peaceful English countryside of the Seven Sisters of Sussex and the local pubs and farms nearby.</p><p>Any review of this book would be remiss if it did not mention the powerful climax, which as mentioned above gives readers a chance to perceive and consider that which few writers and filmmakers have dared to envision: the final breaths of Sherlock Holmes.  </p><p>I will not spoil the plot points but will leave the clue that the story's back end is set near the end of World War I. There is no indication that the students would have had knowledge beforehand of exactly which work from the classics would be the subject of their translation.</div><div><br /></div><div>The proofs of "half a chapter of Thucydides" arrived at Soames' rooms, and were left out when Gilchrist happened to stop by. Now, he wouldn't have had to copy the entirety of the paper (nor would he have had time to do so) while Soames was out. But all he had to do was to verify which chapter the excerpt was from.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then, Gilchrist could retire to his room and study the chapter in question.</div><div><br /></div><div>But here's our question: if Soames had to review the proofs for accuracy, then perhaps he could have used them to his advantage.
