Along with the aforementioned components of Sherlock
Holmes’s everyday carry (we covered <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/08/what-was-in-sherlock-holmess-everyday.html#.WkyBWd-nHb0">Part 1</a> and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/08/what-was-in-sherlock-holmess-everyday_25.html#.WkyBVt-nHb0">Part 2</a> here previously) are a pair of tools that seem, at first glance, conspicuously appropriate for the needs of the moment, rather like the shark
repellent on Batman’s utility belt.<o:p></o:p></div>

Holmes often employs a
large magnifying glass at crime scenes, and its presence seems plausible, since he could have foreseen the need for such an item, as in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> or "The Boscombe Valley Mystery."<br />
<br />
Yet in "The Resident Patient" Holmes has
a sudden and unanticipated need for a convex glass, and promptly whips out what Watson calls “his pocket-lens.” An even more Caped-Crusader-like example is the appearance in "The Musgrave Ritual" of a “pocket-compass,” just the thing for a
treasure hunt, though not an item one would expect to find in a Londoner’s
everyday carry.<br />
<br />
While it is true that Holmes is a confirmed
waistcoat-wearer, and that the waistcoast strengthens one’s EDC game
enormously (by a factor of two to four additional pockets), the
pocket lens and pocket compass might strain credulity, were it not
for the availability in Holmes’s day of gadgets like the one pictured below. Such
a tool would have made a nifty fob for a gentleman’s
watch-chain.<br />

Canonically inspired everyday carry, we turn our attention to today's knives,
multitools, and pocket notebooks. Without doubt, there are many worthy
candidates that would fit the bill – so many that I shall stick to only a few
currently available items that I have owned and used, and have found to be
excellent.<br />

U.S. and international currency, yet remains wonderfully thin and flat. Add a

The EDC cutting tool must be lightweight, flat, and properly
contoured, lest it soon be left at home. The options here presented offer varying levels of utility and demand varying levels of accommodation, but all
fall within the boundaries of “useful enough to be worth it” and “handy enough to
be sensible.” (This is the military “firepower vs. mobility”
equation: more firepower equals less mobility, and vice versa.)<o:p></o:p></div>

Hands down my favorite Swiss Army Knife, the Outrider is not
perfect, but it offers the best balance of capability versus bulk,
while ticking all the boxes for a Sherlockian pocketknife. In its tool set are a large locking blade, a saw, scissors, a
deep-reach Phillips screwdriver, a can opener/Phillips screwdriver, a bottle
opener/flathead screwdriver/wire stripper, a corkscrew, a drill/lacing tool, a
toothpick, tweezers, a mini-flathead screwdriver, and a lanyard ring. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s missing only a small
blade and one-hand opening capability for the large blade.<o:p></o:p></div>

with a noteworthy bonus, this pairing is worth considering. The
Spyderco Endura IV boasts a versatile blade, a powerful lock, Zytel scales, and a pocket clip (removed in this example). The “Spydey-hole”
enables one-hand deployment, and the knife is astonishingly flat and light.
When closed, its rounded contours make it a comfortable fit for any pocket, but
should you desire a smaller option, the Endura’s little brother, the Delica,

multi-tool</b> is football shaped when shut, but boasts many features of the
Victorinox Outrider (bottle and can opener, corkscrew, drill, saw, scissors, assorted
screwdrivers) along with two features of its own: a small sheep-foot blade and a
pair of pliers with an on-board wire cutter. (Multi-tools fall into two categories: plier-led and knife-led, hence the compromise of the CS4 lies in
accepting a blade that would be insufficient on its own, in return for gaining the bonus of an

Once you examine the size and weight, you may agree that there is no reason for not carrying this little
knife wherever it may be allowed. The components of the Compact are a medium blade, scissors, corkscrew, mini-screwdriver, toothpick, tweezer, and
the remarkable combo tool (available on very few Victorinox knives, it opens
cans and bottles, strips wire, and drives both flathead and Phillips screws).

Do these pliers hold a candle to the
pliers in the Leatherman Juice? No. Does the bottle opener work? Sort of. But
the file, which can double as a hacksaw, is surprisingly good, and the blade,
while small enough to be called a scalpel, is excellent, considering the

and Watson tussle with evil-doers of various shapes and kinds, in
defensive encounters for which the doctor’s army background and the detective’s
expertise at sword, single-stick, and slugfest have prepared them. (The stories
are called “Adventures,” after all.)<br />

The occupational realities of Holmes’s
work expose him to several murderous attacks, by knife, dart, air-gun, pistol,
stick, vehicle, falling stone, and so on, and he responds with an arsenal of
defensive tools – so many that it is difficult to single out one for his EDC. At various times, Holmes defends himself and others with empty hands, rocks, sticks, chloroform, and
one or more pocket-sized firearms. Thankfully, few of us will experience even
one felonious attack in our lifetimes, but the readiness is all, and the best
weapon to have in any fight is absence, as defined below.</div>

In pursuit of that quality, the old
Sherlockian virtue of <i>awareness</i> – observation and inference – is paramount. It
buys us time to react and escape, and it keeps us clear of danger.<o:p></o:p></div>

But we also do well to have a
defensive plan and skill set, and we are wise to include in our EDC some tool from a catch-all category encompassing all of Holmes’s choices: force multipliers. A force multiplier is anything that enables us to act more decisively and more quickly, and from farther away.<br />
<br />
The proper one for your EDC is likely to vary with your skills, confidence, and situation, just as it did for Watson and Holmes. There is no one-size-fits-all option, but there are contemporary correlations: Holmes often had occasion to employ his sticks, whether the full-length walking stick or the shorter hunting crop, and durable modern sticks are made by <a href="https://unbreakableumbrella.com/">Unbreakable Umbrella</a>. The great detective incapacitated Von Bork with a chemical agent in "His Last Bow"; <a href="https://www.sabrered.com/">Sabre Red</a> produces an effective line of parallel products for our time, complete with practice cartridges. </div>

When we ring in the New Year, we typically do so with fanfare and a look toward the future, in an effort to put our best foot forward.<br />
<br />
And in doing so, we also take a look backward to assess our shortcomings and areas where we think we might improve. It is human nature to anticipate, as well as to critique.<br />
<br />
We see a microcosm of this in the Sherlock Holmes stories: Sherlock Holmes was certainly one who offered his fair share of critiques — of Scotland Yard, of the establishment, of Watson, and even of himself ("kindly whisper 'Norbury' in my ear"). But we can also find instances of anticipation in the Canon — Holmes grinning with glee as he surprised Watson or the occasional police detective with his clever disguises, and even Holmes looking forward to a visit with his old friend Watson.<br />

Generations of Sherlockians are the beneficiaries of the poems penned by Helene Yuhasova. Yet this enigmatic individual has remained something of a legendary, even ethereal presence in the history of the Baker Street Irregulars.<br />

Who was Helene Yuhas(ova)? And were the poems, later ascribed to Edgar W. Smith of the Baker Street Irregulars, actually written by her? Whatever became of this this prolific poetess laureate, this Founding Mother?<br />
<br />
Sonia Fetherston, BSI ("The Solitary Cyclist") and Julie McKuras, BSI ("The Duchess of Devonshire") edited the 2017 <i>Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual, "A Woman of Mystery": Helene Yuhasova, Poetess Laureate of the Baker Street Irregulars</i> and they joined us to give us a sense of the mighty detective work that went in to tracking down the full story of a woman who left the Sherlockian movement some 70 years ago, leaving a long but thin shadow.<br />

<a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">The BSI (and Friends) Weekend</a> has been happening in one form or another since 1934. But one of the more recent additions to the already bulging lineup of food, friends and festivities is the annual <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/">Baker Street Babes</a> charity ball. We'd like to give you a little background about the event, let you know how you can purchase tickets, and bring you up to speed on the tickets we have to give away.<br />
<br />
Since its first inception six years ago, the ball has included the phrase "the daintiest," as an homage to Holmes referring to Irene Adler as "the daintiest thing under a bonnet on this planet" in "A Scandal in Bohemia." Each year, the theme of the ball is cleverly updated (including an invitation for attendees to attire themselves in a creative way, reflecting the theme). To date, we've seen the following iterations:<br />

The first is that you'll be surrounded by plenty of like-minded people, who enjoy Sherlock Holmes, food, drink, and goodies. The second is those goodies include items that will be up for auction (silent and otherwise). This year, auction items include a postcard in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's handwriting on his stationery from <b>Chris Redmond</b>, a William Gillette oil portrait from <b>Chuck Kovacic</b>, a handmade 221B replica from <b>Jacquelynn Morris</b>, and original art from <b>Bonnie MacBird</b>.<br />
<br />
But more importantly, the proceeds from the evening's festivities, as always, will be donated to the <a href="https://cst.dav.org/">Disabled American Veterans Trust</a>, to help former servicemen and women in need. To date, the Baker Street Babes charity balls have raised over <b>$31,000</b> for the Trust, and they're looking to continue in that fine tradition.<br />

Today traditionally marks the date on which "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" took place. The seventh in the series of stories that make up <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, "The Blue Carbucnle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.<br />
<br />
Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."</blockquote>
It has become a tradition at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere to acknowledge December 27th with a repeat feature. Just as the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "<a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-3My0j_zJAhUIPCYKHePhBrMQFgghMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2FSB10001424052970204464404577112431986005786&usg=AFQjCNFBOMTBdMiqlxf9tGYz0Jb-tieRKw&sig2=qjutMkGmsi34eHf1n39PhQ" target="_blank"><i>In Hoc Anno Domini</i></a>," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.<br />

The countdown to Christmas Day is on. And whether one is a Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, atheist or anything else, it's a day that is recognized across the globe.<br />
<br />
As adults, we perhaps groan under the weight that the holiday season puts on our shoulders: from shopping to planning meals to hosting relatives, it can be a series of responsibilities that add stress to at time of year that also has emotional land mines planted among the holidays.<br />
<br />
But think back to Christmas (or any major holiday that was important to your family) when you were a child. There was a sense of wonder, of delight, and of anticipation. For the good children that meant excited anticipation; or the naughty children, perhaps it was more nervous anticipation. Whichever side you fell on, you were certainly listless. And if you were naughty, perhaps you hoped that a certain all-seeing, all-documenting someone was "list-less" as well.<br />
<br />
And so it is over at Baker Street Elementary, where anticipation looms...<br />

The <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars (and Friends) Weekend</a> is happening January 10-14, 2018, and it's usually a pretty big deal if you're taking time out of your life to head into New York City for 3+ days of activities with people you haven't seen in a year (or years!) or those you may have only known online until now. Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.<br />

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br />
<br />
This is the sixth annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.<br />

Bags</h4>
<ul>
<li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li>
<li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li>
<li>You might also consider bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room on Saturday to carry your various purchases. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<h4>
Meeting Others</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li>
<li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li>
<li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner. </li>
<li>Allow yourself time to shmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<h4>
Comportment / Etiquette</h4>
<ul>
<li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li>
<li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li>
<li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your Facebook timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<h4>
Attire</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li>
<li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li>
<li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Money</h4>
<ul>
<li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. </li>
<li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li>
<li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li>
<li>The BSI table will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li>
<li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and double it. That might get you through. </li>
</ul>

<h4>
Time</h4>
<ul>
<li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li>
<li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li>
<li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.</li>
<li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Getting Around</h4>
<ul>
<li>Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li>
<li>If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's <a href="http://citymapper.com/" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gogobot.gogodroid.cityguide.newyorkcity" target="_blank">Gogobot's York City Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a> by Ulmon.</li>
<li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2017/11/summary-of-events.html#sthash.K6pyuPJg.dpbs">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li>
<li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Yale Club or the Roosevelt the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>City Hall Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li>
<li>Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride <b><a href="http://web.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm">MetroCards</a></b>. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.</li>
<ul>
<li>If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. <b>Note:</b> a 65+ MetroCard <b><i>cannot</i></b> be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.</li>
<li>If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.</li>
</ul>
<li>Download a ride-hailing app such as <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787" target="_blank">Lyft</a> or a similar service. We do not recommend Uber because of their questionable business ethics.</li>

<li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li>

Dining</h4>
What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.<br />
<ul>
<li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. </li>
<li>There is a Cosí across the street from the Roosevelt, at 38 East 45th Street, and of course Starbucks in the station and at nearly every corner. </li>
<li>For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, <a href="http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/07/where-to-eat-near-grand-central-station-nyc.html" target="_blank">Serious Eats has a guide</a> that breaks them down by category and of course <a href="http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants+near+grand+central&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY%2C+USA" target="_blank">Yelp has many suggestions</a> as well. </li>
<li>And heaven forbid, don't forget about the <a href="http://www.redflamenyc.com/">Red Flame</a>, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.</li>

Sherlock Holmes appreciated education. He admired the "[c]apsules with hundreds of bright little seeds in each" as he and Watson passed by the board-schools on the way out to Briarbrae in "The Naval Treaty." And he famously said, "Education never ends. It is a series of lessons with the greatest for the last," in "The Red Circle."<br />
<br />
So it is entirely appropriate the The Beacon Society, the Sherlockian group that recognizes and supports exemplary efforts of bringing Sherlock Holmes to children, would create a new branch especially for children. It is the Junior Sherlockian Society, and it is headed up by Shannon Carlisle, a previous winner of the Beacon Award.<br />

Through her efforts with her own classes of fourth graders, Shannon has ingeniously introduced them to Sherlock Holmes, and now it is codified so that children across the world can take part in Junior Sherlockian Training. She joined us to tell us all about the program was developed and how kids can get involved.<br />
<br />
Is your child, grandchild, or student even remotely interested in Sherlock Holmes? Or maybe they're struggling with reading or some other skill. Then the Junior Sherlockian Society is just what they need. The game's afoot!<br />

A letter from Arthur Conan Doyle to a little girl was recently sold at auction, and it gives us a glimpse into his mind at a critical time in the development of the Sherlock Holmes stories.<br />
<br />
The letter and its containing envelope were sold for $12,500. The envelope indicates it was addressed to Miss Ruby Paulson in Mount Sorrel, Loughborough — a small village in Leicestershire. Evidently, Ruby wrote to Conan Doyle expressing her love of the Sherlock Holmes stories and inquiring as to whether there would be more. And Conan Doyle replied in August of 1893 with a charming letter.<br />

Conan Doyle's letter to Ruby ran as follows:<br />

Sherlock has become very lazy and I am very stupid so that I am afraid there will not be very many more stories about the strange things that he has done. But both he and I are very pleased when we hear that we have given pleasure to nice little girls. I showed him your letter and he said that your signature showed him that your father was about 45 years of age, that your hair was brown, and that you were a clever little girl with a turn for everything except mathematics. That was what he said, but he smokes too much and has been getting quite muddled lately.<br />

That Conan Doyle would reply shows his character, both in giving a child the pleasure of a response from an increasingly famous author, and in that he himself was willing to 'play the game,' as he relayed Holmes's sentiments.<br />

But it also gives us a sense as to his feelings about the great detective at a critical time. August 1893 would have been right around the time that Conan Doyle was either writing about or contemplating the death of Sherlock Holmes. He and his wife traveled to Switzerland that summer, where he first developed the idea of killing Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls, as he had tired of the character and wished to focus his efforts on more serious writing.<br />
<br />
However, his reply to young Ruby indicates that he was far from done with Holmes. On the contrary, he demonstrated that the Holmes was alive and well in his mind through his own deductions (as elementary as they may have been). However, he seems to be preparing Ruby for what he know she'll inevitably discover that December, when the <i>Strand Magazine</i> would run "The Final Problem." Namely, that Watson takes up his pen to write "the last words in which I shall ever record the singular gifts by which my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes was distinguished." Calling Holmes "muddled" gave him a bit of an excuse to allow Holmes to wane gracefully. And also note Conan Doyle's subtle warning about the dangers of smoking in this letter to a child.<br />

The month of November gave us five opportunities to meet and discuss things. The Sunday funnies. Perhaps you recall the golden days of childhood when you'd awaken on Sunday mornings and you'd rush outside to pick up the multiple-pound Sunday paper and bring it inside to rifle through the sections until you got to the comics.
