The year 2020 is upon us, and you've probably seen your fair share of 20/20 references, as humans are all too predictable to resist a tired cliche.

Since that brings to mind the "vision thing" (to quote George H.W. Bush), we're going to take a look back (thank you, hindsight) at a rather vexing error in one of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Arthur Conan Doyle began his medical career as an oculist, or a physician specializing in treating diseases of the eye. The term oculist dates to 1598, but today we're more accustomed to the term ophthalmologist, optometrist, or optician — not to be confused with an optimist. (Although to be clear, opticians are more concerned with providing corrective lenses than treating disease.)

Conan Doyle gave up his medical career to pursue writing — gradually at first, while he was waiting for patients, but then completely, as his writing career took off. And while early influences of Dr. Joseph Bell, his medical school professor, gave us the basis of Sherlock Holmes's methods, there was only one instance of Conan Doyle's medical specialty creeping into the Sherlock Holmes stories.

It wasn't until 1904 when he wrote "The Adventure of the Golden Pince Nez" that we read about an eye-related disorder and its connection to crime. In the story, the victim was found stabbed to death, holding a pair of golden pince nez in his hand. By carefully observing the eyewear, Holmes was able to make the following deductions about the perpetrator:

"[A] woman of good address, attired like a lady. She has a remarkably thick nose, with eyes which are set close upon either side of it. She has a puckered forehead, a peering expression, and probably rounded shoulders. There are indications that she has had recourse to an optician at least twice during the last few months. As her glasses are of remarkable strength and as opticians are not very numerous, there should be no difficulty in tracing her.”

Sherlock Holmes explained how he was able to determine her physical appearance:

"You will perceive, Watson, that the glasses are convex and of unusual strength. A lady whose vision has been so extremely contracted all her life is sure to have the physical characteristics of such vision, which are seen in the forehead, the eyelids, and the shoulders.” [Emphasis ours. - Ed.]

The term "convex" is something that attracted immediate attention at the time of publication. The Journal of the American Medical Association had a notice in its December 3, 1904 issue, and the New York Medical Journal and Philadelphia Medical Journal: A Weekly Review of Medicine on November 12, 1904 both took issue with the lenses being identified as convex rather than concave, as would have been appropriate for a near-sighted patient. Shortly thereafter, a letter to The Bookman's Letter Box in the January 1905 edition of The Bookman: A Magazine of Literature and Life also pointed out the error. (Ref. "A Vexing Error: Ophthalmology in 'The Golden Pince Nez'" by Richard J. Sveum, MD in The Wrong Passage, BSI Press, 2012).

While this error appears in the manuscript and in the Collier's edition, the editors corrected it to "concave" in the Strand Magazine. Later, when The Return of Sherlock Holmes was published in England by George Newnes, Ltd. and in the United States by McClure & Philips (both 1905), and The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Doubleday (1932), the correction was there as well.

It turns out hindsight really is 20/20.

And the boys at Baker Street Elementary learn a way to use hindsight to their advantage this week...

Sherlock Holmes's Dressing Gown(s)

While the most famous pieces of Sherlock Holmes's wardrobe may typically be his deerstalker cap and Inverness cape — ironically two items never mentioned in the Canon — he's still recognized (although less well known) in his dressing gown. William Gillette (above) famously played Sherlock Holmes on stage some 1,300 times from 1899 to 1930 in a heavy quilted and silken number.

But what do we know about the dressing gowns mentioned in conjunction with Holmes in the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? And how can you dress just as nattily as Holmes in the comfort of your own abode?

The Original Stories

The first time (in the order the stories were published) we glimpse Sherlock Holmes in a dressing gown is in "The Man With the Twisted Lip," in which Watson describes the scene at the St. Clairs' home:

"He took off his coat and waistcoat, put on a large blue dressing-gown, and then wandered about the room collecting pillows from his bed, and cushions from the sofa and armchairs. With these he constructed a sort of Eastern divan, upon which he perched himself cross-legged, with an ounce of shag tobacco and a box of matches laid out in front of him."

We next read of Watson discovering Holmes "lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown" in "The Blue Carbuncle," as Holmes examined Henry Baker's discarded hat. The pair were later interrupted by Peterson the commissionaire, with his amazing discovery of the precious gem in the crop of the goose he brought home to his wife.

Other times when Holmes appeared in his dressing gown were days when he was sitting idly at Baker Street, such as in "The Engineer's Thumb" ("lounging about his sitting-room in his dressing-gown, reading the agony column of The Times"), "The Beryl Coronet" ("My friend rose lazily from his armchair, and stood with his hands in the pockets of his dressing-gown, looking over my shoulder."), and "The Bruce-Partington Plans" ("He was a different man to the limp and lounging figure in the mouse-coloured dressing-gown who had prowled so restlessly only a few hours before round the fog-girt room.").

There are instances when Holmes is roused to action and, still clad in his dressing gown, wakes Watson. In "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax," "he rushed into my room. He was in his dressing-gown, but his pale, hollow-eyed face told me that his night had been a sleepless one." And in "The Resident Patient," Holmes has done everything but change into his coat: "At half-past seven next morning, in the first dim glimmer of daylight, I found him standing by my bedside in his dressing-gown." We see Holmes the quick-change artist in The Hound of the Baskervilles: "'Your hat and boots, Watson, quick! Not a moment to lose!' He rushed into his room in his dressing-gown, and was back again in a few seconds in a frock-coat."

Let's not forget the dressing gown as disguise for Holmes's mannequin in the window in two stories. First, Holmes's return in "The Empty House" led Col. Sebastian Moran to mistake the bust for his real target as "It stood on a small pedestal table with an old dressing-gown of Holmes's so draped round it that the illusion from the street was absolutely perfect." Later in the story, Holmes wore it himself: "He had thrown off the seedy frock-coat, and now he was the Holmes of old in the mouse-coloured dressing-gown which he took from his effigy."

And later in "The Mazarin Stone," in an effort to fool Count Negretto Sylvius (and evidently Dr. Watson as well),

"There was a facsimile of his old friend, dressing-gown and all, the face turned three-quarters towards the window and downwards, as though reading an invisible book, while the body was sunk deep in an armchair."

Yes, the dressing gown was almost akin the effect of a superhero changing from street clothes to appointed costume as our hero readied himself for any occasion.

The Color Theory

If you read the excerpts above, you'll note that there are three colors mentioned (and in most cases no color noted whatsoever). What are we to make of this? Some Sherlockians have assumed that Holmes owned more than one dressing gown (see "Sherlock Holmes's Dressing Gown(s)," S.F. Blake, The Baker Street Journal, Vol. 10, No. 2, April 1960, pp. 86-89 - available via the eBSJ).

But we prefer the ingenious and tidy solution developed by Christopher Morley, the founder of the Baker Street Irregulars. In his essay "Was Sherlock Holmes an American?" which first appeared in 1936, he mentioned the controversy

"such as, was Holmes's dressing gown blue, purple or mouse colored?" [Fn. "Elementary. This particular gown was blue when new. (The Twisted Lip) It had gone purple by the time of the Blue Carbuncle. During the long absence 1891-94, when Mrs. Hudson faithfully aired and sunned it in the backyard, it faded to mouse (The Empty House).

It was this deduction that led Morley to plan for the official colors of the Baker Street Irregulars. From The Standard Doyle Company by Steven Rothman, BSI, 2s. ("The Valley of Fear"), Morley wrote to Helen Hare on December 15, 1949:

"I want to sell the BSI boys the idea of adopting colors for the club: to be shewn in either a rosette for the lapel, or even in a necktie. The colors, of course, to be
Purple, Blue and Mouse
these being the three shades through which Sherlock's dressing gown passed in its fadings. A fine rich purple; a pleasing "electric blue" (like the dress Violet Hunter had to wear in Copper Beeches!); and then a furry, soft, comfortable mouselike gray. . . . "

Then came the official announcement at the 1950 BSI Dinner. And the ties (and rosettes!) are still in use today, available to investitured Baker Street Irregulars.
Get Your Own Dressing Gown

If you like the idea of lounging about in a dressing gown like Holmes, there's good news: Derek Rose, purveyor of fine nightwear, once recommended Sherlock Holmes' Dressing Gowns (link now dead). Some of these styles were worn by Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock. Others are reminiscent of Sherlocks past.
[Fair warning: these are not for the faint of budget. But they are extraordinarily beautiful and we outline them below. Click each image to enlarge.]

However, if you're prone to the reality of most budget-minded Sherlockians, there was once a way to get all three of Holmes's dressing gown colors for less than the cost of any of the Derek Rose gowns above. Admittedly, it's more of a robe than a dressing gown. If a few years ago, if you ventured to your local Costco Wholesale, you could have found plush robes in — get this — purple, blue and gray.
Happy 166th Birthday, Sherlock Holmes!

"on my...birthday" [GLOR]

Today is January 6th — and that marks the date on which we traditionally celebrate Sherlock Holmes's birthday.

We say "traditionally," because there is no definitive statement of his actual date of birth in the Canon, but beginning with Christopher Morley, the date of January 6th has become the de facto accepted date for Holmes' birthday. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.

Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: Twelfth Night. In The Sign of the Four, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.

The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...

In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his The Annotated Sherlock Holmes, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th - the date on which The Valley of Fear began - he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.

And why 166? Scholars have fixed the year of Sherlock Holmes's birth to 1854 by virtue of a line in "His Last Bow" when he was described as "a tall gaunt man of sixty."
<span style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "merriweather"; font-size: 21px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "merriweather"; font-size: 21px;">Opportunity

If you happen to be in New York City next weekend, you can participate in some of the BSI Weekend activity, when Sherlockians from around the world gather to hold various events where they connect and pay homage to the great detective.

So, by all means, share the news that today is Sherlock Holmes's birthday. But whatever you do, don't try to throw him a surprise party. It's an exercise in futility.

We hope you'll take a moment and wish Sherlock Holmes a happy birthday in your own way. If you'd like to join in here, please feel free to leave a birthday comment below.

The New Year not only brings us into the 'Twenties, but brings welcome news from the world of Sherlock Holmes as well.

Three stories from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes officially enter the public domain as of January 1, 2020: "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs," and "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client." Each was first published in 1924, and under the 95-year copyright term, the copyright expired at the end of 2019.

That means there are just six stories left under copyright protection: "The Adventure of the Three Gables," "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier," "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane," and "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman," which will enter the public domain in 2022; and "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" and "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place," which will enter the public domain in 2023.

While the copyrights on the original stories is undisputed, longtime followers of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere may recall the highly pitched legal battle over copyright of the characters from 2013 and 2014.

A Brief History of #FreeSherlock

It began in early 2013 when Leslie S. Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") sued the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd. for use of characters from the Sherlock Holmes canon. The CDE argued that the characters were not fully formed until all of the stories were completed.

This bizarre legal theory would have created a special copyright term for characters, who could remain copyrighted long after the stories in which they appear enter the public domain, as long as their owners keep tweaking them in subsequent books. Not surprisingly, the court rejected this argument, finding that

“It is a bedrock principle of copyright that once work enters the public domain it cannot be appropriated as private (intellectual) property, and even the most creative of legal theories cannot trump this tenet.”

In a special episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, we talked with intellectual property law professor Betsy Rosenblatt, BSI ("Lucy Ferrier") and Les about the implications for literary and entertainment characters:

Then in June 2014, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, with an opinion written by Judge Richard Posner, rejected the appeal by the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd., rebuking it as a "quixotic" attempt to seek "perpetual, or nearly perpetual copyright protection" of the Sherlock Holmes character.

The CDE filed an emergency stay with the Supreme Court of the United States in July and SCOTUS promptly denied it. Then in August, the 7th Circuit ordered the Conan Doyle Estate to give up its "extortion" and develop a new business model.

The saga reached its conclusion in November 2014 when SCOTUS officially rejected the dispute.

And here we are.

The stories continue to roll into public domain, and the characters remain so.

Happy New Year.

Established in 2003, the Beacon Society introduces young people to the Sherlock Holmes stories and recognizes people who are doing their part to do the same. Through grants, awards, essay contests and more, the group has many resources and opportunities for all who wish to get involved.

In this episode, we're joined by Headlight Denny Dobry, BSI ("A Single Large Airy Sitting Room") and Communications Chair Steve Mason, who tell us about the priorities of the group and what you can expect ahead.
Baker Street Elementary – This Poisonous Atmosphere

We've come across a few poisons in the Sherlock Holmes stories. From South American alkaloids to prussic acid to charcoal and more, there have been a handful of poisons that have caused irreparable damage or death to the victims.

But in most of these instances, there was one thing that we lacked: an antidote.

Think about that for a moment: in each case where poison was concerned, there was no antidote for a lethal dose. The victims all expired.

In the occasional instance of victims receiving a non-lethal dose, they either had the poison removed in some fashion (SUSS) or removed themselves from the environment before more damage could be done (DEVI).

However, Watson's medical bag wasn't completely devoid of solving harrowing cases. He of course carried his universal specific everywhere. That's right; brandy.

[Incidentally, if you'd like to get a mug or a t-shirt honoring Watson's medical bag, check out our store.]

Meanwhile, here's an interesting trivia question. You might want to try this out at your next gathering:

There is only one antidote mentioned in the Canon. What is it and where did it appear? (Answer below.)

The poisonous atmosphere at Baker Street Elementary may provide some light on this kind of medicine...
*Answer to the trivia question: the only antidote mentioned in the Canon is work.

When Holmes returned from his hiatus in "The Adventure of the Empty House" and learned of Watson's "own sad bereavement," he said,

"Work is the best antidote to sorrow, my dear Watson."

The Second Morning After Christmas

Today traditionally marks the date on which "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" took place. The seventh in the series of stories that make up The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, "The Blue Carbucnle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.

Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:

"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."

It has become a tradition at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere to acknowledge December 27th with a repeat feature. Just as the Wall Street Journal annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "In Hoc Anno Domini," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.

In the case of this post (titled "The Second Morning After Christmas" [BLUE] in many but not all of the previous cases) which has been used in 2006, 2008, 2009 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 (2014 must have been an off year for us) we find that we have a piece that continues to please, so we'll continue the tradition.

If this is new to you, please feel free to share and use this at your own Sherlockian society holiday meetings. The only thing we ask is that you attribute the poem to its rightful author. If you'd like to listen to it, we also produced a special episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere in December 2007 in which we read the verse:
We're fans of GIFs, whether you pronounce them like the 'g' in giraffe or the correct way.

So much of Internet culture has grown around GIFs as memes, as they're part of the user design for Twitter, Facebook, and many other platforms. And as Sherlock Holmes invariably finds his way into popular culture, it's only natural that Sherlock Holmes should be part of GIF culture as well.

That brings us to The Bloo Sparkly (click for the fullsize image), a retelling of "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" with stick figures as a GIF, which you can also see above. This illustration was originally presented by whorl on the now-defunct site Holmesian.net and is a perennial favorite here.

If you're reading this on a feed reader or via email, please click here to advance to the website to see the animation. The slides advance automatically, so if you need to start over, just hit F5 or refresh your browser to start over.
We hope that your holiday is an enjoyable one. Expect to see us back here again in two days (i.e. "the second morning after Christmas" [BLUE]).
Baker Street Elementary – Befogged in Mind

“they don't have days of fog in the Latin countries” [SUSS]

To us, one of the most iconic fogs in Baker Street lore is the opening of "The Bruce-Partington Plans," in which Watson very clearly sets the scene:

"In the third week of November, in the year 1895, a dense yellow fog settled down upon London. From the Monday to the Thursday I doubt whether it was ever possible from our windows in Baker Street to see the loom of the opposite houses."

And to remind us that this was not just a weather phenomenon, but an industrial-influenced condition, he described "the greasy, heavy brown swirl still drifting past us and condensing in oily drops upon the window-panes."

It sets the scene for what we're about to read: a story that isn't just a simple murder, but one that involves espionage and top-secret government plans. It's as if the industrial forces responsible for creating the Bruce-Partington submarine are foreshadowed by the industrial fog.

Meanwhile, the fog at Baker Street Elementary is concentrated more on young minds than on young eyes, and is quite revealing...

Perhaps you recall Watson mentioning in the midst of "The Bruce-Partington Plans" that Sherlock Holmes took his mind off of things while waiting for crucial information by losing himself "in a monograph which he had undertaken upon the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus."

Perhaps you've wondered who Lassus was. That would be Orlande de Lassus (or Orlando di Lasso), a Renaissance composer, who along with Palestrina, was one of the most influential musicians of the late 16th century.

But what did a "polyphonic motet" sound like? And what were these motets composed for? And why should Sherlock Holmes have an interest in them?

We have the answer to all of these questions and more from Ann Margaret Lewis, herself a Sherlockian and a soprano who performs liturgical music. Ann joins us to get us hooked on phonics, to explain the relevance of this beautiful music, and to identify a clip from the Jeremy Brett Granada series.
With the BSI Weekend coming up, we thought it might be helpful to provide a series of tips for the veteran attendees and the newbies alike.

The Baker Street Irregulars Weekend is happening January 14-19, 2020, and it's usually a pretty big deal if you're taking time out of your life to head into New York City for 3+ days of activities with people you haven't seen in a year (or years!) or those you may have only known online until now. Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.

This is the eighth annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.

While we know how many well-informed and helpful readers we have, we were once again impressed with the thoughtful suggestions that can make the BSI Weekend an enjoyable and stress-free one for you.

And if there are any additional tips that you think would be helpful to attendees, please feel free to add your own as a comment below. And if you'd like a sense as to what happens, listen to Episode 74:

Herewith the suggestions:

Bags 🧳

Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so.

Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward.

You might also consider bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room on Saturday to carry your various purchases. Not all merchants provide bags; carting away your haul is your responsibility.

Meeting Others 📇

Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc.

If you're in need of a good card, the Moo does a splendid job and VistaPrint has a fast turnaround time.

If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner.

Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends.

Comportment / Etiquette 🤝

Do tell people how good it is to see them again — or to meet them for the first time after having known them only online. Do tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. Do tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship.

If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances.

In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your timeline by asking their permission to share your photos of them online.

Attire 🥿 🧥

Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking.

This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa).

Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather.

Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on.

Money 💰

Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. We prefer withdrawing $2 bills from the bank and bringing them with us to make things extra efficient.

Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have.

If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.

Most of the vendors in the Merchants Room are very kind and understanding people, and many are also collectors or Sherlockians themselves. If you would care to haggle with them, they're likely open to it. It can't hurt to ask.

The BSI and Wessex Press tables will accept credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay.

Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and then double it. That might get you through. 💸

Time 🕰️

If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time.

Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home).

Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.

Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. See below for more details and a way to save money on rides.

Getting Around 🚕 🚇 🚶

Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn).

If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's Citymapper, Gogobot's York City Guide for Android and iOS has the New York Travel Guide and Offline Map by Ulmon.

Download and print the Summary of Weekend Events from bsiweekend.com (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone.

If you want to go to Otto Penzler's Mysterious Bookshop and are staying at The Roosevelt Hotel, the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a 4 or 5 express train two stops to Brooklyn Bridge Station; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes.

Download the MYmta app from the App Store or Google Play for navigating the subway.

Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride MetroCards. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.

If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. Note: a 65+ MetroCard cannot be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.

If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.

Download a ride-hailing app such as Lyft or Uber.

We highly recommend Via, which costs only $5 per ride anywhere in Manhattan and is one of the best values from the airport. Use the code scott5q3 to sign up and get a free ride.

If you'd like a code for Lyft, use SCOTT726787 to sign up and receive a $5 credit towards rides.

LaGuardia pro tip: Traffic to and from LaGuardia can be a bit of a gamble, and quite expensive. Consider taking a cab to the Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Ave. subway station in Queens, and then taking an E or F train to Grand Central Station.

Logistics 📝

Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system.

Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now?

The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable 6 years ago) – if this continues, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're Mattias Bostrom.

The Unscheduled 📅

If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer eat breakfast alone – saving energy for later conversations).

To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “You know my methods. Apply them.”

Dining 🍽️

What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.

Several Sherlockians like to go to the Oyster Bar for dinner after the Thursday night lecture.

There is Urban Space food court across the street from the Roosevelt, at Vanderbilt and East 45th Street, and of course Starbucks in the station and at nearly every corner.

For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, Serious Eats has a guide that breaks them down by category and of course Yelp has many suggestions as well.

And heaven forbid, don't forget about the Red Flame, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.

Online 📱

Whether you're in New York for the festivities or sequestered at home, it might be worthwhile to follow along online. Some ways to do that:

The official hashtag of the BSI Weekend on Twitter is #BSIWeekend. We have a feed set up on the BSI Weekend website, or you can simply follow along by clicking on the hashtag, or even on TweetDeck.

We also have a list of Sherlockians on Twitter whom you might consider following. A number of them will be at the weekend as well.
